I try to continue my parents’ business. Posted: 15 Sep 2021 11:04 PM PDT Hi everybody! I'm actually gonna share my sad story here. My parents started our family business together years ago. They've opened a small logistics company that transport goods on a railway. My dad used to do all the work while my mum assisted him. Now, it's actually a medium-sized company, and after my parents passed away, I have to continue everything by myself. I don't wanna sell this company, but sometimes I just struggle to have everything under control. My dad passed away when he was just 55 years old, and my mum passed away 2 years after that. Since my dad was in charge of everything, my mum couldn't operate this company just by herself. I was still studying, and my college is far away from home. So, I couldn't really help her out. I just worked for my parents each summer to understand how the business operates and know some basic concepts. So, I already had some idea of how each department should work and what I should expect from staff. I've started analyzing the balance sheets to see our profits, sales, and debts. I've also noticed from the analyses I've conducted that a lot of clients have left. I started to talk with the staff and saw that my parents ignored how some people talk to the clients. I've started contacting some of our former clients just to win them back. Well, I had some success, but I've expected that they all rush to us. Still, I know that now there is a moment on the market to find some new clients to increase our sales. I just need some help with that. I found this company which helps with marketing and choosing a suitable marketing strategy. But I have no experience in working with such companies. I wonder if someone here has some idea to what extent those marketing companies can help me. Besides, what are the probabilities of success and failure? We have some financial troubles, and I need to invest wisely. I know that it might sound unreasonable to seek advice here. But, I have no other place to ask, and I don't feel like I can trust my employees. [link] [comments] |
Any psychology tricks to stop people from canceling appointments? (Without charging a fee) Posted: 15 Sep 2021 09:42 AM PDT This was originally no big deal when the owner was the only person doing treatment, however now that we hired people, if someone cancels we are paying someone to sit around. These are medical workers so its a bit more difficult to ask them to 'clean' during this time. We also don't want to charge a cancelation fee because our competition doesnt charge a fee. (Also, we are a small place, so being friendly is part of the gig) Everyone reschedules, but that isnt the problem, the problem is that we are paying someone that doesnt have a patient to treat. Any ideas? [link] [comments] |
Small businesses with high order returns - how do i survive? Posted: 15 Sep 2021 11:25 PM PDT As a small business, how can I reduce my returns on Amazon? Should I give some discounts to buyers to prevent them from returning? [link] [comments] |
I need a little reassurance about my soon-to-be coffee roastery Posted: 15 Sep 2021 06:11 PM PDT My husband and I are opening up a coffee roastery. They're very confident about it; I, on the other hand, am somewhat worried. I believe in him, and my own skills, but I could use a little reassurance from the crowd. Here's why I worry: -Our savings and our wedding gifts are going into this, no investors. Here's why we don't worry: -We have about 30 years of experience between the two of us I still imagine failure all the time though! I imagine that we won't be able to pick up wholesale accounts, that our connections will fail to give us a sustainable amount of cashflow, etc. Hubs says that we can go for the SBA loan after a few months in business, so I expect I shouldn't be super worried about capital either. Reassure me...or confirm my worst beliefs! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 15 Sep 2021 05:58 PM PDT Hi All, I'm in Florida and I received a call a few days ago about a class action lawsuit against Visa and Mastercard and that most business are entitled to compensation for being overcharged since 2004. I'm sure I'm not the only one that gets calls all the time about asking me to change my Merchant Service provider, so I'm naturally skeptical about anyone asking questions about my provider and promising a better rate, doubly so when a stranger calls and says someone else owes ME money. I was on the phone for about 40 minutes asking questions and trying to figure out if this was a scam or not and after that and doing some googling, it seems that there was definitely a lawsuit, there is definitely a huge settlement ($5.5 billion) and kind of seems not as scammy as I originally thought. Has anyone heard of this or participated in this? Something that left a bad taste in my mouth though was that the person I spoke with told me that to bring our rates down we would need to get a new terminal with a new merch ID, which as he explained, would cut out the 'middle-men' that cause the drastic up-charge on our swipe fees. After hearing this I swung back to the extremely skeptical side and now I'm asking y'all for any additional input. Thanks [link] [comments] |
Posted: 15 Sep 2021 04:37 PM PDT So I REALLY, REALLY want to open a small plant shop. I am a plant collector myself and have been doing so for 4 years. I own a little over 100 tropical house plants and I always get asked why I don't own a plant shop, I always brush the idea off. But I have been putting some thought into it & I am obsessed. I already have a business name and logo! I have been working in the medical field for 6 years and I finally came to my senses it is NOT my passion or my calling. I am working hard to have capital for my business. So pretty much my current job is a stepping stone to my dream plant shop. I have NO idea on where to start. I want to cash flow expenses as much as I can. Any ideas, support, tips are. HIGHLY welcomed. Thank you all so so much!!! [link] [comments] |
Anyone have any idea how I could manufacture my product? Posted: 15 Sep 2021 10:41 PM PDT So basically my business makes RGB lamps and I developed a process to make it out of resin but unfortunately resin has lots of limitations especially when it comes to bubbles unless you've got like a $5000 pressure chamber but at that point you might as well invest that money into a much cleaner way to produce your product. Anyways if anyone is interested in a picture of my product to get a much more accurate idea please send a message! :) [link] [comments] |
Can I open up an LLC business account at 2 separate banks? Posted: 16 Sep 2021 12:27 AM PDT Hi I'm new to being a business owner, and I was wondering if it's possible to have to separate accounts at different banks for the same business? Is that legal? Or can I only have 1 llc business checking account? It's for the same business. [link] [comments] |
Small business loan fraud - sbad treas misc 310 payment Posted: 16 Sep 2021 03:03 AM PDT I had a load taken out fraudulently in my name for $20k and sent to a Chime bank account. Can the funds in this account be sent back, or will they be there? It's been several months since this has happened. thank you [link] [comments] |
Posted: 16 Sep 2021 02:51 AM PDT This dreaded question… I've been running my business for over a year now and I'm slightly concerned about my prices. Compared to other sellers, my price sits somewhere in the middle of £5-£10. The business who sells them for £10 always mentions how if they sold them for any less they'd make no profit. The business who sells them for £5 says nothing. Both businesses sell more than me. I think it would be wise to look at my prices before trying to price new items. All items are made to order sweet treats - Anyone have any tips? A slightly foolproof method to pricing food items properly, & how to cut costs as much as possible (production & postage costs) I'd be super grateful, thank you [link] [comments] |
How to I expense startup costs with no revenue from my winery for several years? Posted: 15 Sep 2021 06:32 PM PDT I'm starting a winery, and while I'm incurring a lot of expenses from cultivation of fruit, to machinery, to equipment, given the length of the manufacturing process, I don't expect to see any revenue for at least two years. I have a source or income through my current, full-time job, which is how I'm funding these start up costs. Given that these are expenses associated with my LLC, but I can't file taxes for my LLC until I sell my first vintage, how should I expense all of these costs? [link] [comments] |
VR party (at home) business idea Posted: 16 Sep 2021 01:48 AM PDT Considering a VR party at home business, some questions. A little bit of background. I recently gave up my 9-5 job to focus on work life balance and have been running a modestly successful e-commerce store selling a product I developed. My business is profitable but don't see if being able to expand significantly beyond its current state so looking to diversify as currently have a significant amount of free time. My eldest has been wanting a VR party for his birthday this year and we have been looking at various options. Most are priced around the £200-250 for 10 people mark which is reasonable enough but when we ask to have the party at our own venue the price goes up significantly. As a result we are considering purchasing 3 or 4 vr headsets and hosting the event ourself and then offering VR sessions/parties in people's homes. Based on the retail cost of a Quest 2 I believe we could run profitable at home/customers venue sessions for around the £50-100 mark, undercutting our competition and giving people an alternative to the VR cafes/studios. I would be looking at purchasing between 3 and 6 headsets initially and am trying to find out the following...
Many thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |
Accounting software suggestions for small business Posted: 15 Sep 2021 01:48 PM PDT Hey all, any recommendations for accounting software? I do freelance work, but also have a website where I sell my art prints and apparel. I'm looking for one that sets aside taxes, tracks expenses and profits, and integrates with Shopify. I'm pretty new to this and have started gaining some traction and new clients, so I need to up my game from tracking it in Google sheets. Thanks for any advice and feedback. @highwestwild [link] [comments] |

Start-Up Costs Tax Deduction. What's the point? Posted: 15 Sep 2021 06:18 AM PDT I keep reading about claiming start-up costs on your business tax's (up to 5,000 deduction). However, what's the difference between doing that and just writing those costs as regular business expenses? For example if my start up costs included software subscriptions, legal/professional services, and office supplies. Why can't I just write all those off under business expenses? Why would I put it under start-up costs? [link] [comments] |
Where to start with expanding my building Posted: 15 Sep 2021 09:29 PM PDT My business has exploded the last couple years to where we need more space and I have no idea where to start. I called up a builder and just left when I told him I didn't have an architect drawings already made. So I called an architect and what I am looking to do he quoted 15k-20k for drawings, but I am not willing to spend that to find out the price of what the building will actually cost to build. I did some online estimators and for the sq footage I am looking for is coming between 100-500k which is a range I am not comfortable with. If its in the 100-300 range I have no prob paying for the drawings but I don't want to spend 20k to find out it's way too much. Where should I start and who should I talk to to get an idea on pricing? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 15 Sep 2021 10:17 PM PDT Hello! I have just started a business called Honest Playroom Designs. I organize and design playrooms, I also offer whole house decluttering and organizing service as well! My business is taking off, and I am wanting to open an online store where my customers can shop for toys, organizing items and art. I have found a couple websites that say they're wholesale suppliers, but the price isn't right. Once I get my resale license, will my options open up? How do I research this? Ideally I'd like to go direct to the manufacturer (Taiwan, India, vietnam) and buy goods and resell them in my store. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I'm In California if that matters ;) thank you for the help! [link] [comments] |
Be the first to share your ideas!!! Posted: 15 Sep 2021 10:00 PM PDT I'm new to the community and have some cash available to build or purchase a business. I come from a Real Estate/Sales background that has nourished me for a decade, but I've grown too comfortable and would like to expand into entrepreneurship and owning my own business. I've turned down great opportunities in my industry as it is a traditional industry that is cyclical, and I'm looking for something new/trendy that I can grow fast in the next decade. I would love some ideas on what to do and start as I'm building my first business. [link] [comments] |

What % would you give a promising inspector partner in China? Posted: 15 Sep 2021 09:24 PM PDT My research indicates many "transactional" inspector relationships are 5% to 10% of the product cost. I want to have a true partnership and incentivize the inspector to care about the health of my business back in the states and think net profit although higher, is more aligned with a long term prospect. He owns his own plastic bag factory and has a rolodex of local contacts should I want to branch out and has been diligent and quick moving. I have struggled with a good %, and suggested at one point 10% of net profits. Is that too high? What arrangements do you have with the people you work with in China? They will:
Thus far:
They won't:

Advice on Funding a New Franchise Purchase Posted: 15 Sep 2021 09:10 PM PDT My wife and I are starting our first business with a new franchise. Is it better to fund through a ROBS with our 401k or take out a new business loan? [link] [comments] |
Anyone else having Gusto issues? Posted: 15 Sep 2021 08:33 PM PDT Hey all, I've read plenty of Gusto success stories on here so I decided to sign up for their service. I own a small company with only a few employees, so it was relatively easy to set up. Recently we decided to offer more benefits to some of our employees so I went through the proper channels at Gusto. Crickets. I reached out again. Crickets. So I finally called customer support and got a real person on the phone who had no idea about any of the benefits I was trying to add. They opened a customer support ticket which *shocker*, never got answered. I've read a few online reviews recently (like within the past month or two) that are saying that Gusto is screwing up IRS filings and not withholding the correct amount of money, which could cause big problems for our employees. We've also promised certain benefits (that Gusto said they offer), which have not come to fruition. I don't want this to hurt the company morale. Needless to say, I'm thinking about switching to a different payroll software. Anyone else having issues with them? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 15 Sep 2021 08:19 PM PDT TL:DR at the bottom Being found on the internet has become almost mandatory for most local, small, service based businesses. How do you do that, get found by customers? - by having a good website that is regularly optimized for search engines. However, finding a reliable AND affordable SEO service provider has become quite the nightmare. Reputable SEO companies ask for large sums of money per month and you see results after many months (sadly, such is the nature of SEO and Google and it is not affordable for most small businesses) OR, you get a million cold calls a day from people who promise to get you on page 1 of Google for 99 bucks a month - clearly a waste of your time and money. Somewhere between the two is a sweet spot which will likely work great for a small business - A reasonable monthly investment on SEO and a great return on that investment However, it is very very difficult for small business owners with little knowledge of this, to find this sweet spot service provider. I know, because I like to think I was such a provider. I worked with several local businesses across N. America, most of whom are still my customers. However, it was also a pain for me to sell my services - why am i charging a thousand when the other cold caller promised the same thing for 200, when will i see the results, how will i know when i see results, can you not guarantee the results? Why not, the 200$ guy did etc etc. I stumbled upon a separate 'arrangement' model, something that a few forward thinking providers of digital marketing services have been doing for a few years now, but it's still not so common - we do all the work upfront, at our own time at basically no cost to the business owner. After our digital assets are optimized and well ranked, and customers start reaching out to us, we connect them to 1 business owner exclusively. If in a month we send you 10 customer phone calls, it costs you X, if we send 2, it costs you 0.2X and 0 if 0. You don't care for SEO, your website being built good or not, nor do you have to pay a hefty monthly fee while crossing your fingers and praying that 6 months from now calls will start pouring in. Simply put, I get you a pizza and ask you a slice of it. If I get you 10 pizzas I ask for 10 slices but if I get you no pizza, I cost you nothing. Which is not how SEO services work, but is way way better. Small business owners are paying directly for value - us competent (if I may say so myself) digital marketers don't spend time on sales anymore because we're no longer selling services, we're selling tangibly valuable 'referrals' TL:DR - i don't sell monthly SEO services anymore. I bring leads, actual customers looking for those services. It is A LITTLE bit like HomeAdvisor/Angie's list etc. but much much better because the leads are exclusive to one business owner and they're always legit and relevant (folks who've used the million/billion dollar lead generating companies will know what I mean) [link] [comments] |
