Morning Update for Friday, 12/31/21 Posted: 31 Dec 2021 06:23 AM PST Good morning everyone, happy Friday :) Last trading day of 2021, so make it a good one! These posts are for informational purposes only. I am not a financial advisor. Main Watchlist: Gapping UP:
Gapping DOWN:
Momentum Watchlist:
Market Outlook: Stocks are looking to open a bit lower this morning after we saw the major indices pull back a bit from ATH levels. The S&P 500 recorded a new ATH in every month this year, making 2021 one of the best years ever for the index. We are still seeing low-volume trading to end the year, and it will be interesting to see what the new year brings. With COVID cases continually on the rise, we could be in for some choppiness to start 2022. Worth monitoring the inflation situation into the new year as well. S&P Futures are down ~10 basis points, Dow Futures are down 20 basis points, and Nasdaq Futures are trading flat. Gold and silver are trading slightly higher. Crude oil is pulling back a bit. Potential support level right around the $75 mark. Chinese stocks saw some strength in yesterday's trading. Most of them are pulling back a bit in premarket, but they'll look to build on the strength today. Worth monitoring some of these stocks into next week. EV stocks saw some strength yesterday, Chinese EV in particular. XPEV and NIO are worth keeping an eye on. Semiconductor stocks have pulled back the past few days after the recent strength. I'll be watching for more upwards movement if we see strength in the overall market. Airlines and cruise stocks are set to open flat after a somewhat choppy session yesterday. The crypto market is seeing a bit of a rebound this morning, but still hovering close to support levels. Bitcoin is currently trading around 48,000. We held up over support levels in yesterday's trading, which is a bullish indicator. I'll be watching around 46,000 as potential support if we see more weakness. Crypto-related stocks are up in premarket trading, as a result. Remember to use proper risk management; size appropriately for your account and have a plan for every trade you enter. Happy trading everyone :) [link] [comments]

Simple question related to taxes Posted: 31 Dec 2021 07:19 AM PST I'm not looking for a seasoned tax advisor and understand that probably everyone responding to this will not be one. With that said, I still have a pretty straightforward question. What is the LAST DAY that I can sell a stock and have it be included in my gains when I pay taxes in the following April? Does it simply work as follows: January 1st - December 31st? So if I purchased a stock let's say anytime before December 31st and the sell it in the same calendar year, then those sales are eligible for taxes come the following calendar year April when we pay taxes for the previous year? (Granted I have a total gain and my losses do not offset them obviously) So anything bought in 2021 and sold in 2021 will have to be accounted for and taxes paid for come April 2022? If I buy a stock in let's say January 2022 and sell it for profit in February 2022, will those taxes be owed come April 2022 or April 2023? I believe the answer is April 2023 but want to confirm? TLDR; Are taxes of gains determined based on a 12 month calendar year Jan-Dec? [link] [comments]

Posted: 30 Dec 2021 07:40 PM PST I have been investing for over a decade now - mostly just buying long stock positions (individual stocks and index funds) and some basic options investing (ie covered calls). I have considered expanding to margin investing. I have done my research and it seems that it is widely considered a bad idea due (I saw warren buffet even warned of it) to the concern of large short term losses which would lead to a margin call, and the results could wipe out a good chuck of a portfolio. But I feel if risk is taken wisely the chances of this is almost zero. My plan:
I know some people might say that if I'm only going to have 10 percent of my portfolio, then what's the point?, it's too little to make a different. But I disagree, if I am able to invest 10 percent of my portfolio on margin and magnify my long term average gains from say 10 to 11 percent - I think that is very substantial. An extra percent or two over the long term (say 30 years) can mean a huge difference - could be millions of dollars. I am very much a long term investor. Any comments on my strategy would be greatly appreciated. [link] [comments] |
