Hiring is harder than you think. After many flops, I figured out how to not suck at it. Posted: 01 Sep 2021 03:38 AM PDT As most posts here are about making money and selling, I feel like hiring is an underappreciated topic. Some entrepreneurs never break through the delegation barrier and get stuck along the way. Sure enough, it's essential to make your first dollar before you go recruit more people. Also, some businesses need minimum human labor or none at all. But, assuming not all of you here are selling NFTs for a living, and many have traditional product or service businesses that need a headcount to scale, I hope you find this valuable. My first hires were quick and opportunistic. My attitude used to be like "You seem to be a good guy, I like you, let's do it!" right after a first meeting. No wonder 70% of them were total flops (I'll leave these stories for another time). The other 30% were actually amazing, but that's not a ratio any business can afford. I didn't want to use external recruitment firms and HR services. However, your first hires define your company culture - how could I outsource it to someone whose only incentive is to take a chunk of their salary? I sat down with our Head of Design (for full context, we were hiring UX/UI designers for our digital product agency) and developed a questionnaire we asked ourselves to do the recruitment process right this time. Here are the questions and how we approached them: Do we hire for attitude or skill? Attitude and aptitude for junior positions. The same + skills and experience for senior Do we hire for short time-to-value, or do we treat it as an investment? Basically, do we how some urgent work to be done, or are we comfortable with investing our time and resources to train new people so they can bring real value in 3-6 months? In our case, we looked for both and interviewed accordingly. What's the objective of the short assignment part? Not all jobs have this part in the recruitment process. Our task was specific to the UX/UI designer position on designing a part of the missing interface and required some research. In our case, we looked for a balance between creativity and pragmatism. On the one hand, it's hard to assess creativity given the time constraint (6 hours). On the other hand, you want to pick something better than a generic outcome. We couldn't answer this question until we had all completed assignments, but eventually, the best assignments were about 40% creative and 60% pragmatic (solved the given problem). It sounds silly to put these 60/40 measures here, but I couldn't find a better way to illustrate it. There is no real prescription here, just a reminder to be mindful about the objective and how it will map on to the actual job. Why would someone pick us over somebody else? If money is the only answer, then you probably don't need to read this post anyway. Our answer was: We want to be authentic, we want to be clear about what we do and how, and we just look for like-minded people. If you don't know where to start, start right over there. Writing a thoughtful, inclusive, transparent job description is low-hanging fruit with crazy ROI. In the world of corporate slang and opaque, half-ass job postings, the ability to write like a human is very appreciated. What is our unfair advantage? What can we see in other people top companies HR departments will overlook or not care about? Super important question. What trait that doesn't pass through corporate filters is valuable for us? First screening calls are usually dull and pretty basic. Instead, we doubled down on understanding what really tickles candidates' fancy. I shared my screen and said, "Hey, let's go explore the internet together. Show me something that blew your mind recently. What should I type?" The obvious benefit is that people felt appreciated and differentiated, but I really had a chance to understand their deep motivations, inspirations, how they think, and what they like. Again, I'm not saying these are all silver bullets, but hopefully, I gave you some food for thought. If you find it helpful, I usually share my learning for bulding an agency biz on twitter Oh, and BTW, back in the day when we first implemented this framework, we were looking for just one new team member. I ended up hiring four because I just couldn't miss the opportunity to work with such exceptional people. [link] [comments] |
What's your motivation to become entrepreneur beside money? Posted: 01 Sep 2021 01:33 AM PDT I've been thinking about it. Most people seem to be entrepreneur for money. Anybody who decided to become entrepreneur with a primary reason other than money? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 01 Sep 2021 03:53 AM PDT We see that the blockchain technology adoption is growing. So we like to include cryptocurrency payment method option to our website. What do you think of this? Someone here tried this? We would appreciate if you share your experience relevant to this at business level. Our current option is to use the website like Bitpay or make our own smart contract for escrow. What do you think? We also consider publishing our own token or coin for our website. Do you think it will be a viable option? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Sep 2021 02:27 PM PDT So a lot of the products I receive before selling off to customers have a lot of plastic packaging. Because I receive them in bulk there's a lot of plastic i take off, before repacking. Unfortunately, there's no way around this. I am recycling or reusing as much as I can. Is there a way I can use to the used plastic to make money? [link] [comments] |

Should I get bachelor degree if I own a company right now? Posted: 01 Sep 2021 01:48 PM PDT Hi! I'm a young entrepreneur who owns a digital marketing & web development agency right now. I'm 19, live in Ukraine and there may be a way to move abroad so possibility to abandon entrepreneurship and work as a specialist (cause I'm not sure if I'll be able to build a company abroad) exist but not that high as I earn good enough (at least now, not sure about the future) I look at these "studies" with a big doubt because there are fundamentals while I'm already experienced. The main reason is to get a piece of paper for the future. Any suggestions? Should I take real study courses instead to increase my leadership skills and etc.? Thanks in advance [link] [comments] |
What business to start with someone who LOVES data entry / repetitive work? Posted: 01 Sep 2021 01:41 PM PDT I have a colleague who is in love with data entry and repetitive work. I've seen him do it and it's just something else. He's super organized, super accurate, and pays very close attention to detail. He's also way underpaid. So what do r/entrepreneur? I really want to raise this guy's income somehow, he's a great dude. [link] [comments] |
Building out a EV app less charging network in Houston Posted: 01 Sep 2021 09:40 AM PDT We are getting rid of the mobile app. EV drivers will be able to communicate with our network via text message. We are also creating a network that will eradicate the need to aimlessly look for a station and look for a place to hang out while charging. Get back your time. We will be the new standard for public EV charging. [link] [comments] |
I had a question about LLC names and business names. Posted: 01 Sep 2021 01:22 PM PDT I had an e-commerce store 2 years ago and it didn't go so well. Now, I have more experience (especially in marketing) and want to start my own store again. I want to get an LLC for the benefits. But the question I had was does the LLC name have to be different than Store Name? I basically have this name I used for my other store which sounds like a fashion company and would like to use that as an LLC. But the new store name was related to the theme, so I don't know if the store name has to be the same as the LLC. Thank you [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Sep 2021 01:03 PM PDT Just curious what others are doing with this. This coming year, I'm going to be going full throttle into writing books, indie publishing, querying books to publishing houses, and likely offering up proofing/editing services where I can. After watching some friends venture into the self-published writing scene, I'm very aware of how the first few months or even years can be low-profit. Income seems to have what I've dubbed a "three/four book hump" where the first releases often make very little money but the third or fourth in a series has an income surge that justifies the quiet opening act. Obviously, some authors are lucky enough to make bank right out of the gate, but I'd rather prepare for a more average scenario. None of them even thought about looking into getting an LLC until they started getting more money. However, I see that entire window of liability and scream internally. What would any of them have done if someone decided to send lawyers after them on some frivolous claim? I also just read about the whole "Omegaverse Fiction Lawsuit" debacle and while hilarious, it was also eye-opening to see how easily some authors can have their entire lives destroyed by rival authors throwing litigation around like the players in the aforementioned lawsuit. I imagine DMCA can act as a middleman to protect an uninsured indie author provided they just comply with any takedown orders. I just can't help but wonder about worst-case scenarios, though, where a fraudulent DMCA or plagiarism claim got thrown at some indie author who simply didn't have the money to defend themselves in court (and genuinely wasn't even plagiarizing anything.) What then? Lose their house? Another fear that comes to mind is if someone claims that your work of fiction is injuring them in some way, what then? I'm really just talking about frivolous suits here and luck simply not favoring the honest party. Is the only option to just drop $800 for that LLC protection and hope you make it back or is there some protection I don't know about that's intended for indie creators who are just starting out and can't yet say if they're even going to break $800 in the first quarter? Similarly, I've been doing illustration and design work under the table for a couple of years now and recently stopped out of fear of working without an LLC. Again, for fears of people gaming the system in a way that really just screws people who aren't doing anything wrong but don't have the money or insurance to defend themselves. I wouldn't know how to protect myself other than just arguing facts the best I can. I'd love to just get an LLC and have that liability protection for both my writing and design/illustration endeavors but is there an option they have for people who are so new to operating as a business that they can't yet say how much they bring in annually? Sorry this is so long, I just figured I'd try to be as specific as possible in case LLCs work differently depending on what type of business you operate (and what types of threats they'd potentially have to defend your assets against.) how do i make people use my website Posted: 01 Sep 2021 09:16 AM PDT hello, i'm in highschool and i made my first "proffessional" website It's called https://paywalls.io , and it works as follows : upload the file pick your price enter your paypal address and it'll generate a link to the page where you can buy the file like this one https://link.paywalls.io/files/72a3d02c-ae5d-463f-a7cd-c08607d705d8 . I wanted my first project to be very easy to use, it's basically a file sharing website but you have to pay the owner of the file in order to download it. So far i've paid 60$ in total for the project: 30$ for the domain name and 30$ for the servers. The problem is, in the past month nobody has used my service once exept me for testing but that was expected currently me and my friends are the only people who are aware of its existence. This brings me to the title of this post, how do i make people use my website? keep in mind that i am 16 yo and that i only have around 200$ my bank account. [link] [comments] |

Has anyone used a plastic injection mold? What did you learn or what advice would you give? Posted: 01 Sep 2021 11:39 AM PDT Basically the title. I've had a product idea for years but I can only find the same guide copy-pasted when I look for the steps. I'd love to hear someone else's experience in getting a product set up this way. “But I don’t have enough money to start…” When lacking resources, be resourceful! Example inside. Posted: 31 Aug 2021 03:50 PM PDT Search through this subreddit for more than five minutes and you will notice a major theme emerge… "I don't have enough money to start my business!" Have you seen one of the million post about money problems yet? I have and here is the truth that all of these posters miss: YOU WILL NEVER HAVE ALL THE RESOURCES YOU NEED RIGHT WHEN YOU NEED THEM. Did I type that loud enough? Look, you can complain about having negative funds all day or you can reframe the problem and ask better questions. You don't have a money problem, you have a CREATIVITY problem. Instead of worrying about money (for now at least), ask yourself the following question: "What resources do I need to start up my venture and who has those resources?" Meet Jim. Jim is an entrepreneur who dreamed of having a food truck that served tasty vegetarian food with a tropical twist. The idea was unique, the area had a ton of young vegetarians, and no other food truck or restaurant in the area catered to them. Jim just had one problem…. No money. Zip. None. Notta. What Jim did have was a burning desire to succeed. Armed with his trusty yellow legal pad and BIC pen he sat down at his parents kitchen table and started brain storming. A couple hours into the thinking session Jim looked down at his paper and came to a realization…. He had absolutely no idea how to start. Several days later on a Sunday morning Jim was driving his normal route to the store when something caught his eye. On the right side of the road, out front of a big church was a food truck serving the hungry crowd leaving the religious services. Upon further observation it become clear to JIm that the food truck likely belonged to the church itself. Our brains are pretty amazing things. When we have a problem our brain will go to work in the background and constantly try to come up with a solution. Thanks to something called the Reticular Activating System, Jim's brain keyed on to the solution to his problem. Jim got in touch with the church and found out that they only used the food truck on Wednesdays and Sundays directly after church services and the rest of the time it sat vacant. He negotiated a "win-win" deal for both him and the church. The church would let him use the food truck on the other five days a week to serve his vegetarian customers and in exchange Jim would donate 15% of his profits back to the church and pay for some of the upkeep cost. The church also agreed to pass out coupons to all of its members and encourage them to hit up Jims food truck because supporting him would also be supporting the church. He then went onto craigslist and found some nice tables and chairs being sold by an older couple. Wanting to save every penny he could to purchase food, he offered to mow their yard in exchange for the tables and chairs. Less than an hour later he now had what he needed to provide a small sitting area for his customers. Fast forward five years and Jim now owns three restaurants, his own food truck, and a catering business. As a business consultant I'm always amazed at the number of entrepreneurs who feel that money is the ONLY solution to their problems. Money is nice but its unlikely you will have enough cold hard cash to completely finance your idea. It's even more unlikely that a magical investor will appear checkbook in hand. Start being creative and figure out WHO has the resources you need. Reach out to them and strike win-win deals. That is how the magic happens. [link] [comments] |
How can I offer free shipping for a small ticket item? Posted: 01 Sep 2021 06:18 AM PDT I have a small ticket item ($5.99-$7.99 AUD) and I am trying to work out how to sell it online (website, Amazon, Ebay, etc...). I'd like to offer free shipping and I'm wondering if anyone has any experience selling small ticket items and what postal services you use. [link] [comments] |
Legality of a Small Power washing business in Texas Posted: 01 Sep 2021 05:49 AM PDT So I am trying to start a power washing business, only doing driveways initially, maybe fences. I know how to powerwash, what kind of gear I need, and I'm also confident in my ability to get customers as I have experience with marketing for other contractors. My main concern is not knowing the nitty gritty government red tape. How do I start this up 100% legality. Essentially, I can't afford to get fined, sued, and I don't want to be harassed by the IRS because I did something wrong. So far I figure I need an LLC and power washing insurance, but is that it? Thanks [link] [comments] |
