So I went ahead and hired the alcoholic the first week is over

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 05:03 PM PDT

    https://www.reddit.com/r/smallbusiness/comments/qeje4g/to_hire_a_person_with_issues/

First off thanks for the advice, I took in everything everyone said. I obviously hired the person in question.

When I hired him I had a honest conversation with him about what I expect out of him. I felt he was honest back to me, this guy is someone I've known for a long time. I did talk to him about his drinking so he is aware that I know he's an alcoholic. I didn't call him an alcoholic but I made it clear I wasn't oblivious to his problem. He was honest that he probably does drink too much. He did say he has never drink at work, I spoke to an old supervisor of his, who backed this up (I personally know his old boss). I wouldn't call him a friend, but I have had drinks with him, etc. So he knew he couldn't lie

    • He is not allowed to show up to work visibly impaired, everyday he comes to work he has to check in with me before starting. I will also use this time to tell him what I want him to focus on. If he had too much to drink, he is too call in sick.
    • Every Friday by 5 PM he has to decide what his schedule is for the next week. I expect him to stick to this schedule, if he doesn't I will revoke this privilege's away from him and set his hours myself. He said he loves the fact that he gets to decide when he works.
    • He is not allowed to handle the keys, nor even go inside the vehicles. His only job to clean the exterior.
    • Made clear if I catch him drinking on the job its immediate termination with no questions asked.

So his first week is over. Honestly I'm really happy so far I know it very early. However he showed up time, he did a good job. He also seemed very happy, he says he likes seeing the transformation that his work is causing. Vehicle is very dirty, he works, after he's done its not dirty anymore.

    Some Q&A

    • Why not hire someone else or contract out to another company
    • We are on a military base (I run a contract my company is in charge of) installation that I am not in charge of, in order to get an individual access I would need them to go through background checks, and submit paperwork, and wait for approval, etc. Its a lot of work for a position that doesn't pay much. Therefore the person I hire has to have access already.

    • Why not pay more, offer more hours?

    • The budget is the budget, its something that viewed as nice to have but not required. If we can't get it done for what we have budgeted we simply aren't going do it

    • Why not hire teenager/etc

    • I have I find young teenagers tend to not have good work ethic. Also when I find a young teenager even if they are good they will quickly move onto better things like going to college/etc

    • Why not hire someone who doesn't have issues?

    • The reality of the position is that it doesn't pay much (in terms overall pay I think per hour its decent) our potential hiring pool is limited so therefore gotta take what I can get. Last time I advertised this job I got one applicant. This time around I didn't even put it out for applicants I simply approached someone I felt would take the job that was a good fit.

    • You do know its too early to tell if he's going work out or not?

    • Yea I do, I'll update in a few months but I think its going be good for everyone. We get someone to do the job we want at the price we are willing to pay, that person gets extra pocket money. Everyone wins.

    • Are you concerned about the person driving to work drunk

    • No the person doesn't drive, he has a bike he bikes around on. He's been operating this way for years.

I own a landscape company, and installed a patio. Now after installation, i see the patio needs a retaining wall below it.

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 04:55 PM PDT

We build a patio, its very nice. However, after the fact we now see the yard slopes and so the patio is very high in the air above the yard in some spots.

To fix this, an additional job needs to be done, for installing a retaining wall below the patio.

The homeowner is angry that this was not known, angry that there will be a new quote. However, technically the retaining wall isn't NECESSARY, but will look much nicer. I probably should have known, but I didnt cause im sorta new(they know this)

    Whos in the wrong?

Edit.) i should clarify, one homeowner is understanding that this was unknown(as they didnt know themselves), and the other is saying we should have known. This is why I am having a debate about the topic

The one that was open was full of caucasians. No Latino workers.

Anyone else seeing a lack of Latino applicants? (US, Midwest)

    Chip shortage finally hit home....

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 04:10 PM PDT

My company released it's first product (hardware with a software component) almost 3 years ago and since then we've established distribution channels in different parts of the world and listened intently to customer feedback which cemented the direction we chose to take with our product roadmap. In August 2020 we used profit from sales and our own money to license a hardware / software technology for a new range of products we plan to release over the next 5-6 years. The license included a Product Development Kit and then the ability to purchase the licensed chips for our products.

We then invested a great deal of our limited resources into this tech, since it is the future of our company and linked to our business plan and product roadmap. There have been many ancillary costs for development - hardware prototypes, outside contractors helping with software, an out of state strip for testing, etc. As an Electrical Engineer I dedicated my life and spent countless hours designing the schematics, circuit boards, coding the firmware, thermal studies/custom heatsinks - the list goes on.

This all just came to a halt when we suddenly found out that we probably will never be able to get the chips we licensed, as it was placed on "allocation" by the original manufacturer, even though they had previously said the chip wouldn't be EOL until the end of the decade. Unfortunately there is currently no allocation available for us. Could this change? Who knows.

Should we pivot or throw the towel in? Sometimes you can turn bad news into opportunity, but this one has been difficult since we've invested a ton of time and money into it. Pivoting to something else entirely seems daunting at the moment and truthfully, even though we just started the design last August, I've been formulating and thinking about the whole concept for at least a decade. Perhaps it's time to move on...

Thanks for listening and hope to get some feedback or thoughts.

New pickup truck with trailer or used diesel box truck with lift gate -100k miles

    Posted: 03 Nov 2021 12:29 AM PDT

Need to add a vehicle to my business and have priced out that the two options above to be the same price and within my budget.

I'm leaning towards the box because diesels last long and the lift gate would save my employees backs.

    Advice for handyman business?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 06:23 PM PDT

I'm an experienced tradesman so I'm not venturing into this entirely blind in hopes of liking it. Working with my hands is my calling and I'm proud of my work.

That brings me to the point: anybody have some general advice for a one-to-two person handyman business? I'm 25 years old, just moved back to Los Angeles County, and I've been in and out of various trades since I was a teenager.

I know I can advertise on things like Taskrabbit, Handy, Thumbtack, NextDoor, Instagram, Facebook, Craigslist, all that, as well as word of mouth/business cards/flyers.

What I'm most concerned about is payment processing, business licensing, if applicable since I'll basically be a sole proprietorship, in LA County, etc. Is the "money = income if >$500" accurate or does this work differently?

Do I need to bonded/insured when I start? I know it makes more sense to be, but I haven't done a lot of residential. Most of my work has been commercial/industrial.

My uncle runs a home remodeling business but he's a little shady so I'll only be asking him for advice with actual work, not business practices.

    Thanks!

Do I need an outside accountant/Is this a good price for a small business?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 03:01 PM PDT

Just recently started a small consulting company in NJ. I am the only employee. This year I will be taxed as a sole proprietorship because I have very little expenses and just some startup costs. Next year I expect to make enough to elect for taxation as an S-Corp.

I have always done my personal taxes using TurboTax. I plan on using Quickbooks for Small Business to keep track of my bookkeeping. My business the revenues will just be payments from clients. Expenses are minimal (mostly tech, some entertainment, an office).

Do I need an outside accountant at this stage (particularly with the future S-Corp election). I recently got a quote from an accounting firm that I know is reputable and knowledgeable from references and interviewing them (though these references run small businesses but with multiple employees).

For 2021 to file my federal and state income tax including schedule C to document my startup costs they are quoting $700.

For 2022 to handle the S-Corp election, quarterly estimated taxes, a bi yearly review of my bookkeeping, and filing federal and state taxes/dealing with a k-1 they are quoting $4500. In this case they are not handling payroll. That is extra.

I know people pay $400 for personal tax returns so I guess $700 is within range but I thought $4500 is ridiculous. But I also have nothing to base that on. Am I wrong about this for a sole member LLC with 1 employee.

    Business Idea Advice?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 08:35 PM PDT

Hi all, I'm struggling with my desire to open up a business. A little about myself- I left my corporate job of three years because I couldn't stand sitting behind a desk anymore. I was making good money, had job security, etc., but I felt as if I wasn't making a difference. Just making the company richer. I left the job, took a 50 percent pay cut, and have been working outdoors since. I don't hate the work; however, I wake up every day with a burning desire to own my company. The idea of scheduling jobs, managing, pricing, quoting, etc. excites me, I just can't pinpoint the right opportunity for me. I'm interested in real estate, land development, service businesses. I live in a small town (appx. 8,000 people), and I'm struggling with finding a niche that hasn't been completely saturated. Any advice / ideas is greatly appreciated.

COVID, Maternity Leave & Holiday Entitlement = ?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 04:34 PM PDT

    UK based.

I'm sturggling to understand maternity and holiday entitlements. Add to this a pandemic and I feel like I'm completely in over my head.

At the end of 2020, UK govt announced unused holiday from 2020 can be taken in 2021. No problem at all. My staff worked very hard through a pandemic, and still took at least 50% of their entitlement - an extra week or two off this year was no problem.

However, I have an employee that was off for the majority of 2020 on maternity leave. On return in 2021, they went down to 3 days part time.

It has left me in a bit of a situation in terms of their remaining holiday entitlement. In 2021 they had 100% of their holiday entitlement remaining from 2020, and now work 3 days a week, accruing holiday entitlement at the 3-days per week rate.

With the maternity holiday accrual, covid rollover and the move to part-time, they were left with what is effectively 16.5 working weeks holiday for 2021, based on how we worked it out.

They booked in lots of time off through 2021 which was okay, but they could simply not use it and still have around 7 weeks of holiday to use. They have suggested that they just take the last 7 weeks of the year away from work in order to use it all. So as of next week, we would not see them until next year.

I want to be a supportive employer, support proper maternity leave and going the extra mile to help during a pandemic, so I'm not looking to be ruthless or harsh. But after staring at potentially 7 weeks of holiday in a row, it made me take stock again and I now feel like this 2021 entitlement may have been calculated all wrong. I don't feel like anyone gets that's much time off. But I am new to this, so here I am asking for help…

Does 16.5 weeks of paid holiday after returning from maternity leave sound like it could ever be correct?

It's the first time I've had maternity leave to calculate around. So if this seems as though it theoretically could be correct… I will see them next year. But if I've made some amateur hour mistake that others have before, it would be good to hear from them.

Is google ranking important for a photo retoucher

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 07:50 PM PDT

I'm looking to grow my business. I currently have a retouching studio that I manage by myself and I hire 2-3 freelance retouchers a week to help with the overload. Sometimes I even hire 5 people a week to get the work done.

So things are going pretty well but I want things to grow a bit more. I want to add 2-3 big clients to my portfolio.

Through out my years in the business, I got all my clients through word of mouth and one client came from google. I didn't have any ads, I did the SEO myself and they happened to go to the third page and they found me :)

I've been working with very big clients and I feel like those leads are not going to search for a photo retoucher on google. Instead, they are going to ask their circles about a referral.

But, I might be wrong that's why I'm here asking this question.

From experience, knocking on doors have proven to be very helpful. I don't always get a reply, most people just ghost me.

But recently, I thought I can allocate a bit of money to get an SEO expert. They suggested writing blogs which I am not a fan of at all and they want to work on the SEO of the website.

They are asking for a good chunk of money, around 1K a month and this will take 3-6 months of work.

In your experience, should I go with the SEO for this type of business or just allocate my time to message people on linkedin and try to get clients myself?

    Starting a company

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 07:36 PM PDT

Hi I would like to get advice on a situation I am in.

I have two other partners and the deal is for me to secure an investor on my own (they have put in a decent amount of money and I have only put in my time) I would be getting less than half the equity and I am worried this may be used against me.

Context: They are significantly older and will be putting in the money while I put in the time and they are family while I'm not

My question is: 1) Can both of them choose to screw me over by slowly kicking me out after getting investment. 2) Is there a way I can get a third equity and half of the overall voting rights to prevent situations like them declaring random expenses or paying themselves first with investment money 3) Is there a clause I can use to state that I will not be liable for expenses or lawsuits despite being a shareholder

Are keychains, stickers and pins profitable?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 07:35 PM PDT

I recently went to a convention and of course everyone and their mother were selling all sorts of keychains, stickers and pins. The prospect of starting an at home business like this seems exciting but it is worth the time and money? Had anyone had experience with selling these items?

(I'm not going the cheapest route, nor the most expensive. A very nice middle of the road item with great packaging.)

Did you raise your prices incrementally or was it big jumps? Having confidence issues but charging hourly seems to alleviate a lot of problems.

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 05:57 PM PDT

    I'm a web developer/ seo person.

I started out charging $35 an hour. Then moved to $45 and now I'm at $50 an hour. No retainers yet, but I'm still getting people telling me my prices are too low.

But I'm pretty close to quitting my job which was my initial goal.

Just wondering what everyone's experiences were with raising your rates and what worked and what didn't.

Was incremental increases helpful for confidence and portfolio building?

Also having clients already helps me be more OK with getting a no because I'm already getting my bills paid. Thoughts?

How to deposit or cash a MoneyGram Money Order

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 11:57 AM PDT

A customer gave me a MoneyGram Money Order. I thought it was a check so I didn't pay too much attention until I tried to deposit it last night into my online business bank account (my bank has no physical locations). The money order says on it "mobile deposit prohibited" and my bank's app won't scan the money order so it can't be deposited. I reached out to my bank and they do accept money orders via the mobile app but since the money order says "mobile deposit prohibited" they said there is nothing they can do except for me to ask the customer to cancel this money order and submit a different form of payment.

As a last-ditch effort, I went to my personal bank today in person (Chase) and attempted to deposit it with a teller and she refused saying that since the money order is in my business name and not my name they cannot accept it. She suggested I tell MoneyGram I lost the money order and order a new one which I then make out to myself.

Any other ideas I haven't thought of?

TLDR: How do you cash a money order made out to your business name? Does anyone have any experience with this?

    Edited for grammar...
