Experience with Gusto for payroll? Guideline for 401k?

    Posted: 17 Dec 2021 09:04 AM PST

I have a small (9-person) advertising agency. We've been through a couple payroll providers and haven't really had a good experience yet. Not having dedicated HR personnel, we need something easy and intuitive. Though I've only needed to contact customer service a couple times per year with our current provider, I do want to feel assured that customer service is readily accessible and competent (chances are, if I'm need support re: payroll/taxes, it's timely and important).

I've tinkered with Gusto's demo, and it seems to offer all the features we need in a clean, intuitive UX.

We may soon look for a new retirement plan provider as well. Guideline's 401k (low) fees and offerings feel like a good fit for a company of our size. And the two seem to play well together.

So I guess my questions are, for anyone who has experience with either company or both:

    1. On a scale from 1 to 10 (10=best), how happy are you with Gusto? Guideline?
    2. Same question, but specifically pertaining to the availability and capability of their customer service depts.?
    3. What do you like most about either service? Least?
    4. Do Gusto/Guideline sync as seamlessly as advertised? Currently, pull monthly reports and manually deposit funds into employees' Simple IRAs. Are the deductions and deposits between Gusto/Guideline really on autopilot once they're set up?
    5. If you'd caution me against using one or both services, what's the biggest reason, and what alternative do you recommend?

Just to emphasize, we are not payroll/HR experts. So we are looking for something EASY and reliable. High priority features are: payroll administration, PTO tracking, automated onboarding process, compliance features (e.g. employee handbook).

Also impressed with JustWorks, but the cost is quite a bit higher, I don't love that we'd be forced to use their Workers Comp insurance, and we don't need to switch health insurance providers at the moment, which seems like the key differentiator between them and Gusto (even though they have a basic plan without benefits). And we looked into ADP. Not as enamored with their offerings—or at least what you get for the $.

Thanks so much for your input. Switching payroll providers is a PITA, and after this, I hope to avoid doing it again anytime soon.

Dealing with customers claiming stuff is missing

    Posted: 17 Dec 2021 08:45 AM PST

Ive been having a problem with customers claiming things are missing from their packages, when we are 99% certain it's not possible.

For a while, this was happening and we chalked it up to human error. A few times, we found that we did in fact forget to include something for one reason or another. Usually because our orders consist of many small items.

Because of this we started a system where 2 different people will pack an order and both will individually check off an item.

Now, we still have people messaging saying an item is missing. I go back and sure enough it's double checked off. But I'm not going to call the customer a liar and lose their business so we usually just eat it anyways. I feel like people know this and take advantage because of it.

For reference, we are business to business selling supplies and rely largely on repeat customers.

What am I to do in this situation? I suggested taking pictures of the orders before packing but with the volume it's just not realistic.

How can I stop or combat this? Any insight is really appreciated.

    Thank you

As a consumer, does having a slightly different domain for an online store affect your trust and perception of the store?

    Posted: 17 Dec 2021 09:19 AM PST

Hey all I'm a dev that makes ecommerce sites. I focus on making them lightning fast and high quality. My websites without my store have 1 second load times and with my store 3 second load times.

One of my solutions was to have a different domain (not a subdomain) that's similar something like yourbusiness.com as the main site and the store hosted at yourbusiness-store.com in order to prevent the store from making yourbusiness.com slower.

If you ran into this when looking at an online store, would you care? Would it make you trust it less since it isn't yourbusiness.com /store? Thanks for any input!!

What’s your experience with small loans?

    Posted: 17 Dec 2021 07:41 AM PST

Looking to start a small business in NY with about $20k in startup costs/equipment. I've looked into financing through vendors supplying me with the equipment and they all seem to have interest rates that float around 7%. Do you guys find banks/SBA loans will have better rates for a brand new business that hasn't even opened its doors yet? I have excellent credit and a successful history within the industry, if that helps. Any suggestions are welcome!

    Advertising without social media

    Posted: 17 Dec 2021 09:50 AM PST

    Hiiii

I'm a photographer. The 4.5 years I've been in business, I've gotten about 90% of bookings thru Facebook.

Recently, fb is giving me major issues. My acct is restricted for a long time at the moment, giving me no access to advertise on my business pages.

I know it's fully my fault for depending so much on one platform... But does anyone have any suggestions? I have a website, email list, etc.. But it's not attracting new clients. I just got off leave from surgery recovery. I'm ready to work again and I'm feeling messy and depressy about it 🙃

Where else can I advertise with good results? I mainly shoot Boudoir & Body Empowerment Portraits.

    Helppp

Starting Beverage Business - Need Insight

    Posted: 17 Dec 2021 09:52 AM PST

    Hello,

I am starting a small beverage company, and want to slowly grow the business. Currently, I am operating out of my apartment bedroom, this isn't sustainable. My apartment bedroom lacks space and is not efficient for shipping.

How do small businesses start with no industrial space? I don't need a big space, 800sf is sufficient. However, I am unable to find any industrial space this size, and anything bigger is completely unaffordable. Any tips, or advice is greatly appreciated.

When a client shows you a prior vendors invoice... What would you do?

    Posted: 17 Dec 2021 11:57 AM PST

Recently was booking a high end project for a regular client of mine. I do 95% of their work in my niche, the other 5% is legacy work that different vendors handle due to different relationships within the firm. So this project came to me because the old vendor disappeared(common after covid.) After a call about the project, but before any pricing was discussed, they sent my the prior vendors invoice from the same project in 2019.

For one part of the project the pricing was double what I would have quoted, for another part it was about 5x, though not itemized.

How I handled it was to be a bit more wordy than normal in my estimate. For part one I priced it about 75% higher than normal knowing that it was a much higher end project(and thus, less room for error) and also raised my prices for rush work a bit(and delivered VERY quickly.)

For part two, which was the deliverables, I broke down the prior invoice to see more or less what they paid per piece(old vendor just listed everything and put a lump sum, not itemized) and I quoted them the average cost from that(my COGs is VERY low).

I was up front with the pricing and they were happy with my numbers. In the end, what would have normally been a $5000 project for my company ended up grossing us $20,000 and we knocked the project out of the park, I expect to get called back for it annually.

How would you have handled this?

What Are The Biggest Challenges Small Businesses Face With Marketing?

    Posted: 17 Dec 2021 11:16 AM PST

So I work in the SEO industry which tends to put me in line with many small business owners, and rather than just throw SEO in people's faces I wanted to really grasp what problems small business owners face and talk it through with them. I ended up putting a post out in some business group on Facebook saying that I would help any small business owner by giving them three things they can do today 100% free to fix their website if they could tell me some problems their businesses face as far as marketing goes and I was met with zero response. So I figured the next best thing would be to hop on Reddit and ask you guys what are some of the biggest challenges your small businesses face as far as marketing goes? It doesn't have to be digital, but I just wanted to hear some problems the average small business owner of today faces.

    Partner meeting?

    Posted: 17 Dec 2021 11:01 AM PST

I sent my business partner (let's call him Josh) a meeting request for today to call it quits with the potential cofounder I've been working with today. (On the advice of someone on this subreddit, I want to end the relationship before what would have been our meeting with a third potential cofounder this Sunday.)

    Josh "denied" the calendar request.

    Now what do I do?

I don't like the idea of "breaking up via text." Even if it makes immediate, practical sense, it seems like a bad idea. Perhaps among other reasons, it looks bad and people love to parade that sort of thing around as "Hey check out how unprofessional this person/business is!"

Perhaps I should just cancel the other meeting for this Sunday? Or reschedule?

At this point, I don't trust Josh I suspect he just wants to steal my other potential cofounder, or at least talk him out of working with me. My reasoning for this is that Josh hasn't contributed any work product—at all. He just complains about the amount of work required to ship our product. It feels like he just wants a free ride. So I suspect he just wants me to introduce him to other people without doing the work of hustling to meet people on his own.

Question for Owners - Trying to Determine Potential Demand for Consulting Services

    Posted: 17 Dec 2021 10:42 AM PST

    Hi All,

I'm considering providing consulting services for my region (major metro with suburbs) on local incentive programming where I would advise on existing programming and act as a representative for assistance-seekers to local governments. Most of these programs are retail-oriented or restaurant-oriented. I have imagined that my clients would largely come from small business that are new, relocating or expanding businesses that are in the process of identifying a location.

Do you think there is potential demand for these services and would you be interested in recommending/utilizing them?

Context is that I have expertise in public incentives and incentive agreement negotiation and am trying to find a way to put this knowledge to use.

Thanks for your thoughts and help!

Guide on creating a small business? Things to think about?

    Posted: 17 Dec 2021 09:18 AM PST

My husband and I are interested in starting a small business (3D printing and IOT stuff). We obviously will have a lot of costs related to this (the 3D printers, filament/resin etc).

We need a business license I'm sure, but I expect we need to track expenses for tax purposes?
