Please use this thread to have discussions which you don't feel warrant a new post to the sub. While the Rules for posting questions on the basics of personal finance/investing topics are relaxed a little bit here, the rules against memes/spam/self-promotion/excessive rudeness/politics still apply!

Have a look at the FAQ for this subreddit before posting to see if your question is frequently asked.

Since this post does tend to get busy, consider sorting the comments by "new" (instead of "best" or "top") to see the newest posts.

To dividend or not to dividend?

    Posted: 07 Sep 2021 03:59 PM PDT

Short background: We are hoping to retire in about 5 years, in our early forties, with two elementary school age kids.

I have been avoiding dividend paying stocks/funds because I don't like that the dividend amount fluctuates over time. When we are retired it's going to be threading a needle to sell just enough to stay in the 0% capital gains bracket and to maintain the ACA subsidy we want, so I want to have full control over our income. I would be worried that dividends would make my income fluctuate more than I want. But everyone loves dividends so I am thinking about this the wrong way?
