    Christmas Eve incident 😭 Insurance

    Christmas Eve incident

3 questions here and I'll keep the story short - Moving from SD to SC, driving through MO. Wife was pulling a trailer (Uhaul 5x8) in the dark (~10PM) with her minivan (with 3 of my kids as passengers) when she happened upon a disabled car in her lane with no lights on at all. She swerved to avoid the car, swerved again to avoid the ditch and swerved once more to avoid the median and opposite lanes of traffic. In all this swerving and saving of 7 lives (including 2 pax from the disabled car and someone that pulled them out), the trailer impacted the left quarter of her van and rendered it undriveable. Got a hold of Geico and got it sorted but here are some things that

    1) Fault - Can we fight the fault/at-failt verdict? Because there was no impact with the disabled vehicle, Geico deems this as an 'at-fault' incident. None of this happens if that car was not disabled in the middle of a traffic lane with NO lights on at all, but it feels like we are being punished for actually avoiding it.

    2) Rental car - We are covered for $50/ day upto $1500. Just got a call from the adjuster that we are only allowed 30 days with the rental. We would basically have to return or pay out of pocket for a rental before our van even starts getting worked on! Apparently Geico would get in "big trouble" if they extended past 30 days. Any ideas of how I can extend my rental past the 30 days?

    3) Switching insurances - We were planning on leaving Geico and switching to Traveler's since we were moving and plan on closing on a house soon. It was supposed to be a smooth transition but with this claim on-going, are there any reasons I should postpone the switch?

Sorry for the long post but this is my first time dealing with this and it has been an incredibly frustrating situation so far. 0/10, would not recommend getting into an accident during a move! TIA for any suggestions!

How can I get paid if I'm out of work due to an injury?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2022 07:00 AM PST

Hi. I'm new to this sub and new to insurance in general. I'm fairly young and not still sure exactly how the world works. I live in the US.

So I injured my arm working on my car about 9 months ago, outside of work. Something still isn't right, and I'm going to need to get it checked out. It's to the point where I have to call out of work because I can't move my arm some days because it gets exacerbated.

So while all this is going on, I may need surgery. How am I going to pay my bills? I don't think my job has Aflak or any company like that? I believe I just have basic insurance, sick pay, vacations...

Maybe there is some kind of leave of absence that would allow me to get paid? But I was skimming through my benefits and didn't see anything about LOA's due to work unrelated incidences. I suppose I could be wrong.

I guess I'm asking a couple of questions here. One is do jobs normally offer some type of benefit for this type of incident? I feel like this is a common occurrence for people I just don't know how to approach it. And two should I look into companies like Aflak to prepare for a long absence from my job?

    -Thanks.

Does the way car insurance handles other drivers in the same household increase crashes?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2022 06:47 AM PST

I want to get opinions of people who are more familiar with the intricacies of car insurance.

I live in Wyoming where road trips are common and driving conditions can be sketchy. We also have one of the highest vehicle fatality rates in the country.

The way I understand it is that you are generally required to add a domestic partner or spouse to an auto insurance policy in order for them to be covered when they drive the car. And doing that would increase your rates significantly so people avoid it if they can.

I have two friends (live together) who were recently on a long road trip. I think they felt pressure to only have the one who owned the car drive because of this.

Now there's more risk of a crash if one person is driving for 14 hours straight than two people switching off driving. Unless the other person is a really bad driver, the safer thing to do is take breaks and switch off, right? But if they aren't on your insurance policy, and you live with them, they would be driving uninsured…

I don't think this is intentional at all but requiring people who live in the same house to be on the policy seems like it could have a consequence of more drowsy driving. Or more uninsured driving. Either way, not great. What do you think? Thanks for any thoughts!

2 Location Coverage, and New Provider Recs

    Posted: 07 Jan 2022 12:14 AM PST

    Hi,

I think I have a bit of a unique situation with my car insurance, and wanted to see if anyone had recommendations for a new provider. I was in contact with Wawanesa recently and was told my arrangement was not possible with them.

I travel between my home and a family member's home often. Roughly twice a month, and I stay for anywhere between 2 and 14 days.

For years, I had an older car. When I bought a new car (and financed it). I didn't want to sell the older car. So I left it at my family member's place. This has been convenient because I'm not always the one driving to my family member's place -- I can now get dropped off and still have a car to use locally for my time in the area.

More recently, one of the members of that household has asked if they could use the older car to commute when I'm not in town - roughly 3x a week. They can use another car for the times I'm there, but sharing cars has become a problem.

I would like to be able to say "yes".

I've been getting really annoyed with my current agent's patronizing attitude (with Safeco) and, generally speaking, am tired of having to go through them for any little question or change.

But Safeco does allow me to have the old car with the family address and the new car with my current address, along with Renters and some nice perks like Gap, roadside, etc. I shopped around a tiny bit a few months ago but once the Wawanesa agent heard about the separate address scenario, she gave up on the "sale". This was a bummer, as the rates were looking better with them as well.

To sum it all up: Is there another provider that would allow me to accomplish the same thing? Preferably one with a solid online interface so I don't need the agent to be working to accomplish some simpler tasks?

First time home buyer, quote too cheap?

    Posted: 06 Jan 2022 11:10 PM PST

Hello, I'm getting ready to close on my first house in upstate NY. An 8 yr old 1200sqft 3bed 2 bath for $255,000. I got my first quote thru a broker for home and auto with NYCM. What I'm hung up on how cheap it is. $444 a yr, for home owners. I was expecting $1000+ I have to talk some more with the broker and get a couple more quotes, but I would love for some one to chime in, here is the quotequote

    Aggressive calling

    Posted: 06 Jan 2022 09:21 PM PST

About 8 months ago I asked for car insurance quotes. I chose 1. But now Allstate keeps calling me multiple times a day. When I say "you folks called 3 times this morning" they say it must have been another office. After 10 calls yesterday I had to put my phone on airplane mode. I have a lot of blocked numbers. Should I just call my senator for help?

Home Owner's Insurance Claim on Condo

    Posted: 06 Jan 2022 08:36 PM PST

We had a broken pipe in my unit recently. Per the plumber, pipe was damaged during renovations a couple of months ago; the plumber showed us the pipe and it does seem like it was damaged a few months ago and just failed recently due to use. Association washed their hands of it and told us to file a home ownership claim for all of the damage (inside of unit, pipes, etc.).

Today, my adjuster reached out to me. He told me that per the CC&R's, the association is responsible for "studs in." Since they do not specify liability within the CC&R's, HOA cannot "assign" damage to the home owner. They plan to go after the HOA as "primary" on the claim for any structural and plumbing damage and will only pay for my internal unit damage (e.g. drywall, flooring, etc.)

Does this sound accurate? I've never filed a claim in a condo before. I've been a SFH owner for decades and recently downsized.

You want Uninsured/Under-insured Motorist (UM)? "Bundling" required buy our package

    Posted: 06 Jan 2022 08:36 PM PST

I've been trying to get policy quotes for my business and came across an agency that claimed to have years of experience helping businesses in my industry. When i received quotes from them it was in the form an email with quotes 1-4.

    Basically they broke down into

    1. No Personal Use Liability & Full Coverage/UM/Optional Coverages "Package"

    2. No Personal Use Liability only (lowest quote)

    3. Personal Use Included Liability & Full Coverage/UM/Optional Coverages "Package" (Best Coverage)

    4. Personal Use Included Liability only

The prices were good but I wanted to compare it apples to apples with my current policy and quote for this upcoming year. That's when things got weird. The email only had the total price for the policy after taxes/fees and didn't include line prices for the premium of each type of coverage. I asked the Agent for a break down so I could compare it side by side to the quote my current agent has provided directly from the carrier. They quickly replied their quote was very detailed and I could ask specific questions if I wanted.

Ok, weird... so I did and the response was just as weird.

What's the premium for liability before taxes and fees? TAXES AND FEES ARE INCLUDED IN THE PRICE OF QUOTE

What's the premium for UM? YOU MUST BUY AS PACKAGE SEE 1/3

Full Coverage?YOU MUST BUY AS PACKAGE SEE 1/3

What's the Premium for the optional coverages?YOU MUST BUY AS PACKAGE SEE 1/3

They went on to say they give 4 choices when quoting and do not deviate from those choices as if I was looking at menu at a fast food restaurant. Take it or leave it. That's when it clicked that this agency didn't see it as worth their time to allow customers to pick and choose which coverages they think they need. In their wisdom they have determined that every customer's needs boil down to 4 options. This didn't sit right with me as my business and personal assets haven't grown to the point where I feel I need everything in their package, but I would like the protection that Uninsured/undersinsured motorist provides. Heck I might've even wanted full coverage but not all 3 of the other optional coverages.

I'm not sure about yall but in my state (GA) there are certain laws regarding UM coverage. The law offers alot of protection to consumers and even extends coverage to family members who live with you in most cases. That's why whenever you get a consumer or business auto policy in my state there's a separate form where you must either accept or reject UM coverage. So it got me thinking since when does your agencies "we only offer 4 options" policy trump state law?

So I replied back asking if I was correct in understanding that if I wanted UM coverage I had to get Full Coverage AND all the optional coverages in your "package"? If I decided to go with option 2 or 4 I would be forced to reject UM?

It was as if I had said the magic words and pricing appeared for UM in front of me.

Does anyone know if there's any sort of legislation against these kinds of take it or leave it "bundles"? I am certain based on state law UM MUST be offered to anyone buying insurance so I am sure they cannot force anyone to reject it for not wanting to buy into their "package".

As I type this out it sounds even more deceptive than I first thought. I considered asking my states insurance commission about it although they do have the best rates so far. Hopefully I can find another agency that's more friendly that uses the same carrier.

CAREER ADVICE: Trying to get entry level underwriting job, can’t even get interview…

    Posted: 06 Jan 2022 12:24 PM PST

    Hello everyone!

I'm trying to get an assistant underwriter job in the DFW metro and don't even meet the qualifications they're requiring for an ASSISTANT underwriting position. They are asking for 2-5 yrs of underwriting experience for an entry level position, the same that's required for a full time underwriter. I'm getting extremely aggravated to say the least, I have done a year internship in college and have a Business Mgmt degree and can't even get an INTERVIEW for an entry level job.

Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated so much!
