Left Public Accounting after 2.5 days for Industry Role.

    Posted: 19 Jan 2022 08:15 PM PST

I'm not even joking. I took my first ever accounting job at a smaller firm. I worked two days and got an unexpected job offer in industry. I accepted it and promptly walked straight into the partner's office and quit. He wasn't happy.

The industry role offered a better salary, far less hours, and offered to pay for a masters and my CPA costs.

Two days was enough time to realize that PA was going to suck major cock. I can't justify working more hours for a lower salary, even if it would be "good experience." I'm happy with my decision.

Fired after 2 months at Big 4

    Posted: 19 Jan 2022 08:14 PM PST

All I had to say for myself is that I'm new here. I started late in November and felt I was picking up the tasks given to me quickly. 3 weeks into busy season and I'm tasked with ordering dinner for our team. I take everyone's order, but forget the order of our team's partner…. I was warned that this had caused issues for others in the past, but I thought there would be some forgiveness. The partner filed my two weeks for me, but assured me that I would be allowed to work until filing day. However she added that paychecks and benefits will be suspended effective immediately. Do I go back in tomorrow even tho I'm not getting paid or what? I still wanna show that I'm dedicated to the firm. Any advice will help. God bless!

Don’t feel bad if you don’t have a CPA, masters, or other certs.

    Posted: 19 Jan 2022 04:50 PM PST

I just wanted to say that you can still be successful and have a good life with good earning potential.

This subreddit seems to have a lot of CPAs and public accountants, but there is entire world outside of that. So keep your head up and don't worry about comparing yourself to others.

I'm a prime example. A "late bloomer". I started taking accounting courses in my late 20s. Now in my mid thirties with my AS in accounting, I am halfway through my BS and making 70k as a remote staff accountant in a private business in a lcol area.

If you are behind with degrees especially, I highly recommend becoming a master of excel, learning power query, and learning Microsoft power bi. These three tools are free or very cheap. They will make you far more valuable than an accountant with even a couple more years of experience than you. Data / Adhoc report creation are huge pain points for every business nowadays and HOT ticket items for recruiting.

So stay strong and know that getting a CPA and hating your life in public a few months out of the year is not the only route.

How long can I make it in B4 without getting fired?

    Posted: 19 Jan 2022 02:19 PM PST

Yeah so this work is pretty boring but the pay is decent. It's busy season but I'm not really into working 20+ hours of overtime every week and not being compensated for it. I'm considering just going on vacation and dragging my feet on my engagements, ya know, logging in here and there to do some stuff—but definitely not putting in more than 50 or so hours a week. I figure I'll just let the team stress out about the deadlines while I relax on a beach in Greece.

How long do you think I can make it, slacking off in the middle of busy season, before I get fired?

College professors obsession w B4 and Audit?

    Posted: 19 Jan 2022 01:21 PM PST

Hello, I am a junior in college majoring in accounting. I have noticed a trend in the way my professors promote working for a Big 4. Additionally, they'll say don't go into Tax or anything else besides Audit. I don't understand why they're so persistent on this? Hopefully someone can explain

I'm on big 4 and mental health is sinking badly.

    Posted: 20 Jan 2022 03:29 AM PST

I'm hired December 2021.... Until now I feel anxious opening my laptop. I'm afraid getting emails and MS Teams when it pop out. I still have the option to quit since I don't have the bond yet (bond = people who take training, if you render one year in the firm you will pay them php 30,000).

Every morning, afternoon and evening I'll cry or having massive mental breakdown. I hate myself for having that.

Even when I'm sick I still do the work. I have to work 8 am to 1 am, I know it may sound still early for some.

The things is I'm having suicidal thoughts when working. I can't bring to shame to my family I can't work here anymore. It's only been a month but I'm already failing on my tasks.

I want to quit but no company wants me that's why I'm here in the Big4. They are the only one who accept me......

I'm not skilled or licensed accountant, finding a job is more difficult.

I'm severe depress and I don't know what to do.

Please help. I'm begging you guys

Thank you and sorry for this post.

    Interesting story….

    Posted: 19 Jan 2022 09:05 PM PST

When I was taking a fraud class in college, one of the sample questions in the back of the book gave a scenario (it was worded in a way that made it sound like it was a real case) about how a manager at ABC jewelry store (it actually used the name of a real jewelry store that was local to where I lived) committed fraud and listed out a bunch of details. Well, the interesting part is that my neighbor at the time was actually the manager at ABC Jewelry Store. When I asked him about it and whether or not there were any other managers he confirmed that he was the only manager and had been there during the time that the scenario in the book took place.

My neighbor ended up suing the company that published the book and got them to remove it from the book.

Current IRS Revenue Agents - looking for advice

    Posted: 19 Jan 2022 04:54 PM PST

Hi, I started as an RA Nov 2021 with the recent hiring surge. I'm in SBSE and I have my first interview coming up next week. I'm struggling with the work a bit and always have a ton of questions. Today my group manager said that "some new hires needed direction at work and it became a problem (speaking generally)." This was a really discouraging statement and now I feel I'm unwelcome to ask my OJI/manager questions. Though important to note I go to my OJI/other RAs 90% of the time.

I'm still on training cases, in pre audit, and my first interview is soon. I think my problem right now is I never know where I should be with my cases - I.e. steps to take on time. what I should ask my TP for my first interview. I also don't know how to analyze pre audit materials. how am I supposed to use it to help me in my interviews.

Just looking for some general guidance from any current RAs. I'm coming from b4 audit which was an awful job but I did get used to getting assigned tasks "a, b and c." Sorry for the word salad.

It's entirely possible I'm over complicating things, but I'd really like this job to work out and for me to contribute in a meaningful way.

Help finding Joe Rogan first day audit staff meme ?

    Posted: 19 Jan 2022 04:50 PM PST

A few weeks ago, someone posted a clip from Joe Rogan's podcast with a caption like "first day audit staff talking to first week audit staff." It was fucking hilarious and I can't find it on the sub. Anyone got a link?

3 months in, 1st busy season

    Posted: 19 Jan 2022 07:46 PM PST

I'm 3 months into my job, entering my first busy season and I've got a question for you all. Do you guys bill washroom time or coffee time to clients? Lol I know it's only a small amount of time but all this little stuff adds up in the day so it's a serious question.

New intern. Asked to take 2 days off to study and was approved but asked if I wanted to make up the hours. Am I obliged to say yes?

    Posted: 19 Jan 2022 11:01 PM PST

Unfortunately my schedule doesn't really have much room for it.

I'm only allowed to work 20 hours a week due to my school schedule running from 9-5 on multiple days.

I wasn't sure if I was passively-aggressively forced to say yes, but I can only make up 1 day, not 2 days.

    Posted: 20 Jan 2022 02:05 AM PST

Few days I was accepted for a job as a fresh internal auditor in one of the biggest financial/accounting consultancy and services firms in my country, I don't really have a lot of experience as I worked for a year in tourism company before corona hit and the firm closed, so my question is what should my strategy to be the best I could and learn as much as i possible in the least time possible to prove that i am qualified to the job ?
