I caused damage to a parking garage sensor in my apartment building - Mgmt is now asking for my car insurance to cover $11.2k bill. Is this right?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2021 04:34 PM PDT

    Greetings,

My apartment building's indoor parking garage parking spot is very tricky to get into, and is constantly filled with orange cones and toolboxes for some reason — it's right next to the garage door and entrance. Partly because of this obstruction, I accidentally clipped the wall next to my parking spot while driving into it, which caused damage to the garage door sensor and related wiring.

The building initially told me that they were only going to charge for the sensor and sensor repair costs. The management company is now asking for my car insurance information, to make a claim for $11,200 worth of the charges, which are the following:

    • the initial service call and troubleshooting ($2,900)
    • the initial replacement of sensor ($1,500)
    • the initial replacement of wiring ($1,400)
    • additional repairs (because repairs were not done right the first time) ($1,400)
    • security for the stuck-open garage door ($4,000)

Is the building supposed to be charging my auto insurance for this? Doesn't the management company have its own insurance? Are tenants typically liable in this type of situation?

    Thank you for any information!

    Another Walmart fender bender

    Posted: 29 Oct 2021 04:42 PM PDT

My wife just backed out of her space and while she was putting the car in drive to pull forward another car opposite of her backed into the passenger side door. A police report was filed with a sketch showing that angle and marking the other driver at fault. I called the other parties insurance and they said they were denying the claim even before I gave a statement to them. Then I mentioned the police report and even dashcam footage I have showing the angle and they still denied.

Once before I was in a similar situation and filed with my insurance and it ended up being 50/50 and my rates went up like crazy for 3 years so I'm hesitant to do so again. Is there any advantage to me just fixing my car out of pocket and the suing her in Magistrate court for the damages and inconvenience?

The other auto insurance company refuse to pay

    Posted: 29 Oct 2021 09:03 PM PDT

I got involved in a car accident. The other car hit my side door. I filed the claim with my insurance GEICO. GEICO said I'm not at fault. The other insurance company Safeco Insurance said their driver is not at fault, thus they refuse to pay my repair. And they didn't ask me to pay their repair.

"A witness stated they observed the driver of your vehicle run the red light" They wrote, which I believe is not true.

I only have my liability insurance with GEICO.

    What can I do next?

    Bump

    Posted: 30 Oct 2021 12:38 AM PDT

So I hit a car in a parking lot, the lot was super small and I thought I had room to get out. But I didn't and hit a car but we did exchange insurance and I did make a claim.

As I was backing up, I bump a wall, there was no damage to the wall and it did leave a little damage to my car, it's not even noticeable. I don't plan on repairing the damages because it's not even bad, it's not noticeable. Do I have to report bumping the wall if there was no damage?

Hit by another driver and only have phone number

    Posted: 29 Oct 2021 07:57 AM PDT

Hello, I was hit by another driver and there is minor damage to my bumper. The other driver left their phone number and agreed to settle cash. However once I sent him the estimate, he stopped responding to my text. Is there anyway to find out his insurance information with just his phone number?

Just switched to Farmers for home & auto effective 11/1/21 - shitting bricks over "home inspection"

    Posted: 29 Oct 2021 04:12 PM PDT

Hi Folks! Hope you can clarify this for me. TLDR: I used to have Allstate for 9 years, and everything was fine, but the past three years, my rate went up over 100 dollars a year. Finally shopped around last week and decided to go with Farmers, my quote was 342$ cheaper a year on the house, and 40$ cheaper a month on the car insurance.

In my documents, I am told I may require a home inspection. Keep in mind I have already signed the Farmer's contract, as well as given notice in writing to Allstate that I am cancelling. I am FREAKING OUT that I am either going to get a much higher quote, or they would worst-case deny me straight out.

I have anxiety and have a problem being paranoid. Please be kind. My house was built in 1967. Roof is 12 years old. Appliances are less than 10 years old, the complete plumbing in the crawl space and main sewer drain was just replaced last year. I have two small sheds on my property for lawn mowers, and one big metal carport that I bought from Carolina Carports to keep my antique 1949 Ford 9N tractor out of the weather.

I am freaking out because what if they tell me there are things on my house that need fixed before getting insurance. I have already cancelled with the other company! Has anyone been through this same thing and can set me straight? Thank you all!

    Lightning then Flooded Basement

    Posted: 29 Oct 2021 02:04 PM PDT

Lighting hit my house on 10/7/21, punched a hole in my house, and fried a lot of electronics. State Farm has been taking care of me on this. Received payment for everything that I've submitted, repair work to begin on the house soon.

Fast forward to 10/25/21 and we have a torrential rain. Early morning my electronic sump pump float controller dies, sump pump never kicks on, basement starts to flood. I have a Ring water sensor by the pump, so I'm notified quickly, get a plumber out to replace, and have a company out to start drying the basement.

State Farm is saying that I need to file a separate claim for the basement flooding and enact my supplemental sewer/water backup coverage. Now I'm in for a 2nd sizeable deductible and a high risk of being dropped by State Farm for filing two claims in quick succession.

I'm waiting for the bill to show up to see if I should just pay out of pocket before a 2nd claim, but my question is, shouldn't this be covered by the first claim?

Sump pump and controller are only 6 months old. My adjuster even said he'd have no problem covering the controller replacement under the lightning claim. Why would they not cover the water backup?

I claimed my fridge that the lightning burned up and they are going to pay me out for the lost food. It seems like a logical cause and effect situation.

I've pleaded my case with my agent, and he says he'll talk to the adjuster, but I'm expecting I'll be told to pound sand.

    Any advice?

Hit by uninsured driver, worth pursuing diminished value claim with my insurance?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2021 07:53 PM PDT

Per the title, tonight I was rear ended by a 74 year old with no registration or insurance, guy had no business driving. The damage doesn't look terrible, started the claim with my insurance already and got a police report since he was red flag central. The vehicle is nothing too special (06 Honda Ridgeline) but is relatively low mileage and single family owned. I figure it'd sell in the teens. Is it worth pursuing a diminished value claim through my insurance?

Insurance being sued by Auto Accident Lawyer

    Posted: 29 Oct 2021 03:54 PM PDT

So I recently got into a car accident where I am responsible for the accident. I was getting from behind a truck I couldn't see over just before an intersection and ran a red light. Basically they T-boned my car and at the time everyone seemed okay (it was two children and their parent in their car). Recently my insurance reached out to me and said they got a lawyer and originally they weren't predicting that the settlement would go over my policy limits (bodily injury $10000 per person and $20000 per occurrence, and $50000 property damage). I just received a letter from my insurance company saying based on the preliminary review that the settlement may go over my policy and I'm kind of freaking out that I'm going to owe a large amount of money. Is this normal or am I pretty much done for?

    [MA] Inaccurate Info on MVR..

    Posted: 29 Oct 2021 06:31 PM PDT

    Hey everyone!

I'm in a bit of a pickle here.. Called my insurance company and ask them some questions and when she answered one of my questions. I knew there was incorrect information on my Motor Vehicle Report.

I have a suspicion that my prior insurance company reported inaccurate Claim information. Called them to see what is going on and they gave me this "we have no idea what your talking about" speech.

This was a non at fault accident.

I called my current insurance agent, to obtain a Copy of my MA RMV driving record and it's clear. Same thing with LexisNexis.

The prior insurance company said something about a "LossRun" Report.. Any idea on how to obtain a copy of this?

Motorcycle ran over by garbage truck

    Posted: 29 Oct 2021 06:05 PM PDT

I've been dealing with an incident for the past month and I'm not sure how I'm going to be able to be made whole by the insurance process.

My motorcycle was my primary mode of transportation foe two weeks of this month.

My motorcycle was parked legally on the street and a garbage truck knocked it over and dragged it. This is a 2019 motorcycle worth about $15k.

The driver notified me and a supervisor from their company came out. Did all of the paperwork and opened an insurance claim.

I don't know if we're allowed to name the insurance companies, but this one is an "administrator" that handles these claims. It's been a slow moving process.

I transported the motorcycle to a repair shop and got an estimate a few days later. Submitted it to the insurance company. About a month went by of reaching out and they have finally agreed that their client is accepting fault and are sending out an appraiser.

When the claim was opened, the original claims rep said I would be reimbursed for loss of use.

After talking to a supervisor to get the ball rolling, I was told that they won't give me anything over what their appraiser seems appropriate. Any loss of use, rental cars, tows, storage fees, or damage estimate fees will not be reimbursed.

I was also told that the driver is insulated from being perused legally by his contract with the garbage company, and this claims administration company will litigate against me on their behalf.

I guess a motorcycle is considered a "toy" and they also don't consider it as something that needs to be stored or paid to be towed, since it can be put in the back of the truck.

Additionally, I'm told that I should have rented a pick up truck to transport it because it's cheaper than the tow. Had another mode of transportation, etc.

The closing part of the conversation with their insurance was that if I accept their payout, I will have to agree not to pursue additional damages from the garbage company.

I'm thinking of going to my insurance, but this wasn't a collision.

Im not sure if I should find an attorney or accept their payment and go after the garbage company in small claims court.

I just don't see how they can drive around these big trucks damaging other peoples stuff and get away with lowballing them and not making them whole again.

Backed into a parked car (Louisiana)

    Posted: 29 Oct 2021 05:40 PM PDT

I backed into the front bumper of my neighbors car in our apartment complex parking lot. I put a dent in the corner of his front bumper and the corner of my rear bumper. I gave him my insurance insurance information and went ahead and reported the accident with my insurance company.

Here is my question, I know my rate is going to go up because of this but will it go up less if I go out of pocket for the repair to my car vs. claiming the repair to my vehicle on my insurance?

Just renewed my Life and Disability after 10 year lapse. Question on Captive vs. Independent agent

    Posted: 29 Oct 2021 03:55 PM PDT

Being relatively new at this (did medical 10 years ago, before career change) which is better for a relatively inexperienced agent starting out, go captive and have access to all the companies training to get a good grounding, or join a big independent agency or start my own...and get appointed with a bunch of different companies. For a newby, relatively speaking, what would be the best route starting out?

    Renters insurance - appliance damage

    Posted: 29 Oct 2021 11:30 AM PDT

    Hi there -

Looking for a bit of advice on if renters insurance will cover the following:

My partner fell on my dishwasher door. Lol i know, funny. Turns out it may need to be a replacement. Landlord is thinking about payment, but I think it might be that they want to split this 50-50.

Would this be covered by renters insurance in a normal situation? I think I read that appliances are covered by homeowners insurance, so it's not covered under property coverage, but it is under liability?

Other party insurance giving me a low estimate for repairs

    Posted: 29 Oct 2021 02:13 PM PDT

Hello, I was in a car accident and it was the other persons fault. I do not have collision insurance which means the other person's insurance company is the one paying me for the repairs.

They sent me a quote of $3500 for repairs which was quoted by looking at pictures I sent them.

I brought my car to a few reputable shops around me area and they all quoted me around $4500.

The insurance company sent me a $3500 check without telling me and I received it in the mail. They said they will only pay for the quoted $4500 amount if I bring it into the shop to get it repaired and the shop sends them a 'supplement' that explains why the quote is higher.

This car is my second "beater" car which I only use for commuting or activities where I don't care if my car gets dirty/scratched. So I don't plan on spending the $3500 check they sent me on repairing it but instead probably send it to a cheap body shop just to get the damage 'repaired' instead of 'replaced' with new body panels, etc for a much cheaper amount, and pocketing the remaining money. Because I do not care about the cosmetic damage.

My question is how can I negotiate with the insurance company to send me the proper amount of $4500? When I called them and told them I would email them the quotes and how their quote wasn't accurate because they looked at it in pictures, while the shops looked at my car in person, they refused to send me a $4500 check to match it and said they would only match it if I actually went and committed to getting my car repaired at the shop and only if the shop sent them an official 'supplement' statement saying that they are working on the vehicle.

When does my accident stop affecting my rate?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2021 01:28 PM PDT

So yesterday my wife got into her first accident, and while I know that my rate will increase, I had a question that I really don't know if it can be answered.

My policy renewed on the 25th, accident was 28th. I understand accident affects rates for three years. So when my Oct 25th 2024 renewal comes, will my rate still be affected? If so, if I switch today to a different company, when my renewal comes in Oct 29th, 2024, will my rate still be affected?

    Auto accident, advice needed

    Posted: 29 Oct 2021 12:38 PM PDT

A few weeks ago, I was involved in a minor auto accident. The other driver didn't notice I had the right of way, and ran into my front side damaging the left light and also part of the door. The vehicle is drivable as I was able to drive it home from the accident site a few miles away, but the insurance is considering it a total loss as it damaged part of the frame. If I would have to take an estimate I would think it would be around two to three thousand to fix everything.

The other driver was found at fault and both of us have Processive so I thought things would be easy. Unfortunately it has been the complete opposite. The agent from Progressive is fighting me on everything. The first part was about getting a rental car. She is first only wanted to give me at for 3 days and then reluctantly let me have it for a few more days until the inspection was done. Even after the inspection it would only extend it three more days. When I was given the buyout, I was told that the max that they would be willing to do is $10,800.00. This is for a 2015 Hyundai Sonada with 125k miles. I admit the inside has seen better days, but they are considering the upholstery to be a one out of three and marked off around $600 because of it. When they gave me report they showed five comparable vehicles but only gave me the VIN numbers along with prices and did not show me pictures or even who the person was telling was so I can go down there and look for myself what type of condition the car was in. When I told them that I just bought a new battery for $230 a month ago they explained that they could not take this into consideration as it's considered the upkeep of the vehicle. When I told them of a backup camera that I installed again they fought and stated that they do not cover aftermarket items. The final straw was when they were arguing with me about replacing a car seat that I got in the car. Reluctantly the agreed to replace but they are wanting me to take pictures of the model number so I am sure I will not get full value and just a few dollars for it. They did give me a buyback price of $3,200.00, but with the car having quite a bit in miles I think I'd rather pass on that offer.

Is this normally how car accident claims work ? I've never been in a car accident in my life so I'm unsure of the process. Well I know I can get my own appraiser, I really don't want to as all I'm asking for is another thousand dollars from Progressive and I'm sure a temp razor would cost around 3 to $400 at least. One great thing though is that the way my wife and I work schedules are, we can get by with one car. In fact I don't mind playing the waiting game with Progressive and just letting them have the car for about a year to see if they change their minds. My only concern though is they might want to rephrase it and it would get a lower value since it would be a older car. Any advice would be helpful and appreciated !!!

Are depreciation costs standard on HOI claim settlements?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2021 12:16 PM PDT

We just received our estimate back from the HOI company and the breakdown of dollar amounts goes:

Replacement Cost -Recoverable Depreciation -Non-recoverable Depreciation

    =Actual Cash Value

    -Deductible =Net Claim Amount

+Recovered Depreciation =Net with Recovered Depreciation

Are the depreciation amounts standard across all HOI claims?

Also, as a side question, our HOI renewal is approaching, and once we close this claim and can shop other policies, what is the best practice for researching policies from different companies? I reviewed previous quotes from our 2020-2021 period renewal and none mention specifics to the policy.

Painting contractor hit our parking lot with overspray. (PA)

    Posted: 29 Oct 2021 08:22 AM PDT

State is Pennsylvania. They hit about 30 vehicles. General liability carrier has contacted us and admitted fault. They are agreeing to pay reasonable costs.

I submitted my estimate. They have OK'd the work to be completed. This is the part that I'm unsure about: "Once the vehicle is complete and paid for, please send me the receipts and we will send a Release and once the Release is signed and sent to me, we will place for reimbursement immediately. "

Should I be paying out-of-pocket for this? I'd like to be sure my vehicle is restored prior to paying anything.

Communication has been like pulling teeth up to this point. And they have mentioned they will only pay "reasonable costs" more than once while trying to dictate which shops we can use for repairs. Basically, I don't trust what they are saying. Any advice is appreciated.

Went to ED for panic attack given 1 injection of haldol, 1 IV placed, and 1 ECG. I received a bill for around 3,100 after insurance is 1,400. (Only reason I went was because I thought I was having a asthma/heart attack after finding out my ex bf cheated on me, and I was alone) I only make 12/hr and cant pay this, I wiped my savings after breaking the lease I had with my ex to move back home. Hospital said I can apply for financial aid, and it asks for household. Now Im with my parents and pay them for bills, they dont help me financially so do they have to count as a household?

Sr. Auto Appraiser - switch to Field Property Adjuster?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2021 10:00 AM PDT

    Hi!

I'm an experienced field auto appraiser looking for a career change, not much career growth potential from what I have experienced and starting to feel burnt out and been working with and around cars since I was a kid. I do love being on the road and traveling locally day to day, the flexibility that comes with that is highly valued. I am considering some openings for field homeowners adjuster… can someone shed some light on this position and how to break into the new field with no real experience on homeowners side of claims? I am a handy homeowner myself so Id say I'm above average DIY'er for repairs/remodeling. That's pretty much the only experience I have for homeowners side.

Any field adjusters out there that can provide some insight on the pros/cons of the position overall? Is there a lot of micromanaging of how claims are handled or tough negotiations with contractors to reach an agreement on cost to repair?

Before I start applying online just wondering what steps I can take to better my chances
