How ten days on a boat changed my relationship with money forever: Posted: 26 Feb 2022 03:38 AM PST I was inbetween jobs in 2018 and looking for a challenge to take me out of my comfortable-office-worker-bubble. Also being very money-driven at the time, I figured I would combine the two: a challenge that also pays well. My father had always told me about life at sea and how life is a lot like the ocean: you can't really plan anything, its TOUGH and you just need to ride the waves. So I went for it. Hoping I would return as a tougher version of myself. 3 hours after leaving the dock, the waves started kicking in. I soon realized that the constant gravity-pull was not for me and it made me seasick. I'd heard that the seasickness goes away after a day or two, so I pulled it together and started working. Heres how working on a fishing boat is like: You work for 6 hours and then sleep for 6 hours. Constantly. So theres 12 hours of extremely hard physical labour every day. Thats why fishermen work 4 weeks on and 4 weeks off. Three days go by and I am still seasick. Meaning I'm throwing up whatever food I'm able to force down. It felt like coming down with the worst flu ever, yet still needing to work the hardest I've ever done. On top of that, I couldnt sleep. The engine was right by my bedroom and kept me awake. So my 6 hours off usually meant 1-2 hours of actual sleep. Lets do some math here: No food and no energy + 12 hours of work per 24 hours + 2-4 hours of sleep per 24 hours. = not so great. I started breaking down on day 6. After we were forced to work 26 hours straight, because of a malfunction with the fishing line. I didnt feel emotions at this point. I was dead on the inside, but my body kept working. I was basically a zombie fisherman. But here I was, going on day 7, still showing up every day and doing the job I promised to do. I felt kinda bad ass at the same time. But that feeling soon went away. The alarm went off! I rushed to the cafeteria to see whats going on. When I get there I see a crew member having a seizure. The seizures didnt stop and we alerted the authorities. They told us to return to shore and they will have an ambulance waiting. But shore was 12 hours away. And the seizures never stopped. I cant remember exactly how long it went on for, but around 6-8 hours of seizures later, they finally decided to send a helicopter to come get him. The Sea King helicopter was there in no time and they repelled down and pulled him up again. And helicoptered him to the nearest hospital. We were all beyond relieved. This was turning into a really traumatic experience. I still couldnt eat or sleep. I was hoping they would cut the trip short, just so that the crew could digest the events. But no - we went straight back to sea. After three more days of hell on earth, I finally got a message: the tubs are filled with fish and we're heading back to shore. I was reliefed beyond words. Not to be overly dramatic, but I felt like how wrongfully convicted inmates must feel like when they get released after 21 years in prison! Sailing peacefully back to shore, I had a realization: you could offer me millions to do another trip and I would refuse it. That realization made me deeply understand how pointless money is if you're unhappy. This realization has driven me to prioritize any other thing than money: happiness, kind of work, people, health, location etc. Not long after this, u/naval changed my entire outlook on life, again. And my life has never been the same since. Btw:

Posted: 25 Feb 2022 06:49 AM PST For the past 10 years I've worked as a consultant helping small business owners with SBA loans. When their business is closed, I help negotiate settlements. Some years are better than others, but over time I got discouraged by the number of people who would call for free consultations but then I'd never hear from them again. And I always felt like they were milking me for free information that they would not otherwise find. Just recently, I just started to start charging a case evaluation fee. And under a week I've had four people sign up to pay $250 for me to evaluate their case. I'm using an online calendar so people can choose their date and time and pay for the session without me ever having to talk to them. For the past three or four years I've sat around twiddling my thumbs waiting for somebody to hire me, when it turns out that the service people were really looking for was something that was less expensive than my full on consulting services. They just wanted a little direction. I feel like such an idiot for not identifying this earlier. I've also created an online course for a fraction of the cost of my online consulting which I plan to offer as an upsell during these paid consultations. The lesson I learned several years too late: stop banging your head against the wall trying to sell people the product you want them to buy, and instead create the product that they're asking for. For me, it was right in front of my face the whole time but I was not paying close enough attention. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Feb 2022 11:15 AM PST So I have an idea and it's a specific type of water bottle cover. I could sell this to literally any water bottle selling companies / Amazon / whatever. I've never invented anything or started a company or a website I actually just got out of high school and only have had a regular job. Is this the place to ask these questions? If so how would I design this would I give me idea to a certain invention start up company / manufacturer. Then would I present the model to these companies that sell water bottles, get a parent first? [link] [comments] |
Which website service would you choose for you business - SquareSpace? Wix? Shopify? Others? Posted: 26 Feb 2022 10:24 AM PST Hi. I'm looking to understand the market of website building companies such as the ones mentioned in the title, with the intent of possibly investing in one of those companies. As I don't have a business myself, nor any other need for such a service, I though I'd reach out to the entrepreneur community to hear your thoughts on the matter: Of companies such as the ones mentioned, which one would you choose for your business? Why that one an not the others? Any thought on what makes one greater than another, and for which use case and customer base? Does any of the companies have something to it that makes it stand out, causing it to have a competitive advantage for the years to come? Any input on this will be greatly appreciated! Where to begin with a small (UK based) jewellery business? Posted: 26 Feb 2022 08:34 AM PST Hi everyone. Please bare with me, I'm sure you've seen this sort of post a million times, but I just have no clue where to start with a small biz - all help appreciated! I started making wire wrapped jewellery over the pandemic for friends and family, and now want to try officially monetise my hobby. But I am business illiterate. From my googling so far it seems I'm better off establishing as a sole trader rather than ltd. after I've made my first £1000, so that's one thing off the list. However, the precious stones I use are just from various traders who in turn buy from wholesalers. Sorry if this is a stupid question but how do I go about becoming my own trader in order to buy from wholesalers myself? Where do I source affordable packaging and shipping supplies? eBay looks cheap enough but I wondered if there are specific places traders buy from. What would be the best platform to start off on? I see Etsy is popular but it's saturated with wire wrapped jewellery. I intend to try sell locally first via fb marketplace/Instagram. Then maybe expand to Etsy? I'm bound to make a lot of mistakes as I go into this, but want to make the best start I can. Believe it or not I've done a ton of googling, it's just all very overwhelming. Thanks in advance! Question for serial entrepreneurs Posted: 26 Feb 2022 08:41 AM PST Hello everyone. I was recently introduced to someone that identified as a serial entrepreneur. They run multiple businesses in different industries both brick-and-mortar and online. So my question for this community is how does a serial entrepreneur decide what businesses to run? Is it just running a business to make any type of business succeed? Or is there some passion associated with the industry that you go into? Is there just a need you saw that needed to be filled? I imagine running one business is hard enough but to run multiple could be very taxing. I was quite curious about this so any input anyone can provide would be great. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Feb 2022 12:18 PM PST My product measures 48" x 18" x 22" & 33lbs. It's priced Between $280 - $360 ( I haven't made any sales, so I don't know the right price point) so shipping is sort of cost prohibitive. What would be my best avenue for regional sales as far as online order processing in all aspects? Any guidance would be extremely appreciated since I'm a brand new business. [link] [comments] |

Advice on starting a unique outpatient Addiction Medicine startup? Posted: 26 Feb 2022 10:57 AM PST I'm an Addiction Medicine doc and for the past couple years I've really wanted to start my own Addiction Medicine practice. I'm in recovery from AUD and would love to use my own experience in getting well to make a unique pathway for other folks to get well. I envision the following: - Cashed based monthly membership that includes: - 90 minute initials, then 45 min follow ups every 2 weeks - Mandatory 90 minute group therapy once a week - Option if in-person or online - 3 to 4 month in lengths More specifics: - Unique individual and group curriculum focused on CBT, trauma, and addiction - People would be expected to graduate from the course within 3-4 months and would be referred to outside providers once a maintenance medication regimen is found. I would not be providing long term care for folks. - Program is geared for those who have completed detox level of care and are attempting to seek the root causes for the addiction - Program would look for underlying conditions such as untreated ADHD, MDD, GAD, bipolar, BPD, drug related psychosis, sleep disorders, non-psychiatric issues (such as PMDD, hypothyroidism, hypogonadism, B12 or Vit D deficiency, OSA etc), assess and treat as needed. It will just be me for now until it gets big enough to hire a practice manager and therapist to help. I currently have an office space, an EHR, private malpractice insurance, an LLC, a Square acct, intake and consent forms. I still need a website, marketing, financial infrastructure and I'm sure a whole host of things I have yet to learn. Any advice from people on starting your own niche practice? I'll take any and all advice from finances to marketing to infrastructure to pitfalls to avoid to that sounds dumb don't do it! None of my fellow doctors have any entrepreneurial knowledge so really looking especially for where you find knowledge and mentorship! [link] [comments] |
Seeking business part now for ambitious tech platform. Posted: 26 Feb 2022 10:12 AM PST I have a very powerful concept and I just want help. I can't do this by myself. My best friend is helping me by developing pages for the website on codepen but I need another person. You don't have to do this 40 hours a week. I just need a person to bounce ideas off and do basic tasks like if I assign you to research xyz and fill out a google doc on your findings you can do that. I can only give future equity. Can't pay. No ones paying me anyway right. So if I find this idea good enough to invest time for future pay so should you. If you are looking to join a project please contact me and I will answer any specific questions. Here's the kicker the problem my solution is solving exists in the fact that I have to use Reddit to make this posts. All the people that are going to comment and say well who are you (since hardwoodjunkie isn't a real person with credentials) and what's your project (since this post doesn't allow me to link my business plan and even if it did I wouldn't it public unless you requested permission *wink wink) just know that with my solution you wouldn't need to...understand yet? Let's talk this is a unicorn. [link] [comments] |
Starting a small home services business. Start as LLC or Sole Prop to start? Posted: 26 Feb 2022 10:11 AM PST Hey folks! I'm considering taking the leap and starting my own humble home services business. (Gutter clean outs, window cleaning, pressure washing, minor landscaping, yard clean ups) I've ran a small humble biz like this when I was younger and simply I'd absolutely no idea what I was doing in a business sense. It was a means to an end to make money. I have a lot more experience this time around and more money in the bank to start things right. My short term plan ~2 years, is to be the owner/operator. Build out a customer base and systems that can sustain me. Mid term 3-5 years, bring on an assistant and maybe in that same time, promote that assistant and give them their own truck to run. (We'll see, I want to start small first, so I make sure I'm doing things right this time around) Given this information, would you recommend I start out Sole prop and then transition to an LLC once I actually have more liabilities? Or would it be best to start as an LLC right away? Pros and cons? Thanks in advance :) [link] [comments] |
Email Copywriter looking for a challenge to build his portfolio! Posted: 26 Feb 2022 06:11 AM PST Got a health/biz-opp list? I'm looking to write a few emails free of charge to build my DR portfolio. All I want in exchange from you is data on how these performed I've got experience writing for eCom/SaaS but I'd like to get more of the touch of the direct response world :) One of the emails you'll get will "revive" 5-10% of your dead subscribers (people who haven't engaged for a long time) The others will bring in some sweet sales for your business. I'm doing this only for 3 people. DM me via chat here on Reddit! P.S. If you're not in the health/biz-opp space but you still got a sales letter DM me [link] [comments] |
what is something you can buy to rent out besides a house or car? Posted: 26 Feb 2022 09:21 AM PST hello, what are some assets to buy to rent out ? besides houses or cars of course, like medial devices to rent out to hospitals ? [link] [comments] |
I need advice about a service I have created Posted: 26 Feb 2022 08:29 AM PST A little background: I am a 20-year-old guy living in Europe (Western Balkans). I program as a hobby. A year ago, I had the idea of creating an online platform where people could go and find someone to hire based on their needs (example: https://www.local-helper.co.uk/, https://www.homeadvisor.com/). I have listed a bunch of services there, from house cleaning to looking after children. The whole traffic I get is from SEO when people search "house cleaning in CITY", for example. This goes for all the other services I have listed. The way I thought of this at the beginning was to put a form on the landing page of the specific service and then get requests from people that want their house cleaned (I'll keep this as an example since it is the most successful service). This worked okay and I got several hundred requests in about 6 months. Then I started to think more and also did a redesign of the whole platform. Instead of just putting a form on the page, I started to put up people that were looking to clean houses and also set their cost (per hr) alongside a button that led to a form where you could make a reservation for those people. The idea was to get the clients' info and then send it over to the person looking for work, while also building a points system so that people with the most hires and positive ratings would show first, as well as only showing their name so that clients wouldn't just google them and contact them themselves. Even though this seemed like a good approach, I think that the number of requests has decreased a bit. Although I would get requests to hire my "staff", I never sent them anything. This was more of a test to see how this new approach would perform. Also, I took the permission of the people that were there and notified them that I would be testing for a bit. Now, this is where I am stuck. I cannot find a way to make this profitable for me. I am sure that this platform has a lot of potential, I am just not finding the right way to make it work. My questions for you are:
I also added a new section where people can look to hire someone. My best service here is to hire someone to look after children. This is long time rather than a one-time thing like the cleaning service. How would I go about profiting here too? One way I have thought about is to collect money from people that want to find work and then find them work in a month or else return the money. One other way I have thought is to charge the person who hires them, although I am not sure if that would be good practice. Thank you all for your attention and sorry for the very long post. I am just lost right now and need some advice to make this work. I appreciate all your help! [link] [comments] |
After years of obsessively competing with others, I refocused on simply differentiating myself Posted: 26 Feb 2022 08:02 AM PST When striving for success, we typically tend to compete with others in hopes of coming out on top. This happens in business as well as in our personal lives. Recently, I wanted to try and change things up for myself. This is when I found The Blue Ocean Strategy. Simply put, The Blue Ocean Strategy is about value innovation, or finding a way to differentiate yourself in order to create new value. By doing this, you can create a new untapped area that will attract demand and make the competition irrelevant. The lack of competition will help you stand out and increase your odds of resonating with others. I've talked in depth about how innovative companies like Tesla and Netflix have used The Blue Ocean Strategy to get to where they are here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EngJMA6BsR0 Let me know if it helps shift the way you approach whatever you're working on. Trying to come up with a name for my children’s private lessons business focused on creativity… Posted: 26 Feb 2022 08:01 AM PST I am starting a small side business, hoping to grow it into something bigger eventually. For now I'm wondering if it's beneficial to come up with a name and make socials and a website under that name, or focus on building clientele (I only have two clients for now) I am teaching music, photography, chess and art lessons with the focus being self expression and creativity rather than approaching things from a purely technical place. Trying to decide between something short and sweet or something a bit longer that says more about what I do. So far I have a couple which I'm not super excited about: Animo Kids, Animo Creative (Animo is a Spanish word which means to put your soul into something or to do something with soul) and I know that's probably not the best as most won't know what it means and will maybe have trouble remembering spelling etc.. Posted: 25 Feb 2022 11:44 PM PST Hello fellow entrepreneurs! A few friends and I recently came up with an idea that we would like to work on, and since I know ideas are worthless without execution, I feel very comfortable sharing it with everyone, in hope that I would get some feedback on it! So essentially we would like to create a used car marketplace that would allow private sellers to list their pre-inspected vehicles that they would like to sell on our platform. For each listing, a full, detailed inspection report will be visible for the general public to assess, down to pictures of every scratch. Inspection will be done by our network of verified mechanic shops like pepboys or what not. We will then charge the seller a flat listing fee, and a part of that will go to inspection. I have told this idea to a few friends and family members, most liked the idea but there is still a few people who didn't really like it. Hence, I would like to ask, what do you guys think of this idea? I would love to hear some thoughts since I'm kinda having some self doubts rn, thank you! [link] [comments] |
Ideas on events to sell LED toys and glow sticks? Posted: 26 Feb 2022 05:42 AM PST Some years back, i worked one summer selling led toys like swords, pacifiers, etc. And glow sticks at random 4th of July festivals and outdoor events. I would pull $300-500 a night and make 40% commission on it. Now that I've moved to a bigger city and it's 8 years later, I want to get a peddlers license and do this myself. The licenses and all fees are about $600 themselves, and the return on these toys is pretty big when buying wholesale. For example, the swords can be bought for roughly $1 each, and I used to sell them for $8. diffraction glasses are about $1 each and we're sold for $5. A $10 pack of 100 glow sticks could be sold for $1 a piece. And so on. I could spend $400-500 on merch and make all of my money back in a few nights work before 4th of July rolls around. Basically I'm looking for more ideas. I'm allowed to be anywhere that's public space. So I'm thinking outside of concert venues before they start, random kid-friendly festivals that go into the night, random events with lots of drunk people, 4th of July being huge. Anyone have any other ideas? [link] [comments] |
How to add social proof for the MVP ? Posted: 26 Feb 2022 05:38 AM PST I'm currently building a website to showcase what my MVP is/would be. Edit : It's a mobile app [link] [comments] |
Any U.S. based lawyers in here? Help me with my idea... Posted: 26 Feb 2022 05:33 AM PST I own the domain Civilian Review Board (.com) I wanted to create a website where citizens could report police abuse ( and any other abuses ). But most cities have their own type of municipal civilian review boards, and most of those lack the authority to do anything anyway. Thought I'd pivot away from police abuse and still have a place where users could report other abuses, and I'd like to give those leads to lawyers. So my question is, what type of cases would lawyers be interested in (if any), and would they be willing to pay for this lead gen service? Or do you have any other suggestions? elder abuse? Traffic court? Human Resource issues? VA benefits? Other? Thanks in advance [link] [comments] |

Async work is the future. And I want to help accelerate it. Posted: 26 Feb 2022 04:58 AM PST Covid-19 has made our long dream a reality by making remote work possible. Now the next frontier of remote work is async work. As we have completed almost 2 years as remote workers, we have realized that it is incomplete without an async culture. Async is the freedom to work anytime without waiting for our anyone to complete their tasks. There is no need to immediately respond to others. Rather than requesting or expecting employees to be online, available, and responsive during set hours, companies that work asynchronously allow their employees to complete work and answer colleagues when it's convenient for them and within a reasonable timeframe. I believe this to be the future of work. So, I built a job board specifically to find asynchronous jobs: Please share a word with your friends. And I am open to hear your feedbacks. Thank you.
