Legal Advice I (19F) want to escape from Iraq after being tricked into living here permanently.

I (19F) want to escape from Iraq after being tricked into living here permanently.

    Posted: 01 Sep 2021 03:42 AM PDT

Hi, reddit users. If you have time to spare, please continue reading and consider offering your advice—it would mean everything to me.

To begin with, I am in quite a predicament. Actually, that's a bit of an understatement. I'm knee dip in shit.

I'm a 19 y/o female born in Canada, and I was raised in a extremely strict muslim household up until the age of 16. Around this period of time is when my life completely flipped. I was one of many unfortunate individuals who fell for the "it's only a temporary visit" trap. My parents were afraid of western culture influencing me. In a selfish attempt to protect their honor, they packed our bags and we flew to Iraq—one of the most impoverished and war-torn countries in the entire world. The culture shock completely took the attention away from the loss of all my close friends back in Canada. The move to Iraq meant that I was pulled out of high school in Canada without ever completing it despite being quite close to finishing. I cannot attend school in Iraq due to the language barrier as well as the bullying (for being a foreigner)—I am seen as an outcast.

I began clinging onto various random and miscellaneous hobbies to keep myself busy everyday. I was barely allowed to go out. The very few times I could go out, I had to be accompanied by male family members. The last inkling of freedom I used to have has been stripped away. Being housebound for so long makes me feel like a prisoner in my own home. Education is so, so valuable to me and it was taken away from me.

Prior to the Covid outbreak, I decided that I had enough of the rampant emotional and physical abuse. I decided to run away without having any pre-existing knowledge of the outside world because I was desperate for help. I planned to get a taxi to any international airport, wrongly assuming that they would help me.

I ended up getting caught and got sent back home, losing the remaining trust my parents had for me in the process. Not long after, they brought up the topic of marriage and insisted I get married off to one of my close relatives—he was much, much older than me. With the immense pressure and coercion, I gave in. I was unhappier than ever and just wanted out. After the engagement, he mentioned how he engages in many activities that my dad wouldn't approve of. I mentioned the aforementioned activities to my dad as a desperate attempt to call off the marriage, and thankfully, it was successful.

My "ex-fiancé" (for lack of a better word) then revealed sensitive and private information to my dad in an attempt to spite me. This subsequently led to my dad abusing and threatening to kill me if I left the house by myself again. For the next few months, I fell into a deep depression and lost so much weight. I wouldn't eat and would regularly cry myself to sleep all while wishing I'd wake up in my home country. What surprises me is how nonchalant they are about fucking up my life. What also amazes me is how I managed to get a boyfriend (long distance) who lives in a first world country. He is everything I've ever longed for and is a little older than me. We've known each other for quite a long time and he has gotten me to open up and allowed me to finally be able to trust. I wouldnt have the courage to make this post if it wasn't for him.

Fast forward to now, my parents are still as neglectful as ever and I'm always looking for a way out of here. I have this phone but no phone number. I can only connect to the internet. I miss being free. I miss school. But most of all, I miss being safe in my homeland. Is there anything the embassy can help with? What can I do to get out of here as fast as possible? Can the embassy personally fly me out of here? Is there any way my bf can help? He says he's willing to do whatever it takes. Any advice will help immensely—if you reached the end of this post, I appreciate you for taking the time to read everything.

tl;dr: parents pulled me out of high school in Canada and moved back to Iraq to escape "western influence". I tried running away and failed. They emotionally and physically abused me, eventually coercing me into marriage with an older relative (which was called off). I'm depressed and want to escape. I need help.

Edit: contacting the Canadian embassy in Iraq did nothing because they were unresponsive. I attempted to contact them many, many times. I am a legal Canadian citizen.

Should I call CPS on parents giving horse dewormer to their children?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2021 02:31 AM PDT

Edit: We are located in Louisiana.

I just found out tonight that my antivaxx in-laws are taking ivermectin, the horse dewormer, to "treat Covid".

While I don't really care what they do anymore… I found out that they are ALSO giving it to their children, 15 and 9.

My husband and I are going to TRY to visit them tomorrow, and have a rational discussion and persuade them to stop immediately for their own safety. However, I fully expect this to turn into a fight, and have them ignore us and/or kick us out of their house for trying to "tell them how to raise their kids".

I'm genuinely scared for the kids though. They trust these adults to keep them safe, and their parents are feeding them literal poison. If they don't listen to us, which is likely, is this enough reason to call CPS on them? Is there any other action I can take to get them safe?

    Thanks for your time!

Neighbors served my contractor a stop work order. Is this actually a legitimate thing [WY]

    Posted: 01 Sep 2021 11:01 AM PDT

I'm redoing the backyard of my house before I move in. As it stands now there is no grass, deck, garden or anything else it's just an in-ground pool. I'm having the pool removed and all of what I'm doing is legal, meets city codes and my contractor has a permit. My contractor sent me a petition and stoppage of work order from my neighbors because they don't want the pool gone. The old owner allegedly let them swim in it. Is this actually legitimate or can I just ignore them. They aren't from the government they're just ordinary neighbors and this does not sound legitimate to me so I'm wondering.

[IA] My ex died and I am the beneficiary on a life insurance policy on him, which I pay for, but his current wife says she plans to contest it

    Posted: 01 Sep 2021 11:35 AM PDT

In 2011 my ex-husband and I had a baby and thoughts about "the future" freaked us out. My employer offered cheap life insurance through their benefits program, and for a good rate I could also get a policy on my spouse, so we went that route. Because it was through my employer's benefits portal, the premiums are automatically deducted from my paycheck.

When we divorced I nearly closed the policy, but was informed that the company would actually allow me to keep it running because he was the father of my minor child. The policy was cheap, so I kept it open and have continued to pay the premiums.

He passed away in August, and I sent documents to the life insurance policy last week so it is expected to pay out in the near future. Fortunately I do not "need" the funds right now today and am able to support my daughter and I long-term without them, so my plan is to put the funds into an account for my daughter's future.

However two days ago I was contacted on Facebook by his ex-wife. Apparently while going through his documents, she found the original copies of the life insurance policies for him and I in a box. She said that she had contacted the life insurance company and they verified the policy is still active but she can't access the funds because I'm the beneficiary. She "offered" (and made it sound like a favor to me) to split it with me 50/50 since we each have one of his two children.

I responded saying I was sorry for her loss and stated that I took the policy out through my employer and have paid the premiums, and the policy is to benefit my daughter. I tried to say it as nicely as possible, obviously that is hard to do when someone has died. She responded saying if I'm not willing to be reasonable then she will take it to court. She says that her brother is a lawyer, and that he says a court will side with her because a court will assume that the deceased person would have had the policy updated to a current spouse and simply forgot. She said to let me know if I change my mind and want to split it, or she will start the process of going through the court.

I could see that possibly if he himself took out and paid for the policy, but in this case I am the one who took out the policy and the premiums have been deducted from my own paycheck. While I'm very sorry for her loss, I'm also not thrilled at the idea of handling over tens of thousands of dollars that could otherwise benefit my daughter's future.

Does she have a legal claim? If she does, can I at least get my premiums back so it's not like I've paid for years for someone else to get money?

Should I pursue a lawyer or is it unlikely to go anywhere?

Downstairs neighbor hired an attorney to make me change my floors to carpet!

    Posted: 31 Aug 2021 07:47 PM PDT

I bought a condominium in Los Angeles, California in 2016. The flooring was a combination of laminate and tiles throughout the unit. I changed the living room and kitchen to tiles and kept the same laminate in the bedrooms.

Now after 5 years, an attorney emailed me a demand letter saying I need to change my floors "back to carpet" because it's making too much noise for the people downstairs. Our HOA CC&R does not have and specific requirements for floors. After I told the attorney there was never any carpet in my unit, they are threatening to file a lawsuit.

Do they have any case here? What should be my defense strategy?

I have accidentally been scheduled for work during school hours. I am in high school and my manager is saying she can't change it and that I have to find coverage. Can I be fired when I don't show up?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2021 09:02 AM PDT

I am in Utah, 17, and in High School. I work as a CNA in a LTC facility and they allow us to put up the days we wish to work. Since our high school follows an a and b schedule, I am off on b days and those are the days I work. However I have been scheduled on a days and I will be in school for the first two hours of my shift.

I reached out to the CNA manager who makes the schedule, and she told me that it is up to me to find coverage. I told her that if I can't get coverage I can't show up for work, but she still refuses to accommodate for me. I even offered to work the last four hours of my shift instead (this is a different shift block but still falls in my regular block. Just half the time). What should I do?

Neighbor behind my house has 8 (visible) cameras pointed on my house including my back doors and windows and even my driveway.

    Posted: 01 Sep 2021 04:23 AM PDT

I rent. I live in Georgia. And 8 cameras seems beyond excessive as my house is pretty small.

His house is probably 25 feet behind mine and on a small hill. So the back of our houses face each other.

I hung up sun shade sails to help. He keeps cutting his trees which branches fall on the sails on our property, so I had to continually rehang.

He is regularly cutting branches. Oddly he cuts a few branches almost each day? He's always on his ladder doing this or on his roof moving cameras around.

So next I put up a pop up tent to help with our double doors which are glass and it helped a lot. I was able to eliminate the visibility of 4 cameras by doing this.

I also have a large umbrella up to help with visibility. It doesn't help much.

And now he has 3 additional cameras on his roof pointed on my house.

I fucking hate this guy. Is there ANYTHING I can do. I'm so sick of having the blinds closed and feeling like I can't even be normal in my house. I can't even shower without walking to my closet if the curtains aren't closed and blinds too. It's annoying that I can't see sunlight in my house.

    Please help :(

[OREGON] Six-year-old special-needs child left on school bus in bus yard after bus was not checked by driver, found two 2h40m later wandering in bus yard, parent was not notified until 1h20m later

    Posted: 01 Sep 2021 01:42 PM PDT

I put my child on the bus this morning at 7:30 am. They are scheduled to arrive at the school around 8:00 am, where they would then eat breakfast and head to class.

I received a call at roughly 12:00 pm from the district's transportation director telling me that my son had been left on the school bus due to the driver not checking the bus for students once they arrived at the school bus yard (this was the transportation director's wording). I do not know if the normal protocol was that they check before leaving the school as well since I didn't ask at the time.

He then went on to say that he was found outside the bus wandering about the bus yard. I had to ask him what time and he said he was found at 10:40 am. This is roughly two hours and forty minutes after they should have gotten dropped off at the school. I did not receive a call about this until roughly 12:00 pm.

I am attempting to look at this as black and white as possible, but I am seeing a lot of 'what-ifs' and I'm needing to know if I should seek legal counsel. My child was taken to class and is physically fine, so I was told. I thought about going and picking him up immediately, but that's another question perhaps. I will be picking him up and driving him to and from school from now on though.

I'm all over the place in my thoughts. Any advice would be helpful, please.

Maintenance came in unannounced and I pulled a gun on them.

    Posted: 01 Sep 2021 11:57 AM PDT

This took place in Florida (no Florida man jokes please).

TL;DR: Two random guys open my door, I tell them three times to leave, they don't so I grabbed my gun. But turns out it was maintenance.

Like the title says I pulled my gun on the maintenance for my apartment after they came with without announcing themselves.

I was working from home and I heard a knock, looked through the peep hole and no one was there. So I went back to work and heard another knock as I was leaving my room to go to the door it was opened and two men I've never seen before are standing there. I very loudly tell them to leave, and they just stare ate me. I yell get the fuck out right now and they again didn't say or do anything. One last time I yell I am armed get the fuck out right now and nothing. So I run back grab my gun and point it down the hall way telling them to get the fuck out. This time they close the door and start saying they are maintenance. I call the office and confirm that they are maintenance and get a big ol' idk they could be. Anyways I go out to apologize and beg for forgiveness and ask if I can get them lunch or anything to make things right. Obviously they are pissed, tell me to rightfully fuck off and that they need to report this. This has happened before but I recognized the people who were at the door and they loudly announced themselves before coming in.

At this point I don't think they are calling the cops but I'm freaking out over getting evicted or something. What steps can I take to make sure my ass is covered such as documenting and stuff like that. Is there anything I can do to make sure my property manager calls me before maintenance comes in?

Am I the new Gas Station Bandit?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2021 06:08 AM PDT

So, I was just at a local gas station. I normally pay for gas through the brand's mobile application, then pump my gas. I did my thing on the app and started pumping my gas. For some reason the pump stopped at $20. I thought it was weird, but took out my phone to pay again to fill up the rest of the tank. Just then the attendant comes out to me and tells me that she accidentally sent 20$ to my pump that should have been for someone else. It made sense, so I told her to let me close up my tank, and I would go inside to pay her the $20.

When I went into the store, she told me that she couldn't accept a credit card, and that I HAD to pay her in cash. I told her I had no cash, and she pointed me to the ATM Machine, but I did not have my card with me. I asked her if I could go to work to borrow $20 from someone and I would be back to pay her. This lady started getting aggressive and yelling at me, and told me that if I tried to leave, she was going to call the police and ask to have me charged. I told her she was just going to have to trust me, and I left...

She obviously followed me out of the store, with her cell phone snapping away pictures of me and my license plate, but she never obstructed my path, and I never threatened her with my body or my car in any way that she could claim I tried to assault her on my way out...

Did I commit a crime by leaving the store? I fully intend to go back and pay the $20, but should I take any precautions before going back? Also, If I can't get the cash until tomorrow, is that too long to wait?

    Thanks in advance,

    ETA Location: Florida (Where else?)

UPDATE: I just came back from the gas station. I paid the $20 (CASH) and got a register receipt from the attendant I dealt with earlier this morning. There is no mention of the earlier incident on the receipt, but I will still hold on to it to show that I paid the 20$ Cash.

Landlord let himself in and ate our food...

    Posted: 01 Sep 2021 01:47 PM PDT

    Upstate New York

Not sure what else to say... It happened today. He was apparently going through some stuff, myself and all of my roommates left the house, locked the door. No one else was home, I knew he might be stoppig by, then my one roommate comes home and a bunch of food has been eaten and is left out on the counter. Feeling like we should legitimately look for another place to live. Our lease isn't up for like 10 months. Will we likely be able to get out of it? Maybe he will just let us?

    Edit: locale

Mom who has me bakeracted over state lines repeatedly so I obey her

    Posted: 01 Sep 2021 12:44 AM PDT

Hi, My mom is an evangelical wannabe with memory issues and BPD. She hates me and if I 'step too far out of line' in her world/to her, she'll call the cops and have me bakeracted. I live in NY right now and she lives in FL, she's done this one more time when I lived in CA as an adult (I was 18, I'm now 22).

She calls and asks them to do a welfare check, last time I was working and told them that the situation was that I owed her $50 and I wasn't going to have it till the following week due to payroll issues at my job (truth), was not upset in anyway, and was confused. I was still arrested/detained and then transported to a facility. I'm pretty sure she had one of her friends call. Once she called me at the facility, she basically said 'bet you won't do that again' and laughed. I nearly got fired and was assaulted by hospital staff/LAPD. She did it when I was a kid, too.

She does have my address. She can't do this again, I'm in my final month of my dissertation, my husband is gone for BMT, and I have two animals. Noone else has a key to my apartment and it would be absolutely detrimental to me and my animals if she does this again.

How do I prevent this from happening? I told her that she doesn't care about me, I couldn't take it anymore.

I [25M] am taking a job out of my state, leaving my home unattended for a bit. There is a guy [29M] trying to attempt to use my address as his house arrest location, as well as a way to establish residency. I don’t want this. Will a restraining order protect my property?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2021 09:30 AM PDT

I'm moving out of state. The girl I let stay with me's boyfriend (who I don't like and don't allow near my home anymore) was overheard saying that he could just get his house arrest to list my address as I will be gone in a few weeks. She's also made several statements that sound as if she's not going to just leave in the end either. Her, I can deal with. I can just evict her. Him, i don't know. What's the best course of action to prevent him from being able to either establish residency at my soon to be vacant home or even put my address as his address? Will a restraining order on him by me protect my house too?

Stopped by Loss Prevention before exiting

    Posted: 01 Sep 2021 02:25 PM PDT

So I foolishly put two candy bars in my pocket to grab a drink, as my other hand was full. Went to checkout paid for my drink and got $20 cash back and proceeded to leave.

Just before exiting the stores front door, I was stopped by loss Prevention and they asked me what was in my right pocket, I replied nothing. They told me they watched me conceal two items, I checked, pulled them out and handed them to the LP officer. Mind you this is all within three feet of the front door.

So after I returned the candy bars, I exited the establishment and the two officers grabbed me, and told me "you're not going anywhere", I shoved then off and ran towards my car. The LP officers then tackled me in the parking lot, hit me a couple times as I struggled to get free, and then forcefully took me back into the store and into the back.

Once in the back they told me, we could do this the easy or hard way. That they could call the police, or I could give them $250 and this all goes away. I told them I didnt have $250. They asked how much I did have, I showed them the $20 cashback I got on my beverage purchase. They snatched it from my hand and said that's a good start and would cover the cost of the two damaged candy bars, that I returned undamaged prior to ever leaving the store, and said I have One year to pay them $250 Restitution and that figure comes from the LP officers hourly fee.

Then intimidated me into signing a "Trespass Admonishment" form? Took my wallet from my pocket and went through it and took pictures of my I.D. and Social security card, without consent, and removed my covid mask and pictured my face.

The next day I wake up and can hardly walk, and something is wrong with my back and my head really hurts from it hitting the concrete when I was tackled.

I feel like once I gave the candy back before leaving that means no crime had been committed by myself, and upon leaving was then assaulted, falsely imprisoned, forced to pay excessive fines, violated of my right to privacy and to be protected from unlawful searches and seizures. The store has cameras everywhere, without a doubt everything I've said is on video.

This occurred in Washington State, Do I have a case?

Signed a contract - then found out my employer is being reprimanded for unethical practice.

    Posted: 01 Sep 2021 09:27 AM PDT

1.5 weeks ago I signed an employment contract at a private practice healthcare office owned and run by an MD. This is my first job after graduating from professional school. It has now come to my attention that this employer has a recent history of performing multiple experimental/questionable surgeries on patients and has been reprimanded by the state license agency for gross negligence, unprofessional, and unethical conduct that has resulted in his license to perform surgery to be put on probation for 5 years by the state of Utah (where I am). He has also had his privileges revoked at the hospital he was working at.

I'm new to the area, so the only reason I found out was a new collegue connection suggesting "look into your employer" before starting to work for him. I am in a small close-knit profession where reputation matters, and I am worried working for him would be a bad first career move if everyone is going to side-eye me when I tell them who I am associating with. A significant part of my job success relies on outside referrals from other healthcare providers, and I fear if they know my employer's history, they will not send their patients to me. I am worried about tying my professional identity to this person and it seems like the word is spreading about what has happened with him.

The start date of my employment isn't for another 3 weeks, but the contract uses language that it is effective upon execution (which I assume is signing by both parties). There is 20 mile radius non-compete that would make it more difficult for me to find employment close to home. The contract lists 60 days notice is required for leaving.

Can I break contract without facing legal action? Will a non-compete be enforced if I haven't even provided patient care? Do I need to recruit the help of an employment lawyer? If so, do I just google for one?

EDIT: None of this was mentioned or disclosed to me by my employer. Is this required?

Workmens comp, pedestrian hit me in a work zone. Doing 30 over speed limit. Now I can't work or do my usual daily life activities ect.

    Posted: 01 Sep 2021 09:50 AM PDT

    Hello,

I was in a work accident that involved me getting side blinded by a car driven by a pedestrian. I'm a highway construction worker in Michigan. I was in my work truck. The vehicle that struck me was doing excessive speed 30 miles over the posted limit also he was in a construction zone. I was in my work truck in the enclosed lane. As I went to go to get out of the truck I was struck. I was in the driver seat and was hit from a car doing 80 mph that swerved into my lane to avoid rear ending another vehicle. I have had back pain for close to 2 years now. It happened in 2019. I've been to physical therapy with minimal help and was told I have to stop because the insurance company don't a big enough improvement. I have L5 s1 damaged also 4 lower disk, left shoulder, left knee, and my head also have pain from it still. I now have small nerve damage, migraines, loss of eye sight at times. My left leg goes numb if standing or sitting to long. If I over exter myself I lose eyesight in my left eye temporarily, Weight restrictions, twisted blood vessel in my brain. I have ptsd at times driving due to the accident. Thinking I'm going to get tboned all the time. I've looked for work within my means and cannot find anything, I'm being told to keep looking but I cannot do physical labor anymore. I have a lawyer, but I feel like he's not doing anything for me. I have multiple mris and CT scans done. On top of covid going on. I feel like I'm just being ran around. I know stuff takes time but what am I supposed to do with no income or health insurance now. I'm still confused on how I'm supposed to find work with the injuries I've sustained from the work accident. Also I was terminated from my job because of it. It was not my fault. there was multiple accidents in that location that day due to pedestrian drivers. We have signs put in place for 3-4 miles especially on highways before the actual taper to the lane taken away starts. Not to mention our trucks are lit up like a Christmas tree. No doctor ect want to touch me because of the workmens comp. How am I supposed to be seen ect with no income or insurance anymore since you need 800 hours of work in a union. I am sorry if this is all out of place but between pain, and stress Idk what to do anymore. I feel depressed and defeated that I'm basically crippled the rest of my life and I'm only in my 30s. I need help please.

Am I required to perform next or kin duties after my father’s death?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2021 06:48 AM PDT

NEVADA: I had had no contact with my father in nine years when he passed away 8/7/21. My only other sibling, my sister, had no contact with him in nearly four years before his passing. Are we required to perform next of kin duties such as paying final bills for utilities, filing taxes, etc?

We did inform his apartment complex of his passing and moved his things out, my sister has possession of them and I informed social security. There was no will or other information of what he wanted done when he passed and he never had any assets to speak of except maybe a couple thousand dollars in the bank (he didn't even drive towards the end of his life so no vehicle to speak of and he rented his apartment).

We have no access to any of his utility accounts, banking information.. nothing. Are we required to close these accounts on his behalf? If we don't, are we to be held liable? We do not wish to proceed with going to probate if we don't have to.

Please understand that we are estranged due to abuse, this is not my sister or I trying to shirk responsibility; this whole ordeal has been incredibly painful and has affected us as well as our own families and children. We are doing our best to stay sane but also be responsible for whatever we are required to do.

My sister was physically assaulted at work.

    Posted: 31 Aug 2021 06:18 PM PDT

We live in Georgia and my younger sister (recently turned 18) works at a gym. This gym is a chain and she started picking up extra shifts at other locations outside of the location she was hired at.

My sister works in the daycare part of the gym and she was watching multiple children. From what I've gathered, she had taken a woman's child to the bathroom, went to go check on someone else's baby and the child's mother was upset that she had left him in the bathroom. As soon as my sister had put the baby down, the woman grabbed my sister by the hair and threw her to ground. The husband was also there and basically let his wife attack my sister. Regardless of the context, there was no reason to physically attack my sister, even if the child wasn't capable of using the bathroom on his own.

Naturally, my sister comes home upset and my mother is also upset (extremely pissed) because she feels like not enough was done. No police were called, the lady wasn't even punished by the staff (since the people in charge were gone for the night) and so she wants to get some video proof that my sister was attacked in order to press charges. She talked to some random employee who promised to leave her number for the manager in the morning. My sister is clearly traumatized because she's scared to return to work.

Right now, we're kind of stuck on what to do because my mom is still on mama bear mode and wants to fight everyone and I feel like I'm trying to be the most rational but I honestly don't know what to do outside of comfort my sister.

EDIT/UPDATE: It's been a little over 12 hours since her telling us this and it's morning now. I'm giving her some space right now but last night, she told me she was going to the police station. in the morning. I posted in a response, her boss/manager does support her and the woman that attacked her will no longer be allowed in the gym regardless of what my sister decides to do. Some other things: - My sister is a very left-brained/red person. She likes to work, even if it sucks and WANTED to come to work the next day. After the attack, she literally finished her shift. She's ultimately decided to NOT come to work the day after the attack (aka today at the time posting this) and had decided to go to the police. - She's going to quit in a week anyways which is why the manager will support that decision of quitting; she's going to college. - Mom is still pissed.

Also stop PM'ing me and post your responses here. That's literally the first rule of the subreddit.

Hit by a drunk driver, no injuries aside from cuts and bruises. Do I need to call a personal injury lawyer?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2021 12:07 PM PDT

More detail. I was hit in the front driver side of my vehicle by a drunk driver. He drove across the median and into my lane. The car was totaled. I did not get any major injury aside from soreness and cuts for a few days. I was told to go into the ER that day. Someone drove me. Dr. checked on me and told me that I had no major injuries, prescribed me muscle relaxers and sent me off. I have a report from him.

I was told to still consult a personal injury lawyer even though I have a report that says no major injury and I missed one day of work from the accident. Progressive called and said they would give me 2000 dollars for personal injury, not including the car, relatives said I should refuse it and hire an attourney.

I'm confused as to what I need to do. I have all the documentation necessary to seek an attorney. From what is suggested. I could end up seeing much less money from the cut they take. Some suggest I'm entitled to much more.

    Any suggestions help. Thanks.

Edit: this is in the state of Georgia btw.

I (27M) am being charged a penalty by my apartment building leasing office for not providing written notice to vacate despite me having an email proving otherwise

    Posted: 01 Sep 2021 12:44 PM PDT

Situation recap: I live FL (USA) in a one-bedroom apartment for a one-year lease which ends on 09/27. My lease has typical language that requires "60 days written notice" which I believe is fairly standard. The leasing agent reached out to me in July if we wanted to renew and knowing we have a 60-day notice period, I wrote back in the email that I was not expecting to renew and this would be my formal written notice that my lease was ending. She forwarded me a form to fill out, which I printed, signed, and since it was already printed out, I dropped off at my leasing office in person since they're in the building (and again, there is no language in the lease document that even mentions a form must be submitted much less that the form must be submitted electronically). This, of course, was a huge mistake as I now have no electronic record of me submitting the form. A few days ago, I asked about move-out procedures and etc. since I hadn't heard anything from them. They let me know that I had not given proper notice and they had never received the form and now am liable to pay 1-month rent as a penalty. They claim they never received the form. I argued back that I definitely submitted that form and even if they had lost it, I have an email (that I forwarded) and was responded to by the leasing office that states in the email in written form that I am not planning on renewing my lease. The leasing office ghosted me and hasn't responded but now I'm seeing on my rent payment portal (ActiveBuilding) that I'm being charged for that one-month-rent-penalty. They also have 1/2 of monthly rent in security deposit. I guess my question is what do I do here? I know if I pay that penalty I will never get it back and furthermore I don't think I'm even in the wrong here. If I don't pay, do they have legal claim to send it to collections and ruin my credit? The leasing office until now has never done anything shady like this.

[Los Angeles, CA] I am the Victim of Hit and Run but found the Person who did it, Asked for their info but just discovered they changed their plates after I contacted them.. What should I do?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2021 06:31 AM PDT

I was a victim of a hit & run where a white Winnebago side swiped my Mercedes when I had it parked on the street causing lots of damage but the driver who hit me never stopped but thankfully my neighbors got his license plate info and left it for me in a little note as well as their phone #s as witnesses, I then called the police who told me to file a report online and didn't even want the license plate info.

That being said I searched for the RV myself and just the other day found it parked down the street from me. I knocked on the door but no one was there so I left a note telling them I had their info and know what they did and asked them to contact me before things were escalated again to the next level and the following morning they took off but I just found them again and this time they have a different license plate one from Vermont and no longer Oregon

What is the best way to get this handled when I feel like the police could care less and didn't even ask me for the license plate info the first time right after telling them the accident happened less than 10 minutes ago? Please Help!
