An economics expert said there could be a nationwide drop in spending once federal student loan deferment ends. Special thanks to r/msu and r/WMU for their input.

Article from Insider including survey re: student loan forgiveness

    Posted: 06 Feb 2022 04:23 PM PST

Hey all. I don't think I've seen this shared here yet - this article was published by Insider a few days ago and includes a short survey to share your thoughts on student loan forgiveness. Could be a great way to garnish some additional attention on the topic, if you have a few moments. They don't mention reduction of interest rates or prolonging covid forbearance, but I will be adding a note about these in my personal response.

Tell us what you would do if $10,000 of your federal student loans was forgiven

    Need advice with Navient

    Posted: 06 Feb 2022 08:29 PM PST

    Hey all,

    Please be gentle here.

I am first generation college student from a blue collar family with consistent money issues. When I went to college I took out private loans with Navient and just believed people when they told me I'd have a good job some day and have no problem paying them back.

One B.S. and M.S. later in environmental science, and I am 34 with 3 private student loans from Navient. I have faithfully made my payments for years now, but I am only able to scrape by on the minimums. They're taking 20% of each meager paycheque, unwilling to work with me to drop payments down, and I still have some private loans with AES I'm dealing with. One of which I defaulted on because I just do not have the income and working a second job is not an option due to family and health issues.

Recently I was digging through creditkarma, and I realized that all the loans I've taken out through Navient.... that I have been paying hundreds of dollars each month to for years, 50-75% higher than my initial take out amount.

I cannot consolidate because I have no co-signer (not that I'd put that on anyone to begin with). And even when I had a credit score of 720, my income:debt ratio was too skewed that no one would have me. Now my credit score is 615, so it'd be impossible anyway.

I'm at my wit's end and feeling very broken hearted. I want to pay back my loan and I understand they're a company and need to make money, but it's been years of payments, and I've not even been able to pay down what I initially borrowed.... let alone it's that much higher!

I just don't know what to do, and I'm at a total loss here. I live on pennies just to pay off these loans from when I was young and dumb and believed what people told me. It's been over 15 years since I first took out these loans.

TL/DR: I want to pay back my loans but I also want to be able to stop surviving and scraping by and I'm not even putting a dent on anything.

Student loans for expats that have never been to the UK

    Posted: 07 Feb 2022 03:59 AM PST

Guys, anyone here from Pakistan or other Asian countries that have availed loans to study in the UK? I have never been to the UK and am looking for lending agencies anywhere in the world that will be willing to fund my education in the UK. Does anyone know where I should look? Problem is that my home country does not give student loans - at all. So I have to look for options in the UK, but haven't found anyone who's done that before. Please, any advice is appreciated.

Is childcare included in the discretionary income calculation?

    Posted: 06 Feb 2022 04:49 PM PST

We have two babies in daycare, both in my wife's name, she has both kids in her health insurance. She has only $400 left in her account after daycare expenses. It's $2600 before daycare costs. She's enrolled in PAYE. is it 10% of of $2600 or $400. Because we can't really afford paying $260...

    Need some help!

    Posted: 06 Feb 2022 01:10 PM PST

Hello everyone, i have been working for a hospital as a physical therapist for 3 years as of January--alot longer than i thought so i never did the psl because the first year after graduation i didnt have to pay anything under income driven payment and them covid forbearance. So today i did the PSLF help tool to pre fill my form and plan on getting it sign/filled out at work tomorrow to send to fedloan (currently with great lakes)

My question is i should get credit for payments due to the last almost 2 years of income based 0$ payments due to covid correct? My employer has been "eligible" and the same for 3 years. I know my next step is to send paperwork in and get loans over to fedloan but i am just curious if this will retro back as my employer hasnt changed and i have been under income based payments with great lakes. As always thanks guys and gals!

    Servicer change to Aidvantage questions.

    Posted: 06 Feb 2022 03:22 PM PST

Got an email from Fedloan stating, "get ready for your loan servicer to chnge" on January 21.

It said FedLoan would send an email with a notice of the change, and to read this fully and then I would recieve communication from Aidvantage to open an acct with them. I have not recieved any more communications since Jan 21st from either Fedloan (have not gotten the 'notice' email yet) or Aidvantage. And I can no longer sign into MyFedLoan app. An error comes up saying the application is for primary borrowers only.

Is this the normal timeframe? How long did it take for the changeover to happen for anyone else. Just trying to stay on top of it so my account is ready to go when payments resume. Thanks!

Processing Time for Payment Plan Change

    Posted: 06 Feb 2022 06:17 PM PST

TLDR: Does anybody know what the current processing time is for a change in payment plan?

In December I submitted a request to change my payment plan from REPAYE to PAYE. When I submitted the request, I was anticipating that payments were going to restart in February and thought that 6 weeks would be plenty of time to switch me over to the new plan. The payment pause was extended shortly after I submitted my request. I hadn't heard anything since the request received acknowledgment email so checked on my account several times over the past week. There is a section with a status bar which has this line underneath: "We will review your request and send a follow up email by MM/DD/2022." The problem is, every day the date to expect a follow up moves back by a day so it is continually 1 month away. I want to make sure this application is accepted before I file my 2021 taxes since the request relies on my 2020 taxes. So, does anybody know how long payment plan changes are taking currently? Thank you!

    Recertification & Taxes question

    Posted: 06 Feb 2022 06:06 PM PST

It's my understanding that even though Aidvantage is telling me I need to recertify in May 2022, I don't actually have to do so until they reinstate payments. Correct?

However, my 2021 income was substantially higher than my 2020 income (to the tune of $25k), so...should I recertify before filing my 2021 taxes? Then it would draw the estimated monthly payment amounts from my 2020 income, rather than my 2021 income, and I would have lower payments for the next year (assuming they are going to turn payments back on in May).

Am I missing something here? TIA.

    Loan open

    Posted: 06 Feb 2022 11:55 AM PST

So, I recently received a discharge for my student loan. I applied back in June 2020, noticed in September and received my letter in February that I was cleared. Did anyone have to reach out to credit bureaus to have the loan amount remove from there credit report?

Parent Plus Loan Interest Rate Strategies?

    Posted: 06 Feb 2022 10:41 AM PST

Any one successfully lower the interest rate on a PPL without refinancing via private loan? Is there a way to lower the interest through consolidation (keeping it federal though)? The federal interest rate for PPL is over 6% while private loans can provide lower costs but you give up all the perks of it being federal (especially with all this activity around restructuring federal student loans). I don't want to refinance and then legislation passes a few months later that reduces PPL interest rate to what the student rate is - or keeps at 0% for longer. Thanks in advance for any feedback.

What is the chance of forgiveness

    Posted: 06 Feb 2022 11:35 AM PST

I'm genuinely wondering what you all think the chance of loan forgiveness is ? Do you think it's going to happen, and if so in what amount? I personally think there will be some sort of forgiveness although it may just be the $10,000 amount but I think the deferral was to buy time to come up with something. On that note, do you think there will be another deferral?
