I dropped my car off at the dealership for a check engine light.

I've called twice since I dropped it off last week asking for an update and quote for repairs. I was only quoted the diagnosis price (around $350) at drop off.

I finally got a call back today that my car is done. I was very confused and asked the dealer what they had done as they had never communicated to me what the problem was.

The service advisor goes on to tell me I needed new pistons, rings, and a new catalytic converter system, to the tune of ~$4200

    Can dealerships do this?

Logging company crossed property line and accidently cut down my dads trees.

    Posted: 10 Jan 2022 03:11 PM PST

Recently the neighbors hired someone to log their forest for walnut and oak lumber. The contractors crossed the line and ended up cutting over a dozen 100 year old oak and walnut trees down on my dad's property..

He works hard maintaining walking and horse trails on his 40 acres and these trees are "priceless". This is his lifes dream to have his own oasis and the loss has devastated him.

The contractor states he has only caused 500 worth of damage.

My dad should obviously get a lawyer right?

    Fetal Anomaly

    Posted: 10 Jan 2022 01:19 PM PST

My last ultrasound came back with multiple fetal anomalies that could suggest serious birth defects. My doctor told me not to worry about it and refuses to refer me to a specialist for further testing. My baby is due in a little over a month. In my state, I have passed the point for legal termination, but with a proper diagnosis, I could travel to another state to terminate the pregnancy. I told my doctor this, and I feel like they are stalling to prevent me from getting test results in time. They blamed the ultrasound and said it was probably inaccurate, but then, if that were the case, what would the harm in getting me the testing I needed in order to make an informed decision in a timely manner? This was a wanted pregnancy, but I do not have the means to care for a child with serious birth defects, as I am a single mom with limited resources who already has children. When I called my doctor's office to ask for a referral to a specialist, they have ignored my requests. My insurance will not let me switch OB's this late in the pregnancy or see a specialist without a referral. Please help!

[WA State] Neighbor snapped, tossing shovels in the street 3 hours every night for months.

    Posted: 10 Jan 2022 03:33 PM PST

Neighbor doesn't like that we built a deck. (FWIW it was permitted, inspected, etc.)

He used to be a normal neighbor, but we put a deck up and he went nuts. Started bad mouthing us to other neighbors, papered over his windows, replaced social justice signs in his yard with 'owner is armed' and other gun signs.

About 3 night / week he will spend 1-4 hours between midnight and 5am standing at the base of our driveway tossing a shovel up in the air and letting it clang down in the street. This is by our bedroom window, it keeps us up at night.

Sometimes it will be some other activity. For example, taking out the trash, spilling the bin into the street, cleaning it up loudly, but then bringing the bin back to his house. He'll repeat the whole dance until his session is over.

He won't be approached, just turns and goes inside if we come out to confront him. He has no nearby relatives or acquaintances that visit. He's divorced, probably in his 70s, and lives alone.

We called the cops twice. They come out, but can't do anything without evidence. He claims he's being discriminated against for being a night owl. After all, he's only taking out his trash, or edging his grass.

It went on for two months, we put up a conspicuous camera and he stopped for three months, but now he's back at it. That's a long time to be mad about a deck. We have fifty or so hours of footage of this guy just dropping garden tools in the street at 3 in the morning.

Before we go to the police with documentation... what is he guilty of?

Does this meet the bar for harassment under WA law? If so, the police will handle it.
If it can only considered private nuisance then we have to go to court to get an injunction against... idk what.
It might not even technically clear the bar for a noise violation in our city since shovel throwing sound is short and intermittent. He would need to throw the shovel 90 times in an hour to clear that bar. His actual rate is more like one throw every 1-5 minutes.

What to do? Persistent menacing for months on end is getting scary.

I'm not a violent guy & have no criminal record at all, and I only bought it because it looked cool & wanted to start a collection... How fucked am I?

Private investment club in MA holding my $30k refuses to provide info about investment

    Posted: 10 Jan 2022 01:03 PM PST

A company I invested in has demonstrated a decade of elusive behavior and excuses of why I am not allowed to attend any annual shareholders meetings, be on the shareholders mailing list, or have any ability to exercise our voting rights allowed by our shares:

I am not an accredited investor, nor had any idea what such terms meant when I invested in the company many years ago.

For the last few years now, I've repeatedly:

    1) emailed,

    2) called, and

    3) met in person with the President (who threatened to countersue me if I ever took action against the company) and the individual who ran the investment club who I invested through

    I have been requesting:

    1) more information about the company,

    2) access to annual shareholders meetings,

    3) access to shareholders webinars,

    4) access to the shareholders mailing list,

    5) updates on our shares & investment, and

    6) asked for an exit on our investment;

    and since that time I:

    1) have not been invited to or informed of annual shareholders meetings,

    2) allowed access to shareholders webinars,

    3) allowed access to the shareholders mailing list,

    4) provided detailed and timely updates on the progress of the company or our shares.

(The company and the individual that ran the investment club have both occasionally been responding but not taking things seriously - they keep telling me to wait like I'm a joke)

The company has also changed course from the product I originally invested in. It is NO LONGER making that product and has since been pursuing alternative business ventures (I was not able to get timely information from the President and the individual that ran the investment club about this).

Can someone please let me know if I have a case here and if it's possible to retrieve the money I invested? Any help would really mean a lot!

Car got ticket while in the shop

    Posted: 10 Jan 2022 06:11 PM PST

I had my car serviced at a local dealership recently, but haven't had a chance to pick it up due to holiday travel and other complications. The shop has had it since 12/18/21. But I received a $300 ticket in the mail today showing a photo of my car blowing a red light on 12/28/21- while it was in the shop's possession. The ticket came with a form allowing me to claim that I wasn't driving at the time- which I should be able to prove- but would that be the end of it for me? Will the dealership then be liable? Should I address it with them? My brother thinks I should ask for the amount of the ticket to be removed from the bill, but I'm not really looking for trouble tbh. If I can get out of the ticket with no repercussions (I think I can) then I would probably prefer that to getting involved in some kind of legal dispute with a large company or trying to strongarm somebody. I'm curious what other people think, tho. Could this come back to haunt me in any way, legally?

    Thanks in advance.

Apartment had my car towed for not driving it enough?

    Posted: 09 Jan 2022 08:18 PM PST

    Update: 1/10, 2pm MTN

    Hey all,

I contacted the landlords, quoted the lease and Colorado abandoned car laws, threated to take the case to small claims, but that I would prefer to settle it if they had my car towed back to my apartment complex instead of me going to get it and paying the fees for it being released. They agreed and apologized. My car was back in the same spot they towed it from (lol) by 2pm today.

Thank you all for the advice and support, never give up or give in if you think you've been wronged.

    Hey there all,

Ever since covid I started working from home, because of that I rarely have a need to drive my car any longer. I drive it about once a month to make sure its all running good and park it back in the same spot. My landlords sent me an email Friday saying I need to drive my car more or they will tow it, or I could pay an extra $100 a month for a garage and leave my car in there (extortion?) I said that sounds ridiculous but I will move it to a different spot once the snow clears (recently heavy snow in CO) if that's the issue. Waking up Sunday, before the snow had even cleared, my car is gone. I've messaged the apartment complex and a lawyer, but it's Sunday so neither are open.

Note: my car works, is registered, licensed, and insured, has a parking permit for the lot, was parking in the correct spot, I've been a resident here for 2 years without issue before (new managers).

Is this predatory towing as well as some other things, possibly extortion for offering to not tow my car if I paid for a garage, but then having it towed when I refused? Can they legally request I drive the car more often? This sounds some like form of discrimination just because I don't work a normal job.

Dog was attacked and daycare employee lied about it (TX)

    Posted: 10 Jan 2022 10:00 AM PST

I was on vacation last week and boarded my dog at a daycare. At pick up, I noticed several scratches and scabs on his head/face and asked the employee about it. She said she would get the manager to check the footage but he most likely did it to himself by excessively scratching. I found several extensive injuries to his paw, tail and leg. They also neglected to give his full medication dosages despite going over this with the same employee and them having an electronic record.

I spoke at length with the manager yesterday who informed that he was attacked by another dog which led to 4 more jumping in. The employee didn't report it. The last time my dog visited, the same dog bit him on the neck. He's going to the vet tomorrow to get checked out.

What are my best options and course of action?

Child lost in the system after dads death

    Posted: 10 Jan 2022 08:22 AM PST

Florida man here. My sister was with a guy for about ten years, the guy had kids with another woman one of which is named E. E has been living with me even while his dad was alive, my sister had power of attorney from dad and was able to get him enrolled in school that way. E's dad died about a year ago and no one has tried to contact us regarding E. The mother signed away her rights and the older siblings are in touch with him but no one has tried to visit or call the department of children and families on his behalf. I want to reach out to them so that he can get insurance and the other things he needs. We do not have his social or birth certificate. My biggest concern is that DCF will take the child away and put him with the abusive grandmother. I know that I have no legal rights so E, but i also know that I am the best shot at this kid having a normal life. What will happen when I reach out to them? E is 14.

Found out sibling is siphoning money out of Elderly parents checking account

    Posted: 10 Jan 2022 05:03 PM PST

My 90 year old mother was recently involved in a minor fender bender and while looking over her checking account statement, I noticed many "checking withdrawal to cash" entries. My sister was also named on the account to "help mom out" but has withdrawn $12000 of the $14000 mom had in her account. My mother is devastated by this as she had no idea it was happening and in no way approved any of these withdrawals. My question is, does my mother have any legal recourse to recoup the money since my sister was named on the account? Obviously I want to handle this without the courts involved but my sister seems to think she had some kind of "right" to take the money. Just looking for a little guidance in this mess of a situation. Thank you in advance

Italian passport sent for renewal almost 5 months ago without update

    Posted: 11 Jan 2022 02:52 AM PST

Ok so I went to renew my passport at the Italian Consulate of Bristol sometime in the month of July, but the consular agent suggested that we leave the passport with him and as soon as i turn 18 (sometime in August) he would process my application as an adult, which would make it so that the Passport expires in 10 hears and not 5, which is the standard for under 18s.

However, it has been almost 5 months since my 18th birthday, and i was told that i'd receive my passport in mid October.

I have tried contacting the consular, but he doesn't acknowledge my texts and doesn't let me call him.

What can i do now to get my renewed Passport?

[NC] Landlord is behaving inappropriately. What are my options and is his behavior illegal?

    Posted: 10 Jan 2022 06:28 PM PST

I just moved into a rental house 2 months ago after my divorce. The initial "screening" process included my having to meet my landlord and his entire family twice, as well as multiple phone conversations where I was asked all kinds of personal questions, completely unrelated to my ability to pay rent.

On move in day, I was supposed to meet my landlord to pick up the keys. When I arrived, he told me that he did not have copies of the keys and that I needed to get into his car and ride with him to the hardware store to get copies. He refused to wear a mask and spent the entire car ride telling me personal details about his life, how he was in an arranged marriage, and complaining about his wife and children. He made several comments that were making fun of his wife for various things. He then began asking about my ex husband, why we were divorced, and when I would be seeking a new "suiter." I mostly managed to avoid answering by awkwardly changing the subject many times. During this ride and trip to the hardware store, his body language was creepy. Standing too close, staring into my eyes too long, bizarre pauses after questions. I don't know how to explain it. I got the keys and he finally left after standing in my doorway attempting to make small talk for 20 mins.

1 week in he calls to inform me that he purchased a new garage door opener and requests that I meet at my house to get it. I suggest that we meet in public because I do not want to be alone with this guy. He agrees to meet at a coffee shop. This of course turns into a 45 minute conversation where he asks more personal questions and suggests that we go for a hike sometime. I laugh it off and say that I don't hike much.

Another week later and he calls saying he wants to send multiple repair men over to get quotes for a completely unnecessary job. 2 guys come out. He calls and tells me that he is not going to do the repair, but we should meet to "catch up." I decline. He asks about the new furniture I've purchased and requests that I send him photos of the items because he's interested in getting new furniture himself... When I tell him about the bed I purchased, he said he would like to "try that out sometime."

He texts me multiple times to see "what I'm up to," to wish me Merry Christmas and see who I'm spending it with, then Happy New Year. He asks to come over to "help me" change my air filters (wtf.)

He then texts me multiple times in the middle of the night a few nights ago telling me I'm lucky that I didn't have to spend my holiday with my family like he did because I'm a "free bird." I don't respond, so he called me the following day to ask if he'd upset me. I again laugh it off and just say I hadn't seen his text yet. During this call he proceeds to ask about my ex husband again and if I'm looking for a new boyfriend, in a super creepy voice. I awkwardly say no and make up an excuse to get off of the phone.

I don't know what to do at this point. I am stuck in an 18 month lease. I've never rented without a property manager as middleman. There is no one for me to contact to report his behavior. This is my first time living alone in many years and I can't imagine that this will not be ramping up. The area I live in has a very competitive rental market, so while I would love to just tell him to fuck off, I am concerned he could make my life difficult somehow. I am going to begin recording his calls and saving texts, but is his behavior even illegal? If I upset him and he begins creating problems for me, do I have any recourse? I added an amendment to my lease prior to signing stating that he is required to provide 24 hours telephone notice to enter the house, so I assume he won't be stopping by, but I would like to have zero contact with him about anything other than maintenance or rent.

HOA does not want us to build our ADU on the back our yard, we want it on the side of the yard.

    Posted: 10 Jan 2022 10:29 PM PST

So we live in CA and by law we're allowed to build an ADU. We live in an HOA so you already know how that goes. Our back yard with a pool and behind the pool is sitting area with a 10x10 water wall that recycled the water back to the pool. We do not want the ADU there because we just completely remolded the pool and backyard ($300k) and added this water wall addition. Everything is to code and legal. The problem is that our neighbor on the side where we want it build thinks it will devalue him home because the back of the ADU will facing his yard. HOA says it's blocks his sunset and no one wants a building next to their fence which I kinda get. But there literally no where else to put it unless I rip up the back yard again and re-route all the pipes underneath the cement.

This is my question: If the city already approved the location and drawing and everything else, then what can the HOA legally do? They can't evict us, even the city guy said so. I'm thinking of just building where the city approved and to hell with the HOA.

please let me know what if I can legally move forward with this idea.

    Thanks!!

Should I sue my best friend after he crashed my car while I wasn't there?

    Posted: 10 Jan 2022 11:15 PM PST

So this happened around a year ago, my best friend was taking my other friend out for a sec because we were going to surprise the other friend for his birthday.

I let him take my car, he wasn't under the influence or anything. I was at home and I get a call from my bestie saying he crashed into someone. My bestie lied to me and said he wasn't at fault, paid me a bit for the deductible and I ended up getting my car repaired which raised my insurance rate but since I'm a dumbass and forgiving I let it go. For months I didn't know that technically he was at fault and the other person is charging my insurance for medical injuries. 67 thousand dollars...

Now that I know he WAS at fault and he injured someone I want him to reimburse me 100%. The car is done now but I can't pay for their medical and my insurance is crazy expensive. He's claiming he won't be able to pay for it because he's "scared his moms going to find out" but my family isn't that well off in the first place and my father and I are struggling heavily because of this. I think it's beyond that and I want to sue him. What yall think?

HOA needs to treat entire buildings for termite. We (tenants) need to vacate for a week. How much should our landlord reimburse us?

    Posted: 10 Jan 2022 06:46 PM PST

Hi! I live in Downtown Tampa, and I am renting a condo unit with my roommate within a private gated community. Our private gated community has townhouses, a big condo building, and a small condo building. My HOA is scheduled to treat termites for a week in February, during which no one in our gated community can inhabit. Therefore, my roommate and I are forced to find lodging (probably hotel) during this time. I wanted to ask, for the week that we aren't able to inhabit our condo, we should be able to request reimbursement from our landlord, right? What amount should we be reimbursed of? Does our landlord have a responsibility to reimburse our hotel expenses? Thanks for your help!

I fell prey to an illegitimate towing company

    Posted: 10 Jan 2022 05:00 PM PST

About 2 months ago my area was hit by a snowstorm. I was cut off by another vehicle and got into an accident. I called a towing company to come and help out and within 10 mins a company did arrive but it was not the one I requested.

They explained they got the call but in my state of panic I couldn't put 2 and 2 together and realize it wasn't the one I ordered and I accepted his help.

Since it was after-hours, most garages were closed so he offered to drop my car off in his compound and promised it would be safe and my insurance would come pick it up the next day no problem and free of charge.

Little did I know they were not legit and they instead held my car for Ransome and asked a ridiculous price to release my car to my insurance. They were asking over 2500$... this price has gone up every day by thousands of dollars and despite the efforts to negotiate from my insurance, these crooks refuse to comply. They are not commercial at all, it's a company run by a few 20 year old crooks and they don't even have a business location.

My Insurance has been fighting for 2 months now to negotiate a price but to no avail. The last update I received is they were going to bring them to court but the towing company has stopped answering.

What can I do at this point? How long can the court proceedings take? Am I better off just stealing my car back? The current price they are asking for is most likely well over 50k and my car isn't even worth that. I'm lost and I don't know what to do next.

boss asked to touch my boobs

    Posted: 10 Jan 2022 10:35 AM PST

update: thank you to everyone for the replies. about an hour ago, i told my boss to go fuck himself and left the office.

hey. i work for a really small company (6 people including myself) in northern virginia. i'm 24 and trans male to female.

i informed my boss (23 Male) that i was trans and all and told him that if he had questions about it, feel free to ask me. this was a few months ago.

2 weeks ago, i told my boss that i'm quitting february 18th since i'm moving out of state. i forgot to wear a bra to work a few days later and he started asking me questions about my body and then asked if my breasts were real and i said yes they are. then he asked if he could touch them, and i said no. i told his boss/dad (50 male) and he said "well maybe now you will remember to wear a bra to work.".

a few hours ago, he was asking me questions about sexuality stating that he read somewhere online that undergoing hormone replacement therapy can change your sexuality (this is true) and then he asked me if i "like to suck dick".

i just texted his dad (he works in another office on the other side of the city) and he left me on read for the past 2 hours, though he's been on the phone with his son (my boss). they're speaking in arabic so i'm not sure what they're talking about but they're both laughing some.

i'm not really sure what to do, or if there is something legal that can be done. i assume that if it was brought to a legal attention, the son nor dad would be hard pressed to say "yeah this happened.".

i'm moving at the end of february, and honestly thinking about quitting right now.

Oregon - Assaulted on my doorstep, used deadly force. DA on my side but could this turn around on me?

    Posted: 11 Jan 2022 02:37 AM PST

So I was assaulted on my doorstep and used deadly force to escape an attack from 2 assailants. During the scuffle I was stabbed once which was nothing compared to what happened to them. I was detained after police arrived who I contacted, and was released without charges from the hospital after speaking with detectives. Ive been attempting to follow the case when I noticed they both filed motions for discovery, then retained Attorneys. They are both felons, one on parole, and have both been released on bail and agreements.

The DA picked up the case, I have been cooperating from the beginning, but could this still turn on me and I end up being charged with multiple charges?

Witnesses gave statements who witnessed what happened which helped my case, as well as the fact it was in front of my door, and i escaped and didn't continue to cause harm although they did try to chase me. The DA told me they weren't concerned with my actions but theirs, which leads me to believe I'm still in the clear. I haven't spoken to an attorney yet but should I? I'm unsure of how criminal law works.

    Any thoughts or opinions appreciated.

Paid for special seating at an event, but the event could not seat me and refuses to provide a full refund

    Posted: 10 Jan 2022 05:15 PM PST

I attended an event last weekend and purchased a group ticket (priced at ~$1400) where we would be sat at a table with a prepaid meal. The event had general admission tickets and then special-priced tickets for tables. Anyone that purchased a ticket would have access to their open bar, but you needed specific tickets to be sat at a table. There were two seating options, indoor and outdoor seating, priced differently. We purchased the outdoor seating.

After arriving at the event, we show our tickets and are brought outside. The employee that brought us out says this area is sold out and then brings us back in to be seated at an indoor table, stating they'll bring us a bottle of wine to compensate. We argue saying that we didn't pay for this table and wanted to be sat outside as we had paid extra!

We end up speaking with one of the managers at the event and he brings us to the front desk to resolve this issue. We are told that we should receive a table and that someone will come to help us shortly. (We had to stay at the front desk because the event was oversold and staff were overwhelmed and could only chat for a few minutes at a time). They keep passing our issue onto different managers and telling us to wait. It takes 2 hours for someone to come and help us only for them to tell us to email someone for a full refund.

So now at this point, it's apparent they oversold the event and the table we bought, and had us waiting for 2 hours for that response. The next day I go on to email the event coordinator for a refund and they state they will not offer a refund. The ticket did have a warning that tickets are final sale regardless of attendance. However, this circumstance is different because they were offering tickets at an increased price for special seating/services they were not able to deliver.

After some back and forth, they said the most they can do is offer a refund for the difference of the ticket price we paid and that of general admission since they admitted us into the event. We stated that we wanted a full refund because we only purchased the tickets under the impression that we would be seated outdoors. Had it been any other circumstance we would have not attended the event at all. Additionally, since they had us aimlessly waiting for 2 hours, we didn't even reap the benefits of the event. I think it is completely unfair to promise someone a service, have them pay extra for that service, and then not deliver. I would have not attended under just general admission, I only attended because they provided seating and a meal.

Are they in the wrong, is a full refund possible? They have already been unprofessional via email. Is this something disputable?

In 1992, my brother worked for an American oil company overseas and he was killed by two gunshots while working in an oil rig. We sued the company back then and got some money in Egypt and we were offered to come to the united states and sue them but we refused due to the situation at the time. We got some money and we still got the case ongoing until today in Egypt. Is it possible to move the case to the united states since I live here right now and sue to the company still or is it too late at this point.

If your asked to check on a person's dog's that are not known to be vicious and they turn out to be so, and break a screen door as your entering the home to feed them and they attack a person, is there a way to fight the lawsuit the dog owners lawyers open on you to deflect cost of the insurance payout of the victim(s)

Am I legally allowed to own two cars in different states? And can I drive them in both states?

I work full time in California. I own a house and a car here. Car is registered in California I recently bought another house and a car in Montana. This is my vacation house. Car is registered in Montana.

There are a few months of the year where I would like to use the Montana car in California. I would stay in California for around 2 months at a time, 1-2 times a year with the car.

I've heard of California cracking down on cars specifically from Montana due to cars being registered to an LLC to avoid taxes. I bring this up, not because I am doing this, but because I'm aware at how Montana plates in California on an expensive car usually means tax avoidance in the eyes of cops.

Do I really have to change my plates every time I want to use my Montana vehicle in California? Does my scenario really mean I need to change my registration each time? If pulled over, I would only have a California drivers license. I'm interested in any advice for avoiding this headache.

Could I lose my scholarship or get expelled for leaking my college’s active neglect of its students to the press?

I am a senior at a private university in a place where omicron is extremely bad. All other public universities in the area have postponed classes or switched to online for the first two weeks. Mine has not which was very surprising considering my college is very liberal and has been, in my opinion, even a little heavy-handed with Covid restrictions, but we all kind of accepted it and returned to classes.

Today was the first day back to classes, and I along with at least 4 others on my athletic team tested positive. This is not a huge issue for me considering I live in my own apartment, but it has put others in a difficult situation. Previously, if someone in a dorm room was quarantined, they were given daily meal drop offs and weekly laundry service since leaving your room and breaking quarantined could result in loss of housing, scholarships, or expulsion. We got a message from someone on the athletic department saying that the university was no longer offering food or laundry service to quarantined students.

Of course, students are free to leave and quarantine elsewhere, but many live hours if not states away and driving home is not feasible (especially if they are not feeling well). They were told to rely on friends for these needs, but people who do not live in the specific dorm building are not allowed to get in. The university has not sent out an email notifying student body of this, as far as I know it is only the students actively quarantined on campus who are receiving this information.

This is not the first time the university has sidelined the needs of its students. Last year we had pretty bad inclement weather that resulted in a loss of water and therefore, functioning toilets. Us students were informed to pee in the shower and, excuse my French, shit in a bag that was then to be thrown in the outdoor dumpster. This is especially disappointing in a school that charges over 60k a year in tuition.

I plan to anonymously contact local news services and tip them off about this because I don't see any other way the school would get it together. I would like to know if I could be identified by the university, and on the off chance I am, could there be repercussions? I'm set to graduate this fall and am on a full academic ride plus an NCAA athlete. Could I lose any of this? Isn't this protected under freedom of the press? Does that even apply since it's a private university?
