Trying to find Indie Hacker Businesses using Disruptive Open Business Models Posted: 18 Nov 2021 01:08 AM PST About a year ago I came across an interesting business model on (I think Indie Hackers, or something similar). The business was some type of OnlineJobs portal built for a specific niche and it was created by an independent software developer using scraping technology to curate jobs specific to the niche. The site also followed an Open Business Model where metrics such as user base, growth rate and revenue was disclosed publicly. This is abnormal for a private businesses, but the business model works around the idea of a community getting behind an underdog and being supportive. Unfortunately I cannot find information about this business model or remember the keywords to search for, to find the information again. Wondering anyone can point me to the either to the business model or the website that I have described above. Cheers, Dave [link] [comments] |
Trying to find the right HR platform Posted: 18 Nov 2021 01:57 AM PST Hi everyone, I am struggling to find the right tool to cover all the needs of our startup regarding HR/Payroll. We are currently 22 people, with a mix of contractors with a fixed monthly salary, and contractors that we pay them by the hour. Towards our clients, we also charge them on an hourly basis, meaning all of our employees need to daily log the amount of hours they work in each project. For this purpose, we are currently using Harvest, and is working fine. To keep track of the people with fixed salaries, we are using just a spreadsheet. For the purpose of general knowledge base, we are using Notion. Ideally, I would like to unify as much as possible in a single platform. However, there are some points which we are not currently doing right and I would like to include them in this tool as well.
In terms of pricing, we are paying around 25 USD per month between Notion and Harvest. Thanks in advance [link] [comments] |
What to give for a Christmas bonuses for full time employees? Posted: 17 Nov 2021 06:18 AM PST I have a full time employee who just started in September and wondering what I should give them as a bonus. What's normal for full time employees at a startup, and should them being new affect how large their bonus is? We are a fairly young company, I have another two employees and have never given out Christmas bonuses before but figure it would be a nice gesture. Any advice is appreciated. [link] [comments] |
How can I allow users to claim ownership of local business from my app? Posted: 18 Nov 2021 04:29 AM PST My app lists niche local businesses for my users to browse and visit while in the area and I'd like to allow (or invite) users who own a place to claim ownership so they can manage it from their profile. Is there a way I can do this from within the app? For example request a copy of ownership certificate? [link] [comments] |
Protective vs Transformational innovation (blue ocean strategy) Posted: 18 Nov 2021 03:48 AM PST Was just reading this article on transformation vs protective innovation strategy. Do you guys think that young companies should only focus on transformational strategy? aka disruptive/explorative innovation. Or does it also fall within a startup scope to focus on incremental/exploitative innovation? (article link in comments) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 17 Nov 2021 07:30 PM PST Has anyone did this before? If so , what's an acceptable conversion and CTR using Facebook Lead ads? I heard leads doesn't always equal interest. Is this true? I wonder if this methodology is still relevant today. If above metrics are good, how much should I spend on MVP? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 17 Nov 2021 08:51 PM PST Hi everyone, I hope you're all having a great day. I find myself in a situation and I am looking for any kind of advice on what to do. I realize no one can legally tell me what to do, but I'm hoping someone can at least help me navigate this situation and offer any kind of advice they can (any is welcome) Two years ago, my three co founders and I founded a startup to provide a solution in a growing market. For the most part, the last two years have been great. We all have good chemistry with each other and have worked very closely over the last two years. Issues started occurring over the past couple months when it came to executing everyday tasks and general disagreements over the course of how things should be run. I won't go super into detail with those but eventually it's led to my current situation. I feel like with the current trajectory, I'm going to get fired by the CEO. I wanted to ask you guys, or at least explore, what's going to happen to my equity? For context, the CEO owns 40% and us three own 20% each. So far I have completely dedicated my life for two years with this startup, being there since day 1 of conception and have contributed massively to virtually every area possible. Although we each had our own dedicated titles, we all wore many hats and assisted in different areas like sales, marketing, product design, etc etc. Since day 1, none of us signed anything in regards to vesting protocols or any other agreement in this post's title. We all own our equity in full. I don't think there's any going back now and the situation isn't repairable at this point because even if we do move forward, that contempt will always exist. I want to be fair here and work with them, but legally speaking, what am I entitled to? Am I entitled to my full 20% equity? We were also getting ready to raise venture capital and if a co founder leaves with 20% that would make raising money almost impossible since the startup looks unattractive. What can I do here to best protect myself here and what kind of questions should I be asking a lawyer about this? What kind of a lawyer do I need to find anyways? Any kind of advice or thoughts would be appreciated [link] [comments] |
Posted: 17 Nov 2021 05:53 AM PST I had an idea for a startup that I think has some potential but I was wondering what is the most cost efficient way for somebody on a budget to achieve leads without using PPC, SEO or getting funding elsewhere for marketing etc. I was just curious what other means would be available. Posted: 17 Nov 2021 09:02 PM PST I (with 2 others) just started a C-corp in the USA. We did not put any money initially in the company during share assignment. What is the easiest way to get some of our own initial funding into the company? We only need to put $x,xxx into it right now, so not a very large amount, and we don't care about payback. Should we do something like a SAFE, or a straight loan? We do not expect to take in any direct profits for multiple years. [link] [comments] |
Solo dev - should i hire someone? Posted: 17 Nov 2021 04:26 AM PST I am building a saas mvp as a solo dev. So far I've been living on my savings and developing it full time for a few months. I'm at the point where I think I have to go back to 9-5 to support myself financially. I don't want to give up the development so my question is, is it a good idea to hire someone so they work on the app while I'm at work, or just work 9-5 (and building the app after work and on the weekends) for another 6 -12 months, until my contract finishes, the money tank gets refulled and only then get back to the mvp full time. If I hire somebody (that would be my first hire ever), I'm obviously going to lose some control over the development, but there are some advantages to it. For example redelegating more tedious work to someone else, so I could focus on big picture more. Having a specialist in team, rather than jack of all trades (which I'm now). Bigger chances for external financing (they see a team, not one person), I could reduce the income tax (could maybe even hire two devs to decrease the income tax even more). Gaining experience and keeping good practices in organizing work in a team (as a solo dev all my git messages recently are just "update" XD) Do you guys have any experience with hiring somebody to help you build your product as a solo founder? I'm interested to know your opinions on this. [link] [comments] |
Is it a bad idea to incorporate a US company just before fundraising when coming from overseas? Posted: 17 Nov 2021 09:41 AM PST We're an overseas company preparing for a fundraising round, and when inquiring about this, most people told me it would be a bad idea as no one will invest in a new newly incorporated, and foreign-owned company. But, wouldn't I be able to explain to any potential investors why the company is new? Technically, if I have all the paperwork proving that I transferred all the assets of the overseas company to the US one, why would this be an issue? We are a technology company operating software and hardware, so I would only need to transfer the IP and contracts to the new company. I know this is easier said than done, but it shouldn't be too hard. I understand there are some regulations to foreign-owned companies, but will it kill a deal? [link] [comments] |
Insurance and Benefits / HR for first employees for a US-based startup Posted: 17 Nov 2021 12:37 PM PST I raised a seed, and want to turn many of my engineers that I was paying on ICs into full-time employees. I am not sure what to do regarding insurance and benefits for these employees. Frankly, I'm not sure how to handle HR at all as a very young founder. Should I be investing in these benefits or not? None of the employees have asked for it explicitly yet, but I'm not sure if it's standard or will save my butt later, especially with employee retention long term. How do I handle HR as an early-stage startup? [link] [comments] |
How can I get press coverage for my brand or products? Posted: 17 Nov 2021 06:29 PM PST I have an e-commerce brand that sells tea bags. Since the social media presence is growing, I've been trying to reach out to digital media such as the New York Times, New Yorker and Vogue etc to review my products. However, I have not received a lot of response as I had expected. Here are the questions, 1, How do you have writers at digital media companies try your products and review them on their sites? 2, Is it ok to send pitch mail from contact forms?Or should I directly reach out to writers and journalists via Linkedin? 3, Is there any other way to get press coverage? What’s the best book on measuring market feedback in the early days of a product? Posted: 17 Nov 2021 12:23 PM PST If no book exists please let me know if there are other sources of knowledge on this (videos, blogs etc). Essentially learning when to determine: should I build this based on mvt/mvp response or not - sometimes it's not clear. I believe it's an art rather than science, but I still want to know how we can learn from other's experience in this area. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
