My income went from 50k to over 450k this year. What are the chances I’ll be audited?

    Posted: 16 Sep 2021 02:49 PM PDT

Hi all I started a restoration company earlier this year (water damage restoration) and I've been extremely blessed to have the business explode in my first few months of operation. Thanks to a freeze storm that happened earlier in February in Texas, business exploded.

Admittedly, I haven't kept great records of all my expenses, and I stupidly deposited all of that money in my personal checking account. I was operating as a sole proprietor. I recently opened up an LLC with a new business checking account.

My expenses are very low quite honestly. I probably have about 50k of expenses out of that 450k.

What are the odds of me being audited because of the sudden drastic increase in income?

    How are people so consistent?

    Posted: 16 Sep 2021 09:54 AM PDT

Hey all, I'm not even sure if this is the right sub for this, but I want to get some perspective from other business owners. This could be classified as more of a mental health question in running a business I suppose.

Im building/running a creative agency helping businesses develop their branded identity. I absolutely love what I do and feel this is what I'm supposed to be doing with my life, however, I feel like my productivity is all over the map from day to day and it's exhausting.

Some days I'm able to sit down and crank out like 12 hours of work, yet some days I find it really hard to just sit down and work.

On those days, I'll have some design or video work to do, I'll sit down and stare at my screen for 10 minutes, do nothing, go play chess for an hour, come back, work for 15, go do anything else, etc. I know I have to work but something in me physically prevents myself from actually sitting there and working. I'm not sure how to describe it. I'll sit down and get… almost anxious?

All this is on top of running the business side of things too. Trying to grow, gain clients, fill out my team, etc, I find it really hard to not get overwhelmed and shut down for a day or two.

I guess a better way to ask is; what systems of personal organization have you found works for you? How do you balance being your own boss and managing your time? Sometimes I feel so scatterbrained, and other days I'm laser focused. I don't get how people are so consistent in their day to day. Any advice would be appreciated!

Edit: I'm trying to read through every response but I just wanna say thanks to everyone who has given solid advice. It really means a lot!

    Review management??

    Posted: 17 Sep 2021 02:52 AM PDT

I'm trying to find a company and/or site that I can use to send my clients an email asking for a review but allowing them to write one review and choose to post it across multiple platforms(Facebook,Google, yelp, etc) I mean it's already hard enough to get clients to actually leave a review but trying to get them to leave multiple reviews across multiple platforms?...... Forget about it!!! I was almost certain that there was a few different sites that did this very thing but I'm having trouble locating any of them. If anybody knows of any and could let me know the names that would be GREATLY appreciated, or any programmers....... you could fill a much needed position within the marketing/business world.... I know I can't be the only one with this issue! Thanks!!

Is it possible to have a successful business without knowing how to do the service being provided?

    Posted: 16 Sep 2021 03:22 PM PDT

For example, if I want to have an electrical maintenance business, do I need to have knowledge of electricity or is it enough to know about management and finance, and hire electricians?

How can I grow my logo design business?

    Posted: 16 Sep 2021 10:55 PM PDT

    Hello guys,
I've worked as a freelancer on some sites but they are not consistent and totally unpredictable. So is there any way I can earn a predictable income through my logo design business? As I am confused and don't know where to start. If there is any experienced person in the field to guide. It will be a huge favour.
    Thank you

Just got a Business Credit Card for my Small Business. How long should I wait before I ask for a raise in Credit Limit?

    Posted: 16 Sep 2021 10:59 PM PDT

Hi, first time poster here. Anyway I applied & received my first Business Credit Card, Chase Ink. So happy to have it as it will make tracking purchases so much easier.

While it's a small problem & workable my Credit Limit is a measly $3000. My business, a food truck can easily spend $2500 a week in food costs alone when we have a busy week. Ideally my partners & I would like to have the limit at least be $5000 so we don't have to schedule a payment every single week.

I have a feeling there isn't a clear cut answer since I assume Chase's limit is based on our personal credit scores. I'm hoping in a few month's time Chase will be willing to raise our credit limit after seeing how much activity our cards use.

How Do I Start a News Website?

    Posted: 17 Sep 2021 12:16 AM PDT

I had an idea for a News website and was wondering how I would go about it. Would it be possible to start for little to no money? I'm just curious if I'm in over my head or if it's something achievable with pretty much no startup budget and no experience in the News field.

Edit: I've decided that it's probably best that I start a blog or newsletter instead since I can't afford to hire staff so I'll be doing everything by myself. I'm leaning towards a blog, but I'm not 100% sure if that's the right choice.

    Where do I begin

    Posted: 16 Sep 2021 07:44 AM PDT

Hello my name is Brett. I'm 29 and I'm looking to start a sport apparel store in my local town. A few years back the sports store I worked at closed down because corporate didn't think we made enough money. Even though we made roughly $300,000 a year. Since we've closed it's been about 4 years now and if you want to go to any sports store it's roughly 30 minutes away. I want to open up a store that sells sports apparel and equipment but o honestly have no idea what to do. I've tried looking up what to do but even that confuses me. I honestly don't know where to start or what to do. Someone told me I should get a business advisor or a business lawyer who would get me started and help me but I'm kinda weary about that. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Also idk if this helps but I live in Florida.

Did I Make The Right Decision Despite Losing The Client?

    Posted: 16 Sep 2021 06:02 PM PDT

Over the past week I drew the interest of a local landscaping business for SEO services. Now this client was somebody who had to be really be worked on as the owner of the business wasn't a big believer in online marketing or SEO services and felt that many of them were scams as he had be been burned by bad marketing in the past and had known other landscapers with similar experiences. We emailed back and forth for a few days and after showing him examples of my past successful clients he finally was ready to jump on a phone call. This phone call lasted about 2 hours and we discussed all the visions for his business, how his business is doing currently, and even his past experiences he had with "cheap overnight SEO services" where he had paid someone overseas and was ghosted almost immediately.

It hurt my heart to hear this and it was one those "you get what you pay for scenarios"; however, I knew his business was struggling and wanted to explain to him how SEO worked and would even go as far as sending him a 10 minute audit walking him through a proper SEO strategy and comparing his current SEO prowess to those businesses around him. He emailed me back very hopefully with a new perspective on SEO saying how glad he was and how he saw the potential in SEO and would consider me when the time is right to continue as he currently isn't a position where he could hire an out of house marketing team yet but thanked me for my services and educating him on SEO.

Now I know many of you are probably just saying that he didn't even watch the video and probably just told me those things to get rid of me, and although that may be true I would like to think that I potentially helped someone from getting scammed on fake SEO services moving forward and even changed a perspective on how people view the SEO industry as a whole. So did I make the right decision? Many people in the past have told me to never do things like this for free as it will often end up the same way it played out here.

How do you find a mastermind group?

    Posted: 17 Sep 2021 02:28 AM PDT

    Hi,

This question has really bothered me for a long time and I was wondering if I could get some insights or suggestions on how to find a mastermind group of people that share the same inspiration and passion as me (or somewhere in between). I go to university and it's hard for me to look for people who are excited about business or are wanting to invest. How am I supposed to find people that share the same passion as me in this setting? at this stage?

    Thank you.

How do I find a bookkeeper?

    Posted: 16 Sep 2021 01:37 PM PDT

I am the sole proprietor of my LLC and I've been doing everything myself with regards to my bookkeeping and taxes. I bring in well under 100k a year. I desperately want to expand operations, but what is holding me back is I have zero desire/knowledge/ability to handle more complicated finances. How do I find a bookkeeper or CPA? I don't even know what I need to do or how I would hire and pay someone.

First time at a local shop

    Posted: 16 Sep 2021 11:54 AM PDT

Hi! I've had a small business on Etsy for the past few years and recently decided to start branching out and contacting local shops to see if they wanted to do consignment with us. One shop got back to us and said they don't do consignment but would like to buy wholesale from us.

I recently got a tax id but I'm trying to figure out what else I really need to do before selling wholesale. I might be in over my head but I was hoping if some of you could point me in the right direction of how to be more of an actual business. Do I need an LLC? Sorry if this isn't really a question… I guess I just don't know where to begin after only doing online sales. I live in NYC. Thanks in advance!

    Should I hire a publicist?

    Posted: 16 Sep 2021 07:41 PM PDT

Hey! I started a custom songwriting company called Fine-Tuned Custom Songs at the beginning of COVID. I've written over 600 custom songs, but would like about 70-100 more orders to hold me over for a couple months. I think it would be great to get a magazine, blog, podcast feature to attract more customers. It seems hard to get a foot in the door without hiring a pricey publicist. Who has experience in this and could lend a few pointers? Thanks!

Replicating a successful business from a home country (developing) in the West/UK?

    Posted: 16 Sep 2021 02:36 PM PDT

Hey guys, could you please shoot at this idea with all the brutality you've got? I'm trying to get some perspectives.

There's a great company making clothing (underwear) in my home country in Eastern Europe. I think the quality is great. Branding is fantastic. It's on par with meundies, etc.

I've got zero experience with entrepreneurship but a relatively high paying accounting job in the UK to help me finance a franchise if the owners would be willing. I'm fairly confident I can sort out the logistics for deliveries and import duties. Family in my home country can help on the ground if needed.

Is this a terrible idea to try? Will I be laughed out of the room if I asked them about franchising?

As I said I'm totally new to entrepreneurship but so was everyone else at some point. Happy to answer any questions as I tried to keep this brief.
