I Believe the Best Hiring is more about Training, Firing, willingness to Contrinute Posted: 15 Sep 2021 01:56 PM PDT I am recently quoted saying that most of today's hiring methods are absolutely arbitrary and based on tradition. While they have some basis, I have found a method that I think will work better (I say "will" because I'm testing and implementing it). Can we agree that if someone is applying for a job, they at least have the ability to do the bare minimum the job requires? Subsequently, this means that their attitude in wanting to succeed in their role can be a huge determining factor. This makes your onboarding and training THE MOST crucial part of your hiring process. The more candid you are during the interview and onboarding in their role, your expectations, and what success for them looks like, the better mentally prepared they will be. After that, your goal as a leader is to train, support, and grow that employee to the very best of your abilities. I truly believe you curate and grow great talent when you give them the right resources, support, and freedom. Now, when you've done ALL of this (and be honest with yourself - did you REALLY provide support and a healthy work environment) and they still don't perform - now you have to terminate. And fast. Transparency is key. As part of your firing process, you need to have been transparent throughout their entire journey at your company. 2 important things to note -
They really should leave on good terms - Help them transition into their new job. People will quickly and in detail recall bad memories if the exit experience is negative. As a leader, our jobs are to lead - and in a company that means actually giving a crap about your people. What does giving a crap look like? - Continual training and advancement - Emotional Support - Providing a diverse and inclusive work environment. Many people have the misconception that leaders only delegate and make sure other people get work done. Be a better leader and watch your company grow. This is why I have decided to allocate the bulk of my resources around hiring to creating an extremely comprehensive onboarding, training, and firing process for new hires. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 15 Sep 2021 08:57 AM PDT I know I'm not destroying the vision, but it does a little feel like it. I know I'm drilling down into the core, but I sure did love the vision more. I'm not a tech person and my point of view is business-oriented. Of course, I would like to offer customers all those nice features I have visualized. [link] [comments] |
Working at a startup as a newgrad Posted: 15 Sep 2021 09:15 PM PDT Hi everyone, I'm graduating college this spring and I'm debating between two offers as an swe. The first is for a larger corporation and the other is a small, recently seeded and on track to be series A tech startup. Obviously theres inherent risk with joining a startup, but generally speaking would you recommend joining a start up as a new grad? [link] [comments] |
Who do you use for video hosting? Posted: 16 Sep 2021 02:07 AM PDT I need to add explainer and marketing videos to our site and I was thinking about hosting them on Youtube first. But then that would mean adverts being shown on our site. So can you tell me who do you use for hosting corporate / business vidoes where no adverts are played. Or are the benefits of youtube hosting outweigh the costs of showing adverts? [link] [comments] |
Customer acquisition and retention cost for a mobility app? Posted: 16 Sep 2021 01:53 AM PDT Hey people, I'm struggling to find some good numbers to base our profitability projections for the next 5-10 years, and I hope some of you might be able to help me. We are evaluating the feasibility of creating a mobile app for charging electric vehicles and I'm trying to figure out what is a realistic estimate for our:
and whether we will have different numbers for different phases of our growth. I know Uber and Lyft's in the US is around the ballpark of US$70, but we are operating in Southeast Asia where costs are typically lower. For CRC, I don't really know where to start to get a realistic figure. These two costs are going to make the difference between us being (marginally) profitable or being very deep in the red (if I go by Uber and Lyft's numbers). What figures should we be looking at, and how are these numbers roughly composed? Mucho gracias in advance! [link] [comments] |
How to get your MVP in front of execs? Posted: 15 Sep 2021 04:40 PM PDT Ok, stupid question, troll if you must… If you have a decent MVP for a site/app and exit strategy is to just sell it off, not necessarily start series funding, scale, etc… whats the key to get in front of and pitch to bigger companies? Talking big social media (Reddit, Twitter, etc). [link] [comments] |
Advice needed in building the e-commerce delivery system. Posted: 15 Sep 2021 11:28 PM PDT I want to build a e-commerce system but I'm confused how to do it. I can onboard the sellers but I'm confused about building the delivery ecosystem as it would be a starting point and I don't have a large enough warehousing. Also this is also making me think of restricting the initial system to my nearby area or the state. Can we restrict the app download to a particular state in a country? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 15 Sep 2021 05:19 PM PDT Hi Everybody, My company is a B2B cap markets focused fintech startup. We're meeting with our very first customer tomorrow for dinner and was wondering what dress code dictates? We are in a west coast tech city, are all from the tech industry and are used to wearing whatever the hell we want pretty much no matter what. I don't think the customer is up tight, we've been talking with them for a long time. [link] [comments] |
Becoming an AI mentor for startups Posted: 15 Sep 2021 10:43 PM PDT Hi All, I am an experienced data scientist and in general love to mentor. I have mentored multiple times people from non technical background for their successful transition into AI. Now I will like to mentor startup founders who come up with AI enabled solutions. I have done it in the past but in an informal way to mentor startup founders in refining their idea and even helping them developing models for free with no strings attached if their ideas were worthwhile. Is there any formal and structured way of becoming a mentor? May be an institution or group where I can have a continuous stream of founders to mentor? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 15 Sep 2021 08:29 AM PDT We build a bootstrapped start-up in the online programming education sector and we're a completely remote team. We were successful enough to understand the value we created, figure out a revenue model and made money from it to prove our hypothesis. After segmenting our initial customers, seems like most of the people were from the US and the UK, but our campaign was mostly focused globally. To niche in our effort with our limited manpower, we wanted to target the US market to increase our margins. If anyone had prior experience doing this in the educational space, would love to hear how you did it. Thank you. [link] [comments] |
What should I look for in a contract with a startup? Posted: 15 Sep 2021 11:29 AM PDT I just interviewed at a startup. It went very well. I would be employee number five in the United States and employee number 34 overall. What are some things I should look for in a startup contract that would be different from joining an established corporation? For example stock options and how they vest if the company gets acquired? Things like that. Please advise [link] [comments] |
Paid Assistance with Customer Discovery Posted: 15 Sep 2021 06:30 PM PDT Where can I find someone who I can pay for help with customer discovery? I've received a lot of useful tips and recommendations, but I'm still not getting any decent data out of my customer interviews. The process is completely foreign to me and I'm struggling to make any progress. I would like to find someone who's able to help me define a set of hypotheses and assumptions, identify potential targets, assist in making contact with them and revising my hypotheses and assumptions as necessary. Is there a service available for this? [link] [comments] |
Push or SMS for notifications with my website? Posted: 15 Sep 2021 02:23 PM PDT Hey loooong time reddit lurker here lol I've been working on developing a website for about 2 years now and it's just about there where I want to start testing it within my community. It's a social site like meetup that has things like chatting, joining, posting, etc... So the notifications are usually within that nature. I always thought I could do a PWA and add push, but silly me I did not know that iOS does not support it. We have email notifications currently set up so if the user receives a notification, they'll get the email that accompanies it.. I was under the impression that this would be enough, however, after talking with a few people, it seems like it's absurd that a site of this nature does not have push notifications. I'm toying with the idea of allowing SMS notifications to remedy this situation, but I don't know if There will be a method to opt-out from SMS, but again, I don't know if this is that important. I'm upset with myself that I decided to do a website (that feels like an app) vs just an app. Most of my research tells me that without a native app, there's no way to support iOS. Looking for input on what's important. Appreciate the help. [link] [comments] |
Tool for Finding Company's Social Media Presence? Posted: 15 Sep 2021 09:28 AM PDT Hi everyone, I'm looking for a tool that can take a company name or URL and identify the social media accounts associated with it. For example, quickly finding all of the platforms that Tesla has a presence on, such as Facebook, Twitter etc. Thanks for your help! [link] [comments] |
I have an MVP but can’t track users — what should I do next? Posted: 15 Sep 2021 04:27 AM PDT I've built a spreadsheet for my MVP. The spreadsheet is fully usable and gained alot of traction in the places I've shared it in. However, because it's a google spreadsheet I can't track how often people are using it and I can only rely on getting qualitative feedback. I have been and am still talking to people who have used the spreadsheet to get their feedback and improve the product. I am now building a custom, low-fidelity version of it so I can track user activity as well as push updates which will take me about 3 weeks. My question is should I keep sharing this spreadsheet out to other users, communities, and platforms knowing I can't track their activity and therefore measure product market fit OR should I wait to finish building the second version and then sharing it? If it is the second, what can I do in the meantime? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 15 Sep 2021 09:30 AM PDT We're a tech startup in the UK and have hired engineers, business analysts and sales managers. I'm a big believer of diversity, while we have great ethnic diversity, we're struggling with gender diversity. I would like to hire more women but I get 1 F applicant for every 10 M applicants. I know females are underrepresented in STEM, so I'm curious if anyone has any advice how to attract more females because I think we're really missing a trick if we end up with an all male team.
