I have been in mental isolation for almost a decade. I absolutely need people to connect with. Posted: 03 Nov 2021 10:22 AM PDT So where do I start. Wanting to start a business has been something in my head since before I started school as a kid. It's engraved in me. My problem is it's all I want to do, but growing up that wasn't cool so essentially my interests and paths I have taken have distanced me from people. Once people started shaming me along with my parents I just ran away and caused many issues, and for 5 years now ive been hustling and building perspectives on how to execute. Honestly it's sucking the life out of me. Where are like minded people? I just wanna hear someone as pumped as I am about moving forward. [link] [comments] |

Starting a Phone Case Business Posted: 03 Nov 2021 06:37 AM PDT Hello all, This will be a short post but here it is. I have been looking at many different phone cases recently got the idea of starting my own phone case business. I have an idea of creating a phone case that has a built in battery pack and has the same multi layer protection of an Otterbox defender case. I don't have a sketch or a 3D model of it yet. The case will target the outdoor enthusiast and construction worker audience. Here is my idea of my phone case:
As somebody with no business background, I was wondering what would be the best place for me to start. That's pretty much it. Looking forward to the responses you guys have. [link] [comments] |
My business attempts and failures - unsure where to go next Posted: 03 Nov 2021 07:51 AM PDT Hi. I'm a long term reader of this subreddit. I'm 29 and have tried a whole bunch of businesses with the aim of being "my own boss" by 30. That deadline is only a few months away and I have not succeeded. Here's a bunch of the ideas I've tried. Maybe you can advise me where to go next as I'm currently lost. Supercar Meetup - Here I wanted to organise supercar meet-up events. I even got the local council to agree to host one in a city center location. However the supercar owners didn't want to pay to show their cars, they thought the public should pay. The public would never pay to enter what is a public city center and see the cars so I realised I couldn't get any income and cancelled the show. Vegan Subscription Boxes - I started a subscription box business, for vegan foods. I'm not even vegan myself but I saw the trend. This did work to a level, in that people subscribed. But the issue was, to give people new food each month and making a margin meant spending hundreds on tons of inventory, for only a few boxes. The next month would come around and again to satisfy the say 20 customers with new items I had to buy hundreds at scale of new products. After about 4 months I had thousands of items of food going out of date and I realised without huge warehouse and investment I could not scale. So I lost a lot of money in wasted inventory Dropshipping - I picked the camera niche and tried to set up a site to sell things like camera handles, straps, lens caps, etc, all the funky but cheaper stuff for photography. No-one visited the site and even with Facebook ads no-one bought anything. Looking back, the site looked very cheap and am not surprised there were no sales Print On Demand Dropshipping - Similar to above but with Printify integration. I actually think the site looked good quality, and I even posted items on Etsy however I never got a sale after 3 months I quit. SAAS Software - My biggest attempt, and largest loss of time. I spent over 6 months full time with no income coding a saas e-forms software that would allow businesses to create their own workflow processes. This was about 5 years ago now, so before things like Airtable were big. I visited businesses in my suit and tried to sell. I did manage to get in front of business owners but as a techie-geek-non-salesman type I could not get any sales. Stocks - I paid a group for a while that claimed to have an algorithm to find good stocks. To be fair I never lost money, but never made any either. I did spend about an hour a day for about 4 months on the side but could see it would never work. YouTube - I've spent the past 2 years spending almost every weekend making YouTube videos. The entire 2 years has generated about £1k, which is nowhere near minimum wage for the time I spent on it. I don't fully regret this as it was fun, I got 8k subs but I've just decided to end it because I can't see it's ever going to be big enough to pay for itself. Anyway that's most of it, there were a few other bits here and there but I've just hit a point where I'm lost. All I've wanted since about 9 years old is to "be an entrepreneur" - i.e have the freedom to work for myself and have a good income. I've worked hard and my experiences have given me a reasonable income (probably top 15% earner) but nowhere near the income to be truly free or to forget money worries. My problem is I have no idea where to turn next, I want to "GRIND" and "HUSTLE" but I don't know doing what.... anyone else feel the same or have ideas? [link] [comments] |
No talented developers want to join a bootstrapped start-up Posted: 03 Nov 2021 11:49 AM PDT I've been growing my bootstrapped software agency business for the past 2-3 years. Have taken a few hard falls and have also seen really good times. When we were starting out we had a lot of interns and part-timers that really helped us propel into serving more clients but of course those kinds of resources never really helped us deliver the quality we were trying to go for, and they were not consistent because of exams, other activities, etc. Naturally, as we grew to a more stable position and the interns started finishing their terms with us, we started hiring full-time developers with past experiences. Starting off the pay wasn't great because we had no idea what the market salary was because we didn't do proper research and hadn't had a proper development job ourselves in the local tech scene. We ended up raising our salaries to market standards and added other benefits. But we only have 2 developers now. We tried hiring so many times but no quality developers want to join us. This super talented guy we gave a decent offer to told us he needed to give 2 months notice at his previous workplace, so we waited. But after the first week of joining us, he said he'd gotten an offer from a big company and wanted to leave and go there because he doesn't want to join a start-up and was not interested in any counter offers. Now we're left stranded with a couple of projects and no one to work on them. This has happened to us a couple of times before as well. How do you, as a start-up owner make your initial employees realize your long term vision? Seems like in a job interview I need to be the one convincing a good candidate to join us, how do I tell them why they should join us as a start-up agency instead of a big company? To be honest, even I'm not really sure how to answer that. The reason I mention 'bootstrapped start-up' in the title is to let you know we are already below the profit margin ratio we should be for a services-based agency in our domain, so we can't offer employees some benefits like company cars, fuel allowance, medical insurance and things like that although we're trying our best to offer what we can. Looking for you input guys, thanks a lot for reading. [link] [comments] |

What do these Click Funnel entrepreneurs do? Posted: 03 Nov 2021 08:18 AM PDT I have a friend who I don't talk to much but she is ALWAYS posting these websites about 30 day cashflow challenges all about creating content that is going to cashflow automatically but I never have any clue what exactly she is selling or what the content is for. The sites are ALWAYS on clickfunnels and with the same weird click funnel timer and call to actions. And I see these EVERYWHERE, lots of people on tiktok selling similar stuff and they have big conferences and all that. What do these people even do or sell? Does anyone have experience with this? We used AI to analyze +100,000 tweets and can now predict how well your tweet will do! Posted: 03 Nov 2021 06:53 AM PDT Hi here 👋 I'm Simon, founder of FeedHive. We launched our product in public beta 8 months ago. In this period, our users have used FeedHive to publish more than 100,000 posts to Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, and Facebook. We've been using AI for idea generation for a while, but recently, we decided to up the game! Sitting on more than 100,000 posts - including private metrics such as impressions, number of profile clicks, link clicks, details expands, etc we realized it was the perfect opportunity to start using this data to train an AI model. The AI model that we ended up with, can predict how well your post will perform in terms of engagement rate, and - according to one of our users - "out of 4 posts, 3 scores were stunningly correct". So - let me share some insights into how we did this. The AI EngineFirst of all, I think it's worth mentioning, that no members of our team are specialized Machine Learning experts. We used OpenAIs popular GPT-3 to create this solution. Their platform allows to perform a so-called fine-tuning on some of their engines. This basically means, that you take one of their models, provide it with training data and specialize it. We used their Curie engine to create our fine-tuned model. This is not their most powerful model, yet, the results were surprisingly good! Preparing the dataOpenAI made the process of fine-tuning a model incredibly easy. Huge kudos to the team, they really did a great job! The hard part is preparing the training data and account for biased. Accounts with a large following get more engagement, and their posts tend to reach further. Does that mean that everything they post is just better? No - we can't make any such assumption. So in order to account for this, we chose to use engagement rate as our metric for performance. That is, the number of total engagements (likes, replies, retweets, link clicks, profile clicks, ...etc) divided by the number of impressions/views of the post. Yet - this introduces another bias. Very small accounts now have an advantage. Say a profile with 10 followers gets 5 views and 1 like. That's a 20% engagement rate, which would be unheard of for big accounts. Thankfully, OpenAI allows you to do 10 full training sessions per month - free of charge - and they will even extend this upon request. Needless to say, it took us quite a few rounds of experimenting to find a good balance between penalizing the score of certain accounts and giving a bonus to certain others, in order to make the training data as non-biased as possible. (We're constantly improving this still!). Classification vs. CompletionSo - this part gets a little technical. OpenAI offers different ways to use their powerful engines. When you look at a problem like this, your first intuitive thought might be that you should use classification. It seems like that's what we're doing, right? Actually, we didn't get good results with classification at all. Instead, completion seemed to work very well. In a simplified version, we trained the Curie model to complete a prompt on a structure similar to: Post: "This is my best tweet" Score: And then have the completion being a single number between 0-9 indicating the prediction. The training data then consisted of 100,000 of these, where we had given each post the score from 0-9 based on our ranking system. Deploying the modelAfter each training session, you can use your model by simply referencing it in an API request, so again - deploying the fine-tuned model and using it to serve real-time outputs has been made ridiculously easy by OpenAI. Do you want to try? 🤩Just head over to feedhive.io and create a user. You'll get 7 days on the free trial to test it out. This ended up being a small blog post, hehe. I hope this can help and inspire someone else to get into AI and GPT-3. It is truly a game-changer. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. [link] [comments] |
Grunt fund model: how to include loans? Posted: 03 Nov 2021 02:37 PM PDT Hi, Has anybody used this model for a dynamic valuation, or just as a measurement moment somewhere in your startups period? I like the idea but am struggling with the valuation of money. The valuation of money added to the company is much higher than hours for example. Dont you think? And how to include loans? Especially if the loan is much higher than the money that was put in by the founders. The high valuation of the money put in by founders doesnt make sense anymore... [link] [comments] |
Can I keep building my business on the side? Posted: 03 Nov 2021 02:37 PM PDT For the past 7-months I've been scrambling by with little to no income whilst continuing 13hrs a day working on my business. It's been a hard bullet to bite; putting my ego aside I know I need to generate income asap and just get a …job .. again in the meantime. I need to live my life. I'm not giving up on the business and I have other projects I hope to grow into streams of income, but I wanted to ask those in this community that have been in similar situations, is it possible to succeed with a full time job? Advice for a failing small coffee shop (long) Posted: 03 Nov 2021 02:02 PM PDT Hello! As the title says I'm seeking advice for my small coffee shop that is in a really fragile spot, but firstly I'd like to give some context. I'm an 18yo student uni student from south America. The previous year I had opened a bakery with my dad and the business was thriving, we were happy that it was working out. I was able to balance university with the work at the bakery so my life was stable back then. On March of this year my half-brother went to my house and offered my family opening a coffee shop, he proposed buying the machinery and paying for half of the costs for decoration while we put the establishment, the products and the other half of decoration costs. I never really had a good relationship with my half-brother but seeing my mother trying to bond us as a "family" made me accept his offer. My father gave me an advance of my inheritance to invest in the project as I didn't have any money. Later my brother also convinced one of my cousins to join and I said yes as it would be less money I'd need to give for decoration and other stuff. So we opened the shop in a partnership with my cousin and my half-brother. We began setting up shop around May of this year and opened on July. Everything went smooth, we had our inauguration and I had hope the shop was gonna work out, I had everything in my favor, the location was good, we had good products, the place looked good and prices weren't too high. The zone around the coffee shop is full of high-rise condos so we thought we could have a high amount of potential clients. Everything was going great, there were only some minor problems but nothing important, that is until the end of July. My half brother scammed us. He gave the coffee shop as guarantee for some loans and his lender started coming to the shop asking for his payment. So, all the machinery he said he was gonna buy for the partnership was all credit, and he had only payed one of the quotes. After a lot of legal struggles the next month it was all "fixed". The new situation: Only me and my cousin in charge of the shop, while the other guy disappeared and no one knows where he is since the last days of July. My cousin and I decided to look for another partner to pay for the stuff that my brother still had to pay and we found one the first week of August. However, mid August new lenders appeared at the shop, they also had the papers of the coffee shop as guarantee, but this loans were for a high amount of money (in my country at least). My brother pawned(? the shop for 30k dollars to 4 different people if I remember correctly. This caused the partnership to break, my cousin told me he had had enough and it was too much stress for him and the other guy had only two weeks with us and a bomb like this also made him drop. They wanted to close the shop but I literally have my life in there, my inheritance is at stake, so I decided to continue, they gave me a time lapse until January of next year to give them back their investment if I was going to continue, so I accepted, but I told them perfectly I didn't have that amount of money to give back. Both of them abandoned the project on September and now is only me and the shop. The shop barely has 4 months, the first months went great, but now there are days nothing is sold. Since that problem everything went downhill. My mother went into a depression and caused my parents to divorce because my dad didn't had it with my half brother while my mom defended him. I also had a lot to cope with and now it seems everything is failing simultaneously. The baker that I had for preparing the products for the shop left unexpectedly and until now I haven't found someone that gives me the same quality products I had at the beginning I... really don't know what is happening, but is like life is suddenly giving me a heavy punch to the gut. I'm young so I don't have much experience but I feel like I'm drowning, not only the shop, but also the bakery started failing at those moments. I had my own savings from all my high school years, around 1500 dollars, and today my account is in $2 approximately, I used them all to pay for the expenses of the last two months at the shop. I feel really demotivated, but I still think the shop can prosper, the only thing is, I have no more money to invest, and I'm not really sure of getting a bank loan. So, what advice could you give me? Should I close and lose all my money, continue struggling? I don't really know... Here are some photos of the place if someone wants to see them: https://imgur.com/a/n17hyQd I'm not sure if this is the place to post this, but as the name of the community is Coffee Shop I thought this would be the best place to ask, if someone knows other community where I can ask this please tell me. Btw, sorry if I have mistakes, my english is kinda rusty. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Nov 2021 02:26 AM PDT 🧳 SoloTravel DestinationsProblem: Finding the best destinations, hostels, bars, etc. for solo travelers takes time. Compared to other forms of traveling, planing solo travels has some specificities. A solo travel itinerary needs to consider climate, culture, food, as well as hostels, bars, restaurants, and areas of cities where solo travelers can meet other people. It also needs to consider limiting factors like public transportation and budget. Finding the right information for all of this takes time: one needs to pull data from different sources such as blogs, books, vlogs, travel groups, and online communities. Or one could hire an expensive travel agency. Both solutions are suboptimal. This might work better: Solution: Nomad List for solo travelers. Nomad List is a platform and community for digital nomads. Nomad List "finds you the best places in the world to live, work and travel as a remote worker. Every second, it collects millions of data points on thousands of cities around the world, from cost of living, temperature to safety. With that data, Nomad List gives you an idea of where it's best for you to go." What's special about Nomad List is that "all the data is refreshed in real-time based on user input." (source) One could build a similar solution for solo travelers: A platform for finding the best travel destinations for solo travelers, co-created by a community of solo travelers. The platform would feature a wide range of information, quick and authentic recommendations, individualization, and a community of like-minded people - all in one place. 🧑🤝🧑 Meeting travelers and localsProblem: Solo travelers look for others to connect with. While some solo travelers prefer to stay solo, others would love to connect with fellow solo travelers and share the journey. We often read posts of solo travelers complaining about feeling lonely, looking to meet people in their area, or for people to join their journey. One could help them do that with: Solution: Social app for solo travelers. Some people requested alternatives to the existing ways of meeting people. Many would use Tinder and Bumble but complain about having to explain that they're not out for dating but just meeting people (and that nobody uses BumbleBFF). Others shared that they would go to Couchsurfing meetups, but that those used to be better. Building an app that better supports solo travelers to connect with others may be an interesting opportunity. 📝 Sharing travel experiencesProblem: People want to learn from other solo travelers' experiences. By far the most upvoted posts in solo travel online communities were people sharing their solo travel experiences, some of them getting more than 1.8k upvotes. They love reading exciting stories, lessons learned, and guides about solo traveling. Passionate solo travelers could build a business around this demand by creating: Solution: Quality content in a blog or newsletter. There's one huge blog in this space with 250k+ followers: solotraveler. One could start a similar business. We would approach it like this: simply start with a blog or newsletter. One tried and true strategy for finding content that works is to search communities (like r/SoloTravel) for high-performing content and put your own spin on it. Once you've built an audience, you can expand your business by offering solo travel tours, paid content, travel gadgets, and so on. ------------------------- That's it for today. What do you think? Do you see more opportunities in the solo traveler space? The proposed solutions are probably just a glimpse into what is possible for entrepreneurs in the solo traveler space! I do this kind of research every week in different communities. Check it out if you find this helpful. Cheers! [link] [comments] |

Posted: 03 Nov 2021 01:26 PM PDT I've been running a highly branded dropshipping store for the last 18-24 months, and I'm now ready to move on. The store's made over $300k USD in revenues, and well over to $50k in profits since inception, and it's still doing around $10-15k USD revenue months consistently, even though I haven't worked on it for months. I have inventory stocked at a 3PL in California, and I'm willing to sell the entire store at-cost. I just want to recover some inventory and other start-up costs, and exit as I have another business making many times over what this store makes, and I just don't have time also being a full-time student. The store primarily drives traffic from Google ads and it's 3k+ mailing list. The FB pixel has thousands of purchase events and is ripe for someone to use (I haven't used it). If you're interested, just drop a comment below and let's talk. This isn't really a formal sale, I just want to get some money and hand it off to someone who can focus on the store better. It's either this, or I let it run into the ground and I'd much rather do this. [link] [comments] |
Credit Repair Startup. Good idea or just stupid and over saturated. Posted: 03 Nov 2021 01:09 PM PDT Hey r/Entrepreneur ! A little background on me before anything else... I am a 22 year old living along the east coast USA! I have been working in the car business doing sales since I turned 18 years old. I currently have dropped out of college twice since graduating high school before it simply isn't for me! Incase one of you missed the news over the last 18 months, the auto business is STARVING for both new and used inventory and going into winter it will not get ANY better. I have made really good money since I was 18 but like most dumb young kids I blew A TON of it. The cool thing is I'm ready to break the mold in my family of grinding for someone else for all of eternity. I have essentially no debt other than a cheap monthly apartment ($425 with all utilities included), car insurance, and cell phone bill so probably about $550 in bills every month. OK ENOUGH ABOUT ME! Now I know there is absolutely nothing special about a credit repair agency other than it being convenient. As with most things, you can definitely do this for yourself but why not pay someone to do it for you... After being in auto sales for going on 4 years I have learned a TON about credit and how scoring models actually work. I have never opened a business and I am completely nervous about taking the leap but I have nothing to lose. I just cannot take the 12 hour days of doing nothing or next to nothing at my dealership anymore. Currently the closest brick and mortar credit repair agency is about 40 miles away. Has anyone gone down this road before? I have no experience with anything self employed related so I'm willing to hear any and all advice. [link] [comments] |

Would T-Shirt designs that resemble other brands be copyright infringement? Does this new business(es) legal setup look good? Posted: 03 Nov 2021 12:51 PM PDT I have a few business aspirations. I want to start a company then have a supplier business established separately - the idea being that if I sold the business, I would still control a key supplier. So lets call this Company A, with the supplier org being Company A2. (i.e., pet store + pet food supply) Then I have a completely separate idea, which again, I want to immediately create a similar business to, that is technically separate entirely, in case of my any new owners, buyouts, etc - things that happen long after these decisions have been made. Company B, with the similar idea being Company B2 (i.e., an underwear store + a lingerie store) I plan to register Company A and Company B as LLC's, then create ACME, LLC and do a DBA as Company A2, B2 (and any other subsequent ideas). Once I register, launch, and pursue Company A & B, I will be looking for investors and co-founders/ owners. I would like to manage the smaller/ A2. B2 companies separately from their big ideas; with different teams, with me likely being the sole owner or boss, etc. I want to do this so I can 1) experiment with things I don't want to risk with the main company and 2) perhaps I'll sell out, but I'll always have something similar to maintain and explore. Is this the right set up? Any advice appreciated. [link] [comments] |
I need feedback on my business Idea (Pizza Club) Posted: 03 Nov 2021 08:23 AM PDT I'm putting this information out into the world because I don't think my idea is 100% original and I'm fairly certain there are people in my area doing similar things. I would appreciate any and all feedback you guys can give. Thanks in advance. PIZZA CLUB ! The general idea is to run a monthly or twice a month "members only" pizza night at my house. I haven't narrowed down the membership fee, but let's ballpark it at $100/yr and each membership admits the member and a guest to each "meeting". It starts small...invite a couple of friends, and have them each bring a friend, etc, etc...building memberships as time goes on. Currently, my house can accommodate 10 people each night but I can easily build an outdoor space to double this number. So what is included in a Pizza Club membership you might ask? I am a semi pro pizza enthusiast. I worked and managed a small pizza shop that did great business during my tenure. I have been making my own pizzas at home for close to 10 years, slowly perfecting my dough and sauce recipe. With my current equipment I can churn out 3 pizzas in a total of 13 minutes. While those pizzas are cooking, I would set up the next 3 pizzas and pop them in the oven as soon as there is space, etc...A Pizza Club membership gets you and your guest a total of two 14 inch pizzas. Each Pizza Club meeting has a different menu consisting of four different pizzas (as memberships grow, I could increase the menu but I'd rather make fewer, killer pizzas). Also included is all you can drink beer (I'd like to extend to full bar service in the future and could get a bartender friend to work the event), soda and water. The key ingredient to Pizza Club is atmosphere and interaction. I want to give each meeting its own theme. An example of this is Rock n Roll night - I'd do a stripped down menu (Pepperoni & beef, sausage and onion, extra cheese) paired with shitty tall cans (pbr, high life, coors banquet) matched with an appropriate soundtrack for the night (Thin Lizzy, Red Fang, Motorhead, High on Fire, etc...). To unsure I'm covering the gamut of approachability, I'd contrast this the next meeting with a Lofi hip hop night, ska night, etc... If I can get this going, even on a small level, I would essentially be funding the business on membership money. Ingredients are relatively cheap, so alcohol is where pricing could be over extended. I ultimately want to build an outdoor wood fired pizza oven for this venture. What do you think? [link] [comments] |
Social Entrepreneurship: I’m building a list of resources. Starting with podcasts Posted: 03 Nov 2021 08:15 AM PDT I've been listening to a lot of social entrepreneurship podcasts. I love the subject and decided to build a list. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1oBM_KiwbsLdKQzyca8gWPRox_wdESdcYgKFw1uGs54o/edit Who else should I add to the list? [link] [comments] |
Unhealthy Perfectionism/Anxiety Posted: 03 Nov 2021 11:40 AM PDT I'm an idea guy, but I struggle with pragmatism. I daydream and envision things non-stop uncontrollably. Yet, I freeze up when it comes to figuring out how to execute it. Or I can only get so far. What helps you guys get out of your head. I find that I will often overthink a step in the right direction because I'm too worried of the negative ramification's that could result. This often leaves actions un-started or executed extremely slow. I know its important to analyze risks, and mitigate negative results. However, sometimes it turns into a "wall of impossibility" and it becomes extremely discouraging. Some solutions I've thought of are finding people much smarter than me in the areas where the paralysis of analysis are most extreme, and hiring them to take over. Or just forcing myself to build the plane in the air so to speak. As in don't worry about knowing exactly how to execute and just do the thing you can and work it out along the way. (for context I've tried this to varying degrees of success) I've even gone as far as thinking about seeking counseling specifically for this issue. As it seems so easy for others to start new ventures or build out certain concepts, but for me I get stuck or only build something out so far. For the people who've dealt with this what are some solutions you've implemented or things you do to get things rolling when you have a good idea but not all the pieces. How do you get past a wall in your endeavors. What has helped you start something despite the risks involved or the lack of pragmatics. [link] [comments] |
What makes certification marks useful/valuable? Posted: 03 Nov 2021 11:31 AM PDT I'm looking into how best to communicate my company's values to target younger customers. Have any of y'all considered certification marks? If so, what made you choose to apply? Please share which marks you've used in the comments and if you liked any aspect of them. [link] [comments] |
