How are people with two years of work experience have the title senior accountant?

    Posted: 25 Dec 2021 08:01 PM PST

I see people that have only graduated two years ago with this title. Two years seem very short relative to an average person's entire career length. Is it because accountants can learn everything they need to know/might encounter in a short period of time? Genuinely curious.

Any way to get into FP&A out of school?

    Posted: 26 Dec 2021 12:04 AM PST

    Hey all,

I don't go to a target school and my GPA is okay. I'm a solidly mediocre student. I'm under no illusions that my best shot after I graduate is probably with a mid-size or regional CPA firm.

However, in my day job, I work for a distributor managing pricing contracts. There's a lot of excel work and some data analysis that goes into this, (mostly lookups and pivot tables to track costs changes, sales, etc) and I've helped automate a lot of our processes so they don't take quite as long.

All in all, it's the coolest job I've ever had and, from what I can tell, FP&A seems conceptually similar. This, combined with the pay, makes it a super attractive career path and I really want to know more about what skills I should be cultivating and developing so I can snag one of these jobs. Is it possible to get one after I graduate? I'll have about a year in my current role when I graduate, plus about 5+ years of experience in less-relevant roles before that.

Appreciate anything you can point me at. Thanks!

    GAAP

    Posted: 25 Dec 2021 05:02 PM PST

I have been wanting to get a deeper understanding on GAAP; I was thinking on going over WILEY's Practitioner's Guide to GAAP, but was wondering if anyone found more efficient/better materials.

    Exit opportunities into IT

    Posted: 25 Dec 2021 05:39 PM PST

    Hi bean counters,

I'm an experienced senior and licensed CPA, at one of the Big4 in west coast Canada. I've just started my 5th year as a senior, rated average for the past few years in a row though I received excellent reviews from managers. It's just that I'm not social enough for partners to back me.

Anyways, I'm looking at industry positions and have given a few interviews but nothing excites me about accounting anymore. I love coding and IT, have working knowledge of Python and currently learning SQL in Christmas holidays through Udemy.

What are some of the exit opportunities I should look at and whether anyone has successfully made such a jump? Would love to hear some advice and success stories.

Busy season is coming up which will suck up any free time I have to study this course. Only holding onto it because it pays the bills.

    Help me get out please.

    Advice

    Posted: 25 Dec 2021 05:56 PM PST

So I'm going a firm after graduation that's around the ranks of 30-40. Perks include -58k salary -20 PTO for the year Internship went okay but personally I think the firm lacks the idea that the industry is changing atm. Like WFH. At the end of my internship in April they were "transitioning to get rid of WFM". Would you guys stay at this firm? I'm considering applying to other places but want to see what you guys think / compared to other firms.

    (CA) CPA PREP Difficulty

    Posted: 25 Dec 2021 06:10 PM PST

I am currently completing my undergrad in Accounting and received grades for two courses that were above 50% but below the CPA pass level (60%). I am debating completing these courses through CPA PREP for my second try at these courses. I was wondering if someone has done something similar and had any insights about the difficulty of CPA PREP vs. completing through university.

How to study for cpa exam?

    Posted: 25 Dec 2021 09:47 PM PST

I've accepted a job at a big 4 for summer/fall but I am considering switching to a different one before I start. So, I don't want to use the study guide they provide so I don't have to owe them in case I switch.

How should I go about studying for cpa exam otherwise?

And if you just say YouTube, then who? And what order should I watch these videos in?

If there is another option other than that I'm curious to hear, but also don't want to pay too much

    Posted: 25 Dec 2021 09:18 PM PST

What is it like to work as a summer tax intern at a big 4 in the greater new york city area? What kind of work do interns do? Do they work in specific industries or get put on different projects in different industries? How are the hours?
