Personal Finance Can't afford to expense business trip + job won't pay for dog's boarding

Can't afford to expense business trip + job won't pay for dog's boarding

    Posted: 28 Oct 2021 07:39 AM PDT

So, a bit of a terrible situation. I'm in a position that pays well, at a great company, but recent events have made it so that I've been living paycheck to paycheck. I've been booked to go on a business trip, but I've realized that I can't afford it.

My dad died suddenly two months ago, leaving me as his only adult child (age 24) to manage his funeral expenses, probate expenses, and guardianship over my little brother (age 16). I've also had to pay for my mother's living expenses and I'm in a bit of a lengthy legal issue as my dad died intestate. So storage fees, legal fees, paying for the insurance on his cars, etc. I've been taking care of my boyfriend's dog while he's in basic military training, and to go on this business trip, it'll take about $300+ to pay for her lodging and there are travel fees (that my job has made clear they won't cover) I'll have to incur that I just don't have. I know it's not much money exactly, but it's just not something I can justify as I scrape my bank account.

Also, my boyfriend can't send me any money because BMT won't allow him to communicate with the outside world.

I didn't realize how expensive this trip was going to be, and now with guardianship proceedings starting out of nowhere, I just can't come up with the scratch. The trip is a week out and I would feel awful about canceling.

Any advice you can offer would be much appreciated.

EDIT: Thank you everyone for your responses. It makes sense that companies don't cover dog boarding – I realize I made some major missteps during such a confusing and stressful time, and it's certainly not their responsibility to cover for those mistakes. There's a lot I'm just now learning about estate planning and guardianship and the like. I will do my best to cancel the trip.

EDIT2: My mother (who lives in Detroit, MI) is not my brother's mom - there is tension between the families and my mom is not an option for his care. He is also autistic and his own mother is kind of ill, which is why we're going through guardianship proceedings in the case she cannot care for him. I would love to leave the puppy with him, but he cannot be left alone due to the severity of his autism. Thank you everyone who suggested this - I agree it would be the best option, but the situation is kind of unusual.

EDIT3: When I say there are travel fees I can't cover, I mean upfront. I just don't have the money to do so, and can't wait for two weeks to a month to be reimbursed.I have too much to cover and will need to wait until the next few paychecks to catch up. Just looking for advice to approach employer, please do not DM me with rude or off topic messages.

EDIT4: Just got off the phone with my boss, who is really so understanding and helpful (he also very recently lost his mother, so he's that much more understanding), and I was able to cancel my trip. They're going to find a replacement. There has been a weight lifted and I feel so much better. Thank you everyone for talking me through it.

Found some old CDs my parents made for me in some personal papers. Couldn't find them in unclaimed property listings. What should I do? Am I out of luck?

    Posted: 28 Oct 2021 02:53 PM PDT

So my dad and I were going through some old papers. Found some CDs from a bank that was bought out by another bank. Called said bank, and after some transfers, they told me to check unclaimed property websites for the state we lived in at the time. I checked for property under mine and my parents' names, and found nothing. No indication these CDs are unclaimed, yet I still have the papers for them. Is there a way to go about finding some more information, or do I just accept I don't get this money?

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Almost fell for a scam today: Got a call that my power was going to be turned off in 30-45 minutes

    Posted: 27 Oct 2021 10:46 AM PDT

So now that I'm stepped away from it, it seems outstandingly obvious, but wow they really get that sense of urgency working for them. "Huh, I did just get a bill recently, is autopay not working?" "Huh, I did just turn on my heat, is it an unusual amount of power tripping something?" (I'm an electrician, I should know better.)

I gave them my name and most of my address before I started wondering: "wait, shouldn't they KNOW my address?" So I asked them what company they worked for, and they gave the name of my power company. I asked if they had a phone number I could call them back at (I know, you don't actually use the phone number they give you) and he immediately hung up.

Well, anyway, if I don't respond to comments it's because they shut off my power.

My job has been reporting my income under the wrong SSN for a year now and it's affecting many areas of my financial health. I need advice.

    Posted: 28 Oct 2021 09:17 AM PDT

I work at private resort for the super wealthy in rural Montana. It's a seasonal job, so we are at work from June through September, and then come back December through April. This means that twice a year I go on to job attached unemployment. I have worked for my current employer for 3 years now. They have changed payroll companies more times than I can count, and I think that's how this error got started.

Somehow, in October of 2020, my job started reporting my income under the wrong social security number. Nobody caught it. HR and payroll didn't catch it, I didn't catch it, H&R block didn't catch it when I did my taxes, etc.

When I applied for unemployment at the end of September this year 2021, I got denied for not having a history of wages in the last year in my state. Obviously I had worked the whole year so I was really confused. I got to the bottom of it and found out the SSN was wrong. I thought it was just going to be a matter of my job getting a hold of unemployment and letting them know that all was good. I was wrong.

The last two offseasons, from October 17th 2020 to November 28th 2020 and then again from April 24th 2021 to June 12th 2021, I had been collecting unemployment. I didn't realize that there was a problem already during those dates, because the federal government had pushed through unemployment benefits for people even if they weren't eligible through job attachment or through state wages (because of the pandemic). So the Feds just used my previous financial data and continued my benefits through those periods for the same amount that I've always received. I never got any kind of notification that I was being switched from regular job attached state unemployment to this federal coronavirus pandemic unemployment fund. But that's why the money kept coming. And because the money kept coming, I had no reason to think that there was any problem at all.

Flash forward to the present. I call my job, my job calls unemployment, they told me that everything is taken care of. But it's not. Now that my job has gone in and retroactively added wage information for the last year, it has negated my eligibility for the receipt of the pandemic funds from The above stated dates. So now the federal government thinks that I owe them $9,235, which they are expecting me to pay back, And will garnish any unemployment wages I receive in the future until it is fulfilled.

They're saying that because I am making more money now than I used to, my benefit amount has increased from $457 a week to $618, but because I have such a big debt, they're going to confiscate 50% of that money each week, bringing my benefit amount down to $388 until the $9,235 is paid back.

But I don't owe this money. I was gainfully employed the entire time. And I can't live off of $388 a week. Additionally, now it looks like I committed wage fraud. This could affect my eligibility in the future. I have an unemployment fund that my money is pulled from, based on the wages that I earned throughout the season, and I have never fully depleted it. I have always enjoyed a good cushion of about $3k in that fund. So due to this clerical error on someone else's part, my unemployment fund has been completely depleted and no longer has that healthy cushion, additionally I look like a criminal, I'm going to lose half of my wages for the entire offseason, and -I didn't realize this until recently- I got declined for two credit cards because they couldn't verify my income, which tanked my score by almost 50 points.

Without income, my credit is all I have right now. Unemployment keeps telling me that I'm going to start getting paid every week, but every week No payment comes. Payday was supposed to be today again. No money, again.

No one at my job seems to be taking this seriously. I live in a very expensive place, usually only super wealthy people live here. But I live here because of work. So I'm bleeding money out of pocket from my savings just trying to stay afloat right now waiting for anybody to figure this out. Juggling credit cards. And my credit score has suffered. I want to buy a house, that's what I've been saving for, and now I have these marks against me that even if my job sorts out my financial situation, are going to stay on my credit for like 2 years. I don't think that's fair. I haven't done anything wrong here, but I'm the only one who is facing consequences. Not to mention that the government thinks that I owe them almost all of my savings!

I don't know if my taxes are correct. I don't even know how to figure that out. And if they're not correct I don't even know what to do about it.

The place that I live is super duper rural. We don't even have postal service here, which has exacerbated this issue because I'm not receiving my mail in a timely fashion. I have a PO box in the next county over, but it's like a 72 mile round trip. My car needs to go in the shop, it has a check engine light on and it's guzzling gas. But of course, I can't bring my car to the shop because I don't have any income right now. So I can't afford to drive out and check my mail every single day, I've been checking it once a week. But honestly I haven't received any helpful correspondence from my state unemployment or my job.

Please help, I'm so lost, I don't know what to do and my money is running out. I'm sorry if this is flared incorrectly; I Don't even know how to categorize this ridiculous problem.

ETA: This problem has been ongoing now for almost a month without resolution

Should I leave my job for better pay?

    Posted: 28 Oct 2021 05:34 AM PDT

I love the company I work for as it has great benefits and my coworkers are very nice. I just don't get paid enough for my role though. I started this job right out college a few years making $41K and about 11 months into it, a coworker levels above me quit and trained me in two days to do their job. This occurred around my 1st annual review, where my old manager told me I would not receive a raise. My old manager let me take over the coworkers role while I continued the role I was hired to do, but did put in paperwork to HR for a promotion. HR, then offered me a lateral promotion with a very small raise to increase my salary to $45K with no negotiation and a title change.
I accepted the offer because I wanted to build my resume and looked at it as an opportunity to learn more about my company & to gain experience.

Around the same time I received the lateral promotion, my company merged with another (my company took over the other) and my old manager went to another department, so my team got a new manager. Last year at my annual review with my new manager when I asked for a raise, they said they have no control over giving me a raise as HR handles raises and promotions. They also told me they have no idea what I make nor did they want to know. There seems to be some miscommunication on how my company pays because when I was hired I was told that my old manager offered a certain dollar amount, but my new manager said they don't have control over as HR handles pay.

Now after working here for 3 years, I have really don't see any career growth available for my role at all. I've never really had a promotion as I view that "lateral" promotion just as a little bonus and a way for the company to not have to hire someone else to pay them what my previous coworker was making of $80K. I really only decided to work here to gain work experience after graduating college a few years ago. Since then I have started my Master's.

I've recently started looking into other companies and I have interviews lined up with other companies that said it would be no problem offering my desired range of $60-$65K! Should I leave my company for more $? I would be making 30% more.

If an immediate family member in your house helps you pay your mortgage each month, do you have to pay income tax on the money they are giving you?

    Posted: 28 Oct 2021 06:37 PM PDT

The specific situation is that my mother-in-law wants to move in with us and help us with the mortgage, does this count as collecting rent? It wouldn't be a full market rate rent payment and would go directly to the mortgage, do we have to pay income tax for the money she contributes?

Any suggestion when I resign but stay open for contracting work from current company?

    Posted: 28 Oct 2021 05:50 PM PDT

I am resigning, but I'd like to say in the letter that I am open and very willing to accept contract consultant (charge hourly) work in the future should they need. What should I say and not to say?

A little background. It's a regulated engineering position in California. All of the team members but me are oversea, but the headquarter is in the US and they will definitely need someone here just in case. After I leave, there will be no one else can do the job any where close to what I can because I was the very first one when the project started 5 years ago (only one other person might help, but the person knows nothing and can only help with step by step instruction). I don't think it's possible find hire one and pick it up within 4 months.

There was a massive management layoff this year, to a point where no one in the management has any idea about the project, only the engineer team (oversea) knows. I will be sending my resignation letter to a manager who was assigned to pick up the project from middle of nowhere. So I think it's necessary for me to emphasize my role and why the team will need me.

The team oversea are in different timezone, so I don't have to worry too much about working as consultant for them while working full time for the new company (mostly remote). I can work at night time or weekend (only if I get reasonably paid)

That said, I think I have some advantage making them feel they need me, but I also don't want to brag about it.

    To simplify, my questions are:

    • should I keep this simply and just add one line like "I will be available should the company need a consultant" (in a fancier wording)? Or should I try to make it looks like I really want it.
    • should I explain why the team will definitely need me and kind of say "based on why I know, it will be very hard to not consulting me when things happen"?
    • hourly rate. I will be paid roughly 80/h pretax in new position and 55/h currently(both salary job). I know that in the industry, 1099 workers get paid roughly 50% more than W2. Should I ask them 150% of 55h or 150% of 80/h? I'd say 80 because that's how much I worth, but 55 is more reasonable from the company point of view.
    • anything else I should keep an eye on before leaving?

    Thanks.

    27.4% APR on car loan

    Posted: 28 Oct 2021 03:23 PM PDT

Yeh. I've got it worse than anyone I've ever seen. Walked out the dealership with a car and 27% APR. Yep... boy was I dumb. So I assume I still am. Anyways, WHAT DO I DO?? Is there any bank that's going to refinance me?? I'm only early 600s in credit, 20 years old. From my understanding, and I'll asssume I understand wrong, my (rounded) $15000 car purchase is $30000 total if I paid it off as little as possible, right? Not like I would! I'm just trying to understand the basics. So who would even possibly refinance me? I make about 3k monthly. Car is 2011, with about 100k miles. I apologize if I left out any info, but ask and I'll answer. Sorry for bad quality. I'm on mobile.

Selling house, what to do with equity?

    Posted: 28 Oct 2021 12:51 PM PDT

I recently received a job offer that will take me out of my current city. It's a place I've wanted to move to for awhile, so it's well worth it with that fact alone. However, it is also netting me an additional $10k a year. Selling my home will get me about $120k after all fees are paid. I have about $30k in credit card debt, and another $15k on cars. Would it be best to pay off the cards and loans and then use the remainder as a down payment on a new place, or is there another option that I'm not aware of? I'm just a little lost over it. I've never had more than $5k at my disposal, so this amount of money is daunting to me, and I want to handle it right. Thanks!

Why is it rude/not appropriate to ask about salaries and benefits?

    Posted: 28 Oct 2021 04:36 PM PDT

I am a soon to be graduate student, and have questions about salaries, benefits, time off, contributions and all that jazz. I want to ask these questions to peers in my field, but am worried that I will come off as disrespectful. I am looking to set up a relaxed meeting with other students to discuss these topics, will it come off as inappropriate to the university department (social work)? It just seems like other students have these thoughts, but career services department never seems to cover these "touchy" subjects. What are your thoughts around this norm? and do you think a meeting like what I described would be well received?

is there a historical stock/mutual fund simulator i can play with?

    Posted: 28 Oct 2021 05:51 PM PDT

i've started to take my retirement account seriously. i've googled around some basic mutual fund/ETC recommendations that i've seen come up on some threads here. i have some basic ideas.

what i now wish i could do, was put some starting numbers in and see what would have happened, going back 30 years ago. just, if i could go back to like 1980, and see how these things would have performed if i "bought them and let them sit" for those periods of time, what the best distributions might have been.

i realize i'm going to be limited because funds and companies didnt exist back then. so maybe i can only go back to the year 2000 or something, but, does anything like this exist?

i just put in 100,000 as a starting value. i say it buys VXUS, VFIAX and maybe BND, then let it sit for 15 years.

    see what that gets

second scenario is i rebalance accounts every year.

    see what that gets

then i play around with how much US vs international has

    see what that gets

    etc.

all using known historical data. does this exist as a simple webpage?

What am I missing about the TSP in NY?

    Posted: 28 Oct 2021 06:25 PM PDT

I know that the TSP in NYS is treated as a pension for FERS retirees even though it operates like a 401k, so there's no local, state and city tax on traditional withdrawals.

But contributing to Roth is after tax so those taxes DO apply on the way in.

So what's the point in contributing to Roth? It seems like with traditional, you don't get taxed at all going in, and on the way out you pay federal tax only. With Roth you get taxed federal, state, city and local, and nothing on the way out. Traditional is clearly better than Roth, right?

    What am I missing?

Can’t tell if my Employer’s 401k is bad or not.

    Posted: 28 Oct 2021 04:44 PM PDT

Hi all. I've learned a lot from this sub over the years, so first and foremost, thank you!

I currently contribute 6% to my 401k. I also max out my Vanguard Roth IRA every year for the past couple of years.

Compared to my previous employer, the 401k plan my current employer offers is mediocre.

    1. There is no employer match until 2 years of employment have passed. That will be this coming March.

    2. Not the best investment lineup.

I keep feeling there are better ways to invest the money, but I don't fully understand the plan. Would you help me get a clear picture of what kind of plan I'm dealing with?

    Employer Contributions -Discretionary Match

The plan provides for a match of 25% of deferrals up to 6% of compensation. Profit Sharing

    Vested as follows: 0-2 years: 0% 2-3 years: 25% 3-4 years: 50% 4-5 years: 75% 5+ years: 100%

Any and all advice is much appreciated!

23 year old needing a new (used) car. What should I do?

    Posted: 28 Oct 2021 07:50 PM PDT

My old car broke down (2008 GMC Envoy), and fixing the engine is gonna run me about $1400. It wasn't too reliable and I've decided to get something else instead of investing anymore money into it. I have roughly 1k as a downpayment for financing a used vehicle.

I've been trying to buy within the 10-12k range, and keep my monthly car payments around the $300 price range. I've been having issues financing too because I've only worked this job for around 1 month and missed a couple days which is making my paystub not accurately reflect what I actually make if I had showed up to work each day.

I need a car and don't know what to do. I thought I had one today: 2014 Toyota, low miles, within my price range, drove well, but it was making a noise and unfortunately they couldn't fix it so I didn't get it.

I need a car. I need a reliable ride to work. Financing would be a good way to build credit as well, but I don't feel comfortable getting a car that's waaaay out of my budget.

I don't know what to do at this point.

Girlfriend received IRS notice that she owes $37k from 2019

    Posted: 28 Oct 2021 04:46 PM PDT

Edit: This was a letter and looks pretty official. The $125k check is news to her.

IRS states it's from unreported income from a $125k check from Zions Bank Corporation. She looked at her tax return from that year and she reported both her income from her regular job, as well as income from side jobs as a photographer. What steps can we take to resolve or investigate this? She's on the phone with the IRS and I've asked that she take a look at her credit report for any apparent identity theft. Thanks for your time.

    $15k Pension inheritance

    Posted: 28 Oct 2021 07:07 PM PDT

My father passed away, he had $94k in a pension. It is being divided between me & my 5 siblings leaving us with a little over $15k each. This is taxable, from what I read we can take a lump sum (20% taken for taxes & 10% for being under 59.5y/o), we can roll it over to an eligible retirement account, or split it between the two options. From what I'm calculating, if my siblings and I take the lump sum, we will be left with $10,795, most of them do not have retirement accounts. I personally only have a Roth IRA, which means some of the money will be taxed before I can add it to my Roth IRA, but it also leaves me with the issue of only being able to contribute $6k annually.

I don't know what to do with this money. It is not a large amount however, I do not want to fork over 30% to the government. I also have debts, but I cannot see myself giving them almost $5k to take out this lump sum.

    Any advice?

    Investing with Charles Schwab?

Hi, I'm an older individual who unfortunately does not know very much about investing.

I have recently invested in a Roth IRA called Vanguard 500 Index Admir (VFIAX) and a Individual Mutual Funds account called Berkshire Focus (BFOCX) with an App called Charles Schwab.

They seem to be making good and stable gains in the past several months but would like to know if this is too good to be true and/or if there's any catch.

My car engine has apparently died/blown up what are the next steps I should do?

    Posted: 28 Oct 2021 06:46 PM PDT

So two days ago my car randomly started sputtering, wouldn't go over 40 mph, and the check engine light kept flashing. I took it in to a place that I feel is pretty trustworthy I know them on the first name bases and they seem pretty nice, after they remove the spark plugs I was told that they were damage and after a compression test they deemed my engine unsavable. I can now either get a rebuilt one or a brand new one for my 2017 Ford Escape 4wd. The rebuilt one with labor will I'm guessing cost 5k and the new one will cost 10k. I bought the car out right cash for 17k. I also need to get my shock done soon which will cost almost 2k. Will this car market I really don't want to get an overprice car, nor do I want to deal with car payments. How ever I have already put a lot of money in and will have to continue doing so after the engine is fix. What should I do? Also I believe that the new engine will be under warranty.

I work in the biotech (pharma manufacturing) and my company has recently seen a lot of turnover due to higher pay, sign on bonuses, and quick and easy hiring in the field the past year.

I have a pretty good position at the company but was considering exploring opportunities due to the huge amount of open positions in the field and opportunity to diversify my skill set.

Yesterday, my job offered me a retention bonus of ~11% of my salary paid over two years in two payments (5.5% a year).

I would have to pay it back if I left the company, but if I stay for at least 1 year, I can keep the first payment.

After doing some reading, I'm conflicted. It seems that this is a relatively low retention bonus considering the time frame of two years. I was planning to decline it, but I realized that even if I have to pay it back, it wouldn't be a crippling blow as the amount isn't huge. Does it make sense to take it? TIA

I think I'm being scamed and idk what to do

Hello, I think I'm being scammed by the payment provider and idk how to stop the ach payments.

    Backstory:

I was going to join the AF, but months later due to eye surgery I can't join. While that happen I don't remeber when, but according to the payment providers website, I became a member on 6/4/21 to a gym with my friend.

Time goes by and I stopped going and got a charge of $150 on August 10th that went through on August 11th. I looked at and went "Oh no, let me try and cancel it and maybe get a refund since I don't go to the gym." I went to check it out and apparently this gym is part of a "club" thing under a company called ABCfitness. In August, I called ABC number and they told me I had to go through the club to cancel the account. I went to the club's website me to email them so I did.

Weeks later and I got no response, so I assumed I was out $150 and they automatically canceled my account. Sept 10th came...charged another $150....now I'm pissed. I called the gym and told me the story and told me to email them again with the last email and show a picture of both bank transactions. Weeks later and I decided to call the gym again, since I still havn't got an email back about canceling my account and was told I would get refunded.

    Now It gets crazy

I go back to the gym's website and I noticed theres a new email that directs me to email ABCfitness. Okay so the email back in September is dead and no one ureses it. I decided to call the number of customer support, since now it says call them or email them. I'm not emailing anyone anymore if they didn't respond the first time. I called and its a robot lady and was able to talk to a customer service rep, but was also was told I could go to MyiClubOnline to freeze or cancel my account.

Now I'm on the phone with the ABC rep, they Indian/aren't American with their accent so I'm assuming its an international call center that ABCfitness uses, told them my story and they like why you want to cancel your membership. I'm like I go to school and work alot and its a waste of money. He goes okay, but we can't cancel your membership since your under contract and would need a medical physicist to say your injured from a disease, type of injury or exc that makes you unfit to cancel/freeze your membership. I was like wtf and he said I can email them to stop the ach payments. I ended the phone call after saying thank you.

I then navigated to MyiClubOnline and tried to sign up and had to call them again, since they have wrong last name on file by one later. After logging in there's no option to cancel your membership or freeze it. Its done all through email. I then went to check out the contract document, but theres nothing on the account file. Did they lie that I was on contract? I decided to change my payment method to a debit card with no money and locked it cause I guess I'll default on it, since it doesn't impact my credit cause its labeled as an Installment payment.

I then called the gym and asked to speak someone incharge and of course they don't have access to members accounts. I told about how they said i was under contract and want to cancel my membership. He took my name and number and said he would give it to the higher ups of the gym.

What the hell is happening here and has anyone heard of this problem and bullshit type contact? Could I call my bank and tell them my story to get refunded for the last two months and have them investigate for fraud? (Note the MyiClubOnline shows I havn't been to the gym in months). I just people to make sure what company they sign up for that is not name brand like 24hr fitness.
