Renewal document from USAA, and notification of "roof age" becoming a factor

    Posted: 04 Feb 2022 06:16 AM PST

Got the renewal doc from USAA for my vacation home. There was an increase, which was to be expected because of the claim for significant storm damage in September.

They sent a second document advising me that "roof age" is going to now begin to be factored in. They have it down as 2014. However (as discussed in another thread) the roof was just replaced in the last couple of weeks as part of the hail claim. So, I went on the USAA site, followed the "update home characteristics" dialogue, updated the roof age to 0 years... and when I calculated the premium, it actually increased it.

Is this normal? Wouldn't a brand new roof actually be considered less risk, less likelihood of damage from leaks, animals getting in thru holes in roof, etc? I exited without saving the change of course, but not sure what to do.

    Electrician Contractors Insurance (KS)

    Posted: 04 Feb 2022 06:33 AM PST

I'm looking into starting a small side business as an electrician while still working full time. I have a masters license and working on getting an LLC setup right now. Some people heard I'm starting this side business and have already started calling, so I'm curious if it's possibly to get general liability as a contractor for just myself until my LLC is formed? This job I was called on would make good profit, but is needed to be done soon is why I'm kind of jumping the gun to get insurance as soon as I can. I just want to make sure I am covered when doing the work.

Partial at fault Accident / Diminished Value

    Posted: 04 Feb 2022 08:22 AM PST

    Hi all,

So I was in a accident this Tuesday, short story is the other drive made a left turn while blind due to a semi truck. I might be moving soon, so getting my truck fixed fast is more of a priority than not paying a deductible and fighting with the other drivers insurance. So I filed a claim with my insurance. My insurance has determined that I was only 20% at fault, the other driver was 80% at fault, and they will go after their insurance. But they are starting repairs sooner than if the other insurance agency was going to "investigate"

My question is, since I'm going through my insurance, can I still file a claim for diminished value against the other driver? The truck had a clean title/carfax prior to this accident.

MetLife auto/home now farmers(?), how about dental & pet insurance? multi policy discounts?

    Posted: 04 Feb 2022 05:12 AM PST

So MetLife home & auto is now farmers but same name (& site log in?)

Dental & pet insurance is still with the real metlife? Do they still do multi-policy discounts? (between dental & home for example)

I'd like to have all the insurance in one spot and the multi policy discounts would be nice, but I'm not sure if that's (still?) a thing. And will metlife/farmers eventually just be farmers?

Edit to add: I get that existing multi policy discounts are currently being honored, but am not clear if adding dental or pet insurance through either MetLife or farmers now would result in a multi line discount

Got Into my first fender bender (not my fault) how do I convey it to insurance?

    Posted: 03 Feb 2022 08:48 PM PST

So here I am, driving back from a long day at work, at a full stop at a light in Manhattan, and I got rear ended by a Citi Bike truck (NYC) and it cracked my bumper. We exchanged info, but the police in NY don't take a police report if no airbags were deployed and/or the car doesn't have to be towed. Anyway, I know I'm 100% in the right, I have a clean driving record at the age of 24, and I just want to convey to Insurance that I am fully correct. Any tips?

Interviewing for an underwriter position without experience.

    Posted: 03 Feb 2022 04:55 PM PST

Hey all! I am currently in the interview process for an underwriting position. However, I have no work experience in the field, and I am actually surprised that I was even called for an interview because of this. I have spent the last six months applying to literally every underwriting position that I have come across. I am a highly analytical individual, I enjoy problem solving, and after doing extensive research on jobs that could facilitate this aspect of my mind I came across underwriting. What should I expect from this interview process? Is there actually a chance that I could be hired for this role with no insurance experience? I was even hesitant to to schedule a telephone interview as I assumed I simply would not be considered for the lack of experience. However, I was emailed a few hours later to take an assessment test.

Any advice? Do individuals ever get hired without any experience for this position? A little about me: I graduated with a triple major in psychology, religious studies, and philosophy. I have a high aptitude for critical thinking/reasoning/analytical and math aptitude (which can't necessarily be seen from my degrees). I am in my mid-30s looking for a career change that I could strive at.

Thanks for reading! And thanks in advanced for any helpful insight!

    Is this even normal

    Posted: 03 Feb 2022 11:47 PM PST

So June 2021 I had a water heater that busted. Caled home warrant they said call insurance start claim la la LA. So called them got a claim started . They send out rooter rooter who refers cut n dry. So cut n dry comes out and takes photos leave equipment and doesn't plug in. Days go on and cut n dry comes 7days later to start the demolation. It's June and it's been a week ..the water has evaporated dissolved and aintrunning hot anymore. They come out remove water heat put up some spider thing and turn fans on. It's so damn hot the water been gone. So they set up temp water heater. And 2 was pass and they never came out to check on there equipment I called them trynna get there estimates for repairs because adjuster at aaa was trynna keep the ball rolling. They prolonged it so we had the temporary water heater for 30days. Which was 32.99 a days charge. Got estimates . So they ripped out the water damage on walls and then we get the estimate it's 1200.

Rewind. When it first happened I. Got a hotel to Stay in because I have a baby she can't handle cold showers. Got the room with casino comp nights. Claims guy said its living expenses included. So when checked out gave casino checkout information and they didnt want to pay out.but sent a check for 650. So I'm thinking the first stay was for that check. Check into another hotel for 2 days. Then another for a day then back to casino for 2 separate days. This is all WITHING a month in a half of getting water damage water heater issue handled. She doesn't want to pay the hotel stays because she says they need to see those funds where exhausted. I sent the receipts for all the others I payed for but the complementary one didn't have daily rate it showed date stayed room service chage etc.

So aaa says your deductible is 1000. We got a check for 322. For repairs . 640 for living expenses The estimate was 1200 were suppose to pay that amount out of pocket to repair company.

Company who did the demolition that was dry by the time they actually came out charged 5000 for they're water heater temp and cutting out thee dryed drywall.

We luckily have a handy man who was able to fix the holes they cut out and purchase the water heater and payed someone to install. Which we paid out of pocket.

This entire situation just seems shady or am I tripping? Thanks I'm neelw to this insurance stuff

Car was totaled, insurance adjuster question?

    Posted: 03 Feb 2022 03:03 PM PST

2017 toyota corolla with 71k miles now total loss, pretty much brand new in condition (new tires, no damage until accident). Says market value is 17-20k for other used cars of same make, year, and similar mileage. The "adjusted" value of my car according to them is 14k before deductible ($800) even though 2 of 3 of their comparison prices is $20k. Was going to trade it in for $18k, but don't have that in writing as I never got to do that. Adjuster hung up the phone when we were asking questions. Why would the adjusted amount be $6k less than the market value when the car was in such good condition? Never even got a ticket before and I am not at fault for the accident if that matters any? Can someone even just explain this process? I don't understand what is going on.

Long Wait Time on Replacement Parts - How to go forward?

    Posted: 03 Feb 2022 08:46 PM PST

    Hi guys.

I recently got hit by a car whilst riding my Bicycle. Although I'm just an amateur bike rider, I have a decently high end bike and have had it covered under my home and contents insurance accordingly. The bike is insured for around $4500 Australian Dollars, including the accessories fitted on the bike.

A driver ran through a stop light and claimed he didn't see me, police were involved and he's been charged, taken blame, everything squared away there.

As per any claim, I had to get a quote from two different repairers. I've done this and both claims come out to very similar amounts. The bike is repairable but repairs are looking to be about $1000 Australian Dollars. The main chunk of the repair cost comes in with the replacement brake/shifter combo on the bike. These are $300 AUD each, plus labor, as well as a back wheel.

As with a lot of things, COVID has wrecked supply chains and manufacturing, the brand which makes these specific parts for my bike (Shimano) has been hit hard, with wait times on replacement parts absolutely skyrocketing.

I've been advised by both repairers that the earliest they can source parts is Early to Mid 2023. They are the only manufacturer of this specific part, and there is no like-for-like part that is a suitable replacement.

How are situations like this usually handled? I've never had to claim on my insurance before, but from what I understand insurers in Australia have to rectify a claim in a reasonable fashion. Am I out of luck untill these parts will arrive? Will they write off the entire bike and source me a new one?

I have been in contact with my insurer and at the moment they are just assessing the information I've provided them and waiting to get back to me.

Looking for any information you can provide. I appreciate it in Advance.

Applying to insurance utilization review jobs

    Posted: 03 Feb 2022 06:26 PM PST

Hi all! I am soon to be a MSW graduate, and I've been in school from undergrad to masters nonstop. I recently came across some utilization review jobs, that are remote. I would love to take some time to not wake up and do a client facing job. Are social work skills transferable to this job? And would you hire someone fresh out of grad school? Thank you for any advice!

Travel Insurance (1 Year Working Holiday)

    Posted: 03 Feb 2022 05:59 PM PST

Hello! I'm a 24 (F) and a Canadian Citizen. I just got approved for a 1 year working holiday visa in Australia! So excited to finally be travelling again after 2 years of covid misery! I'm hoping to leave in about a month, just trying to sort out some travel insurance. Does anyone have any suggestions for me? I need insurance that will cover:

-a Canadian citizen for 1 FULL year

    -Scuba diving

    -mountaineering/rock climbing

    -snowboarding/skiing including backcountry

    -emergency evacuation/airlift

    - Covid-19 related emergencies (but honestly am x2 vaxxed and I've already had an extremely mild case of covid, so i could take or leave it)

    Thanks fellow travellers!

Can my health insurance refuse to pay for a pending claim if I am fired from my job?

    Posted: 03 Feb 2022 04:46 PM PST

I live in nj, and I have BCBS through my job. I need a surgery that 1. needs pre-authorization, and 2. would give me a 1 1/2 month recovery time. Thing is I have only been working there for a few months, so I dont qualify to take an FMLA leave. I'd like to return after I have recovered but if they wouldn't be willing to allow the leave I'm still going to get the treatment I need regardless of if they fire me. Now, my surgery and short hospital stay would be covered obviously since I would still be employed at that time. So basically is would/ could my insurance refuse to cover the treatment after I'm terminated, even though the procedure took place while I was still employed/ covered.

Will I get my premium refund if it's being sent to a lost debit card?

    Posted: 03 Feb 2022 04:27 PM PST

I recently cancelled my auto policy, and I was told that I'd be receiving my refund through the card I used to purchase the policy. The thing is, I lost that debit card, and was issued a new one the same day. Nothing changed with my bank, just a totally new debit card. I asked if they could send it to my new debit card, but they told me they couldn't register a debit card that they haven't processed a payment through. I was assured that it wouldn't be a problem, that I would receive my refund since I still have the same bank account. I just wanted to know if that's actually true? They also mentioned that if there's a problem, they'd send a paper check, but I'd much rather just get the money into my checking account. Thank you.

    Filing 2 Claims

    Posted: 03 Feb 2022 04:19 PM PST

Would a second claim raise our rates or cause the insurance company to drop us? We initially assumed we had water damage from a storm. However, we discovered that the damage also came from a pipe leak. We will receive $17,000 to repair the roof and gutters. The cost to repair the indoor bathroom is close to $8000. Any advice would be appreciated.

    Just a question about consequences

    Posted: 03 Feb 2022 02:41 PM PST

    Hello!

I'm just posting to ask about what would happen in a hypothetical scenario.

If I were to take out a health and dental insurance policy, use my benefits to cover a bunch if stuff in tbe furst month, and then cancel after, would there be any big consequences?

I'm assuming yes. Like not being able to get their insurance again at a later point.

Edit: Should have clarified that I'm Canadian. Sorry!

We've got basic health coverage already, but I've had an extended health and dental coverage plan for about 5 years, on a month-to-month basis.

And I just wanted to know if there were any consequences if I were to cancel and only take out a month of coverage here and there whenever I wanted to get dental work done, etc.

Why does car insurance cost so much for a second car?

    Posted: 03 Feb 2022 02:40 PM PST

Sorry for the dumb question but I'm just wondering why people who own two cars get charged 100% for one car and around 75% for the other when they're the sole driver on both. Say the two cars have the same exact value, why is your car insurance so much more expensive than if you owned one car? It's not like you can drive both cars at the same time and crash them both at once.

Tire shop scratched my car, insurance agent stopped responding.

    Posted: 03 Feb 2022 02:21 PM PST

My local tire shop (chain) scratched my vehicle after loading or unloading the set of wheels to replace.

I didn't take photos of my car the day of dropping it off, but had photos from 2 weeks prior that show there were no scratches.

They had a third party contact me, I provided photos of before and after, and a local repair shop estimate. After a few exchanges she has essentially ghosted me. My last email from her was Jan 14th, and I contacted 2 times since then with no response.

In this case it's just my word vs theirs, since they didn't provide any footage from in the shop showing the before and after service.

At 32 and driving since I was 16 I've never dealt with an insurance claim, my record is clean. Is she ghosting me because I don't have a case? Even just a "I will be in touch" response would ease my anxiety. But the scratch occurred the first week of December and it's now February.

Is it normal for it to take this long for a scratch repair? The estimate I got was ludicrous for the amount of scratching and when I asked if I should get a second opinion they didn't advise me to do so.

    [CA] Compensation after being rear-ended

    Posted: 03 Feb 2022 01:46 PM PST

Back in August DaWife was rear-ended, and after little/no response fro the other parties insurance carrier, the claim went into arbitration, but I've only received my deductible, when there were additional out-of-pocket costs my insurance did not cover (to the tune of $150-$200).

I have the contact information for the other insurance's agent and the claim number, but they're not calling me back. What is my recourse here? Are rental fees covered in a collision? Do I need to go to small claims court? The other insurance company (e-surance) has taken so long, and done so little at this point, I'm at my wit's end.
