Car insurance denying my claim because address is wrong Posted: 07 Dec 2021 06:41 AM PST Recently moved to a new apartment. I called to update my address using a welcome document from my landlord- zip code was incorrect by one digit. I remember the insurance rep wanting to clarify the correct zip code because it was showing the actual one when he entered it and I clearly remember saying "please go with (correct) zip code then." I guess he entered the incorrect one that I pulled from my landlord's document. Note the welcome document is not the lease, the lease has the actual zip code. So I got in an accident about a week later and my car was totaled. I owe $20,000 on it still. They are trying to FedEx me the title release and FedEx won't deliver because the zip code is wrong. I call them to update the zip code with FedEx and they now tell me my insurance is void because my address was incorrect at time of accident. Wtf do I do?! [link] [comments] |
So behind. So much student debt. Would love some eyes on my financials if you have a moment Posted: 07 Dec 2021 08:55 AM PST Hey all, I would love some advice in attacking my student loans. I feel so unbelievably behind on getting started in even basic savings, but I figured better late than never. Here's my info: Age: 29 Income: $108k (this is a very recent change, up from about $65k) 401k: $35k, currently only contributing to my employer match of 5%, planning to max out when student debt is gone Roth IRA: nothing - planning to open and max out when student debt is gone Emergency savings: $13k (a small chunk of this will need to go to taxes for a contracting job I had for a few months this year) High yield savings account with SO: $3k (just opened this a few weeks ago) Monthly expenses: $1700 (rent, bills, groceries, etc.) I will basically have ~$4k a month to put towards loans and savings Ugh, onto the student loans: Private
Federal
My original plan was to knock out the private loans first in case there is any chance of public loan forgiveness (unlikely, I know). But now I'm wondering if:

Always check your EOB against what you paid a medical office/provider. Posted: 07 Dec 2021 09:54 AM PST Even if you don't get a bill in the mail, make sure you check your EOB from visits to a medical provider you pay a co-pay to at the time of service. Sometimes your patient responsibility is actually less than the co-pay collected and you are owed a credit by the medical office. I'm currently waiting on a ~$70 refund of over payments across 2 visits to a doctor after the EOB showed the co-pay I paid that day was more than the agreed cost between the provider and insurance co. In my state medical providers have 90 days to contact you regarding an overpayment, and 30 days to refund you the credit after you request a refund. If I hadn't called them I don't know how long they would have held onto my money, they happily collected my full co-pay on my second visit (my actual responsibility for the second visit was nearly half the co-payment they collected) even though I had a credit balance with them from the previous visit. I owe $32,000 in margin that I don't have (help). Posted: 06 Dec 2021 12:46 PM PST So last year while bored and depressed at home I got into stock trading. I bought a bunch of stocks that a big Youtuber was talking about that he said would go up a lot. SUNW, DKNG, EVGO, SOS, IPOD, IPOF, etc. I was making a good amount of money, but didn't realize we were in a huge bull run. Well March this year I hit a heavy depression and I stepped away from all my positions for the rest of the year pretty much, and things that were supposed to be short term or day trades, turned into investments, and I'm currently down 60+ % on everything and owe $32,000 in margin according to the broker. I don't have that much money and have no idea what to do. They said I need to pay like $1,000 right now in order for them to not close all the positions, but the number literally goes up $100 every couple minutes. I know it's hilarious and I see the humor in it as well, how I spent my whole life working so hard, just to be an idiot and get myself into something that I had no knowledge on, and suddenly my entire life savings and more is gone, but if there's anyone out there kind enough to help or let me know what kind of professional I need to contact in order to get help, that would be great too. Again, I 100% deserve whatever is coming to me, I agree, but if anyone has spare time to help an idiot like me out, I would really really appreciate it. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 07 Dec 2021 06:58 AM PST Like the title says I am receiving a tax free "gift" if you will of $20,000. I am middle aged and considering putting it all away towards retirement. Looking for a few suggestions before I talk to a financial advisor to gain some background info. Currently I have a pension and annuity through work. Another option is that I will be moving in less than a year and considering using it towards the downpayment of the new house. My current house is worth $80k above what I paid for it 7 years ago so may not need it towards a downpayment as any profit from the current house will roll into the new one. Thanks in advance. How does capital gains tax work on long term holdings? Posted: 07 Dec 2021 06:25 AM PST Say for example I put $100,000 into some managed portfolio buying ETFs, and I invested an additional $10,000 every year for 20 years. At the end of the life I have a total of 300,000 invested and say I earned 700,000 so there's now 1 million in the account. 2 questions:

Is it a bad idea to sell our extra house after getting married rather than renting it out? Posted: 07 Dec 2021 10:34 AM PST When my husband and I met, we both owned our own home. He moved in with me a couple years ago, and we rented his house out via a property management company. The tenants he originally got are leaving, and if we wanted to sell it would be the prime time to do so since he lived in it for 2 of the past 5 years still. But we're also looking to retire early, and the idea of passive income is very attractive to me. Here's some specific info about it:
Is it a bad idea to sell the home rather than continue to rent it out? Especially if we're talking about potentially retiring early? It's his home and I told him he can do what he wants with it, but I want to be sure we're not making a mistake in selling it rather than keeping it as a rental property. Edit: Thank you everyone for your comments! It makes me feel much better about deciding to sell the place rather than trying to keep it for an investment property. [link] [comments] |
My mom wants me to buy a house when im 18 and her be the cosigner Posted: 07 Dec 2021 12:16 PM PST Hello, I am 15 years old at the moment just to make that clear,me and my mom had a little talk with me about how she wanted me to loan a house when im 18 and her be the co-signer. She said i would have to pay to live in it and she would pay too. I know this might be a weird question, but is this some kind of trap? Im kinda clueless on how it works, maybe she can take the house when we pay off the house or something. Can anyone provide me with some information about this? Is it good/bad? Because i dont wanna get my self into something like this. [link] [comments] |
Pension saving in the Uk but might retire in America. Posted: 07 Dec 2021 09:36 AM PST A little background I am A dual citizen (US/UK) living and working in London. I haven't been contributing to my pension in the UK because i needed the money and I didn't know how long I would live here. Now it looks like it might be a good idea to have a pension contribution in the UK. However I might retire in the USA. Is there anything I need to consider with regards to tax if I collect on this pension and am living in the US? [link] [comments] |
Withdrawing from grad program and will owe them money Posted: 07 Dec 2021 10:06 AM PST I'm withdrawing from a graduate program and also resigning from my connected job due to severe long term Covid symptoms that make it impossible to work and study such in such a demanding field. I know it's a financial impact, but my health is worth more that this IMO. My (soon to be former) employer paid for my tuition for the graduate program, but when I resign, I'll owe about $3k in tuition to the grad school because I didn't complete my full time with my employer. I do not have that entire $3k, but I've tightened up my budget to just the bare minimum and can realistically pay that off over the course of around 5-6 months (I'm starting a new, far less demanding job soon). Do grad schools offer payment plans for instances like this? The school's financial website isn't super clear and although I have an appointment with the finance office soon, it's not for a few days and I'd like to have an idea of what I'm getting myself into. My biggest question is: if the school doesn't offer a payment plan, what are my options? Could I take out a student loan to pay that $3k up front, then pay off the student loan over a few months? I have a good credit score (high 700s), if that would impact anything. Thank you so much for your help! This is a crappy situation all around and I just want to be as well-informed on my options as possible. [link] [comments] |
Chase vs. Wells Fargo mortgage for almost same terms? Posted: 07 Dec 2021 11:46 AM PST I am purchasing a house for 1.8 mill and want to put down the minimum 20%. I was already approved by Wells for a 1.8m house with 700K down and a 2.75 rate. Since then, a few colleagues recommended i put the minimum 20% down and invest the rest. A small lender offered the same rate of 2.75% when reducing my down payment to 400K. Both Chase and Wells are matching the small lender's rate of 2.75 for me with 400K down. Is it just a matter of who I like working with now? Since I am forgoing escrow and doing self payment for tax and insurance, wouldn't the closing costs be relatively the same? The only difference is the recasting terms, which I hope not to use but it's nice to have. - Wells Fargo said they have no fees, minimum 20K and unlimited times. They said they write that into the contract so that if the loan is sold, the new lender has to honor those terms. - Chase said they have no recasting fees, 1x per year limit, and no minimum amount. However, they said they don't write that into the mortgage since it's a Chase feature but they told me they usually do not sell jumbo loans. They told me a similar thing about closing costs as well and their estimate is around the same as WF. I am not sure which do I go with. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 07 Dec 2021 10:57 AM PST I am employed with a company in Ohio that offers vacation time. In July I asked my boss if I could just take a pay out for my remaining 44 hours of vacation time instead of taking the time off this year. He said he would get back with me. On October 1st at a company wide meeting they said they would be reducing the amount of vacation payout by some amount and will send info out about it. Today December 7th, they finally sent out an email that said they are going to reduce the payout by 35% of my salary. So if I were owed $1,000, the payout would be reduced to $650. I was not expecting that large of a cut, I was guessing maybe 10-15% that I could tolerate. My question, is this even legal? All the laws I am reading online say once they have promised you vacation time, they owe you the pay you have earned. It all seems very sketchy and feel like I am being disrespected and nickel and dimed. I have been with this company for 8 years as well, and this policy only went into affect after I asked about a payout. [link] [comments] |
My credit score dropped and I have no idea why. How do I find out? Posted: 07 Dec 2021 09:28 AM PST Short story: credit score dropped 45 points, nothing is appearing on my credit report, everything is paid on time, no collections, no new balances or debts. I can't figure out what has happened. Is there some way I can find out? [link] [comments] |
25% Return on Indexed Universal Life Posted: 07 Dec 2021 08:27 AM PST Totally lost here: A friend recommended me a "retirement/financial advisor," who turned out to be an indexed universal life salesperson once I met them. I brought many of the concerns I've read about IUL to my friend as I was not comfortable in participating in it, and they say they've been making a 25% return on their money for the last three Couple things:
I'm trying to understand this better because my red flags started popping up when the "advisor" denounced 401k, Roth IRAs, index funds, etc. and went straight to how magical and wonderful the IUL is. Thank you. [link] [comments] |
Mortgage company posted a late payment to credit bureau after setting me up for a payment plan Posted: 07 Dec 2021 08:24 AM PST Title. I live in Louisiana and was recently affected by Hurricane Ida. I was out of work for 3 weeks due to this, and was unable to make a payment towards my mortgage. After finally being able to get in touch with the company(out of state company btw), we agreed upon a payment plan of 3 months to pay this one month off, on top of my usual monthly payments. Last week, I noticed my credit score tanked almost 200 points, and after investigating, I found out that the month after the hurricane was reported as a late payment. After calling and talking to my mortgage company, i was told that payment plan or no, this was considered a missed payment and there is nothing they can do about it. Now, if I have to eat this and build up my credit again, I will, but 200 points will take me a while. Is there anything else I can do at this point? Does being in a disaster area at the time matter if my company is out of state? [link] [comments] |
Need help with my father's dwindling finances Posted: 07 Dec 2021 11:41 AM PST Hi all, I'm wondering what is the best way to help my elderly dad put the little money he has left to better use. Long story short: I (34) recently became aware of my father's (75) financial situation and offered to help. I always thought he had quite a nest egg built up, but apparently he pulled everything out in '08 and now has only $32,000 left to his name. It is just sitting in his checkings account! Luckily he gets $3196 per month from SS and spousal support. After monthly expenses (~$400) and rent ($1734), I calculate he can have $500 left over for savings and $400 for play money. In 5 years this would be 30k even before interest, thus doubling his savings. His physical health is good, though he the doctor says he probably has senile dementia. In his 80s he may need assisted living and I want to get a nest egg prepared for that. He has no income from a job, so I can't open any kind of IRA for him. Is the best option then to throw maybe 70% of his 32k into a Vanguard? A safe portfolio, maybe 50/50 stocks/bonds? Has anyone had an experience like this? What are some tax or brokerage things I could take advantage of? Sincerely, Frusterated [link] [comments] |
Posted: 07 Dec 2021 08:44 AM PST Sweet and simple, my girlfriend makes $20.00/h, she recently applied to a federal position (GS6, step 1) doing the same work but they offered her $19.75. She tentatively accepted and asked if they could wiggle the extra $0.25. They said they'd email her today with the $19.75 and to include a pay stub to negotiate. She has yet to get an email. Now she's worried they've taken offense to this and may rescind the offer. Try as I might to calm her down she keeps worrying. My argument is even if they have ghosted her over a quarter it's probably a sign they're no good to work for. Anyone you experience or insight? [link] [comments] |
Fraud checks continue to be taken out of my closed account. Posted: 07 Dec 2021 06:11 AM PST Hello. I had a bank account in which someone copied one of my checks. The checks are being sent out to "secret shoppers" and then cashed. The checks have my account number on them and look almost identical to mine. The checks clear from the "secret shoppers" and the money gets taken out of my account, and I file fraudulent purchases and the money has been restored. The bank told me the only way to fix this was to close my account and open a new one, so I did. Today there was another fraudulent check that was cashed and the money was taken out of my NEW account, even though the fraud checks have my OLD account number on them (I can see the pic on my app). I talked to the banking manager and she said she didn't know how this happened. I feel this was a huge mistake and I need to escalate it. Any advice on what I should do? [link] [comments] |
Have some questions about bankruptcy and my situation Posted: 07 Dec 2021 08:49 AM PST I have received a subpoena for a credit card i maxed out and never paid back. Maxed it out and paid it off once and got a credit increase. Maxed it out a little before the end of 2019 and was unemployed from mid 2019 until March of 2020. Have been overwhelmed trying to just paymy bills and keep a job. I feel like I've ruined my life and the total debt is just under five thousand dollars. I'm finally just now making good money and have insurance and getting treatment for adhd and anxiety which i feel contributed to my bad budget habits. Should i declare bankruptcy or what? I'm not sure i can make the minimum payments but i don't want to fuck up my life over 5k. Any other options i should look into? What should i do in the next 30 days? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 07 Dec 2021 12:32 PM PST Hello everyone, I live in the State of Texas. On September 2019, I visited a emergency care center because I sat on the corner of a pane of glass and put a hole in my butt cheek that required staples. While I was there, I gave them all my information including my health insurance information. In November I received a bill from what I now know is the facilities I was at. My insurance paid and I also paid whatever sum out of pocket. Fast forward to last week, I check my credit report and I see that I'm in collections for $1309. Did some digging and found out it was the "physicians group" from the emergency care center I was at. The problem is, they never attempted to bill my insurance. My insurance company has no history of ever receiving anything from this physicians group, only the facilities I visited. I have a 100% on time payment history and almost an 800 credit score, so naturally this is incredibly frustrating to me. My insurance company said they wouldn't pay out the bill because they waited so long to submit it. Texas has a state law (SB 1264 86th legislator) that went into effect on September 1, 2019 that states if the care facility does not bill by the 1st of the 11th month after the date of service, that the facility can no longer bill your insurance or go after you if they miss this deadline. To me, this means the collections account on my credit report has illegally been placed there and they are illegally trying to collect a debt. Obviously a debt validation letter would be in order, but should I include language from the SB 1264 bill in this letter? Is there a state agency I can file a complaint with? [link] [comments] |
How to decide on a fair price to rent a room out of my house? Posted: 07 Dec 2021 08:46 AM PST Hey, I have a good friend who is living with me in a house that I own. Originally, he was supposed to stay for just a few months so I gave him a really good deal on a room. That turned into two rooms so he can use one as an office. Now it's been about a year and a half and I feel that a fair increase in rent price is due. I'm charging $250 total for both rooms that are being rented plus half of all utilities paid. I'm having a difficult time figuring out what a fair price to charge for both rooms combined would be. He's very reliable and a pretty good tenant as well as a good friend, so I'm definitely going to charge a little less than what the average in the OKC metro would be, but I can't find much reliable info online about what that would even be. Any advice? [link] [comments] |
