Bootstrapped my productivity app to 700 paying customers as a solo founder! Posted: 29 Nov 2021 05:45 PM PST I know what you're thinking, another productivity app! I know it's a crowded space, but I like to think it's crowded because people haven't found the one that works for them. I bootstrapped my productivity app to over 700 paying customers. This took just over a year, with no marketing spend. One of the hardest things was getting the first 100 customers but after that it gets (slightly!) easier. There's 2 main ways I did this:
Here's my website for reference: https://llamalife.co There's still a long way to go. Just getting started. But I'm finding that these two growth mechanisms have been good for me! Obviously might depend on the type of product. This is a consumers SaaS. But you can adapt depending on who your target audience is. Feel free to ask any questions and I'll try and answer. Edited for clarity. [link] [comments] |
Closed My First High Ticket Client, 19K Posted: 30 Nov 2021 02:47 AM PST This is a hugee milestone for me because Im not the type to talk to people and deal with money stuff. But i finally did it and closed in 19k. 10k in the bank and 9k to be paid within the next 2 weeks. Its a first step to high ticket selling but its just one of many. To those who feel like they cant sell or doubt themselves........DONT WORRY ABOUT IT. Noone likes to be sold. You only need to ask questions and kill objections. The other person on the end of the phone dont know you nor do they care about you - they only care about getting their problem solved or just closing the deal before someone else does. Seriously, this was my first high ticket call with a client and im only 20 damn years old with stuttering issues. Never have I EVER done this and its thrilling to know that things have turned out better than Id expected. What I sell? I sell flatpacked garages and portable granny flats (2brm units). Because getting affordable housing in my country is expensive, most people would rather invest in a near new or good enough home building just to have a roof over their heads. (BONUS: no need to pay mortgage bills either). This guys been looking for affordable housing for 3 years and when he saw our ad he said he wanted to buy it asap. Of course there were a few bit of concerns like thinking its a scam or whatnots, but after a few messages back n forth and even allowing him to call another past client, he agreed and we closed the deal. Did I need a script? Heck no. I just thought, 'okay I need to find out who this person is, whats their motivation to buy this and how motivated are they to buy it'. All my questions were based around those three points. It didnt take long, we talked for about 15mins then before we closed the deal I asked, 'why didnt you buy the other (not to mention better quality) buildings around?'. Thats when he said, because of price. Everything looked good and new and all, but it all boiled down to price. Our one might not have looked shit hot, but it was still a home and an affordable one too. So..... I DID IT GUYS!!! I CLOSED MY FIRST HIGH TICKET CLIENT!!! [link] [comments] |
Losing motivation now that I've "made it"? Posted: 29 Nov 2021 08:15 AM PST I've been building and running small lifestyle businesses for over 15 years. Over that time, I've focused on passive income. I've finally come to the point to where with my savings and recurring income coming in are way more than my lifestyle expenses. I now have enough income to live off of for years. Although this is a great position to be in, I've found that I've been losing motivation. For so long, my goal was to get to this point to "retire" but now that I'm here, I'm not happy. I'm losing motivation and my discipline is nonexistent. My thought process: Why do this or that when I don't have to? What's the worse that's gonna happen? Lose out on more money? So what? I already have more than enough for myself, my family for years to come. Has anyone else been in this position? [link] [comments] |
So much Opportunity: You can build a business with GPT-3 Posted: 29 Nov 2021 04:57 PM PST I wanted to share our story on how I've build businesses using OpenAI API and some simple business solutions in proven markets. OpenAI has generated a lot of hype, but there hasn't been much about what can be done with general artificial intelligence. Natural language processing is one of the areas that'll greatly improve the connection between humans (mostly non-technical folks) and computers/the internet. Even getting a domain on GoDaddy has a good bit of technical jargon. One example of natural language processing I wanted to explore was shopping. How could we use natural language processing to make shopping even easier, well, first instead of an application - why not put it in your text messages(SMS). Then, someone would be able to send a text message to do his or her shopping, which sounds easier, but would it be? You could use some No-code boilerplates/templates to setup a dashboard and use the API to give you content suggestions, research, predictions, image generation etc. Here's a little application to test the theory: https://www.fridayy.me Feedback welcomed in comments or DM. My goal is to inspire others to create something simple and iterate it into a fledging business. [link] [comments] |
A small business dreams to grow bigger! Posted: 29 Nov 2021 11:34 PM PST Hi everybody! I have a small business, But I would like to expand it a little bit and switch to the B2B model. Now, as you can guess, my business is narrowed to B2C. Still, I don't have a huge business, but I would like to see any potential growth opportunities. At the moment I have a small car repair shop. We also sell different car spare parts, both original and aftermarket spare parts. Since our city is not very large, there are not so many other car repair shops. I would say, even more, it's hard to call them our competitors since we all have many customers and don't even compete with each other. I'm not sure if this situation is possible in other cities. But, we just got lucky. Still, some other car repair shops pop up around our small town, and they also would like to order car spare parts. Since I don't think they are going to order in bulk, I thought they could buy my dead stock from me. Well, I'm not gonna sell them something with defects, but I still have a lot of car parts that I've ordered too much. Besides, I think I can open something like a warehouse and just become one of the retailers in my region. But, on the other hand, if we think in the long run, there is a possibility to switch to the B2B model completely. So, I guess it is worth considering to test the market now and think in advance about B2B lead generation? It is hard to compete on a global scale rather than operating on a local market. I know it's a bit earlier to think about stuff like this, and now I'm just dreaming big. But, still, I would like to know some details if I ever try this niche. It would be interesting to know what type of hidden stones I might face as an entrepreneur? I understand that this market niche might be highly competitive. That's why I'm gonna start operating as a retailer on a local market. I'm not sure if someone else plans to do the same thing. Anyway, I've decided to share it here with you guys. I wonder what do you think of that? [link] [comments] |
ok, i admit it: dropshipping is not a good business model Posted: 29 Nov 2021 08:09 PM PST dropshipping is only good for very early stage (<1 year old) or mvp stage companies if you are doing revenue, its best to get 3rd party logistics or in house fulfillment. dropshipping is awful and why is that? heres my experience: say im selling holiday dresses. its dropshipped from china 1) unpredictable quality (common) 2) unpredictable shipping time (very common) this ones a killer. to test my pet supplies company ive ordered some pet supplies , 3 came in, 2 backordered for 2 months. but vendor made no warning of backorder you only find its backordered when you order. if its a customer order, you may get chargeback or cancel or confusing orders (things ship separeately) 3) communication mismatch (common) those 3 factors alone are brand killers especially the shipping times doing dropshipping in major volume would be a major headache, partial shipments and keeping track of which customer has what is a headache not to mention cancelations and chargebacks [link] [comments] |
Is anyone here running Glamping Domes? Posted: 30 Nov 2021 05:08 AM PST Hi there, I am trying to find the best solution for a glamping dome. Initially I was obsessed with the transparent Polycarbonate one, but after thinking it through, turns out it is not the best solution since there is usually no insulation, and it will get very hot or very cold quickly. What do you guys think, and what has worked for you? God bless! I am actually trying to offer it as an Airbnb place. Also, I dont live in US, I live in Albania and here are no domes to date. This is the project I fell in love with: Initially I wanted to offer something like this (close enough but not as pretty): But they offer no insulation and the structure doesn't seem too strong to me. Then I discovered this, and it kind of makes sense, but it is not too pretty: I don't have experience with any, so I'm asking for advice :/ [link] [comments] |
To those who own a liquor store or any alcohol distributor, how did you start? Any tips? Posted: 30 Nov 2021 06:05 AM PST Currently in the process of doing my own research, but I am currently at a college campus in which there is no liquor store close enough and a new retail spot is opening up. Any advise would be awesome. Thank you [link] [comments] |
A side business of selling software online Posted: 30 Nov 2021 03:19 AM PST Hi! I am software dev by profession and currently doing a job which provides me well enough. A job does not give me a sense of ownership and I always feel I should put my skills to use for myself. I have been looking for ways to do this but haven't been able to find any. Spending a lot of time pondering what I can do, I realized I might not be smart enough yet to build a unique SAAS solution yet. While researching I saw that there is a good market online for web based software solutions, developers sell software solutions like CRMs, stock management systems and what not online on markets like envato. After some thought and technical analysis, I felt I too should be able to build similar functional and competitive solutions and probably sell them online. I understand that the selling prices are too low (~60$) but the activity would give me a functional solution in hand which I could probably sell at better pricing offline or online through my own site. I would then go on creating more solutions and increase my portfolio. I could also probably get some custom work from the people purchasing my solution and help me kickoff into freelancing. I am just worried that does this approach towards some side income sounds viable? I might invest a lot of time, would definitely have to give this a few months but I am unsure of the outcome of the efforts I put in. Do let me know your thoughts on the above. I am also interested to know If there is something else I can do as a software dev to generate some side (+passive) income apart from the above. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Seeking Advice, Would love an outside point of view. Posted: 30 Nov 2021 06:39 AM PST Im 30 years old, I dont have any debts however I live from day to day (I do not have any savings). I work for my brother in law and my sister who are both surgeons (I manage their agendas and pacients information, etc) and Im payed well. However, I would love to have my own side business. I got out of a really toxic workplace last year (was there for about 5 years) as my family adviced me to, told to join their team to mentally heal. I think Its time to move on with something on my own, im just not sure what to do, been thinking about all night Would love to get advice on this one please Sorry for my english in advance, Its not my native language I didnt went to collegue like my brothers and sisters, but I enrolled in so many courses Work experience I Started working at 15. Video editing Interior design certification Pottery. learning ceramics Things I own. 2 baking ovens Kitchen Aid A complete baking supply (baking trays, cookie cutters, etc) 1 desktop computer made for design (my bf build it for me) Ipad Pro for digital drawing 1 pro Camara for recording Set of lights Small but cute kitchen. Pottery Wheel My family skills (chain of support): (wouldnt like to ask for help to the economics and financial field ones as they are the kind of people to say: ok, but you should have a career like us (im the youngest one)) but they are good people to be honest, we care for each other Economics Finances Medical field Sales and negotiation Fashion designer Animation 2D/3D and video editing expert. Advantages: I have a very good schedule, as mostly they are performing surgeries. Somedays I only go to the hospital for 3 hours at much, sometimes a full 12 hours turn, and other days I do not go at all (example, yesterday they called me to tell mw they needed to rest and they would close the clinic for a day). They do not discount me for that on my paycheck. And the design and administrative work I do for them I complete it in a couple of hours at much. So I have a lot of free time. And yes, I think thats about it. Maybe the answer is very clear, however I just cant.. come up with a clear idea on my head as I overthink everything. Hope someone can help me with his/her input. Creative work: freelancer vs agency vs in-house? Posted: 30 Nov 2021 06:19 AM PST Hey guys, I'm currently in somewhat of a dilemma. We're looking for some help with creative work: tweaking website, landing pages, copywriting, brochures, etc. To those of you that run an established business, do you prefer to work with freelancers or agencies for quality work? If you have any freelancer or agencies you could recommend, please let me know as well. [link] [comments] |

What’s more marketable, R or Python? Posted: 30 Nov 2021 08:05 AM PST My current job is paying for me to learn the languages and I'm wondering which would be a better use of my time in terms of leveraging my knowledge into a side hustle. I've had a few other small businesses in the past and was thinking I could marry this with my financial knowledge to do some sort of data consulting. Which language would be more valuable to a potential client? [link] [comments] |
Sharing co-investment in an early stage startup on a side arrangement Posted: 30 Nov 2021 07:04 AM PST Hi all, Has anyone ever shared the right to invest / an allotment in a company with others? How did you structure that? A friend and I recently helped our good friend "M" land a great job with a very early stage company - pre series A. We and he think it has great potential. In addition to his equity package, he also got the opportunity to put in $50K to participate in an investment round, and he wants to let the two of us participate in that investment. The company doesn't want to deal with it and make us named investors or write up specific documents for us, so to speak, but they are fine with "M" getting us in on his shares. So we're trying to figure out how to structure this so it's a proper documented set up. Does anyone have any recommendations here? Should M set up an LLC of proportional ownership between us for this, or can we write up a little document about that? And if/when the day comes and we want to sell shares, anyone know how this would work? TIA! [link] [comments] |

Best Contact form you have seen on a website? Posted: 30 Nov 2021 12:29 AM PST Hi everyone, I buy and sell caravans. My current website is pretty much just a simple explainer, of how the process works, and why people should sell their caravan to me and then a contact form with several fields for them to fill out model/year and all that. Everything is okay with my business, but i have some money to spend this year to avoid too much tax (this is not an invite for people to contact me via dm) - also i build my website my self with Wix, and i'm pretty sure it could be more nicely done with layout, graphics and so on. If your websites only goal was to get offers in, what would you include and any design ideas or links to examples? I'm based in Denmark so don't think it matters to link to my site as you probably don't have any idea what it's saying anyway. [link] [comments] |
Rapid prototyping advice in advance of a tradeshow Posted: 30 Nov 2021 06:23 AM PST Hi all! I have a patent for a sports baby themed product that would involve both a silicone base and an outer layer made of a flexible material that can be printed. As I'm still finalizing other patents around this I cannot disclose exactly what it is. I could go the route of machining a mold but I'd rather not spend 10k+ at this stage if I can get a 3d printed version of it relatively quickly (before late Jan). My thought is to try finding a prototyping company in Canada (I'm in Canada) or the US who can help me but I wanted to float this out here to you guys and see if anyone has any good advice in this situation? Thanks so much. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Nov 2021 06:19 AM PST Hi all, I am currently studying a finance/health science degree at university and honestly hate it. I hate studying and do not see myself pursuing a job in any university-related degree. It's been the same story all my life, throughout the entirety of high school I had always been told by teachers I have so much potential but am 'lazy' and have no work ethic. After graduating high school I enrolled in university due to my parents pushing me to do so, as they believe attaining a degree is crucial to having success in life. Honestly, I have no idea what to do. For the past year I have been working at a gas station and have become extremely proficient in my work, to the point where the owner allows me to manage the store. So far, have 10k saved in the bank. I have also just picked up a second job in order to make more $, against my parents' wishes as it'll take focus away from my education. Although I dream of one day running my own business, to be honest, I have no hobbies or interests aside from bodybuilding which I have been doing consistently for around 3 years now. The only skill that I have is my social ability. It is extremely easy for me to make new friends and develop relationships with different individuals. I've always been the student that tends to distract the class or be extremely talkative. The golden rule of entrepreneurship is to turn your passion/skill into a business, but what if you don't have many passions and not many skills either? It seems as if I want to make a success out of my life, entrepreneurship is my only path as I would fail at anything that requires an education. Any advice is appreciated, thanks! [link] [comments] |
Thoughts on working part time when starting a business Posted: 30 Nov 2021 02:29 AM PST I'm about to hand in my resignation soon, after I have discussed my ambition to start a company with my boss. The company (not hour based self employment) is basically about making machines. For the first prototypes I could work 50% and still remain 50% employed. The first few months I will not be too busy with other tasks than prototypes, since we already spent a year doing market research. My boss said he didn't like that idea, because he believes people in my engineering role should always be able to support 5 days a week. But more importantly, dividing the 'focus' between the two would be hard in practice. What are your thoughts? Who has hands on experience? Should I hand in the resignation or push the 50/50 more? Staying 50% employed will cover my living expenses. But I do also want the company development to stay fast paced. [link] [comments] |

Failure probability distribution Posted: 30 Nov 2021 05:12 AM PST Hi all, let me think with you altogether, so if someone would like to train his brain a bit - please validate. Automating an investing strategy Posted: 30 Nov 2021 03:48 AM PST I am interested in creating a few bots to automate my crypto investing strategy. Ideally it would be something like telegram or discord bots that retrieve me information, metrics and news all day. Examples of a few things I'd like to track include blockchain network activity, exchange inflow/outflow, exchanges looking into new coins, wallet addresses, mining/staking, TVL/vesting schedule, social sentiment, leveraged positions, BTC/ETH dominance, etc I would like these bots to fetch me information and scan the web constantly, although they do not need to actually make the trade for me, not yet at least. I have no code or programming experience at all, if anyone has some tips on where to get started or any ideas I'd love to talk! [link] [comments] |
