Ordered a video game from a store, they shipped it still in the plastic anti theft case. Claiming I stole it now.

    Posted: 05 Jan 2022 02:10 PM PST

I ordered a video game for my son's switch for christmas from Walmart's website. It came late, and it came in their plastic anti-theft box.

I took it up to the store and the teenager they had working there either didn't know or didn't care about the fact that I had a printed receipt from their website. He accused me of stealing the game and called over one of those plain clothed people they had. He did not show the receipt to their loss prevention guy and said he "Lost it" when LP came to investigate.

LP asked for my name, number, and address so they could look up my order. I gave it to them and they asked if I could come wait in their office. I used to work as a manager at Target so I got scared. If walmart is anything like target, going in that office ends with police issuing you a citation for shoplifting. Or arresting you.

So I left. I went home and did was I should have done in the first place. I hammered the hinges on the anti theft case and got his game out of there. About an hour later police came to the house. I never answered the door and they left about 30-40 minutes later.

They have come back twice since then. Both times no one has been home as the kid went back to school and I have been at work. The ring doorbell has them at my door though.

Can I just ignore this or should I go talk to the police to get this straightened out?

[USA] Recently settled a custody dispute and finally have my first overnight. Ex and her husband insist on entering my residence and I insist that they not. What can I do?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2022 07:01 PM PST

As the title says, I recently settled a custody dispute regarding my 7 y/o child. The order states that my child will spend the night at my residence this upcoming Saturday. It does not state anything about his mother being able to enter my residence at any time, nor does it allow for verbal communication without express written consent.

To be clear, I completely understand a mother's desire to see where her child will be staying, especially when our child has not spent a night with me in over 4 years. However, the only reason she's allowing it now is because after two rounds of mediation, an ADR hearing, and upon completion of the discovery process, it became abundantly clear that I was going to get more or less everything I was asking for in my proposed parenting plan.

She attempted to negotiate an ability to enter my residence into the settlement, but due to her behavior throughout the process, my attorney specifically advised me to not allow her to enter my residence. She has a documented history of misrepresenting facts and presenting false allegations.

Now with my first overnight coming up, she and her husband are texting me, each separately and in a combined group thread, stating that I'm crazy for not letting them in and that it's their right, blah blah blah. I have made them aware that I do not consent to them entering my residence and I know that I'm under no obligation to grant them this request. I'm also aware that if they decide that my child can't spend the night with me that my ex is in contempt.

When they made it clear that they would attempt to enter my residence, I insisted on picking him up from their residence, but they are firm on transporting him here.

What is the absolute best thing that I can do in this situation? Can I hire an off-duty cop to supervise the transition? Should I ask a friend who my ex is familiar with if he can be present to witness the transition?

If I'm being completely unreasonable I'll take those opinions too, but I'm not letting these people into my house.

Is it legal for an employer to contact new company when you try to put in 2 week notice?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2022 05:12 AM PST

I'm in Utah and I'm unhappy with my company. I was looking for a new job and I contacted a company that is in direct competition. We talked and came to an agreement on pay and they gave me a proposal. I contacted my employer and explained I was seriously considering taking the new job and needed to have a meeting. I felt like it was only right to give them a heads up. I was gonna put my 2 weeks notice in said meeting. Well they contacted the other company and threatened to try to "steal" their employees in retaliation. The other company took back their offer and not I'm stuck with my company for the time being. Is it even legal for them to do that?

Edit: it's a very specific field so it was easy for them to figure out where I was going and also an emergency service so just leaving wouldn't be very ethical on my part

Edit 2: it seems like the consensus is it probably wasn't illegal or grounds for any legal action. I've set up a meeting with the CFO, HR, and the manager that caused all of this. Idk if anything will come of it but I don't think the higher ups know he pulled this bullshit. He should at least be called onto the carpet even if nothing comes from it. I appreciate all the advice and it looks like I'm just basically stuck until something else comes along.

Neighbor’s cats in my fenced yard with high-prey drive dog

    Posted: 05 Jan 2022 03:33 AM PST

Pennsylvania. My neighbors have indoor/outdoor cats that always wind up in my enclosed yard, and asking them to keep their cats indoors has been unsuccessful. This isn't an issue for me in terms of poop/existing there/etc, but I have a large (non-aggressive, loves dogs and people) dog that I exclusively let run around in my yard who will 100% see their cats as prey and eat them if they enter the yard.

For the time being I am putting a muzzle and shock collar on him every time I let him out, in case he were to get ahold of one. However, I miss being able to play fetch with him outdoors, and I know all of that on his head has to be uncomfortable. The other neighbors have now started to think that he is aggressive as a result of the muzzle as well, and are getting upset about his presence in the neighborhood.

What can I do here? Am I liable under dangerous dog laws in PA if he were to injure/kill a cat in my own yard? Some sources say absolutely not, others say I would even on my own property because it is unprovoked/ I knew beforehand he does not get along with cats.

Utilizing pepper spray for off-leash dogs coming after my leashed dog in public parks (Ohio)

    Posted: 05 Jan 2022 06:28 AM PST

Hello and apologies in advance for mobile formatting.

I will be formally adopting a dog I have been fostering for a while. He is a large ~85lb boy but as friendly as can be. We enjoy hiking together regularly but have had a few scares. I think some dogs get intimidated by his size. We hike in areas that have leash laws, but not everyone follows them.

Recently, we came across a couple on our hike who had an off leash medium sized bully-breed mix. This dog came charging at us snarling and I put myself between the dog and mine to stop it from making contact with my dog (I know you're not supposed to get between them but it was instinct in that moment). My big baby was terrified and trying to get away while I was yelling at the dog and for the owners, who could care less about their dog trying to attack mine. The dog bit my shoe (no damage) and I narrowly dodged a few bites as I pinned it down to stop it from attacking. Eventually the owners caught up and grabbed their dog's collar and dragged the snarling creature away while saying I was overreacting and cussing me out.

Since then, I have ordered a gel pepper spray per a family member's advice. My question is, could I get in legal trouble should a similar situation arise and I utilize the pepper spray on the aggressive dog? Is there any action I could take to avoid legal repercussions if the aggressive dog's owner were to take me to court?

I by no means want to pepper spray a dog but this is the 4th time we've narrowly escaped a full on attack by an off leash dog on our hikes and it seems like it's only a matter of time before myself or my dog get bitten. It would only be used as a last resort.

    Thanks in advance!

I'm being suspended and probably charged for a meme page.

    Posted: 05 Jan 2022 08:19 AM PST

A few months ago, I decided to make a surreal meme page for my high school. None of the content was necessarily bad; I photoshopped the dean of our school into a bison that was lost in our town, made fun of our choir department by comparing them to a cult, etc. The content was satirical, poorly made, and was just intended to get a few laughs. It had about 400 followers and was a school sensation. People loved it, and I honestly didn't think that I was breaking any rules with it. I never threatened a member of the administration or posted anything that could be deemed a hate crime.

After my account was made, a few others spawned from it. About a dozen accounts were made with either memes or pictures of students. The school became aware of the situation and decided to find the "source" of these accounts. Which was me.

Yesterday, the dean came into my history class right before lunch. He sat me in the office and yelled at me for about half an hour about how I'm "disgraceful" and how they need to set an example out of me. A police officer, school psychologist, and principal were all called in. They tried contacting my mom but she was at work and unable to pick up. Eventually, I was placed in in school suspension for the remainder of the day and am suspended from school for the next week. Additionally, police contact is underway and it looks like the dean will try to press charges against me.

None of the content was malicious or awful- the majority of it was hdr memes of the school's gross chairs and it was clearly satirical. The account also quickly became private as soon as it gained traction.

For background, I'm a minor (16 as of right now) and a relatively good student. I'm in numerous AP courses, well liked amongst students and teachers, and am the captain of some clubs. I'm an immigrant and I know that my family will not be able to afford a lengthy court process. I don't think that I broke any of the school's rules, and I was never contacted prior to this incident to be told to delete the account.

Any advice is appreciated and very needed. Thank you so much.

Just learned that my father died of cancer a month ago. His alleged wife/significant other has been maintaining things as if he was alive. There's a very large trust that could possibly include my brothers and myself. Where do I even start?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2022 02:06 PM PST

Long story short, my parents divorced years ago and over time my father became very distant to myself and brothers. I took it especially hard as I had previously been the closest to him. At the time of the divorce he had a new secretary for successful business who turned out to be his "girlfriend." This woman actively drove a stake between my father and his family over the years following the divorce which has ultimately lead to minimal contact. This woman, his girlfriend/wife/whatever she was to him, had taken the role of office manager and recklessly destroyed his business through attacking customers verbally, shady business practice, verbal abuse of workers, etc. and the reviews on every website regarding his company all describe this woman's actions. Two years ago my father's mother passed away with a large sum of money - upwards of $800,000. Most likely that money was split between him and his brother. As of late October, one of my father's friends reached out to my mother asking if she had heard anything regarding his condition. The obvious answer was no but the rumor was that he was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer. Another month later another one of his friend's reached out to my mom asking if anybody had heard anything from him and that the friend was worried about him as he hadn't heard from him and they were good friends. I had not heard from my father in months despite many text messages. Typically, my brothers and I would receive a phone call or the very least a text message on holidays - Thanksgiving and Christmas there wasn't either. Today, my mom got a call from one of my dad's long time friends and he told my mom that he was also worried about my dad and had come across the fact that my father had passed away on December 8th 2021 and had been cremated. The friend stated that my father's significant other was an "evil" woman and that he had texted my father on the recent holiday's and received a response. This woman ostracized my father from everyone and seemingly has been keeping up a front that he is still alive. The reason being is unknown but I have a strong inclination that she is attempting to seize assets without anybody knowing what had been done. I know that there is trust in place through public record searches but I don't know any details of it.

My question is what can I do, should I do, about this and what legal action can be taken to attempt to stop this woman from essentially stealing from our family if that's what's truly going on here? It's not about the money for me, it's about the fact that my father is now gone and I never got the chance to say goodbye and I can't even visit a gravesite to have any sort of closure.

Can My Parent Force Me Into Rehab if I Don't Need to Go?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2022 06:15 AM PST

My mother is...special... she's 46 and living with me and my fiance. She pays no rent, (we are 25 and 22) but is on the lease as an occupant.

A serious of unfortunate events occurred and she ended up with nowhere to go so we got a place and agreed to let her stay with us for now.

However it's been terrible. My mother is a former severe alcoholic and is in liver failure right now. She has a plethora of other health problems that make daily life quite difficult for her as well.

But the problem is that she is, even though she's sober, different aspects of her liver failure are altering her mood and she has become nothing short of absolutely insufferable. She walks around mumbling to herself all day and night about how much she hates me, she tells people I'm cruel to her, I don't care that she's dying. She torments my fiance by being loud and yelling outside of our door all night and day and he never gets any rest.

She lies. Constantly. To everyone and about everything. Thankfully, most of the family knows she does this and it hasn't really affected me negatively.

I'm not an alcoholic. I don't drink daily and I don't get drunk. But she says she has "lined up" a way to get me into rehab. That I have to go. She is gonna have me "put away". She assures me constantly that she can have the court order me to go and stay in rehab. But I'm not an alcoholic. She says she will lie to them if she has to.

I'm sure she's just being....well, herself... but is there any chance she can force them to lock me away into rehab for months on end even though I'm in no legal trouble and am not even a textbook alcoholic?

I'd just ask her to leave but unfortunately she's on the lease as an occupant so I can't even do that.

Can my landlord charge me to unlock my bedroom door when I was never given the key in the first place?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2022 12:34 PM PST

Title pretty much says it all.

The previous tenants in my apartment asked the landlord to add a key lock to one of the bedroom doors. This room ended up being mine.

Fast forward to a few weeks ago I got locked out of the room. I called to have them come and unlock and was told there would be a $70 CHARGE! I was never given the keys by them when I moved in. On top of that I didn't even know my bedroom door had a key until this happened.

Now I'm trying to get the charge removed and they are telling me that it doesn't matter that I was never given the key. I am still on the hook for the charge.

    Is this even legal?

I’m in a rural area. The neighbor’s unleashed dogs are outside in -1 F degree weather without any sort of shelter. Can I get in trouble if I let them into my property at night?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2022 09:44 PM PST

Like the title says. My neighbor has free-roaming dogs. More specifically, a Great Pyrenees, a pit bull mix, and two of their puppies. I don't know if they are fed or watered but they look healthy and we leave out any leftovers we have. The neighbor says when a dog gets hit by a car he just gets another one. I'm REALLY not a fan of this for obvious reasons— why even have dogs if they aren't part of the family? Unfortunately, I live in a rural area and doubt animal control will do anything about it.

Anyway, I've come to love these dogs. They come running every time I get home, get lots of pets, get fresh food and water etc. I don't know their names but they respond to what I call them. I had assumed my neighbors had the decency to let the dogs in the garage on cold nights, but nope. Drove home tonight and found the poor Pyrenees sleeping on the doorstep. The pit bull was inside, but the puppies were out by the side of the house.

We put out an old dog bed up against our house and made a makeshift shelter with our car for protection against the wind, but I'm tempted to just let them in the garage. If I let them out again in the morning, will it still be considered theft?

Wife's company wants to deduct ~$3,000 from paychecks if you don't go to Mexico (IL)

    Posted: 05 Jan 2022 08:11 AM PST

This is concerning a "company trip" to Mexico. Its one of those boozy, all expense paid trips with lots of corporate activities, meant as a sort of bonus/reward for being with the company. Apparently they do this every year, though I think they canceled it last year. The trip is planned for about 2 weeks from now. My wife only recently joined and does not qualify to go on the trip (fine by her), so I only have 2nd hand details. Here's what I know.

When the details were finalized months ago on who would attend, no one signed any contracts saying they would pay if they didn't want to go later. They just provided their identification documents for the company to book hotels/flights.

Obviously the world is going through a new wave of COVID and has a lot of people fearful of flying/traveling. While Mexico does not require a negative COVID test to enter (from the USA anyway), the company is requiring a negative test from employees within 48 hours before the trip.

That at all makes sense to me, however, if an employee tests positive for COVID before the trip, they will not be allowed to go AND will have the cost of the trip/cancellation fee of ~$3,000 deducted from their pay. Also, if an employee decides today they just don't want to go/risk it, they are still required to have the $3,000 deducted from their pay because "it is too late to cancel without incurring penalties".

Here's our question. Is this legal? To threaten this, or to actually go through with this? I know there are fairly strict laws about what a company can or cannot deduct from a paycheck. Do employees have any legal recourse if they don't want to go on the trip/pay? Can the company force employees to pay for this (even if they quit)? Her coworkers are naturally pretty mad, and we'd like to help.

EDIT: Not sure if it was clear, but if employees DO go on the trip, they will NOT be required to pay $3,000. It would be company-paid.

Employer telling me not to tell coworkers about positive covid test

    Posted: 05 Jan 2022 12:33 PM PST

Pretty much as the title says. I got a covid test today despite not having symptoms because I was exposed to 3 people who tested positive. I also tested positive. I then told some coworkers that I had contact with to get tested just in case because I tested positive. My employer said I can't tell people about me having it. They also said that since the other people tested positive but don't have symptoms, they would have been fine to work if I hadn't told them. My question is: can I get fired for telling a coworker I have covid?

Contract to have $10k new windows installed in home…. contractor did poor work

    Posted: 05 Jan 2022 07:43 PM PST

Contract states 20% down with 80% due "upon completion of the work". They finished installation Thursday afternoon, that first night we noticed significant cold air daft leaking from each Window.
Friday morning we hired a certified Home Inspector to take a look, he immediately noticed the issue, and documented with infrared photos and a detailed write up.
Friday afternoon we shared this report with the Window company, letting them know the severity of the issue, and that we would submit the final 80% when the issue was resolved.
They didn't care and demanded full payment. Monday the head of the company came to our home to see for himself, and told us "there is no air leak" (while holding a detailed report from a third party confirming there was). He then took the position that he would not leave until paid in full. Escalated threats to "I will have my guys come up here right now and rip these windows out, and your baby can sleep in the cold with giant holes in your home".
After 1 hour of threats I was able to convince him to leave stating I would pay half, and half after the issue was resolved.
When he returned to to his office, went back to demanding payment in full again.

Should we: continue to withhold payment until "work is complete" and if he doesn't fix the issue, have him try and sue us to pay? Or Pay in full now, and go to small claims court to deal with the issue ?

The contract states "upon completion of the work" and the windows are missing pieces (all be it small) and are documented not keeping cold air out

    Rats at work

    Posted: 05 Jan 2022 08:42 PM PST

Canada, British Columbia. I work at a Deli and saw a rat tonight, but my coworker told me I couldn't tell anyone or I would "be fired." She was told by the earlier crew to keep it a secret. Apparently we have to tell our immediate manager and nobody above them, even though said manager is barely in the store when I'm working since I work late (and seems to know when to make herself scarce when you need her...). Oh, and we are unionized which takes money out of my paycheck.

So how illegal is this? Clearly my manager is going around telling people to stay silent. There is no way this is okay, right?

    Child support questions

    Posted: 05 Jan 2022 11:47 PM PST

My daughters father moved to a different province and started a new family. Blocked all my info but I finally got ahold of him. He's never paid $1 in child support at he was in jail for a couple years and after I thought he wasn't all there mentally, turns out he started a whole family and wants nothing to do with my daughter.

I'm wondering what my next steps are and how far back I can go for child support owed. ?

I'm getting a lawyer but of course I have so many questions.

I don't have his address or anything just cell number. I should mention I'm in Canada.

Can GA landlord lock you out of your *horse* property?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2022 10:40 AM PST

I rented a pasture + barn for 13 months, gave my 30 day notice to vacate on 12/8. Month to month agreement. Landlord and I agreed on the move out dates via text & I moved my 3 horses on 1/2/22 with understanding I would be back in 2 days to pick up my 30 bales of hay. On 1/4 I met up w/ my hay hauler as planned & pulled up to discover the gate code had been changed. I went ahead paid the hay hauler the agreed upon $160 & he said we could come back once I got the lock figured out. Landlord texted me that night and said "sorry, I have Covid and got your move out dates mixed up & thought you were coming next weekend. I changed the locks yesterday." Admitting that he changed the locks while my property was still there, doesn't really make sense. In Georgia, does horse barn rentals fall under landlord tenant laws that prohibit landlords from locking a tenant out of their property storage before the agreed upon move out date? I'm tempted to ask the landlord to reimburse me for the hauler fee and just buy those 30 bales from me at FMV to use for the other horses still there. I'm 38 years old, so not trying to play high school games.. just want my money back from the wasted Tuesday trip and/or my hay. 😒 I figured Reddit might have some insight!? TIA!

    Forced to resign?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2022 09:19 PM PST

Today when I came to work I was told that either I would have to resign or be fired. I told my manager she could terminate me I understand. She says, I would rather you quit. I ask why can't she fire me? She doesn't answer and proceeds to tell me she needs me to quit. I say okay and leave. She was hounding me to quit and it seemed suspicious, when I got home I looked up employees who force employees to resign. I've told HR about this and management wants to hear from me. But what do I do in this situation? How should I respond to their questions? I'm pretty sure they're going to try to convince me that's not what happened for legal issues. She also didn't go through Hr and pulled me aside instead.

Note— I was not fired for doing anything illegal or wrong in the workplace.

She was mad I left work 20min after my scheduled clock out time im not a salaried employee and no one asked me to stay overtime. I normally leave at my scheduled time or close to it any other day.

    This is in the US.

friends dad died, family is saying if he wants to claim any of his dads stuff (as next of kin) he has to take everything (several rooms of useless clutter and old furniture) and clean the house (which belongs to the family)

    Posted: 05 Jan 2022 09:00 PM PST

    Ontario, Canada

So my friends family (grandmother, 2 aunts and 1 uncle) are real pieces of shit. The dad didnt have a will so that certainly did not help the situation. The dad died christmas morning, they forced his son (30 year old with not much money and whose mom died when we were 16) to pay for the entire funeral/burial or else they wouldnt have had one, while also verbally harassing him for even having the thought of not having one because he cant afford it. They have told him to take out loans /credit cards and all sorts of BS.

They have told him he is not getting a cent from the house that his dad lived in (over a million since its in GTA). His grandparents bought his dad the house and the dad paid cash rent with no records of it.

They have told him that if he wants any of his dads stuff that may be useful/sentimental (photos, memorabilia, a dodge stealth, power tools, a boat etc.) as next of kin he has to take every last piece of crap thats in that house so that the house is empty and ready to be sold. After all the money spent on the funeral he cant afford to be renting a dumpster or a cleaning team, but he obviously would like some of the stuff.

Does he have any recourse? Or do they now get to use his dads death to screw him one last time before he puts that entire family in the rear view.

    Thanks

TLDR: does my buddy have to clear and clean the 95% of the houses crap to be able to claim the 5% of stuff he actually wants

Cat treated for leg injury gets kidney failure

    Posted: 05 Jan 2022 09:41 PM PST

Hi I took my cat to a animal er for soft tissue damage in his back legs. I had a follow up appointment with my local vet a week later and they had prescribed a medication to try and help but they misweighed him which led to a higher dose of medicine and then the following week we took him in for a check up as he started to get sick on the medicine and it turns out the medication gave him kidney failure. They were suppose to get information from the er vet on the initial visit but never did and tried to claim the kidney failure was chronic and not brought on by the medicine but backed out of that statement when I asked why they hadn't looked at the paperwork from the er vet. They were saying they knew nothing about it. They then admitted fault and offered to pay for the services out of their own pockets. Now after the initial service at today's follow up it was showing that while he got better his kidney values were getting worse again. They wanted us to pay for todays service and tomorrows as well and after a bit of back and forth they waived both but were saying we would have to pay for any other services related to this issue after tomorrows service. Long story short my cat was seen for a leg injury and is now dealing with kidney failure/damage. Do I have any case here for malpractice? This is in Texas.

I am 17 years old and I am a digital artist. My question is, is it ok for someone to commission me nsfw. Another question is can I post nsfw related work without it being for profit??

[US, CA] Coworker got too close?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2022 11:24 PM PST

To keep a long story short, recently a coworker and I got into a verbal dispute and he got WAY too close to my face about it. Twice. He came back like 5 minutes later after he changed his work uniform. You know that cliche when two gangsters square up against each other and get close enough to kiss while talking smack? Yeah he was like that. Except I was trapped in a corner of the store (both times due to the layout behind a register) with only a small space to the left I might've been able to slip through. But I wasn't sure how to react in this situation and I just kept still. I told my manager about the incident but it seems like there is going to be no real disciplinary measures against my coworker? And there is going to be a note left on my record about this, because I didn't handle things correctly (not entirely sure about this but it seems that was the gist of it)? By the way, the second time he went into the store and got up in my face WITHOUT a mask. So yeah.

Should I contact HR about this? I really didn't think he could be that unhinged over a verbal dispute; little bit concerned he might slash my tires in the parking lot or worse to be honest. I am not saying I'm innocent (I could've just dropped the subject instead of continuing the conversation), but this guy took it too far in my opinion. I am particularly concerned because I don't even know if he is vaccinated or not. Seems some of my other coworkers noticed he has a temper problem too. Anyways, I just want some justice served and want to know how I could go about it and/or what steps to take next. Thanks for your time and sorry if this is all over the place. Happened a little bit ago and just by remembering it I'm getting perturbed about it.
