Is it common for smaller firms to hold a % of salary until busy season?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2021 03:21 PM PDT

Right before my first pay, my new firm let me know that 10% of my salary is paid out at busy season. There was no mention of this during the hiring process, and I've never heard of a salary being allocated this way. I've already been deceived about remote work and hours required, and now this happens. The writing is on the wall, huh?

Starting out in PA virtually sucks big time

    Posted: 01 Nov 2021 06:32 PM PDT

All that "steep learning curve" and "drinking from a fire hose" still happens but now you are just doing it silently in your room all by yourself.

Yea the seniors are available via chat and calls but once you are working on your tasks, you are cut off from your team. It's just such an isolating experience for a first year who is wondering half the time if I am doing things right. No visual or social cues from your senior and other team members. You aren't sure if the engagement is going well or it's taking a dive. You can't tell if people are happy or stressed. You rarely interact with anyone other than your direct senior. You can't overhear conversations and pick things up to understand the bigger picture.

And I just... work. I turn on the computer. Stare at excel. Stare at the seniors face on my computer. Stare at chat messages at the bottom right. All the interaction is through the screen and only about work.

And it sucks even more if you live by yourself. I feel like I'm in some solitary confinement.

Oh and also, the work is really fucking boring. I mean like. Really. Fucking. Boring. I fucking hate combing through excel spreadsheets with thousands of rows just so I can agree some random numbers to one another.

/End Rant from a first year who feels like they made a wrong career choice.

When the staff levels and morale start dropping

Industry and government accountants of r/Accounting, are you bored? Or is that a lie perpetuated by public practice?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2021 11:07 AM PDT

All the time I hear in public practice that "oh you'll be bored in industry", that it's the same repetitive work over and over again. That you're not likely to feel challenged and that the variety of work available in public practice does not have an equivalent in industry. Is this a lie perpetuated by public practice firms? Perhaps in a desperate attempt to retain staff?

So tell me, are you bored, or is that a complete lie?

3 months into the job as an A1 and got PIP.

    Posted: 01 Nov 2021 02:50 AM PDT

Im devastated ngl, thought i did my best and it wasn't enough. Im so dumb.

Joined Big4 in August and didn't managed to secure confirmation after probation due to two factors, Technical Capabilities and Whole Leadership. these two snapshot's scores were 2/3.

Technical Capabilities: Holy hell, i find it super hard trying to understand the controls for banks. i genuinely thought that i ask too much questions to my seniors and low-key think they are bit annoyed with it. However, that's not the case.

Whole leadership: i only found out that i am responsible for the end to end process in completing controls during my confirmation discussion with my manager, that includes emailing clients for documents. before this, apart from completing controls, any additional document required, i will discuss with my seniors and they will send the email.

next, wow, theres a lot of documents that needs to be sighted, lots of stuff that needs to do and that made me lost. jotted down notes but sometimes i forgot some things and Assistant Manager didn't like it.

Lesson learned and I acknowledged my mistake.

    Time to improve.

Just wanted to vent, thanks for listening.

Anyone else at this point in their accounting career?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2021 03:14 AM PDT

Did my time in Big 4 audit and basically survived on adrenaline and the fact that I was young and full of energy. Now I've basically made it into one of the most desirable companies in my city in financial accounting with a good salary and benefits. If I stick around I can make a good career. But I find I'm going home every day absolutely hating work and dreading coming in every day. I look at management and couldn't think of anything worse. All that stress and pressure looks awful. The question I have been asking myself is "what's next? Is this really it?" I've been thinking hard for months what I can do with my skill set instead, but I'm drawing blanks. Anyone in or been in this situation? Would love to hear your stories and/or advice.

Can someone who currently does financial reporting please provide an insight into what the role entails? What do you like about it and what do you dislike about it? Currently in PA and trying to switch to private. Looking for ways to move into private. Thanks!

    Switching from education to accounting

    Posted: 01 Nov 2021 06:50 PM PDT

I'm currently a math teacher wanting to switch careers. I've applied to a masters in accounting program and plan to go back to school while I teach.

Since my bachelor's is in education, and I will only spend two years studying accounting, will I have trouble finding a decent job? Will candidates with a bachelors degree be considered before me? Or will having a master's open up more opportunities?

What's your favorite way to destress after dealing with a shitty teacher?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2021 06:31 PM PDT

I can't drink, which is what all of my friends are suggesting right now.

I'm an accountant; I've been in this field for a few years and have a BA so I know my stuff. Just got into an argument with one of my teachers earlier because for the third time, they've given me a D on an assignment even though they said the content was correct. The reason? "I'm allowed to make my own rules beyond the rubric and assignment instructions established by the school." Fuck me, I just want to finish this damn class so I can get my license. Screw teachers who think understanding the material isn't enough for a passing grade! Being a teacher doesn't mean beating students down just so you can feel like the smartest person in the room!

Not sure when or if i should switch public firms?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2021 08:05 PM PDT

CPA with 4 years of exp of public accounting in a huge city and currently a senior at a mid sized firm. I have a hybrid role doing tax and audit which is what I prefer.

In all honesty, I love my firm and team/ what I do. I was thinking of switching to a new company bc i want a higher salary but part of me already feels I make more than others.

I'm already working with a recruiter to find a diff public company that can pay me 105-110K. She already found me three but it seems they are smaller which isn't really what I'm looking for.

I'm just confused on what I should do. Part of me wants to be greedy and move to a new job for more money but part of me feels I already make a lot for my level and I love my firm anyways.

Pretty sure I will get a raise to make $100k+ next September but feels stupid to wait a year when I bump my salary up faster w a new job.

Yeah, idk what my question is tbh. I just don't know what to do right now! 😂 I think part of me is wondering if I should job hop since I know seniors are definitely in demand rn.

Advice needed - Pivot from B4 Audit to PE fund accounting

    Posted: 01 Nov 2021 07:22 PM PDT

I'm currently an A2 in B4 Audit in the insurance industry. After speaking to recruiters I made my way to potentially have an offer as a fund accountant at a boutique PE firm. The total comp increase is expected to be +35% with what seems to be an amazing work life balance.

I don't know if I'm leaving B4 too early and selling myself short. I also am wondering if I should keep interviewing at bigger funds after this busy season or stay with the firm and move internally to Deals Advisory. My only concern with Deals Advisory is the lack of exit opportunities (so I've been told).

    Any advice is welcome.

Has anyone successfully landed a lucrative position with just their Associate's or Bachelor's in Accounting without taking the CPA?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2021 09:30 PM PDT

I'm in my first semester in CC and leaning towards accounting as I am an introvert and like to work independently. Decent with math, I've always liked it. I've seen conflicting reports on the CPA. Do employers really care if you're certified for certain positions? Some accountants say as long as you've taken the credits required to qualify for taking the CPA, that's all an employer needs.

I suppose it would depend which type of accounting I'm looking to do? Maybe?

I'm really new to ALL of this so please be kind, I don't know much yet. Just trying to figure out time commitments and such.
