Did the Idea come first, or the drive to be an Entrepreneur?

    Posted: 01 Oct 2021 10:31 AM PDT

    Hello All,

I have wanted to be an entrepreneur for as long as I can remember. My question to you all is, what came first for you?

I sometimes struggle figuring out what the niche I want to be an entrepreneur in is, but I know I want to be an entrepreneur. My approach has been to try businesses that grab my attention, and go with it to see what the result is, succeed or fail.

How do you handle being the Boss's son?

    Posted: 30 Sep 2021 09:02 PM PDT

I'm taking over my Dad's business due to his illness, but it seems every time I refer to him as a "Dad, let's do this" or "My father suggested this" in front of clients, I lose their respect as if they judge me for someone who was handed everything while I did earn my spot on the family business.

    Anyone can relate?

Edit: Thank you for your responses, I see true value on most of the advice and I will try to change things.

Overwhelmed and I do not know what to start with

    Posted: 01 Oct 2021 09:47 AM PDT

Hi, I'm a full-time student and currently working part time on Saturdays. I've been interested in building something independently for a while now, I've tried different things and never really got far. I have ideas, realistic ideas in my opinion, but I have no idea how to start implementing them.

For example, I've been thinking about creating or/and taking care of websites for small businesses in my area, but I just don't know how to go about it.

A bigger idea would be some sort of delivery service, since there isn't one where I live. My point is that the number of opportunities I'm potentially interested in is just overwhelming and I don't know how or what to do, anyone have ideas?

    Sorry if this sounds stupid

Help with marketing and getting leads

    Posted: 01 Oct 2021 01:31 PM PDT

I have been working on getting my first client for my IT consulting business for around 2 months now and in that time I have been trying both LinkedIn cold outreach and cold email but nothing is working.

I have never done any kind of marketing before as this is my first proper business and I'm 15. I guess I am just looking for some guidance/advice on what I'm doing. Here is a rough outline of what I'm currently doing:

    Prospecting through LinkedIn sales nav

    Sending cold messages via LinkedIn

Connecting with prospects on LinkedIn and starting conversations with them

    Sending cold emails manually

    Posting in Subreddits

I have hired a freelancer to help out with cold email outreach but if this doesn't work then I won't have enough money to hire anyone else or invest anymore. Any advice that you could offer would be greatly appreciated!

Edit: Here is a brief overview of what my business does.

I help businesses save time and money while increasing their team's productivity by creating a full technology system in the cloud.

I start with Office 365 or Google Workspace and then add on more services based on their needs. I set it all up and then the client can opt-in for a monthly maintenance plan.

How to change my idea into reality

    Posted: 01 Oct 2021 09:54 AM PDT

I want to start a fresh juice shop chain in college towns. I am very curious and observing. I am from civil engineering and planning background. I only have ideas that I have learned in life and learned from observations. I don't know how to materialize my ideas.

I made a simple directory for entrepreneurs looking for cofounders

    Posted: 01 Oct 2021 02:39 AM PDT

Long story short I was frustrated at how imprecise and tormenting it was to search for a cofounder for your idea.

So I've built my own directory. I've started learning to code at the beginning of this year so this feels like quite an accomplishment.

Here's the link to service: https://partnerz.vercel.app/

You can add your data in there as well. I'm testing it before moving to its own domain.

I'm curious to hear what you all think.

Now that I've figured out the technical part I was thinking of making databases of other things as well. If you have any recommendations I'm more than happy to hear about them.

Is there a cheap accounting software that I could use?

    Posted: 01 Oct 2021 04:21 AM PDT

I have a small business involving people from different countries. I would like somewhere where I could record sales and monitor performances. Is there an app that I could use? Thank you.

I need a brand name for my vitamin/supplement startup

    Posted: 01 Oct 2021 08:24 AM PDT

I would love the community's input for a supplement business name.

I am looking to set up a lifestyle health and wellness brand with only clean, traceable and no BS ingredients.

Think Goli Nutrition, Ritual, Moon Juice, CareOf, Thorne and Persona.

The product will be multivitamins and then we expand to collagen, protein, other supplements.

    Thanks a bunch!

Does reading a book on a subject matter that’s crucial to your business or craft count as work hours?

    Posted: 01 Oct 2021 11:42 AM PDT

I'm wondering how you all feel about it. I honestly think that it should count as long as it's related to your business or entrepreneurial journey

Can I monetize my Tumblr blog with Google Adsense?

Sourcing product for a business idea

    Posted: 01 Oct 2021 10:57 AM PDT

I have an idea for a business, but I'm struggling on how to even get started.

I basically need a water proof wristband that has a SIM slot, GPS, and the ability to send it's location and an ID to a web service. Preferably with my own branding.

Nothing I search seems to come up with anything useful. Any help on how I can get this is appreciated.

We just launched a site that lets you send postcards to friends and family for free. Businesses are asking if they could bulk send postcards through us. I'm not totally convinced it's a good idea. What do you think?

I want to license a business / product

    Posted: 01 Oct 2021 12:49 PM PDT

I'm an aspiring Canadian entrepreneur with strong formal and applied business acumen in the corporate world. I want to be an entrepreneur. I've tried a few side hustles that never panned out.

I've come across a few people that have bought into it licensed a product or business model and purchased exclusive rights for the country. For example, I'm aware of one person who purchased the licensing rights and business model/proprietary software from an American company to then operate in Canada, presumably paying royalties similar to a franchise.

It got me thinking - there's probably other great opportunities of businesses that are relatively new, doing well in the USA or globally, and looking to expand in other countries. How can I find these opportunities?

Is anyone aware of a resource to connect with companies that are looking to licence their product or business model for global execution? Specifically in Canada. Thanks!

Are you the trial&error type of entrepreneur or do you want to understand things before you act?

    Posted: 01 Oct 2021 04:05 AM PDT

I guess everyone is a mixture of both, but most people seem to have rather strong tendencies.

I'm definitely the theoretical kind of person that loves playing around with ideas, trying to find the underlying reasons and workings of the world.

I guess what fascinates me is the (somewhat naive) idea of being the first to really understand how something (e.g. a business niche) works. Also, as long as I'm just with myself thinking about stuff, I can't be proven wrong. If I'm totally honest, that's a big factor.

On the other side of the spectrum, there are those who are not afraid of failing and just keep doing things and learn on the way.

Of course, these types of people are a lot more productive. However, this approach seems to lead into catastrophe more often because they act without understanding what and whom they're dealing with.

What is your approach? Have you been successful with it? Did you have to learn from the other approach to be successful?

How to make money by selling your idea.

My twin brother and I sold our first mobile app to someone on reddit for $10k. We didn't want to continue working on it so we sold it. The person that bought it from us was an investor and now his "startup" worth $10m. https://youtu.be/oyIKFrBC3Sc

Online business - best state for asset protection?

    Posted: 01 Oct 2021 12:32 PM PDT

Im opening an online telehealth website. Ive spoken to dozens of people what state would be best to be registered as an LLC partnership for personal legal protection.

Overwhelmingly I get 3 answers... Wyoming, Delaware, and Nevada.

Just curious if anyone has any opinions on this....

Instagram advertisers, how many followers do you get per dollar spent?

    Posted: 01 Oct 2021 12:26 PM PDT

I just started promoting ad posts, and I am finding that I only get slightly less than one follower per dollar spent on promotion. I am inexperienced with Instagram ads, but this seems like poor performance considering my ad's main call to action is to have people follow my profile.

What are other people's experience with this, and does anyone have general advice for getting better results?

any advice for a 'starving artist'?

    Posted: 30 Sep 2021 04:22 PM PDT

All i want to do is Paint. Acrylic or oil or watercolor. My style is realism and a little added abstract. Im excellent at portraits and quite good at landscapes too I feel this good talent is going to waste and can be leading to so much more. I made about 600usd last year from selling paintings -but this was a one time event that is unlikely to happen because of the situation in my country. Third world, Fiji. I was considering learning tattooing and spending more energy in the online tshirt print om demand idea, but its not reliable. Barely any sales (~1 a year?)

Im really good at art,and even better when i invest more energy and focus - the work results better. I had no formal art education, but i was so passionate about it that i learnt it all myself online.

Is this better off just a highly skilled leisure activity?

    Recommendations for job quoting software

    Posted: 01 Oct 2021 12:05 PM PDT

I currently have a small service company with around 3 employees. We do security system installs etc.. I currently use a word doc form that I built about 15 years ago as my "quote" software, but its looking dated and rough.. but when I try to look up newer more professional software, it gets murky, and quick!

What is a good "go-to" for contractors etc? I'd prefer something without a monthly subscription. I don't mind paying a good amount out of pocket, I just hate subscription services.

    Thanks!

Starting an LLC and I have some questions

    Posted: 01 Oct 2021 11:36 AM PDT

I am starting an in-home music lesson business. I want to apply for an LLC soon. I've been looking at all of the required info to do it, and I've come up with a few questions. I'm still considering having some professional help to make sure I do it all properly, but so many people have said it's so easy so I still want to give myself a chance to do it on my own.

First of all, for tax purposes, should my spouse be part of the LLC? He is very helpful in all of the decision-making, but he will not actually be offering the service I will be providing.

Second question: Should I have a PO box as my mailing address? I'm slightly concerned with my actual home address being out on display, even though it is the nature of my business that people will be coming to my house. (Side note, I have already checked with my neighborhood and city ordinances, and all is well on that front.)

Third question: the website for filing says that my business will only be active on January 1st of next year since I'm filing so late this year. Should I avoid spending money on the business (I really just need to buy music books) for tax purposes? Or can I retroactively put any spending that I do now on my future business?

Fourth question: should I have a separate bank account/credit card for business? It's going to be a very small-scaled operation (I don't think I would even break $15k in profit even if I'm super successful). Should I do it anyway?

Thanks in advance for any and all help/advice! I'm very new to all of this and I'm super excited to be part of this community!

    Posted: 01 Oct 2021 07:38 AM PDT

I dunno if this is the right sub for this but I figured we are who this effecting. Anyone else having this problem?

What text to use for cold messaging outreach

    Posted: 01 Oct 2021 06:51 AM PDT

I have a lot of connections in my LinkedIn and Instagram profile that fits the ideal clients for my startup. I would like to start contacting them through direct messages and I am wondering what approach would work better:

    1. Direct approach:

    Hey Katherine,

I developed an app for nutrition professionals like you (It's called ...) and it's been helping them to win and handle way more clients in less time.

    Is this something you need?

I'd love to hear any feedback or questions you have about it!

    1. An invitation to talk:

    Hi Katherine,

We are connected but did not have the chance to introduce ourselves. I see you work in the nutrition field, my company (link here) is helping nutrition professionals to win and handle far more clients in less time.

I would like to know more about you. Could you please tell me what is your dream outcome as a nutrition professional?

I like the first option, what do you think? I am open to any other suggestion.
