Posted: 11 Jan 2022 03:19 PM PST u/usdgrind posted a similar scenario and I have a feeling we are not the only two impacted. Long story short, we are both on the "Extended" payback plan, but our loan terms switched to "Standard" when our loan service provider changed from myfedloan to Mohela. This is ironic because everyone impacted was told: "The transfer of your loans will not affect your loan's existing terms, conditions, interest rates, loan discharge or forgiveness programs, available repayment plans, COVID-19 emergency payment pause or the 0% interest period...." I can't speak for u/usdgrind, but this changes my payment from ~$160 monthly to ~$460 (187% increase LOL). Unfortunately for us, Mohela claims they cannot switch us over to "Extended" because our current balance is under $30k. This doesn't make any sense because there is no documentation or communication that states once balances are under $30k, your loan terms change. The fact remains: we were both on the "Extended" plan and we provided no consent to switch over to the "Standard." If you are impacted, please contact Mohela and ask to speak to a supervisor (I am working with Richard). I also recommend creating a complaint with the Ombudsman Group (https://studentaid.gov/feedback-ombudsman/disputes/prepare). Don't let Mohela tell you there are other alternatives (refinancing, other payback options, or loan consolidation). I personally do not want any changes because my loans boost my credit score. My student loans are the oldest accounts on my credit report so they help boost my score by increasing my credit age. If I consolidate, this will hurt me because my credit age will decrease, thus lowering my score (during a time when I am looking to purchase my first home). [link] [comments] |
Looking forward to death (which is when I'll be out of student loan debt). Posted: 11 Jan 2022 03:02 PM PST Just a fun story for ya'. I just moved into a van … and I'll be retiring in three years … and a good part of my pension will be garnished. I'm so glad that I was encouraged to become a better citizen by attending a University. LOL [link] [comments] |
Posted: 11 Jan 2022 01:56 PM PST Hey debtbags, I'm curious how you are balancing saving for retirement with aggressive student loan payoff. I know there's a lot of subreddits that can sing the pros and cons of prioritizing one over the other, and believe me I've read well into it and have made decisions for myself. I'm more just curious as to how this community is going about it, since you all have a similar mindset to me regarding student loans (aka, we all seem to really hate them). [link] [comments] |
Any lenders think they can beat this? Posted: 12 Jan 2022 02:02 AM PST Let me cut to the chase. Can anyone offer me a loan better than 2.41 pct over 15 years on a $41k principal note balance? Assume I can readily produce a quote reflecting what I have already been offered, and have exemplary credit. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 12 Jan 2022 01:52 AM PST If I were to die, do I still have debt? I have parent plus loans, would my parent still have to pay it back? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 11 Jan 2022 06:40 PM PST Title says it all. Just can't find information. Just curious [link] [comments] |
Posted: 11 Jan 2022 05:00 PM PST Not too sure if this is the right place, but I'm really stressing out about this. Some years back, I was working on a bachelor's for another major. I didn't finish, though I came close. Last year I went back to school to pursue something else at a different school, but my new school is claiming I don't qualify for the pell grant because I received my bachelor's back then? I transferred from a community college recently and I received the grant with no issues. Can anyone give me some advice? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 11 Jan 2022 08:43 PM PST Just trying to gauge how good of credit I would need for a grad PLUS loan..I don't have an endorser/co-signer whatsoever. I know they can give you up to the COA but if your credit is newer would they give you less? For reference I'm worried because I started my credit at 18, now 22 & it's in the higher end of the "Good" range. Have ~25k in debt from Undergrad impacting the score. All my credit cards are good though. Thank you! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 11 Jan 2022 11:59 PM PST Does my question make sense? Does the 6 month grace period begin now as I'm no longer in school or does it begin in May? Lol ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ [link] [comments] |
What’s happening with FedLoan? Posted: 11 Jan 2022 12:40 PM PST I owe about $20k in student loans. For the last several days when logging in, I only see my loans that I paid in full. I do not see any of the loans that had balances. When I call, the automated message tells me the balance is $0 and I can't get a human on the phone. I have been paying throughout the pandemic to knock them down when they were at 0%. I had planned on applying for PSLF but hadn't yet. Where did my loans go? Anyone else experiencing this? Posted: 11 Jan 2022 07:59 PM PST I received a letter saying my autopay was lowered and said it would go into effect 02/01/22 are my payments starting then or is this just a heads up for when may hits? It specifically says "Beginning on 02/01/22, a new Auto Pay amount of ($XXXX) will be debited from your designated bank account for the student loans listed below" I usually understand the letters they send but this one confuses me especially since the date on the letter is 01/02/22 so they sent this after it was announced payments wouldn't start until may. Does anyone know if this is a scam? Posted: 11 Jan 2022 07:55 PM PST So, I should have researched about this place sooner and I have a strong feeling I am being scammed. I got a call from Student Prep Center in December. They told me I qualified for student loan forgiveness and all I would have to do is pay the difference of what they would forgive from my current balance. So they came up with a 4 monthly plan is $195. I made a mistake of sending them 2 of my pay stubs today and after I sent that I had a weird feeling in my gut that this doesn't seem legit. Not to mention they already charged for one of the $195 payment. I'm a bit scared now. I am definitely going to call Mohela during business hours but I just wanted to ask questions on here. I wish I had someone to talk to about this my parents do not really understand these kind of things and being the oldest I tend to make a lot of mistakes. So what do you guys think is this a scam and if so what should I do at this point? [link] [comments] |
Which Private Loan should I take out for a past due balance Posted: 11 Jan 2022 07:50 PM PST Hi I finished up a non-degree certificate program last December. I procrastinated on my FAFSA and couldn't have my loan processed in time, I accepted it in the school's portal after finals like a dumbass. But on to the next one, I was told to take out a private loan for a past due balance. I've checked nerdwallet and they suggest Sallie Mae, Ascent, College Ave, etc. Any specific loan I should take and anyone have good experience with repayments? I need to take out only $4000 btw [link] [comments] |
Posted: 11 Jan 2022 01:36 PM PST I have 31k in a private loan from bachelor's. Just started a master's program last summer. I'm currently paying the master's tuition as I go and making payments on the old loans. Would it make sense to take out new unsubsidized loans to pay off the private? Or just keep paying off the old ones as I have been? Current loans are at 4.5%. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 11 Jan 2022 01:28 PM PST Heyyyyyy I need some help here! Sooo I graduated college in 2017 and in 2019 my heartland ecsi loans disappeared from my credit reports. Does anyone know why? Also they keep harassing me for late payments when I've been constantly filing for forbearance because they are asking me to pay way too much money. I missed the very first payment because I didn't know how to sign up for forbearance with them because I had to fax the documents to them. And now I have a past due balance of over $3000. I just got a letter in the mail from them telling me to pay in 30 days or else. But we have had a stop on my loans all last year and till may of this year. Are they allowed to ask me?? Why does this feel like a scam? Ohh it's also a Perkins loans! Does anyone have a bad experience with heartland or is it just me?? [link] [comments] |
Can I get a loan after paying for the semester? Posted: 11 Jan 2022 04:41 PM PST Hey all, I had a loan for this year, but for some reason I still have a balance which is due in two days. If I pay out of pocket, can I get a reimbursement from a loan? [link] [comments] |
Tips for Contacting FedLoan Servicing? Posted: 11 Jan 2022 03:01 PM PST Does anyone know how to contact FedLoan Servicing? I have tried -- twice -- to call them, only to be put on hold for three hours before giving up. I have also sent two emails through the portal on their website over the past month, but haven't gotten a response back yet. Is there an ombudsman that people can use? Would I have better luck faxing them or sending a letter by mail? Thanks for your help. [link] [comments] |
