Long time customer asking trade secret sources, how to respond

    Posted: 08 Sep 2021 05:08 PM PDT

    Hi guys,

One of my long time customers that I wholesale products to is asking me where I have my products made. They claim they are to start a brand of a different style but want to carry the same line of goods. We've had a business relationship for several years now and they're a buyer for a local retail chain.

My company does not give out any information where or how our products are made and I feel this person crossed a line by asking. We have invested a lot of time and money into our product sources and it feels so crushing to just give it away. 😔

How is the best way to approach this situation kindly without being off putting or rude? I don't want to ruin our professional relationship.

    Thank you!

    Airport Restaurant kiosk

    Posted: 08 Sep 2021 10:21 PM PDT

Does anyone here own or run an airport kiosk or airport restaurant? I am particularly interested in how owners staff and run multiple locations in separate airports??? I am interested in opening a food business in an airport in a different state than I currently live.

    Taking action

    Posted: 09 Sep 2021 03:50 AM PDT

    Hi,

It's been a while that I've wanted to start a small online bussiness on the side, who knows, perhaps turn it into my full time income in the future. However, having a comfortable work for the state and not really having the "need" has made me procrastinate it for months, years now. I've done tons of researching and reading on different niches to never really take off on any.

    I currently have:

    - A decently sized basement that I can use as warehouse.

    - A bored and unemployed mum who's willing to deal with all packaging and stuff.

I am thinking about sourcing any high selling item (I like the adventure/outdoors niche) and start selling on amazon/ebay/fb so that I can have a real taste of the process and its struggles instead of wasting my time reading and watching videos about it.

    What are your thoughts?

advertising opportunity - does this sound worth it?

    Posted: 09 Sep 2021 03:08 AM PDT

i recently started up a small candle making business & have come across an advertising opportunity i'm not sure is worth it or not - purely because i'm not too knowledgeable on advertisement.

a well known parents magazine has offered me a heavily discounted rate for being included in both their magazine & being shouted out on social media. for $1379, i would be included in four publications of their magazine, 52 social media shoutouts on Facebook to an audience of 300k, featured in an article on their website - i put myself forward and they liked the look of some of the candles i make as i make both pregnant torso candles and recycled jar candles - which they've said that their audience would love the sound of.

usually, all up the digital package alone is worth about 6k and the publication would come to $650ish per issue, this magazine/publisher is super well known in the parenting community and advertise mum owned businesses as well as baby based businesses.

i recently just got a fantastic bonus from work and am wondering if it would be a good idea to put that towards my business to pay for this package? does it sound like a good idea or am I looking at things through rose tinted glasses

Did any specific classes help you greatly in starting up and running your small business?

I'm thinking about picking up some free courses or applying for some individual college classes in order to broaden my knowledge base in the areas of business management, business law, and marketing. Were there any courses that you've taken that have thoroughly helped you in your entrepreneurial ventures or business creation?

Winning Local SEO Against Established Players: Secrets Tips

    Posted: 09 Sep 2021 01:55 AM PDT

We all know competing with a long-established company in a local market is no child's play. Without sharp strategies, it's hard to win against businesses and service providers already established in the local market.

Since I have helped a lot of local business owners compete against established rivals through local SEO, I am here with my personal experience.

    Let's dig into this.

    Start with GMB

If you haven't already set up your Google My Business listing, this is a great place to start boosting your local SEO. Google My Business is considered to be a top influencing factor in terms of local search. While creating your GMB listing, make sure you completely fill your profile and tap local keywords related to your niche.

Google My Business also has the feature to publish short posts. Create them to tell Google that your listing deserves to be on the top spot.

    Get local with your content

If your website is the sun, your content is the gravity that will pull the visitors. Broader content may appeal to a global audience but if you wish to target a local audience, create local content on specific topics depending on your industry.

Publishing may also range from a blog for your website to content for your social media channel, whatever makes the most sense for your company. Here are 2 unique ways to win local SEO against bigger rivals:

    1. Make direct comparison pages or blogs: A lot of new businesses competing with a long-established player make comparison blogs, videos, and pages to lure potential customers. These are quite easy to rank. Sometimes, if the rival is impulsive, it will create a post in reply giving you free publicity.
    2. Create company listicles: This is also something that newbies do. Creating a post like 'Top ______ Alternatives in CA for Big Savings' can help put your brand on the customer's radar. Keep your at the top with contact details. List others without contact info.

    Tap unique locations

If your business is active across the state, consider creating separate location-based pages. These location-based pages will exist on your website and will rank for unique location-specific searches. This will help optimize your business for multiple locations and will boost local SEO dramatically.

A lot of businesses make the mistake of trying to capture a lot of locations through one page. That hardly works nowadays!

Please note that this is what I have learned from my personal experiences while working in a marketing agency for the past 2 years. Let us know in the comment section what you think about this.

    Thanks

Hosting and management for open source

    Posted: 09 Sep 2021 01:10 AM PDT

We did a proper software selection process and found all we needed completely free in the open source section (this was surprising to me as I had thought open source meant somewhat unfinished and low quality). This is great as we expect to save over 5k pa on software license fees. The next struggle is to find someone to help us with hosting and security. We are too small to employ an IT specialist. I know that there are many specialized providers for specific servers (eg WordPress), we would however prefer to have someone handle all our servers for a small subscription fee, while we still own them ourselves. Cloud hosting is cheap—-there should be no issue there, there just seems to be no provider of the kind (or at least not one that would not consume the whole savings of 5k pa for their services) What do you normally do in such case? Should we just try to hire someone for IT part time? I can't image it would be more then 1-2 hours of work per month for them though.

Our point of sales system keeps great records of daily sales. Are there other programs in which I can safely and simply compare expenses and COGS vs Income and other basics? Money is deposited next day guaranteed, so I do not want to deal with accounts recievable / payments to deposit, etc.

    Thinking about a shuttle business.

    Posted: 08 Sep 2021 03:13 PM PDT

In phoenix az. We have a large retirement community and a few casinos. I used to hang out with an old fellow who would go about once a month to gamble. I imagine there are plenty who can't drive themselves or would rather not drive, but would like to go to the casino.

It's about an hour-ish drive from the old folks side of town to the casinos.

There's also a discount cigarette place in that area, cheapest smokes in town- indian reservation taxes them differently. Thought I'd add that store in as a stop on the way back from the casino.

I can afford a shuttle bus or a big van.

Not sure what else I would need besides licensing and insurance.

How would I gauge interest/find customers? Call retirement homes? Put flyers at local bulletin boards?

There are definitely a few unknowns for me here.

Similar ideas I have include a party bus (for pub crawls) or a shuttle to vegas (5 hour drive) with a next day turnaround- either on weekends or scheduled to coincide with raiders games.

Double (Triple) Import Tariffs (Estonia, Germany, US, China)

    Posted: 09 Sep 2021 12:14 AM PDT

    Hi,

How can I avoid paying import tariffs more than once?

I'm launching a product that I'll be selling internationally from a US-based pick-and-pack center. The components on the bill of materials are being manufactured in China. We're a company based in Estonia. The parts will be shipped from China to Germany for assembly. Then shipped from Germany to the US for warehousing. Then shipped to the customer throughout much of the world.

My general understanding is, though items will have to cross many economic borders, the shipments should only be charged a tariff once: when imported into the country where the final consumer of the product lives. Is that correct?

Now, my original sample shipped from China to Germany, and customs charged a fee for importing it. My fear is that they will do this again when the actual bulk order comes-in. And then again at the US-border. And then again when it is imported again into the EU for (eg) a French customer.

How do I properly navigate these international logistics between China, Estonia, Germany, and the US to ensure that these shipments are not getting taxed more than once?

Invoicing Service - Someone That Handles the Complete Process?

    Posted: 08 Sep 2021 04:39 PM PDT

Is there a service which totally handles invoicing for companies?

Like they work out how much should be invoiced.

    Make the invoice.

    Send the invoice.

Chase up anyone who doesn't pay

I found a bunch of great invoicing platforms but I have to put in some manual work and I want the process to be totally hands off.

    Can someone suggest a solution?

Small Business Out of State Address Change

    Posted: 08 Sep 2021 03:13 PM PDT

    Hey guys.

I currently run a coaching company, entirely remote. I'm incorporated in Massachusetts but just moved to Utah for the next 6 months.

If I change my physical business address in order to receive (the small amount of business mail I get) to my new Utah address, will that cause any problems in my business operations?

Beyond changing the address, is there anything I need to do legally?

    Thanks!

    Line of Credit Recommendations

    Posted: 08 Sep 2021 11:18 PM PDT

I own a real estate business and am looking for recommendations on the best banks/lenders to go with. The company was created in June of 2019, so it is a relatively new business, and we currently have 2 credit cards… one with BHG with a limit of $1,000 opened Jan of this year, and another one with Amex with a limit of $2,000 opened Feb of this year. Balances are always paid off monthly. I do business banking with Wells Fargo but I tried applying for a credit card as well as a line of credit in January of this year (prior to applying for BHG) and was denied for both. Quite frankly I've learned to hate Wells Fargo and am not looking to open a CC or LOC with them anymore. Can y'all suggest me some solid choices for business line of credit? TYIA

    Market Research for small businesses

    Posted: 08 Sep 2021 07:21 PM PDT

Not trying to promote so mods I hope I understood the rules correctly.

Long story short, this past year I have successfully integrated software with POS systems that allow consumers to order products or services with their voice assistants on their phone, in their home, or in the car. This is hands-free ordering, reservations, payments, etc. *We don't have customers yet*

How would you want to be contacted for a 5-minute survey? Email, phone call, walk-in?

How do you account for gifts as a company? Can a non-member, non-employee donate money to an LLC or corp?

    Posted: 08 Sep 2021 06:44 PM PDT

I'm not yet a business owner. not trying to put the cart before the horse. I'm in the very early stages of planning and hopefully starting something early next year in Wisconsin. I'm trying to clarify little things like this beforehand. Specifically, someone not otherwise associated with the business "donating" funds to the business.

When I look this up I see a lot of stuff about how you can create an equity contribution to your own LLC, donations for charity and other things, but not quite what I'm looking for. Can someone, whether it's family, a friend or neither, gift money to a company? How would you account for that? Or rather, would you consider it a personal gift and then give it to your company as an equity contribution?

The reason I thought about this was because of kickstarter or other startup funding platforms- which I'm assuming is accounted for totally differently. But what if you receive money, whether it's a friend or someone just being generous enough to help you fund your venture?

Please Explain Basic Email Concepts To A Noob

    Posted: 08 Sep 2021 10:30 PM PDT

This is a very newbie question here so please bear with the post. This is more ecommerce related but didn't have enough comment karma to ask there, so would appreciate any assistance.

What is the first kind of email service, software or integration that you need to set up for your store?

You open a Shopify page. Then a customer orders a product. Does Shopify send the customer the order confirmation or is it some other program you have to link.

Let's say a customer emails you, where does that email go to? Do you need to connect a separate gmail or outlook email account and manage your customer emails from there?

Your next steps would be to get something like ZenDesk that makes everything more organized. Then you get programs like MailChimp and Klaviyo, which are only for marketing emails, like sales, new product releases, etc. Is that correct?
