Toxic Air after massive fires -- relocation expenses?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2022 07:24 AM PST

EDIT: sorry, it should say 'temporary living expenses'

We live in Louisville, CO where nearly 1000 homes and businesses burned to the ground (including a nearby Tesla dealership with lots of li-on batteries). We are so grateful our home was spared, and haven't been back to the house yet, but I am starting to hear that the air quality is dismally toxic due to all of the burned cars, asbestos, etc, and that we are supposed to wear N95 masks at all times while indoors, and to have our houses professionally remediated. Apparently the air quality is likely to get worse as cleanup begins (probably not for another couple of weeks since every home will need to have an adjuster, etc).

I am starting to feel that it may be unsafe for my small child, kitten and I to be staying in this toxic air. Does insurance ever take *outside* air into account when considering temporary living expenses? Is there a way I can try to get them to pay for a month or two of an outside rental/hotel?

We were within 1/4 mile of the fire, about six blocks.

    Thanks.

    Need advice... so frustrated

    Posted: 03 Jan 2022 07:14 AM PST

New here. Feeling really emotional about this. Just need some advice.

About five years ago we has some major damage to my parents house in Florida. A tree landed on the far right side of the house. It shook the rest of the house and there was wind damage to the rest as well.

We had our insurance company assess damages and they decided it was covered. We asked the insurance assessor who to use (apparently he was independent) and he recommended a local contractor.

ALL the work that contractor did was bad or borderline fraudulant. We caught him substituting cheaper goods on multiple occassions and in several instances the inspector stopped the work because the insulation didnt meet code.

One leak was never properly repaired... something was done incorrectly .... and it has not been fixed.

and now five years later and about six new contractors have tried to fix it. It is still leaking and there is mold and damage in the house. Im sick of health problems.

Our insurance co recommended these people and the house cannot be sold. Its turned into money pit because of the original work done.

My dad is 70. I had health problems to begin with. What do we do?

edited: to remove name of co

Had a road rage incident with another driver.

    Posted: 03 Jan 2022 10:48 AM PST

She was driving really slow so, I honked her and she break checked me and I went around to do the same ( very foolish of me, but I been having a bad day). I pulled over and let her go past, and she stopped in of me. I got out of car at green light, and yelled at her to move. I noticed she was on phone with police, I don't why. But I noticed after leaving the scene she had extensive damage to her car. I know I didn't hit her car. Plus, I have no damage on my car. Should I be worried that she'll lie and say I did that damage to her car ?

    Travel Insurance

    Posted: 03 Jan 2022 10:17 AM PST

So I'll be going to the Maldives soon and purchased a trip delay policy with a $7000 max in case we catch covid and can't go home and have to quarantine. Problem is rooms are $1000 a night at our resort and we might have to quarantine for 14 days, so I'm only covered for half the costs.

Is it possible to purchase another $7000 policy to make sure I'm fully covered?

    Surprise Medical Bill

    Posted: 02 Jan 2022 08:31 PM PST

Hi all, I'm sure many people have had the same situation as I do, but haven't had much luck finding further information.

In Illinois, USA. I went in for my annual check up, got some blood tests done, doc did some other tests as well. A few weeks go by and my docs office comes back saying one of the tests wasn't covered, a Vitamin D blood test for $300. Insurance says its only covered if I have a specific health condition.

I'm obviously shocked because 1) I never authorized this test 2) Had I even known it was not covered, I wouldn't have done it. I feel like I've been blindsided by this. The doc office runs my insurance always and says coverage is all good only to come back with a surprise bill. Like am I supposed to call my insurance when I'm in the docs office and ask if every single test he requests is covered? What are my options here, I don't feel comfortable paying this bill in good faith.

Why does my insurance need the age of the items that were stolen?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2022 09:42 AM PST

Hi all, I recently filed a renters insurance claim. I had a laptop, gaming console, etc. stolen. They're asking me for the "age" of the items in question.

I'm wondering what do they use this information to determine?

    Help with my insurance claim.

    Posted: 03 Jan 2022 09:39 AM PST

Hello. I was in a car accident where the other driver was at fault. Today I received a call from the other drivers insurer about the damages in my car. They agreed it was a total loss. They want me to send them my loan information so they can pay it off.

Is this my settlement? I still have doctor appointments that are related to the accident. I've missed some work as well.

Should I send them the info. How do I know what will be settled for? Will it be over the phone or what?

    Thanks

    Good student discounts

    Posted: 03 Jan 2022 09:24 AM PST

Currently I am on my parents insurance plan, and it's time for me to send in a transcript to my mom for the good grade discount. I'm in college and I had a pretty rough last semester so I do not want my mom to have my grades, so I would send her fake ones to stop questioning. However, my gpa is definitely still good enough to qualify for the discount. Just not good enough for her. Is there a way for me to send in the actual grades without her knowing to avoid fraud, or would it even matter if the fake grades got sent in if my gpa is still good enough anyway? If I sent them in myself, would she have any way of knowing/seeing the grades?

    Contractor fault on leasehold property.

    Posted: 03 Jan 2022 05:22 AM PST

Hi, I have a leasehold property in the UK. The buildings freeholder is responsible for insuring the building. The building is currently under a big insurance repair due to a fire. With the freeholders permission I hired a contractor to carry out some works which were not covered on the insurance repairs. The contractors fault/mistake has unfortunately flooded the the two units below my apartment. Although he has public liability insurance he is refusing to file a claim or provide his insurance details. I do have his insurers details who have confirmed he is insured with them. My concern is that without the contractors compliance in filing a claim and if buildings insurance refuse to accept liability. Will I be left with the bill for the repairs?

    Cupboards

    Posted: 03 Jan 2022 09:06 AM PST

I had a massive leak and my upper cabinets were ruined from dirty washer water upstairs. They've agreed to replace all upper cabinets (not just the doors.) but they will only approve refinishing the rest.. my cupboards are custom oak. I don't want to paint or stain them. Thoughts? Is this just how it is?

Do you think my car will be totaled?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2022 08:55 AM PST

I have a 2015 mazda cx-5 that was hit yesterday (around 100k miles, fully loaded touring edition AWD, in Virginia). The driver door doesn't open and 2 side airbags deployed (driver door and rear driver side door). The driver door took most of the impact and doesn't seem like any other panels were damaged, but who knows. Thanks for your opinion!

Auto insurance coverage for recent repairs/upgrades?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2022 08:18 AM PST

    Good evening,

I was in an accident last month, not at fault. I'm thinking my vehicle is going to be totaled because the damage was pretty severe to the front end. I've been looking at replacement vehicles of same year/mileage and the prices are insane right now for stock models.

I replaced my engine about a month prior to this accident and it cost me 5k out of pocket. I also had (undamaged)parts that I wasn't allowed to remove prior to the insurance taking possession(retrax bed cover, performance exhaust, etc.) I put quite a bit of money into various upgrades(frontier grille guard, cold air intake, etc.) for my vehicle as I take care of my stuff, unfortunately I didn't plan for someone to run a red light.

I'm afraid the at fault party's adjuster is going to lowball me and I'm going to end up in a shitty situation as a result. How can I make sure I get the most out of this scenario. I still owe 12k on my loan and I don't want to end up with a substantially higher lease after all is said and done. I plan on getting the same upgrades for the replacement vehicle. If I don't like the first offer can I request to remove some of my parts?

    Professional development for agents

    Posted: 03 Jan 2022 07:06 AM PST

Hey guys, I'm a relatively new agent (mostly home/auto) and for the new year, my boss asked me to name a professional development goal I'd like to accomplish in 2022. My company will support me whether that means paying for additional licenses, training programs, whatever. We're an independent brokerage that operates nearly all over the country if that matters.

Is there anything anyone could recommend? I feel like I'm too new at this to know what I'm missing.

    Liability Insurance

    Posted: 03 Jan 2022 07:04 AM PST

TL;DR: Water training; What level of legal protection do I need?

I'm a prior diver with the Navy. In my area, we have several young men and women trying out for the SEAL/SWCC/EOD/DIVER/AIRR programs. The mentor program that has been in place for the last 15+ years is being dismantled by the Navy. I've begun training some of these folks so they can show up with a halfway decent shot of succeeding in the pipeline. I've been doing this for no charge but will have to pass on any expenses for liability insurance to the candidates (if it's required).

Focusing on water comfort is the most vital for most candidates of the EOD/ND/AIRR programs. This involves treading with weight, underwater swims, buddy-tows, etc.. However, I'm apprehensive to push them too hard without some measure of legal protection in place. I don't plan to do anything stupid, but also want to mitigate any legal liability I may have on the off-chance that there is an issue.

I live in California. Do I need liability insurance? If I need insurance, do I have to be an established business entity (LLC, SP, etc.)? Where's the best place to start? I want to help these folks, but not at risk to myself and my family. I don't want to have to start a business to volunteer within it either. I'm sure these are dumb questions, but I'm far from being anything that represents business or legally savvy. Any direction would be much appreciated.

    Surgery bill

    Posted: 02 Jan 2022 09:19 PM PST

My son had a surprise appendectomy in May and one of the physicians wants $11,000+ for scrubbing in. They were out of network on my insurance. My insurance doesn't want to pay them that amount. I never met them before the surgery and had no idea anyone scrubbing in was out of network. Should I be suing the hospital for allowing this physician to scrub into the surgery? The surgeon only received a little of $2,000 for the surgery. So what could this physician have done that was worth 5x more than what the surgeon did?

We were in the ER until 3 am before my son got a room in the hospital and then at 8 am I had to come back to authorize the surgery. I met the surgeon before the surgery but I certainly didn't meet this other guy. My insurance company just says sorry we aren't paying. So how am I supposed to be on the hook when I never even had a chance to ask if this person was in network?

(In case it matters, legal jurisdiction would the state of New Jersey. Should I cross-post to /r/law?)

Got smaller crack in windshield due to road chip.

    Posted: 03 Jan 2022 03:08 AM PST

I have got smaller crack in windshield due to road chip. I have Geico insurance with 500 deductible for comprehensive coverage. Do I need police report to claim coverage? My car is luxury. Can I ask for complete replacement since small crack is on driver's side. I am afraid the repair won't be completely curing and won't make it invisible. It may cause problems in night driving.

Update: I have called Geico and they have schedule service repair for it since it is small than a dollar bill. Hopefully it makes somewhat invincible.

Scraped a curb should I just leave insurance out of it?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2022 06:44 AM PST

Hard to believe these days cars are so expensive to fix even for most trival cosmetic damage. Apparently the sensors in the bumper needs to be realigned. I also hear that using insurance would damage one's record and cause future policies to be more expensive. That is especially if parts and labor exceeds $1000 or just parts I don't know as the insurance company would require a report to the state's DMV. I be curious whether I should just do a DIY or hold off on repairing it until its time to sell the car.

Edit: Took it to an insurance referred bodyshop and the estimate is $700 parts but as high as $1800 once labor is included as its not only the job of replacing the bumper but the sensitive realigning of sensors installed in the bumper.

    Claim

    Posted: 03 Jan 2022 06:10 AM PST

Hello…i am with geico and had an accident recently where the police deemed me at fault. After reporting my claim, where I said many times everything happened too fast and I couldn't be sure of a specific detail, the person kept basically making a broad interpretation of what I said and the way he worded back to me sounded as if he was certain that things happened a certain way. I know their job is too look for a reason not to pay the other driver, but I dont want to look like a liar. Can someone please and tell me it isn't that big of a deal??? Like if it comes out that things didnt actually happen how I remembered them will they drop me from the policy for "lying." Again, I wasn't actually lying and I stated multiple times that I wasn't sure - but the rep I was talking to kind of ran with what I said and ignored me saying that I couldnt be sure and seemed to take what I said as a concrete statement.

    Mental Breakdown

    Posted: 02 Jan 2022 05:19 AM PST

How is someone who is living paycheck to paycheck supposed to afford their medical bills when their insurance won't pay ANYTHING until a $6000 deductible is met!!?! That is 25% of my annual income! I see specialists including mental health SO I CAN WORK!!! If I can't afford these doctors and treatment I won't be able to keep my job and be able to work. WHY IS THIS SO MESSED UP!! I am literally having a mental breakdown because I won't be able to afford my psych appointment on the 6th, or another appointment I just had to cancel that was Monday ($2600 for the year for this therapy).

I had Medicaid but now I make just a bit too much and didn't qualify for a subsidy through the marketplace because I have employer-sponsored/offered insurance and it's EXACTLY at the acceptable cost percent to income ratio (such garbage). I honestly should not have even signed up for the insurance.

I have no idea what to do honestly now. Work is already hard as is. It's only going to get worse because I can't get the care I need.

How should I insure a ridiculously small home?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2022 07:38 PM PST

We have an old, small home (400 square feet), with an assessed value of probably around $175k. I have no idea what it's actually valued at - finding comps is rather hard due to its size. Several neighboring homes were also this size when built, but have since been expanded to 2x to 3x the size.

I would imagine it could not be rebuilt for the price it would sell for.

An "average" sized home in my neighborhood would probably go for about $250k to $300k. While finding a home of similar size for sale at the same time in our area would be very difficult.

So how would it be best to insure this in a way that if our home burns to the ground, we could either rebuild or buy a replacement home? Is it even possible?

What kind of insurance do I need for starting my small business?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2022 06:50 PM PST

I'm working to start a very small business 3d printing toys and selling them. We recently read that we should have insurance to cover us for liability from any damage from the toys. What kind of insurance do we need? Bearing in mind please that we are just starting out - we don't want to be "over insured" so to speak.

    Dental Insurance Question

    Posted: 02 Jan 2022 06:25 PM PST

    (united states)

I went to the dentist and I need to have 2 cavities/fillings redone. They mentioned due to the out of pocket cost, I may need to look at upgrading my dental insurance. I think currently my dental insurance covers like 50% of the cost of a filling.

The way they described it, is it as simple as picking up a dental insurance with full coverage and then going to get fillings the following week?

I had to get a filling a few years back and just paid for it out of pocket(50% cost)
