If the cofounder of a private equity firm backing a startup becomes that startup's CEO, is that normal or sketchy?

I am researching a startup. The startup has a private equity firm backer. The cofounder of that private equity firm became CEO of the startup the same year the startup began receiving funding from them.

Is this how normal business works in this area, or is that weird?

How important is your company's name?

    Posted: 06 Nov 2021 08:24 PM PDT

We've been debating the name for our company for weeks now.

Part of me wants to just say "enough - the name doesn't matter. Whatever we choose will take on meaning if the company is successful."

But the devil inside keeps torturing me "no, choose the wrong name, and you'll be doomed from the start."

Anyone here gone through something similar?

Is home-flipping no longer a viable option?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2021 01:48 AM PDT

Zillow is ending its widely known home-flipping operation. They lamented the consequences of the decision — it is laying off 25% of its employees — but concluded that the financial costs were too great; the company lost $380 million last quarter.
This is because they bought houses at high prices and were incapable of predicting future sales price.

They used the Zestimate Machine Learning algorithm for cash offers on homes , though they also got consultation from local brokers but they still ended up overpaying.

Is housing supply an issue? Are there any indepedent brokers who are fairing better than large organisations in the present real estate market?

    ESPN Gaming

I'm wondering if there's any other Los Angeles people on here who want to start a ESPN type of broadcasting network but for gaming? Would love some collaboration. If anyone is interested feel free to DM me or email me. I could create a discord if we wanted to discuss this. I'm in Downtown LA. I could even host it at my apartment. Let me know what you can bring to the table!

Can you work for more than one startup at the same time?

    Posted: 06 Nov 2021 07:03 AM PDT

I've recently started working for a start up as an independent contractor. This is my very first time stepping into the tech world in a start up. I'm interested in working for another start up but I was not sure if I should mention my connection with the previous one in my résumé or cover letter. I am not sure how to navigate this. Would this be a red flag for either companies?

How novel should the idea be?

    Posted: 06 Nov 2021 05:57 PM PDT

    Hi folks
I'm not new to entrepreneurship but I feel like I'm starting all over again some days 🙂

Interested in your opinion and experience!
I'm evaluating several startup ideas and I've noticed a common theme in a lot of our ideas: many are market pull problems that appear to be not fully solved but there are existing products that claim to be solutions. In other words we see major problems, and there are other companies with the same basic idea but yet the problem is still rampant. It looks like there are solutions but they don't appear to be widely deployed. E.g. for one of our startups there is a health related device that we found on the market that is pretty similar to what we wanted to create. The company appears to be at least successful enough to have a polished e-commerce site and lots of press, but yet I've not found anyone using it, and the target customers are still experiencing the "pain".

I have found it discouraging when we identify what appear to be real problems, but find another company that found the same problem and is already in the market.
We seem to be focused on ensuring our business idea is completely novel, and I'm wondering if we are too focused on that and missing out on opportunities.

My question, how important do you think is novelty alone when it comes to forming business ideas? What I'm finding is that we explain our idea to potential stakeholders, they do a google search and find something similar in the market and tell us it's already been done.

My intuition is that existing solutions don't have wide adoption for a reason. It might be that the competition is successful but only in a niche market and there are broader markets or other niches that are still opportunities.
Has anyone else been faced with this dilemma of "it's been done" but yet you have this nagging feeling there is still a big opportunity?
    thanks!

How to decide micro saas product pricing?

    Posted: 06 Nov 2021 06:34 AM PDT

Hi everyone, if someone wants to start with micro saas product then how should one decide about pricing? Lets say if I want to sell micro saas product (assume costs $10 per month) and there are already many competitors in market selling similar product with around 2-3x number of features (assuming it costs $15-20 per month) then why would someone be interested in micro saas product with few features. Someone can easily put 5-10$ extra and get product with more features. Can someone please let me know what can be done in such situation? Has someone came across similar situation before? Thanks in advance

Founding a startup while employed. Help from cofounders/employer

    Posted: 06 Nov 2021 03:43 AM PDT

Had a discussion at a current employer (smb/startup ca. 400 employees) with one of the cofounders. He thought I want to also start a company at some point, offered support and open doors.

I told him, I might confuse people, including him, since I am torn apart between founding a company and being employee.

If I would like to start a company, what would be the biggest help. Investment (how big), direct from company/private, as angel or via some network, other sources, first customers, helping with pitch/business plan/concept. Anything other?

From my simple guy mind, thought help would be if the company would be first paying customer and use it as a reference. Would it open doors to other possibilities?

Not sure what he can offer. Think to ask him directly what is possible.

My service/product is working (also used at the current employer for free of charge/pilot/test) but there, as with any product, is improvements potential and also competition.

Hmm also when you hear 90% (guess) or more startups fail in first years, similar is non profitable.... Make you think about a switch carefully

Maybe parttime company and parttime startup. Or 4/5.... But this could also jeopardize my career (currently in management/leadership)

I am a fan of bootstrapping, but maybe in current era it is not possible anymore. Investment is a must

Country is Germany, Europe. Maybe helps with tips/advices.

I appreciate your help and thank you in advance
