My “friend”/Coworker took advantage of me while I was drunk Halloween night, I’m broken.

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 05:55 AM PDT

I'm 21f, he's 30m. We went out for the first time to a club (for the past 2 months we always go play pool, go to a movie, 6flags ETC.) I thought we were homies because how he talks to me, treats me ETC. I got WHITE GIRL WASTED on Hennessy. He sat with me the 2 hours I was puking my guts out laying on the concrete outside of a bar, fast forward to the end of the night he brought me home (I had plans of drinking so I didn't take my car, I never take my car when I plan to drink) I woke up to him grabbing on me, pulling me to him and touching on me in sexual ways.. I was so out of it I would be here for 2 seconds then gone for about 5 seconds… all I remember is him saying "let me put this condom on" I said… "what? You brought a condom so you planned this?" I literally feel like it was a set up and he planned for this. I don't even know if it was good, if I was wet or not… I don't know anything all I remember is a lot of a lot pressure down there. I woke up this morning with some blood in my panties. (I don't have sex often so that's probably why) but I'm so hurt, I've had convos with this man constantly about I don't do meaningless sex, and I don't have sex with coworkers and some how the issue got pressed. I don't know what to do, I really had brotherly love for him and this happened. I don't even remember anything except for that. After he got done, he already had his shoes and clothes on getting ready to leave so In my head I was like "damn this must have been the game plan all a long cause normally he has all the time in world for me. Idk if it was mission complete for him or what but if it was so easy for him to leave after he did that to me, why couldn't he have just left before having sex with me and being the bigger person cause he knew how trashed I was? Then before he left he tried to blame the sex on me cause when I said "you planned this?" He told me "no you did when you turned my car off for me to walk you inside" we live in Dallas, somebody gonna steal ya car if you leave it out running. Anyways, I don't have no clarification and I want to know the story from his eyes before I make any decisions cause I honestly don't know how anything happened but I'm hurt physically, mentally & spiritually… I feel so hurt. I've went so long with out sex, finding god, healing and then this happens

Roomate/Tenant is going to prison for life. When can I toss his stuff and rent the room out again.

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 08:32 AM PDT

So my roommate/tenant is going to prison. I own the home and he rents a room from me. He recently got into some legal trouble. After a year and a half trial he is going to be in prison for the rest of his life. I've kept his stuff in his room for the last year but I want to rent out the room again. I have contacted both of his parents to ask if they would mind taking it. They said to just throw it out and want nothing to do with him.

Since he's never getting out when can I sell or donate his stuff.

Update: I packed up his room took any pictures, letters etc. and contacted the prison about how I could send that to him. The rest I'm going to store in my garage. If I don't hear something in a year or two Ill just sell it or donate it.

Update: Thanks for the advice please stop commenting I no longer care about what you have to say the situation has been handled

Job offered a $6 pay raise to make me stay, after i put in my two weeks notice....then after a run around only gave me $2.5.

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 09:43 AM PDT

To keep it short. I'm from Ohio. I got a job offer making about $8 more on the hour. Took that to HR and asked if they would be willing to retain me. HR goes and talks to the President of the company... After 3 days of not getting back to me I go back to HR.

" well the offer to stay didn't meet the other and I thought you would be interested so I didn't bother to contact you."

I could see the logic in that but after a few more conversations with HR over they next few days I decided to stay. I like where I work its very close to my house and all that other fun stuff.

Two weeks go by and its payday, so my new rate should be starting on this check , I'm excited and proud of my self so I check my bank account right when I wake up .. and not what it should be …almost like a pervious check... check my pay stub and its my old rate...

Contact HR " I'm sorry I forgot to summit the paper work to the president , its my fault I mill make sure we retro pay you on your next check" - figure its not much I can do about it, so I just wait it out. Until last weeks paycheck... not the old pay rate but not the agreed one either. In stead of 6 more on the hour its just 2.5 ….

So back to HR this past Monday " Ok OP back to you.... I'm sorry I miss spoke about the amount. I have to go back to the president about the other amount on the hour, I know evaluation are coming up at the end of the year .. may ne he can make it up to you then"

At this point I am just at a lost for words, talk to some friends and they say there is a lot of this kinds stuff going on now. A job will offer to pay to make you stay then go back on their word and then the opportunity has passed by. Is there anything I can do ? It was a verbal agreement between myself and the head of HR nothing in writing besides a few text to my boss ( who I respect tremendously , and who wants me to stay ) of me sending him the new pay rate of what I thought I was going to be paying, and asking his thoughts on it.

California. Rent just went up 350%

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 07:36 AM PDT

I just got a notice from my landlord about a increase in rent. I new my landlord before he became my landlord. During the pandemic I became homeless and he allowed me to stay in his garage. After several months one of his tenants moved and he offered the room to me to rent for $200.00 month, I agreed and we signed a lease for one year. Me lease is up on Nov. 1st 2021. I received notice today Nov. 2nd 2021 on my door with a new lease to be signed but it came with a 350% ($200.00 - $700.00) increase.

My landlord rents the extra rooms he has in his home which he also resides in the same dwelling.

I know a landlord can ask whatever rent amount he wants but isn't there some sort of law that prevents such a drastic increase?

My doctor is a Covid denier- anything I can do to report him?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 08:17 AM PDT

Went to see a specialist (Neurologist) and while there he told me that my mask does nothing and asked why I was wearing one. He laughed and said "please don't tell me that you're vaccinated too."

He tried to scare me by saying we don't know what side effects the vaccine will have on is years from now. He started talking about the election and I just couldn't get out fast enough.

Is there any law or rules on standard of care where I can report him? Or is it not worth the time?

Edited to add: Not sure why the downvotes? I think it's pretty clear at this point that Covid vaccines are safe and masks work and that doctors should believe in science.

Is what my boss asking illegal?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 07:05 AM PDT

Hello, I am a bookkeeper, currently engaged in a quite heated argument with my bosses because I have been explicitly directed to categorize personal expenses (vape shops, bikinis, Netflix subscriptions, ancestry.com subscriptions, etc) as business expenses, with no intention of eventually counting it as an owner's distribution. My understanding is that this violates the law. I am particularly concerned because my company receives federal funds, so I think the penalties may be worse and the chance of an audit is higher.

    1) Am I correct that this practice is explicitly illegal? 2) If so, can someone link me to the section of the law it violates, or perhaps to an article laying out how it is illegal?

(Cross-posted to r/Bookkeeping because they removed it over there because I'm using a throwaway account)

Help a room was constructed in our house 30 years ago. Now being charged 30 years of building fees.

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 12:54 PM PDT

For reference, this is in California, I am only interested in California recommendations as we have one of the harshest permit law processes in the country.

I purchased a home in June which was advertised as a 2 bedroom 2 bathroom with 2 bonus rooms the total sq ft listed was 2800. Both of the "bonus rooms" had beds in them and it was presented to us by the realtor at the time that we would just need to "add a septic leach line for less than 2k" to make them bedrooms if we wanted. This was previously listed and sold as a 3bedroom 2 bathroom with 2800 sq ft.

In our appraisal, the mortgage lender and appraiser listed this as a 3 bedroom and the title company transferred to us a title for a 3 bedroom house.

We planned on living in this house and renting it when we are away for work, which is 1 week every month. When we went to submit the permit to be able to rent this on airbnb or the like, we were told we would not be able to rent it until we mitigated the bedroom situation. We were told that both rooms had been completed illegally and we would need to pay for permitting, engineering. inspection, and other fees in order to get approval for a "Build without a permit" project before being able to proceed. The department had screenshots of the home's real estate listing and had already built a case against us. I purchase the house less than 15 days prior to this conversation.

After researching with the tax assessor, these rooms in question were built at the time of construction of the house in 1988 but were not in fact listed as bedrooms, they were listed as additional family & storage rooms. One of the rooms is in the garage and I have no interest in this being a bedroom. The building department however has lost all blueprint records of the home and does not have a final of the permit, only an application. So we have no building department record of the final square footage of the house.

At this time, the head of the building department and the chief inspector signed a document stating they would acknowledge the 3rd bedroom as legal and the additional room in the garage would be treated as storage. I took the bed out, filled it with boxes, bikes skis etc and was fine with that. This document is signed by the head of the building department, and she assured us the matter was put to rest and this would be included in our record.

We then passed all but 1 inspection to be able to rent on airbnb. We also applied for the septic leach line addition permit.

The permit was not approved. For weeks we waited and then got a call from a code enforcement manager. She stated we would need to provide blueprints and then they would acknowledge the additional bedroom.

We provide this blueprint of the entire house. And are sent a message from someone we have never spoken to before stating we need provide a blueprint of what the house looked like before the illegal construction. This house was build 1 year after I was born. Additionally we will now need to pay for the permit fees, inspections, etc for building without a permit. I found the original builders widow, who lived in the house for a few years before they build another. She has stated everything in the house was there and completed as it currently exists at the time of construction in 1988.

I have asked if we can just get the department to acknowledge as a 2bedroom. Was told no because it is now acknowledged as completely illegal construction.

Additionally, this house has sold like this 4 times. 2nd owner was head of the building department in 1990s. All 3 additional owners have added things to the house. 2 decks, hvac, well, septic updates. This has never come up before now.

Just found out my spouse divorced me nearly a month ago.

    Posted: 01 Nov 2021 05:52 PM PDT

I just found out today that I'm divorced, and I'm honestly blown away.

We filed for Legal Separation in mid-2018, but agreed to remain legally married until mid-2022. But on October 7th, my spouse's lawyer filed a request to convert our Separation to a Dissolution. 3 business days later it was granted- all without my input or knowledge; I had no idea it happened. I found the Conversion Request copy in my mailbox one week after it was done.

(WHY didn't it arrive sooner, you ask? Oh, I'm sure it arrived whenever it was supposed to, but I wouldn't know because I was living in a nearby city doing rotations on a school internship when that Request arrived in the mail. My spouse knew this.)

I went to the local courthouse today to ask how to respond to the Request. That's how I found out my divorce was already a done deal, signed by the judge, and that I had been notified October 13th via email. I went home and checked all my email account folders-- I did not get a Notification (supposedly sent by a Sheriff).

Did I just get a fast one pulled on me, or is the way it went down all totally legal? I'd wanted to request something specific when we divorced, and now that opportunity is gone. (I'd also wanted to discuss the end of that part of our relationship at least, and that is gone too.) I'm feeling blindsided by all of it, but also wonder if I was done dirty by the system.

**Tbc, I knew the divorce was coming at some point in the near future, I just thought I'd have a chance to actually participate in it.

Pretty sure HR “lost” 20k 401k. Any potential recoup?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 08:34 AM PDT

Employee in AZ and parent company in IL if applicable. This post is on behalf of my wife.

Will fill out the timeline of what has been going on.

    1. I quit the company and was looking to roll over my 401k

    2. Company removed match even though I had been there longer than the vested time (3 years)

    3. While working with HR to get that re-instated, I got married. HR is miserable at paper work and, even though it was requested multiple times, never changed my name or new address.

    4. 401k company (Fidelity) now says that account is inactive and they have no record of 401k under the SSN. But they do have an account under my first and maiden name. They say to contact HR.

    5. As per post, HR has essentially quit replying to calls and emails. They have also deleted my company email address which the account was linked to.

Wondering what next steps are. My guess is that they inactivated the account and sent a check to the address on file. But since HR never updated it, that check probably went to an old address. Can't get confirmation on this though from anyone.

Thanks for any help you can give !

A hospital told me I wasn't pregnant when I am

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 11:46 AM PDT

I live in Wyoming and got a blood test done at a hospital that came back with negative results. I went home and took a home test and got a blaring positive. The next day I tried three more tests, making four total tests from 3 different brands all showing strong positive results. I scheduled an ultrasound and today found out that I am in fact pregnant, about 5 weeks. Although it is early the blood test should have been accurate.

I called the hospital to ask to see detailed test results (as in actual HCG levels at the time the blood sample was taken) and they won't provide them for "privacy reasons" even though I offered to come in in person with ID and that it's MY blood test!!! Its not uncommon for doctors to lie to women where I live to avoid abortions

Can I sue for malpractice or at least my results?

[NJ] Would I have any recourse for my job letting my health insurance lapse due to non payment?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 05:38 AM PDT

I work for a small company that is VERY bad at paying bills on time. They pay 40% of my health insurance, I pay 60%, but they are responsible for actually paying the insurance company.

I just found another 3 month old past due notice from the insurance company. This is not the first time this has happened, and I last caught it and got them to pay it literally just in time for a coworkers wife to give birth last year.

So my question, as a healthy young person who doesnt really use it, if I find myself in the hospital or needing medical care, and I find out after the fact that my health insurance is inactive because of their inability to pay the bill (despite me having paid the company for it) do I have any recourse? Would I have a case to sue my company for the medical bills?

Is it illegal to take the only copy of a lease and destroy it?

Trained Dog Ran Away During Delivery, Now Lost. Is There any Recourse?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 11:46 AM PDT

About a year ago my father (in CA) started the process to purchase a Labrador Retriever "started gun dog" that was bred and trained in PA.

This dog was purported to have these skills:

Your Started Gun Dog will have the following skill sets : * Exposed to birds and gunfire * Formal obedience of here heel and sit
    * Formal hold
    * A sound understanding of running long concept marks
    * Formal delivery to hand, on land and water * A strong desire for water retrieves
    * Comfortable in family settings * Exposed to travel and hunting situations
    * Comfortable around high stress environments
    * Quietly honors other dogs work

After these blocks have been completed we take it one step further by taking your started gun dog into the field .This training phase allows us to transition the dogs from training to hunting and gives your partner the extra experience they need before you take them home. * Approximately 10 to 12 Months of age

The dog was transported this last week by the carrier recommended by the breeder and arrived at my dad's house around 8PM Friday evening.

Upon arrival the dog was quite skittish in its kennel in the sprinter van that was being used to transport it. The delivery drivers instructed my father to sit with the dog for a few minutes and then to pick the dog up to remove her from the kennel. Upon doing so the dog bit my father on the hand (drawing blood), slipped her leash and collar and sprinted off down the road. The dog has not been seen since (he lives on a dead end canyon road with houses spread 1/4 mile or more apart.)

In the transportation service's contract they explicitly state that they are not responsible for run-aways and state that the dog should have a fitting collar and if there is any concern a full harness.

COLLARS/HARNESS: Make sure your dogs have SECURED collar/Harness and have this already on your dog before we get there. Ones that they cannot back out of it they pull. This is EXTREMELY important. If you have doubts, please have them in a harness in addition to the collar. Remember, we will be stopping at busy truck stops with loud noises and new places that they have never seen. We are not responsible if your dog backs out of his collar and runs away.

My father prior to shipping contacted the breeder via email and offered to purchase the recommended harness for transportation, he was told that there wouldn't be an issue and that they would provide a collar. The collar provided was on the tightest fit option when she slipped out of it.

My father is absolutely devastated by this as he lives alone and had been looking forward to this dog for over a year now. Aside from that though the cost of this dog plus the transportation is north of $10,000.

Is there any avenue for recourse here should the dog not show up? The delivery service has failed to return calls and the breeder to this point seems dismissive and keeps reassuring that the dog will turn up any day now.

Been living at my Dad's house since he passed away Jan 2019. Was unable to take over mortgage, so I basically "squatted" here for 2 1/2. Bank finally sold the house, and the people that bought it are telling me I don't have any rights and they can make me leave by the 4th. (Illinois)

    Posted: 01 Nov 2021 02:48 PM PDT

Edit-Thank you for all the replies. To the people that are angry with me, I am sorry. I'm not a lazy freeloader or anything like that. My situation is miles more complicated than I even posted here. Just trust me that I am doing my best. My *best* may not always be the right thing, but I really am trying.

This is a long, complicated situation so I am just going to make bullet points so it's easy to understand.

-Jan 2019 Father passed away. I was on the will to attempt to take over mortgage payments but was unable to due to finances/credit/etc

-Covid halted the sale process for a long while.

-I've been here 2 1/2 years without paying rent, mortgage or anything. I have paid water and internet under my fathers name, and paid electric that we got put into my sisters name (She does not live here)

-Early October I received court papers in the mail (not served, not signed for) from a lawyers office, detailing the sale of the house from the bank to the new owners. The only thing possibly remotely relevant is the date of sale (Oct 19th) and a line in all the court jargon that states "buyer will be entitled to possession 30 days after sale is confirmed by the court". That would make me think he doesn't have possession at least until Nov 18th?

-Because of the massive amount of mail we receive, I did not see these papers.

-Last Monday, a woman knocks on my door and tells me she bought the house. I talk to her and they tell me I have until Nov 9th to leave. I explain to her that is not nearly enough time to get everything out. She says she will send her agents to speak with me.

-Her agents come by that night, and tell me this woman and her family are in the buisness of house flipping. They assure me she is nice and will work with me on timeframe, finding us a new place, is flexible with rent, etc. basically they helped me calm down. Just told me to reach out to her for specifics.

-I don't hear from here for 5 days. She calls on Saturday and tell me that actually her brother bought the property because it is a family business and that we have to be out NOV 4TH!! I am very much panicking and explain why that would be almost impossible.

-She is kind but stern. She tells me I knew this was coming and should have had a plan (fair enough). She asks me if I have lawyer. I told her no. I never needed one in my life and just earlier this week her "agents" told me this would be a smooth transition so I didn't think I needed one.

-Her Mom was on this call too. They are kind, but frustrated at my lack of a plan. All I wanted was to know why I didn't get an actual eviction notice, and if I *really* had to be out by the 4th.

-This conversation was long and a lot was said. My anxiety was palpable and they kept telling me to stay calm, they aren't bad people, they will help etc. At one point the woman says "I dont know, maybe I can buy the house from my brother and then make an agreement with you". At another point they tell me I may have *no* rights because the mortgage wasn't under my name so I never owned the property to begin with. They were saying that once he has the papers in his hand, he could do whatever he wants *if* he wanted. They said I might need a lawyer to understand my rights better. They were trying to keep me calm by reassuring me they are good people, they won't put me out, they have tons of property and they can find us a place and work with us, etc. I just never could get any hard numbers or an address and a time to go look at any of the properties.

-In the end, the call dropped. I think they hung up because I was way too emotional and intense. This is just speculation on my part, but I was audibly anxious and intense during the call. They text back "sorry didn't mean to hang up. Relax. Find money. keep home." I reply basically saying "thank you for your patience, I just really would like some hard numbers and dates so I can make a plan. Maybe I take my anxiety meds and we can talk again later, or on Monday?" Again they reply simply with "find money. keep home." The problem is, I don't know HOW much money, WHEN they want it by, and this is all VERBAL. They also made it seem clear I would *not* really be speaking to the brother, the one that *actually* bought the house. They never said I wouldn't speak to him, but they informed me it was a family business. I just got a job, my kids are in school, and 3 days a week my fiance is with my sister all day helping my sister take care of our niece. This is a big house with multiple lifetimes worth of priceless stuff. NO WAY can I be gone in 4 days, let alone have ANYWHERE to go.

***My question is simply this-Can they really, truly make me leave on the 4th IF they really wanted to? Since we have no written agreement I am kinda freaking out. I tried reaching out to her today, but even her agents told me she often takes days to get back with people because she is so busy. I have never been to court, never been summoned and never been served. I have received no eviction notice. **\*

I have a family of 4 and I just got a job today actually, but it's minimum wage. I just wanna know my rights, if I have any at all. I'm not angry with them at all. They are just conducting their business and I respect that. I'm just scared of not knowing what will happen. Thank you in advance!

    Adoption Records/Family Law

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 06:11 AM PDT

Short story: My dad was adopted as a baby and was never able to find out who his bio mom was. My dad passed away several years ago. I submitted a request to the Indiana State Dept. for his adoption and birth records, and wrote a letter saying that it was not my intention to ask for anything from anyone, just wanted to find out his history for medical purposes. They sent me his live birth record & adoption record and a letter saying that any information is only to be released to me. Well, the birth record has the bio mother's name and I did some searching, but couldn't find anything. I shared it with my sister, but she's very aloof. I forgot that I never showed my (half) brother, and so I did, and he was able to find the woman and her husband, their kids, and their grandkids online through some deep searching. However, he is wanting to reach out to them very badly, but I have the final say as I'm the one with the records.

Question: is it illegal to reach out to these people? The adoption was private, which I know is designed to protect the mother. However, both the biological parents and my dad are deceased, so is there any protection in place that would legally prohibit us from contacting them? I told the state I would only use the records for medical purposes, so I don't want to get in "trouble" for reaching out. Honestly, not even sure if this makes any sense, it's kind of a crazy moment knowing part of my family history I've never known. Any help would be great.

NY Thruway Double Charged Me And It Has Gone To Collections

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 11:49 AM PDT

I live in Pennsylvania and have a PA EZ-Pass which I used Christmas 2020 traveling from exit 61 to 24. I recently recivieved a bill from a third party collection company stating I owe $53 ($2.71 toll and $50 fee). I must have missed the NYS Thruway letters. I have submitted a dispute, sending my ezpass statement proving I paid that specific toll at the time and date listed, and the toll by mail toll and fee were charged in error. The third party (PHH) is not accepting this.

What are my options? I have very good credit, over 800, and I don't want this to wreck it. I also don't want to pay $53 because of an error with the new overhead ezpass

Car shop didn't confirm what I needed for my vehicle, put in a part not required, and now wants me to pay.

    Apologies for formatting, on mobile.

I'm in Nebraska, not sure what flair to put on this, but I want to know if this is legal.

About a month ago, I got my car towed into a local shop to be diagnosed and fixed. I told the car shop I wasn't sure what was wrong, but that my dad and the security person who came to help get my car into a parking spot (college campus) thought that, based off how my car was acting, that it might need a fuel pump or fuel filter replaced. Wasn't sure.

Week and a half later, car gets towed to the shop on a Wednesday. Didn't hear anything back by Friday, went to call, and the shop was closed. I call back Monday, they tell me they replaced the fuel pump and that I need a PMC. (Note, I know zip about cars, this is my first one.) I asked if the fuel pump was needed, and they said no, but that's what had been written down so they did it.

This was never confirmed with me, and when I called to ask how this happened, I was told the receptionist writes down what the clients say and they do it, and that's it. They never actually called to confirm that needed done, and now they're telling me I have to pay the 400 for the fuel pump on top of the 500 for the tow and PMC. Can I refuse to pay for something I didn't authorize? There's no signatures on anything authorizing it, and they never confirmed it with me.

I'm a 22 year old college student who knows jack about cars and I've been relying on my dad who is an hour and a half away and cannot be here to help me in person.

My apartment complex keeps trying to overcharge me

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 01:26 PM PDT

Hi there. This is my first time posting so sorry for any formatting issues.

My partner and I just bought a house so we needed to break our lease early for our apartment.

Something to note is that our apartment complex was bought out by a new company AFTER we had already renewed for another year so we are under contract with the previous owners not the current ones.

In our contract to break our lease we have to give a 60 day notice, pay those last two months of rent/utilities and a reletting fee. We have discussed this with them on multiple occasions.

They have charged us thousands of dollars three times in the past month and a half. We keep calling and getting it settled and they "fix it" but then we have the same problem again.

I just want to know if there is anything legal we can do about this. Are they breaching contract? Any advice helps!

    NOTE: we are in Texas

Expectations from employer while at home sick

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 11:51 AM PDT

In short, a "friend" is home sick with covid. They work in a sort of sales industry and they are salary plus commission. Basically, they don't get paid for all of this time missed since they won't be processing deals.

Since testing positive, and unable to return to the workplace, some prior deals were still open, and might have had unresolved issues, or uncollected monies.

Their boss is now contacting them frequently, and in a very unprofessional tone of anger/ accusation, all while friend can't do anything to rectify the issue. It's as if their boss is simply calling to reprimand them, while they are literally in bed with a fever, feeling like a truck ran them over.

Friend is now worried that company is mad that they can't work for 10 days, and are trying to find cause to terminate employment.

Is this legal? (A- contacting an employee who is out sick concerning work related issues..... &B) would this be wrongful termination?
