News inquiry re the accounting job market, your busy season, and how you all are doing Posted: 05 Jan 2022 11:58 AM PST Hello, numerate friends! I am a reporter with The Verge named Elizabeth Lopatto, and I've been lurking in your subreddit for a minute. I've seen a lot of frustration and burnout here, people posting about quitting their jobs or wanting to quit. I'd love to talk with you about it — one of my big interests is the relationship between real-world money and the internet. I'd like to know if what's going on here is representative for accounting at large, how the job market is treating you, and what the scale of accounting's Great Resignation is. I also wonder what that means for your busy season. If you are curious about my work, here are some samples, so you can get a sense of what to expect:Welcome to the stonk market Robinhood has figured out how to monetize financial nihilism Elizabeth Holmes was always in control Please DM me, reply here, or email me at [liz@theverge.com](mailto:liz@theverge.com). I'd love to hear from you! [link] [comments]

You guys were right. Busy season at B4 is truly awful Posted: 05 Jan 2022 06:36 AM PST Just started my 1st busy season as an experienced associate at B4 and I constantly wonder if I have what it takes to get through this busy season, let alone this entire year. I have been working ~50-55 hours since September and I thought it was doable until when busy season officially started. It's been straight up, wake up at 5am and work until 9pm since we have so much work. I have 30 client contacts I have to reach out to, figure out shit, and coach 2 associates. My superior is emailing me and pinging me at 5am. I'm not sure if this is normal or if this is because I'm assigned to the biggest client in the FS sector? I expected it to be a shitshow but I'm questioning if this is all worth it. I knew what I was getting into, but I didn't even expect it to be this bad. Possibly going to have to work 100 + hrs a week. It seems like I have to stay on top of everything and wrap up EGAs as soon as possible. Document everything right away when support comes in and follow up/call with each clients (30x every week lol). Not sure if this is because I got partially at next level on my 1st snap shot and so they're fine with dumping work on me, but I don't know how I can get through this. Any advice from b4 veterans? Posted: 05 Jan 2022 09:26 AM PST Hey, I'm on the verge of breaking up with my girlfriend of almost 2 years because of how much I work. I'm a first-year, and obviously, I haven't even really hit busy season hours yet. But, she insists that I never want to hang out or do anything anymore because I am always tired from working or I'm always working. On top of all this, she insults my job. says things like "all you do is walk downstairs" (WFH reference) or "wow, you're so important!!" (being busy). I did a good job setting the expectation for PA and told her how it's only going to get worse. I kinda just want to break up. This job is already stressful sometimes. I don't need the stress of an unsupportive girlfriend. Has anyone had a similar experience? I think dropping her is the best move personally. But obviously, I don't wanna do that. Maybe someone has worked something out? Thanks! [link] [comments]
Posted: 05 Jan 2022 03:14 PM PST I told him that doesn't look good on the company that you are so short staffed that your employees have to work that much. He responded quite annoyed that they WANT to work those hours because they want to impress us and have good work ethic. I was speechless. Stop glorifying the big 4! [link] [comments]
Switched from public accounting to data science. 3x pay bump, much better WLB, and respect/impact!!! Posted: 05 Jan 2022 03:01 PM PST It's the time of the year again huh. I just wanna share my story or those who think you are suffering but still debate on leaving or not. I went straight into public accounting at one of big four after undergrad. I majored in accounting because I got no interest, so my parents told me it's "safe" card. Like many international students out there, we daydreamed about working at the internationally prestigious big four accounting firms since freshman year. No words can describe how excited I was when I got the internship offer call from the partner who interviewed me. Internship was great. Orlando was amazing. I quickly signed my return offer and picked the earliest start date. But things just got really really awful. Totally not what I expected and very different from what they tried to show us during internship. Got assigned to the worst engagement, hours were horrible, pay was shit. But what made me push the button to jump out was after so much tears and blood, you still realize you added 0 value to you, your family, society and even your client. They couldn't care less about our work. And partners just slapped your face and cramming with "learning curve" and "things will get better" nonsense. I spent my last year hustling in data analytics/science field. Can't say it's the best job in the world but just much better than accounting. Got 3x pay bump and you can see your work add "real value" to the company, and people really respect and value you. The switch process wasn't an easy one. A lot of struggling, self-questioning. But if you can survive busy season, you can survive anything. And you deserve better! [link] [comments]

Posted: 05 Jan 2022 06:22 AM PST Are you guys working in person? My firm is making us come fully in person. On Monday they said "Hopefully we all get covid early in busy season so we won't be sick when the deadlines start coming up." Wtf?? I've been mostly remote since I started in Aug 2021. It feels like I'm having one of my benefits taken away because I'm now expected to be in the office for 10-12 hours a day. I really want to do 2 years or at the very least get thru the busy season, but I cannot get over what they said to us about hoping we get covid… Do you guys have any input/advice? Posted: 05 Jan 2022 09:48 AM PST Studies have shown that productivity falls after working 30 hours a week. Even 40 hours a week, which Americans think of as "normal", begins to take a noticeable toll on people's well being. Yet I see so many accountants put up with 50, 60, and longer hours in public. There's this "it's just how it is" mentality. Why? Why are so many accountants behavioral masochists? Why do you put up with horrendous hours months on end? Why are so many of you willing to throw away your personal lives and slave away day after day? You're signing up for sweatshops. Complacency is why PA firms can work is to death. Because we put up with it. Because we sign up for their jobs despite what they entail. PA needs a mass exodus. The partners need to finally learn to treat their employees like human beings. And that will never happen if we keep tolerating labor abuse. Rant over. [link] [comments]

Posted: 05 Jan 2022 07:29 PM PST I don't know why I'm posting this. I guess I just have no one else to talk to and need to get this out. I left B4 audit in late 2020 after two busy seasons because of a full blown mental breakdown. Constant suicidal ideation and deep depression/anxiety issues led me to many months of alcoholism and substance abuse. I was simply unable to continue living my life in this manner, so I decided to quit. I've since been working on getting my life together over the past year. I've worked diligently to complete my CPA exams (was not in a mental state to do so while at B4) and am now beginning to interview for positions. I feel like my gap in employment is a red flag for the places I interview at, and I don't feel comfortable revealing the true reason I left my previous position with nothing lined up. I guess I'm just coping with the harsh reality of potentially having to start from square 1. I'm incredibly stressed thinking that I've wasted the early years of my career destroying my mental and physical health only to have to start over again, or settle for something I don't truly want to pursue. I've worked so hard at the expense of myself, and I know I'm more than capable of performing at a high level, but this hiccup in my life feels too significant to just pick up where I left off. It doesn't help that every day I'm reading some headline about how amazing the job market is right now. Not sure if anyone will be able to relate to this, but if you have experienced anything similar, I could really use some advice on how you got back on track with your career. [link] [comments]
Posted: 05 Jan 2022 02:38 PM PST I had a dream last night that I got fired. It was honestly the best dream I have had in awhile. Then I woke up disappointed and went to another 6am meeting with my India client 😑. [link] [comments]
