UPDATE: Call with a $60M competitor

    Posted: 23 Feb 2022 07:03 PM PST

I posted a question yesterday here as a sort competitor reached out to me after I published the science behind my tech. Just had the call and thought I'd give a bit of an update. Note that I'm a physical product with IP, etc. So I imagine software discussions could go way differently.

Anyways, this company is interested in my science and wants to test it in their ISO- certified facilities. All free and they'll share the data. They regularly do this as part of their product pipeline and if the performance meets their standards and the novelty etc match their business goals, they'd consider licensing. But the data comes first.

The sky didn't fall, there were no nefarious high jinx as some on this forum normally suspect, and we'll start a hopefully long professional relationship over antimicrobial coatings.

Happy to answer any questions and feel free to tell me I've messed up massively.

Considering the entrepreneurial path...What are your schedules like and how many hours do you work? What's your free time like?

    Posted: 23 Feb 2022 09:06 PM PST

    Hi there everybody.

Wishing everybody well and hoping everyone is doing alright.

So I have a question - I'm considering jumping into the entrepreneurial path and starting my own business and I'm just curious what's your schedule like?

Did working for yourself meet your expectations? As in, did it create the freedom and flexibility in life you desired?

If so - what is your business, how many hours do you work, and just generally tell what your schedule is like if you would....

It would be greatly appreciated - Thanks.

Where can I find or get made a combination dial - like suitcase locks but without locking mechanism?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2022 03:21 AM PST

Hope this is the right sub :

Am looking 'tag' small items that are put onto shelves by one person, so another person knows date (and a code number referencing product catalogue) they were put there - items will only be on shelves a couple days at most and change frequently for new items - I need 'tags' to be as small as possible, re-useable & hardy - items have narrow straps on them for attaching these 'tags' to them like below clips show.

My thought was to use combination lock type device, like what suitcases, briefcase locks use, but don't obviously need the locking mechanism & cannot find anything like this.

My mockup of what I would like based on the above:

    https://imgur.com/a/yINhe2

    Details on my mockup:

Front: Top combination is for product num catalogue (0-9 is within prod number rage). Would like the white slanted line '/' as a day and month date separator printed on 'tag'

Back: Black rectangle is the clip

Side: The black line is the clip - for sliding onto a strap on the boxed item mentioned above

Any ideas or alternatives hugely appreciated!

    Is Shark Discoveries a scam?

    Posted: 23 Feb 2022 09:03 PM PST

    Hi everyone,

My partners and I have a fairly successful health and beauty business. A few weeks ago, we got a message from Shark Discoveries with Kevin Harrington. After playing some phone tag with assistants, we were scheduled for a call with a senior brand manager who told us about an opportunity to work with their company, only if we passed an evaluation. The cost is $24,900 and we get air time. The pitch looks almost identical to this (https://www.reddit.com/r/Entrepreneur/comments/8uc1lv/as_seen_on_tv_made_me_this_offer/). The evaluation is us sending them a sample of their products - which we now passed. Now we're accepted into the program and I am trying to figure out if this is legitimate before we proceed.

Besides that other post, some concerns we had:

Now, before you tell me this is a scam, please note:

    • The contract we received was from Fortune Media Group. They seem like a legitimate company from the research I've done. On their site, they have plenty of mentions of Shark Discoveries and Kevin Harrington. This makes me feel like it's at least definitely not a complete scam - in other words, they're not just impersonating Kevin Harrington and then running off with our money.
    • The only response in the other Reddit thread I linked doesn't really concern me. It is clear that As Seen On Tv is definitely owned by Kevin Harrington. The fact that they have a .com and a .pro isn't really concerning. And while the same service was once offered by As Seen On Tv is a little suspect, I think it's easily justified with a "they're expanding the service" explanation.
    • Kevin Harrington was definitely a shark on shark tank and definitely owns HSN and As Seen On Tv. As part of our fee, we'll be getting a testimonial from him. I don't know if I need the testimonial, but my point is would someone worth $400M really be making a business out of ripping off small businesses like ours? The brand damage to him would really just not be worth it.
    • They claim their business model is basically to make money from us rebuying. I believe it - but one of my partners is skeptical. He thinks even if they're not a complete scam, they're just going to buy us $5,000 of media, build us a crappy $2,000 commercial, and pocket the rest of our $24,900. Shark Discoveries said that they basically lose money on their initial run. They make a spread on the air time they charge us, but that all goes towards the production of the commercial in the initial run. Apparently, 85% of people rebuy and that's where they make their money. I believe it.
    • The initial guy I spoke to was one of the ten most polished guys I've spoken to in the last year. Through family, friends, business, and luck, I somewhat regularly speak to people relatively high up at Fortune 500 companies, as well as a handful of entrepreneurs with $50M+ exits, so I guess I think I can judge when someone knows their stuff. This guy knew his stuff. Even my skeptical partners agree.
    • This is the people we were contacted by: khbrandresponse.tv. All the research I can do on these guys checks out as properly affiliated with the companies mentioned above.

I'm basically ready to move forward, but my partners are skeptical. We were given references by Shark Discoveries, but in an effort to do better due diligence, I'm hoping to hear from somebody who's had experience with them that isn't actually provided by the company. I'm really hoping someone here has something to share from their personal experience, or maybe some research that I missed. I'd be eternally grateful.

    Thank you all.

Experienced Media Buyer here - I'll help you with your TikTok Ads for free

    Posted: 24 Feb 2022 02:39 AM PST

    Hi everyone,

I've been working as a media buyer in Turkey's one of the top agencies since 2017. Managed around $40MM+ in total over the course of my career, working with huge brands & companies.

For those who know, Turkey is going through an economical crisis. I've both outgrown my senior position in the agency, and it's not exciting for me anymore - I like challenges & learning a lot. And I've got skills that are transferable to other markets (I'll be targeting US, CA & EU now), got pretty good English and am very good at what I do - so I'll be building my own int'l agency. However, I have no contacts with companies outside of my country and no references to show. I want to build great reviews for my agency by helping 2-3 people/brands/companies with their TikTok Ads specifically (I'll focus 100% on TikTok at the beginning, you can't believe how well they work to grow profitably and sustainably) - I've been on Reddit for years now. So I came here to offer you my services.

The deal is: I'll manage your TikTok Ads (both if you're currently running them, or will start with me) for a month, for free. I'll do improvements on your ads, test new creatives (mostly UGC - User Generated Content, it's key for TikTok), and make sure I leave your ads BETTER than when I've arrived (or we can continue working together - that's the best scenario!).

Who can apply: If you have an e-commerce brand (preferably DTC, not dropshipping - I like building with REAL brands) with some traction (already profitable with at least 3-6 months of sales history), have at least a $5-10k/month budget for running ads - we can work together. Would love to help you. Brands with no previous TikTok experience will be prioritized - I want to create a success story with you.

If you're interested, please send me a message here (with your URL & info) - or leave a comment so I'll contact you. Thanks!

let me get this straight regarding tiktok vs fb ads + ig ads...

    Posted: 23 Feb 2022 09:10 PM PST

if you are using tiktok, upon making your first post, tiktok's algorithm will send your post to heaven and will get you tons of exposure... all for free

subsequent posts will receive less exposure but you will keep posting to get that initial high

fb ads, and ig ads, do not have such a feature. upon your first post, you get nothing. you have to pay for your ads

in that case... what's the reason for using fb ads and ig ads for initial exposure when tiktok's algorithm will send new users' posts to the moon for free?

Should I launch on sites such as product hunt?

    Posted: 23 Feb 2022 07:33 PM PST

So just a few weeks ago I launched the MVP of my side project and have done some local marketing. I have been able to get a decent amount of users but would like to see more. Should I launch on product hunt? Are there any possible negatives from launching there? Like have people visit and seeing a crappy MVP?

    Entrepreneur guidance

    Posted: 23 Feb 2022 07:08 PM PST

First of all, God bless all of you and your journey as entrepreneurs.

Im looking for some guidance as I am experiencing a little bit of a crossroad in my path as an entrepreneur. I am currently a laundromat owner, but let me tell you how I got there and maybe you can help me as to where I am going...

I started off in college studying to become a teacher. I did this with goals to one day open up a learning center. I actually obtained a job at a learning center while i was getting my degree, in order to learn the ins of the business and see if I wanted to pursue it. Fast forward, I got my degree and began teaching. I was a teacher for about 3 years when I realized, this 9-5 lifestyle is not for me. I need to do something else as well as just teaching. It was at that moment, after that thought, that the opportunity to purchase an existing laundromat came to me. I took it.

For a while, i was doing both teaching and running the laundromat. I ran a full blown service at the laundromat from self service, to wash and fold, and dry cleaning. I had an employee opening every day at 7 and another one closing at 11. I would help open in the morning before school, and be on my cameras watching them close at 11 before i slept. My life consisted of a lot of work and i felt like i had no free time. At that moment, I decided to stop teaching and pursue my laundromat business full time.

I am proud to say that my one location is paying for my living. After stopping teaching i decided to do some extra work in the laundromat and added a pick up and delivery service. I ofcourse am the driver, but this extra business has showed great value to me and my business so i plan on keeping it.

The crossroads that i am currently facing is, what should i do now! I have maximized the capacity in my laundromat and things are finally running smoothly at that capacity. I am debating on opening up another laundromat (has been impossible to find) or looking for a different type of business, or going back to school as a teacher. I know this was a lot, but i would appreciate guidance, or questions if you have.

    Thank you

Is this typical for Angel Funds?

    Posted: 23 Feb 2022 07:00 PM PST

I have a startup that has a finished product and a decent pipeline of prospects but we are pre-revenue (it's an enterprise B2B product). I am looking for some investment to grow the sales team. I met with a fund that boasted about investing $1M last year, given their number of investments I'd estimated they probably put about $100k in each. They told me they don't usually fund projects unless they see a record of sales growth, but it honestly seemed very odd given how small their investments are. If I had the kind of sales they want me to have already I wouldn't need their funding or I would be looking for much higher level of it. I guess my question is, are these guys normal or did I just happen to find a very conservative group?
