DUI More Than Six Years Ago Insurance

DUI More Than Six Years Ago

    Posted: 19 Sep 2021 12:58 AM PDT

I was arrested for DUI in July 2015. I have been sober since December 2015. I resumed driving in spring of 2018. I paid an arm and leg for two years. Price has since dropped but it's still expensive. My record has been mostly clean since (one speeding ticket 10kph over).

A google search told me that if a DUI happened more than six years ago I am not required to tell a new insurer about it. This is from a Canadian website and I'm Canadian. So if I call up a new insurer to ask about auto insurance and they ask me "have you ever had a DUI" am I allowed to say no? Can any insurers out there tell me what to expect or how to handle this?

    Insurance company thinks I'm dead

    Posted: 18 Sep 2021 08:55 AM PDT

I've had a term life insurance policy for many years. Yesterday, I received a letter in the mail address to "The Estate of (my name)."
I opened it and there was a letter from the insurance company stating "We have received notification of the death of (my name), please accept our sincerest condolences." It then gave instructions to fill out the enclosed claim forms. I do plan on calling them first thing Monday, but how could something like this have happened? In general how are insurance companies notified of a policy holder's death? Nobody, expect for my credit card company that I'm aware of knows I have this policy so I have no idea how they would have been notified. The only thing I could think of is that I have a rare name and there was a person with the exact name as me, but he passed away around 3 years ago, so there is the possibility that may be the cause of the mix up. Also, I did check my latest credit card statement and the monthly premium was not listed on it. TIA Edit: Since the Bot is asking me to provide location, Massachusetts, United States

Hit a Parked Car and Need Some Insight (Bay Area, CA, US)

    Posted: 18 Sep 2021 10:26 PM PDT

New driver (literally licensed as of Sept 2) at the age of 21 and 11 mo.

Car: Toyota Prius C 2016 persona series (green highlights)

I live in San Francisco proper and decided to challenge myself by crossing the Bay Bridge. I went to a shopping center and tried to park in a spot I knew I could fit because prius C's fit virtually anywhere for a 5 seater.

Unfortunately, I turned into the underbumper of a red Toyota 4runner SUV.

    DAMAGES

The other party: Quite a few minor cosmetic scratches and one paint-chipped area for the other party.

My car: My bumper was loosened a bit and couldn't be popped back into place. Cosmetic red paint scratches onto my green highlights. I DIDN'T NOTICE THESE UNTIL 10 MINS AFTER SHE DROVE OFF (hopefully it doesn't seem sketch, but I think the red paint marks show I didn't inflict these upon myself)

    AFTERMATH?

Since this was my first time and I'm a very green driver (and super responsible in general), I stayed. I gathered info. She gathered info from me. I took pictures.

She called Geico and they told her to call back on Monday. However, because I have Geico Mobile, I filed my claim immediately.

Did I do the right thing? What are possible outcomes?

    Much appreciated

Move Auto Policy Start Date To Earlier Date

    Posted: 18 Sep 2021 10:21 PM PDT

I'm using an independent agent and I decided to switch my auto policy from Nationwide to Germania. My new policy (Germania) is supposed to start on 9/29 and my Nationwide policy ends on 11/29. So I would think my agent would cancel my Nationwide policy on 9/29. I've just got a check from Nationwide refund my premium (which should be for 2 months from 9/29 - 11/29). I was curious and logged in to Nationwide website and it says my auto policy is cancelled. I don't know if my agent accidentally cancelled the Nationwide policy immediately. If that's the case then I won't have coverage from now to 9/29. Is it possible for me to request Germania to move the effective date of my new policy to earlier so I have coverage now and I'll pay the pro rated premium? Or can I request Nationwide to reinstate my auto policy until 9/29? It's late now so I can't call Nationwide or Germania and my agent's office is close on Sunday so I won't be able to call her until Monday.

What can life insurers do if the premiums for a particular product was found to be overly low, some years after starting to sell them?

    Posted: 18 Sep 2021 10:10 PM PDT

Was rear ended, forced into another vehicle, and at fault driver hasn’t contacted their insurance company yet, 4 days after accident.

    Posted: 18 Sep 2021 05:52 PM PDT

    I'm in NYS.

I was fully stopped at a red light, behind another vehicle. I was rear ended and my car hit the car in front of me. We all exchanged insurance info, driver's license, etc. (took pics of it all. Police officer was driving by a few minutes after the crash and stopped to check on us. Stayed until the last person (guy who hit me) left. Officer said no report was necessary, just exchange info, which we were doing.

I called my insurance company and gave all the info I have. Then I called the at-fault's insurance and they said he hasn't contacted them yet, but began the claim with the information I gave them - all parties involved's information, details, etc. I was told where to bring my car for an estimate to get things moving along, and did so the next day.

At-fault's insurance called me the day after the estimate and informed me the driver still hasn't called. They left a message.

I received a text from the at-fault asking me to call him when I get a chance yesterday while I was at work and didn't have access to my phone. Later on I texted back saying I'll call him a 5pm when I get out of work. He replied "my insurance company said to not talk because a claim has been filed. Sorry to have bothered you." I replied "Ok, no problem."

I called his insurance company again today, and was told he hasn't contacted them. They've left 2 voicemail messages and have mailed a letter.

My car is a piece of crap that's a temporary car until my actual car is fixed (parts supply constraints, long story). It's worth about $3k Kelley blue book private party, so it's not going to take much for it to be totaled. Body shop guy said "it's most likely a total loss." His system was down, but did as much as he could and will contact me with an estimate once it's back up.

Since the driver lied to me about "my insurance company told me not to talk to you" because he obviously didn't call them, I'm pretty sure he's not going to call them. He's probably hoping it'll all go away. 18 year old kid driving dad's car, both are listed as drivers on the insurance card.

What should I do here? His insurance company won't pay out a claim without speaking to him first. I don't have collision on my car, so they're most likely not going to cover it and go after him for reimbursement.

Also, I really want to text him and simply say "according to your insurance company, you haven't contacted them yet and they have tried to reach out to you. If you do not contact them by end of business on Monday, I will contact an attorney." Do you think that'll push him to call, or will it motivate him not to call?

Under 26 with a new job that offers health insurance plan, can I still be covered under my parent's plan (Covered California)?

    Posted: 18 Sep 2021 01:44 PM PDT

Hello. I recently got a job that offers health insurance, but I don't want to take it because I won't be able to use Kaiser hospitals anymore. My parents have Covered California and I was wondering if I was able to stay under their plan until I turn 26, or will I be kicked off since my company offers a plan? I read this from the Covered California website, but I don't know if this pertains to me since I'm still under 26. I appreciate any help that I can get, thank you!

UPDATE: Just read this and it seems like I can? Still would appreciate some confirmation because I don't know if Covered California has different rules than other insurances.

Should I let my auto insurance know when a minor scratch?

    Posted: 18 Sep 2021 08:42 PM PDT

It was in an at-fault accident at the parking lot. We scratched the other party's car by accident. It was a minor scratch. We exchanged numbers and other info. We decided to go with the insurance instead of paying out-of-pock so We gave the other party our insurance info. In this case, should we notify our insurance company or should we let the other party to file the claim? How many days do we have to file the claim and how many days do they have to file the claim?

If for some reasons the other party forget about it or not make the claim but we actually tell our auto insurance company, will we have the record or will our future premium be possibly increased?

    Edit: We have Auto-Owner Insurance

    Mahler Reduction

    Posted: 18 Sep 2021 04:14 PM PDT

I recently learned about Mahler Reduction and I have a lot of questions. I don't know if anyone can answer them.

    Why was Mahler Reduction enacted?

Does this help the insured at all?

Isn't an insurance provider more than capable of subrogating PIP/MedPay themselves? Do we force the customer to recover that and pay it back if they don't have an attorney? Before Mahler how was this handled?

Is this a Washington state only thing?

I would like to understand if it helps people or if it's just something attorneys take advantage of to get more money from settlements.

Buying my first car, how to go about it the right way?

    Posted: 18 Sep 2021 11:22 AM PDT

I'm 19F, hoping to get my first car, problem is I still don't have my license (my parents don't have a vehicle to pass inspection) so in order to do that, I need a new car first but in order to get a car I need a license, or so I believed.

I've been wanting a 2015 mustang car that I saw on an car selling app at a small dealership. I already saved up around 5,000$ down payment and my credit score is around 750. Mustang sells for ~18,000$.

However, how do i go about it? I've been told I could partner with my mom's insurance that way insurance isn't that bad on my case and I would be the one buying the car, it's kinda like joining together but it doesn't really affect me, say her credit is bad but mine is good, my credit isn't affected..something like that but I don't know how to go about it or how exactly works..can anyone explain it a bit better?

Quick question about a gap in coverage.

    Posted: 18 Sep 2021 08:32 AM PDT

Hi, first time poster here. I will be going to graduate school in a foreign this upcoming semester. I am looking at canceling my auto policy in the states to avoid paying a premium every month. This would leave me with an approximate 2 year gap with coverage. Would this make it very difficult to get insurance when I come back to the U.S?

    Thank You

Edit 1: I'm in New Jersey.

21yo with BSBA. How do I get an Underwriting Assistant position?

    Posted: 18 Sep 2021 05:14 PM PDT

I have no work experience. My first three semesters were in a traditional college, and were abysmal. I completed it online for the next three semesters.

I want to have a career in insurance, and Underwriting Assistant seems like the best position I could possibly get in my situation. Is it realistic? If so, how do I go about it?

To file a car insurance claim or not? (minor collision damage & a medical bill involved)

    Posted: 18 Sep 2021 05:08 PM PDT

Was in an at-fault accident. The other party's car faced damage that costs less than its total value, and I could pay for the costs to them out of pocket. However, one of the people in the car had a bruised lung and went to the hospital. They will get the bill tomorrow, so we'll see what the expenses are then.

We are both young and broke, so we were just trying to keep things easy in the long run and get it over with by not filing a claim. Other party suggested the idea because he didn't want the insurance to consider his car totaled and have to try to buy another car ASAP with the amount it's valued at, and he was considerate and said he didn't want me to have to deal with my premium going up.

But now, having that medical bill on the table, I'm at a crossroads about where to go from here. As I said, we don't know the amount yet, can update Monday when I do, but I know that med payments take a long time to pay off. I don't know how the amount varies for different types of injuries, so I don't know how high of an amount to expect to see.

Essentially, my questions are: 1) would the car repair costs ($750) and medical costs come out to less than what I'd be paying with an increased premium from here on out? My policy is through Allstate, which I have read has huge increases after claims like this.

and 2) if we did file a claim, would they still consider the other car repairable? The other party said it's valued at $3000. The damage is a bent frame and wheel well. He has said a shop will be able to repair it, but would this still be possible to go through with after the insurance company looks at it?

I know a lot of this stuff is on a case by case basis, but if anyone with more knowledge can tell me anything, it would be appreciated.

edit again: confused collision with property liability

Esurance claims specialist difficult to work with, won’t accept Dropbox file

    Posted: 18 Sep 2021 04:42 PM PDT

I got into a bad pile up accident a couple weeks ago. I have been an absolute mess but I finally got it together enough to put all of the photos and documents together in a Google Drive folder to send to the claims associate who is handling the car in front of me's bodily injury claim on my policy.

She said that her company won't allow Google Drive links, but the files are too large to just send over email or gmail will just automatically make it a drive link. OK, fine. So, I spend an hour converting the files (they were HEIC and .mov so I had to make them jpg and mp4 to be readable on non Mac) and put them in a Dropbox instead. The Dropbox link works, I tested it on a guest and incognito window. The claims specialist says "the company will not allow us to retrieve from outside sources". She says to put the files in a PDF, but I think that PDF would also be too large and now I'm just exhausted.

Is this true? I don't understand why a Dropbox file that's accessible isn't acceptable? If anyone has had a similar experience and the Dropbox should be fine I will just ask for a different claims specialist. If this is normal how else do I send large files?

    Car accident

    Posted: 18 Sep 2021 03:31 PM PDT

I was driving straight through a green light, going the speed limit. Suddenly a car facing south turned in front of me going east. He came out of no where suddenly, and our cars collided before I was able to react.

My insurance has said that I am 75% at fault. This comes as a big surprise to me, as I was driving straight, and the other car turned in front of me.

Is there anything I can do to contend this? Is there anything I can do to make sure my rates don't go up?

    Happened in Alberta, Canada.

    Thanks in advance!

California Auto: Found At Fault In Trial Setting?

    Posted: 18 Sep 2021 02:19 PM PDT

BS accident from over 3.5 years ago where a guy ran a red light and hit me. Disputed claim - my insurer found me NOT at fault, but his found him not at fault either. Minor accident - everyone was fine, but he had 7k in bunk chiro treatment. His attorney is fishing for cash and waited a week before the SOL to file the bodily injury claim. He lied during his depo (can't be proven in word v word case) recently and the trial is in 2022. My policy covers 50k for bodily injury.

    Questions:

-I'd be shocked if this ends up at trial, but if it does, and I get screwed by a jury - my rates will increase even with the accident being 3.5 years ago and my insurer not finding me at fault?

-How many word v word disputed claims even end up at trial, less than 5%?

-If it settles as a 50/50 disputed claim - I will not have rates increased, correct?

-I have been wanting to change insurers - if I change this month and say I have no at fault accidents (true) so it should not affect rates with a new insurer? But then if a trial goes against me next year - what happens? Rates go up or they don't even know and it is over 3 years anyway?

    Thanks

Please help! Trapped under my parent's horrible insurance but am eligible for Medicare and need emergency medical care! Please read!!

    Posted: 18 Sep 2021 02:14 PM PDT

(25 in New York for reference)

Got in a health insurance pickle and didn't know where else to go and seek help for my situation. Basically I've been covered under my mom's insurance (federal employee) which has been decent but I'm nearing my last year I could be covered (just turned 25).

The problem is that it doesn't include dental and because of that, I haven't been to a dentist in like 7 years due to not being able to cover out of pocket costs. I know I desperately need to get some extensive work done before delaying it any longer. I've been experiencing a troubling pain from an area in my teeth that I fear is infected and so I desperately need to see a dentist asap.

So for the past 5 months I've been receiving unemployment due to the pandemic and a friend recently gave a the number of an agent for Fidelis Care and after speaking with him, I found out I'm eligible for a basically free/medicaid plan that (drum roll) covers almost all dental!! This would literally save me thousands of dollars if I was able to take care of the root canals/fillings I know I need to have.

The issue is that I can't enroll because I'm already covered by my mom's insurance- I would need a letter stating the date my coverage would end before I can be put on this new plan with Fidelis Care. When I called my current insurance to see how I could be taken off, they said I couldn't do it myself because I'm a dependent on the plan and that only if my mom filled out a form and provided a letter from another insurance plan stating I would be covered immediately when taken off, they would be able to take me off (outside of the December enrollment period).

So basically it's like a life-threatening catch-22. I really want to take advantage of this medicaid plan before my unemployment runs out/I get a job in my field but I need a letter stating when I would be off my current insurance -- and to do this, I need a letter from the new insurance saying they will cover.

Can anyone advise if it's really stupid to see if I can enroll is a super cheap insurance plan just to show my current insurance I'm covered by SOMETHING, get the letter, drop the short term insurance I signed up for to get the letter, and then get on the fidelis care plan that would allow me to take care of my teeth?

Am I just fucked? Do I buy a ticket to Mexico and get shady dental work done out of fear of losing my savings to privatized, out of pocket health care? Do I say fuck it and go into debt to just see a dentist? HELP!

If anyone could please help, I will say a thousand affirmations for you and your family and your future families and so on.

Buying a new car while claim is going on

Are products and services like “goforward.com” legitimate?

    Posted: 18 Sep 2021 09:24 AM PDT

I've been seeing commercials for goforward.com lately and it seems to me to be a gimmick. It's supposed to be $149 a month for this service that does genetic testing and other pretty radical things that are supposed to give you an idea of what to watch out for.

Logic would say that if it were truly $149 a month people would go there, get evaluated and then quit. I would imagine that you need to be a long term "customer" in order to start actually seeing anything that resembles what they advertise.

With that said, is there any other services that I could look into that do something similar. I know it's all likely smoke and mirrors and shiny objects and big words to throw people off but I'm certain the technology exists to do something like this. It's just not going to help enrich the people who are getting rich off of the health care system in America.

Edit to add: I am in The USA, New York State.

    income protection insurance

    Posted: 18 Sep 2021 12:52 PM PDT

Does anyone here an actuary or know how to price credit insurance or other income protection types policies? Like the NAIC shows loss ratios for credit insurance (insurance to protect your credit score if you can't pay back your loans/credit card bc you're disabled/laid off) is well below the average P&C's but wonder how that would change with Affirm and other BNPL companies which technically promote people to take on debt. So with more debt then more risk - has anyone thought about this?

Cologuard not covered thanks to being a "risk pool"

    Posted: 18 Sep 2021 12:42 PM PDT

    USA, Texas

My dad had a Cologuard test done as part of a check up, and has received a letter stating they don't cover that, and it won't be covered because his employer provided healthcare is actually classified as a "risk pool", and therefore is exempt from that type of preventative coverage.Oddly enough, his coworker had it done at the same time and has received no bill.

I've attempted to look up and understand how a risk pool differs from regular health insurance, and I'm failing to actually find an explanation that seems to fit the situation. The name of the company is "TML Health Benefits Pool".

If someone could explain this, or tell me what I'm actually supposed to look up, I'd appreciate it.

Will I get blasted on car insurance if I buy a car now?

    Posted: 18 Sep 2021 10:37 AM PDT

Hi all, I got a ticket for not having insurance a few years ago. I don't have a vehicle right now but when I do get one I'll need sr-22 because of this, until next March. Would it be a horrible idea to get one now or should I wait until my sr22 period is over so I don't have increased rates for the rest of my life? (Insurance quotes with the ticket declared are reasonable to me I'm just worried about it having long term implications)

    Thank you!

Life Insurance question for US citizens living abroad

    Posted: 18 Sep 2021 10:23 AM PDT

Greetings and thank you in advance for the knowledge! My wife and I are US citizens, but we have been living and working in the UK for 3 years now. We want to purchase life insurance policies, but it appears that most of the UK based polices are invalidated if you move outside of the UK, which we are likely to do at some point in the near future when we move back to the US.

Are there any policies that we can purchase now that do not take into account what country you are living in or what country you might be living in?

    Posted: 18 Sep 2021 09:32 AM PDT

I recently moved back in with my mother after spending four years in Toronto, where i stopped driving and eventually had a cancellation on my car insurance because i stopped paying. now apparently i am not allowed to have my own insurance policy because of the couple months of missed payments, and my mother has to put any new vehicle i get under her name, and i have to live with her for a year before i can get my own independent insurance policy. is this absolutely true, or some kind of scheme between her and our insurance guy to trap me into being bound to her? to me it sounds sketchy (we are in a very small town, politics is corrupt)
