Bitcoin Just Plunged 20% in a Matter of Hours

    https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2017-11-29/wild-bitcoin-ride-erases-2-200-in-five-hours-after-record-rally

Bitcoin plunged as much as 20 percent hours after a rally past $11,000 generated a surge in traffic at online exchanges that led to intermittent outages.

The plunge capped a wild day for the largest cryptocurrency that included a breakneck advance to a high of $11,434 before the reversal took it as low as $9,009. As of 3:36 p.m. in New York, it traded at $9,911.10, virtually unchanged from where it began the session.

The heaviest selling came amid reports of service outages and delays on some of the largest online exchanges. The extent of the problems on platforms such as Coinbase and Gemini remained unclear, with several saying massive spikes in traffic had caused unspecified problems. Coinbase remained unavailable to some users.

Bitcoin had rallied 20 percent in just four days, topping $10,000 for the first time earlier this week in a runup that drew increased warnings it was in a bubble. The cryptocurrency ended September at $4,171.25.

This might be a buying opportunity if you don't mind volatility. Definitely no guarantees though. I do not currently own any bitcoin or have plans to buy any.

Coinbase Loses Bid to Block U.S. Tax Probe of Bitcoin Gains

    Posted: 29 Nov 2017 04:25 PM PST

    https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2017-11-29/coinbase-loses-bid-to-block-irs-probe-of-bitcoin-gains

Last year, analysts said similar demands could be made of other digital-currency companies if the IRS widens its investigation.

"The government has sensed a windfall -- any company that has a plethora of wealthy users might be in the sights," Charles Hayter, chief executive officer of market tracker CryptoCompare, said in an email. "If there is tax to be paid the government is going to go after it if it makes an example" or a return on investment.

    Friendly Reminder: DIVERSIFY

    Posted: 29 Nov 2017 12:16 PM PST

I keep reading posts about portfolios being down 5% - 20% because of what looks like a sector rotation we're seeing out of technology.

If things end up really going south, you guys are going to be in a world of pain.

Use today as a friendly reminder to look outside of the tech and meme stocks you read about here, or wallstreetbets, stocks, stockmarket, etc.. Do some DD and explore out to other areas. There's value out there too!

    Happy investing!

The Centuries-Old Debt That's Still Paying Interest

Thought this was pretty cool. I've heard of bonds with super long maturities, like 100 years, but never knew of permanent bonds. How many perpetual bonds are actually still in circulation?

Daily advice thread. All questions about your personal situation should be asked here

    Posted: 30 Nov 2017 04:05 AM PST

If your question is "I have $10,000, what do I do?" or anything similar. There is no single answer to this question, but we will also need A LOT MORE information if we are to give some sort of answer

    • How old are you?
    • Are you employed/making income? How much?
    • What are your objectives with this money? (buy a house? Retirement savings?)
    • What is your risk tolerance? (Do you mind risking it at blackjack or do you need to know its 100% safe?)
    • What are you current holdings? (Do you already have exposure to specific funds and sectors?)
    • Any other assets? House paid off? Cars? Expensive girlfriend? (not really an asset)
    • What is your time horizon? Do you need this money next month? Next 20yrs?
    • Any big debts?
    • Any other relevant financial information will be useful to give you a proper answer.

Be aware that these answers are just opinions of Redditors and should be used as a starting point for your research. You should strongly consider seeing a registered financial rep before making any financial decisions!

How easy is it to account for margin interest on your taxes?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2017 02:04 AM PST

I have never used margin before, I am wondering how easy do brokerages make taxes for people who use margin?

Has anyone struggled to figure out who to write of the margin interest as an investment cost?

S&P 500 vs Nasdaq 100, and if pro Nasdaq 100, which ETF do you suggest and why?

    Posted: 29 Nov 2017 05:35 PM PST

I wanted to stabilize and diversify my portfolio last year so I bought some ETF's, one of them being Vanguards S&P 500. It's done alright, made something like 7% but nothing like some of the weed stocks that I've done tremendously well (or sometimes catastrophic) on. Looking to add a bit more risk, would it be wise to move half my S&P 500 position into a Nasdaq 100 ETF right now, while the tech heavy stocks (that the Nasdaq 100 is primarily made up of) are experiencing a dip? If so, does anyone recommend a good Nasdaq 100 ETF? I've seen Horizions and ishares but haven't look much past those two. Thanks in advance!

(I'm based in Canada btw, so that could play into CAD-hedged vs non CAD-hedged as far as which ETF might suit my needs best)

Could gold/precious metals be a solid investment in light of possible Bitcoin bubble burst?

    Posted: 29 Nov 2017 09:09 PM PST

Since some of the appeal of Bitcoin is that it is not a currency regulated by governments, I feel that precious metals/gold values could increase drastically if/when the Bitcoin bubble bursts. I think that people will feel burned by the fact that they just bought a crypto and want something physical to back up their money.

    Posted: 29 Nov 2017 05:43 AM PST

Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc. founder Steve Ells agreed to step down as chief executive officer after struggling to pull out of a two-year slump, a shake-up that sent shares of the burrito chain surging.

    CMG share price, Bloomberg

And part of the official press release from Chipotle:

Chipotle Mexican Grill (NYSE: CMG) today announced that Steve Ells, chairman and CEO – and the founder of the company in 1993 – will become executive chairman following the completion of a search to identify a new CEO. Investing weekly vs monthly vs quarterly - does it matter?

    Posted: 29 Nov 2017 09:54 PM PST

    Hi there,

I know that in general, time in market > timing market. Does this still apply if you're investing more frequently than the dividends are distributed? I was looking at the dividend distributions for VTSAX as an example and the dividends are distributed quarterly. In this case, would it matter at all whether you invested weekly or monthly or quarterly since before the quarter, you won't have any dividend reinvestments?

Or am I missing something about time in market other than dividend reinvestments?

    Thanks

Is there an index like VIX that looks at implied volatility of SPX over longer periods of time?

    Posted: 29 Nov 2017 07:53 PM PST

VIX provides a one month estimate of implied volatility but I am looking for something that predicts implied volatility over long horizons (10+ years).

Broker says I cannot take over my Aunt's college funds

    Posted: 29 Nov 2017 07:42 PM PST

My Aunt has college accounts for her grandkids. The broker of a major bank picked crappy expensive mutual funds, so I am taking over so I can trade online and buy VTI and stocks. Today the broker says I cannot take over the accounts because I am not a licensed broker. Is he telling the truth?

It seems so many review sites have few trustable reviews and most of the time it's blatantly clear their getting paid to promote a certain broker. Anyway, I want to see who you guys think is a good CFD trading broker (primarily scalp and swing trading so no long delays)

Any value difference between DRiPS and Index funds?

    Posted: 29 Nov 2017 06:43 PM PST

Investing noob here so apologies in advance if this is obvious.

I've been looking to get into dividend reinvestment plans largely inspired by the super low fees (after the initial account setup it only costs pennies to purchase shares or fractional shares).

Index funds, as it has been well noted, are awesome and comprehensive and have a lot of 'dividend aristocrat' stocks.

Outside having more control over your diversification, does anyone know if dividend reinvestment plans worth it (both cost and return wise) or is it better to just buy an index fund?

NASDAQ plans to let investors bet on Bitcoin’s rise and fall

    Posted: 29 Nov 2017 11:30 AM PST

Bitcoin is back in the news as its price continues a meteoric rise, with the cost of a single coin breaking $10,000 yesterday. Today, it was reported by several major publications that NASDAQ, the second largest stock exchange in the world, plans to launch futures contracts for Bitcoin next year. That would allow investors to bet on the rise and fall of the cryptocurrency, profiting if they are correct about the direction of its future price.

The stock is going up and they pay dividends quarterly. Thoughts in potential investing and reap the benefits? Though I don't understand how they could give dividends when they have had an awful year. Also with this whole net neutrality wouldn't they benefit?
