Despite all the warnings, I accepted a claims role today. Did I sign my death warrant?

    Posted: 29 Sep 2021 12:34 PM PDT

I know. So many of you told me on my last post how horrible claims is and how it's not what I'd want to do.

All jobs seem to have bad things about them. When I worked sales for ATT, most customers hated us salespeople. Micromanagement and quotas made it stressful.

But at the time, the commission structure was great so it sorta evened out.

I took this because I am at a dead end job. I've worked for the same pay for years.
I have no higher education (some college but that doesn't count).

My job prospects are slim. I don't live in a major metro area with high paying or plentiful jobs.

It's just a medium sized town.
I don't have a large amount of job experience because I tend to stay at my employers.

This gave me a significant raise with opportunity to increase it more with avenues for mobility.

My husband is like "are you sure you want to give your two weeks notice and do this?" It's my $40,000 a year safety net and I have to say, I'm nervous to leave.

What if I do absolutely hate it? Will my life be a living hell?

The pay increase is the juicy carrot dangling in front of me.

I have to ask: does ANYONE like being in claims? Speak now please. lol

Is it a role you get stuck into, and can't laterally move elsewhere? Maybe underwriting or something?

Has anyone ever seen condominium complexes where each building is a Limited Common Element?

    Posted: 30 Sep 2021 04:37 AM PDT

We live in a small condominium complex in Greenwich, CT, USA. There are two physical buildings, each with two units. The two buildings are separated by ~20 feet. The units are townhouse style, with each building having two units -- one on the left, one on the right.

For the sake of this post and so folks can reference something when replying if needed, let's say the buildings and units are labeled as such:

    • Building 1
      • Unit A (or 1A)
      • Unit B (or 1B)
    • Building 2
      • Unit A (or 2A)
      • Unit B (or 2B)

We have an HOA but since the complex is so small we are self-managed. The HOA dues are just for common element charges such as lawn maintenance.

Before buying we always operated under the assumption that in a condominium complex, the buildings are considered common elements. Meaning maintenance costs for any one building is split amongst all the unit owners.

After we bought we learned that the existing owners were having a debate on this.

Some owners feel each building is a Limited Common Element and thusly only the unit owners in a building are financially responsible for the upkeep/maintenance of that building.

    For example, they are saying:

    • 1A and 1B are responsible for the upkeep of Building 1
    • 2A and 2B are responsible for the upkeep of Building 2

They are saying this because each building is a separated. If it matters, each building was also built many decades apart. Meaning the upcoming maintenance charges for one of the buildings will be high since it is a lot older.

I was wondering if others have seen a similar setup? Does it make sense?

The association as a whole is talking to a lawyer and we may hire one for ourselves to protect our own interests but I wanted to get the thoughts of folks here too.

Buying Delta Dental insurance for one month and then stop paying premiums

    Posted: 30 Sep 2021 03:16 AM PDT

I paid for an oral exam out of pocket, and the doctor thinks I need a $1900 crown, in Massachusetts. Question: I found a $70/month Delta Dental plan that has no waiting period and no annual benefit maximum. (https://sqe.deltadentalma.com/PlanDetail.aspx?id=hTj8Er2DkSGFLUrQuTmiymEsD5oSYgr7stxNvViBq00=&cdate=ZB/m8waIwtYN5r4epE9AErnXHFI6AZAS0TZ4KRitZ+o=)

Are there any caveats to signing up, getting the free cleaning, doing the crown ($50 deductible, 50% of the work covered, once per 60 months) and stop paying the premiums the following month? Aside from moral considerations how ethical it is to do that, are there any other catches? Thank you!

    Disoriented Progressive Snapshot App

    Posted: 30 Sep 2021 12:24 AM PDT

I recently noticed a peculiar issue with the app where it seems to get a little confused as to where I am.

For the most part the routes displayed on the maps reflect the path I actually took from point a to b. However recently when checking on my history I saw 2 instances where I supposedly went in the opposite direction down a road and/or turned down a side street before turning around heading back towards my actual route.

I checked these entries in my history because each of them reported 4 instances of hard breaking, which stood out because most of my trips are incident free.

I reached out to progressive to report the issue of inaccurate location tracking resulting in false incidents. They replied explaining how they qualify a hard brake and explained that they understand that hard breaking does happen and they can forgive one incident if asked.

Not exactly helpful since I was emailing to report a bug that produces false incidents not to ask for forgiveness for something I actually did.

This whole incident has me questioning the other instances of hard breaking that I've seen but don't distinctly remember. If there have been similar tracking glitches in the past that didn't display on the map in such an obvious way, it's possible the have been more instances of this that I've just written off in the past.

Has anyone else experienced this and have you had much luck getting it resolved?

Home warranty claim payed out, but having second thoughts on repair.

    Posted: 29 Sep 2021 06:11 PM PDT

I'll start by saying that any insight here is very helpful because I am struggling finding a clear answer anywhere. My wife and I bought our first home early this summer. We love the home, but ran into a problem within 3 months. A serious problem. We started to experience cracks in our drywall and stuck doors, a tale tale sign of foundation issues. But Hey! I received a structural warranty for free from my home inspection company, so I filed a claim.

The warranty company put the burden on me to find a contractor to diagnose the issue. Foundation repair companies in my area typically do the diagnosis part for free, so I actually scheduled 2 visits from two different foundation repair companies. One showed up relatively fast, within a week, and the other took a while to come because they were a bit more booked. All good.

The first guy came in and did his inspection and basically gave me a guarantee that I was experiencing settlement, and that the only way out of it was to install push piers, 11 of them, totaling $31,000. Man, this crushed me. I went ahead and sent that estimate to the warranty company.

Fast forward to the second visit from the second company. This guy understood the nuance of my position way better than the first guy, and also explored a bit more possible causes than the first guy. He hinted at the possibility that I could just simply be experiencing subsidence of the soil in my front yard due to my (VERY large) oak tree withdrawing water from the ground during the heat of the summer. This causes a differential in the ground where the side of the house shared by the tree "shrinks" more than the back of the house. Typical mitigation's to this problem involve solving water drainage issues and chopping down the tree. He gave a final recommendation to build proper drainage and see how that changes things. He left with that. This triggered a google storm where found that this tree thing is insanely popular with homes that have attributes of which I check all of the boxes.

Now my home insurance has a specific line not covering settlement, but if this was something that happened fast, which it kind of did and hasn't gotten any worse since, then maybe I have a claim here. I'm in the process with them, but it is still early.

A few days later my claim with the warranty was accepted and I have a $5,000 check in the mail. This check is made out to me, and the warranty company left it up to me to contract out someone to do repairs. I have no clue what to do. I don't want to accidentally commit fraud by using this money to do a different repair than what I originally sent them. I know with car insurance you can choose not to repair and just keep the money. I mean, I never lied, and what I sent them was from an expert. Is that money mine, or do I need to shred this check? I also disclosed this check to my home insurance company, as I do recognize the importance of honesty here. I have no clue how that interaction would work.

Here is the terms to my warranty:

Sorry if there was too much unrelated context here. My stress and anxiety with this is unbearable.

    Thoughts?

    Allstate help

    Posted: 29 Sep 2021 11:35 PM PDT

    Los Angeles, CA

I was parked in a designated parking spot when I got hit by a car who was hit by a huge cargo truck. Basically, that car bounced off into my parked car. My car was hit on the driver's side. I received a call from the body shop today letting me know they fixed my car, however when they ran an alignment test before releasing it to me, it completely failed due to needing a new axle on the side that was not hit (passenger side). The body shop told me my insurance Allstate, refuses to pay them to fix damages on the right side since that is not the side my car was hit at, therefore it must be unrelated damage. I have a 2019 Corolla and have NEVER been hit on the passenger side at all. I do have a small scratch on that side but it is from a shopping cart that bumped into my car once a long time ago while loading my groceries. However my body shop is clinging on to that scratch saying that's what might have caused the internal damage and to be honest whether it's from a different accident. I am outraged because my car has never had alignment problems before the accident. I am the only person who has ever driven or owned this car which I got brand new from the Toyota dealer. I am unsure on how to go about this situation. Would hiring a lawyer be the next step for me here? Any tips on how to figure out how to go about picking a good lawyer? Thanks in advance! (The car is still being paid btw if that helps)

Got into an car accident, the guy I got into an accident with followed me on insta and direct messaged me

    Posted: 29 Sep 2021 10:02 PM PDT

Basically what the title says so this accident happened 3 weeks ago. What happened was I was waiting to turn left onto a 2 way street and this car was turning left into my street so I was pulling out to turn left to go onto the main road and all of a sudden this car comes out of nowhere and hits my back tire on drivers side so you know no biggie we exchange insurance and take pictures of our id and let our insurance take care of it. Next day the guy follows me on Instagram and direct messages me and is like "hey no worries about the accident I'm just glad we're both okay" and I'm like yea same and I have already called my insurance and told them what happened so they can repair the damages that happened and now it's been a couple of weeks and the guy messaged me again and was like "hey I got a call from my insurance saying that you filed a claim against me" and this point now I'm like dude why are you following me and messaging me on social media like just let our insurance take care of it. I have no idea how to handle this situation because I've never got into an accident and had the other person try to talk through it with me like k don't get the point. Any advice on how I should go about this?

    Backed into Loan car

    Posted: 29 Sep 2021 08:44 PM PDT

Okay so I fucked up. Throwaway to make sure nothing here can be held against me.

My partner's car's got a perforated tyre. I offered for her to use my car until we got it fixed (haven't had the time to, we're both students. She drives a farther distance than myself). So for the last few days I've been driving her car. I am NOT on her insurance.

This afternoon as I was backing out in my parking spot, I hit a pickup truck going behind me. My vehicle wasn't deeply damaged. Scratches on the bumper, but everything else works fine. Their truck got a slight dent about 2 inches wide and scratches on the right rear area close to the bumper. I know I am wrong in this situation. I apologised, and he was rightfully upset.

It wasn't a car he owned. It was a loaned vehicle while his got fixed. It is owned by a repair shop/dealership. It is not listed on his insurance. We exchanged drivers licenses and he took a picture of the insurance the car I was driving is registered under. Got each other's numbers, and since he works in my neighborhood he knows where I live. No police was involved.

I spoke with a few people I know that know about insurance, and they mentioned dealerships have a significant amount of coverage on their vehicles, to the point where they don't often follow through with these things, since the amount of damage present on the car is unlikely to fall above the deductible. I tried to offer the gentleman to pay out of pocket since the last thing I want is for my girlfriend's insurance to go up. I am terribly ashamed by what happened (this is my first and hopefully last accident), but I am wondering what the next steps should be to minimize the damage financially. Anyone have experience with loaned out vehicles?

    Thanks for your time.

    EDIT: I am in Florida

    Insurance Agent Woes

    Posted: 29 Sep 2021 06:14 AM PDT

I have a question but first, let me give you context on the situation. I am located in Tennessee in the US. I have an insurance agent who handles my house and car insurance. Back in April, we changed automobile insurance companies but still maintained the same agent. We got a couple of calls from our car loan company asking for proof of insurance. We contacted our agent and he said he would take care of it. A couple of weeks later he still hadn't sent the proof. We contacted him yet again and he assured us that it was taken care of. Fast forward to yesterday afternoon when I got home from work a wrecker showed up to repo my car. The reason? Failure to carry insurance. My insurance has been paid every month on time and I have sent the information to the car loan company. They still took my car and I am waiting on a call from the loan company to find out how much the fees will be to get my car back. Not only did he fail to report my change in insurance he failed to cancel the insurance through the previous company. So on the computer at that company and at my car loan company it says that we were canceled for failure to pay our premium. Shouldn't our agent be responsible for these fees? I mean, he does collect a commission every month from our premiums.

    Advice on Chubb Associate Program

    Posted: 29 Sep 2021 04:23 PM PDT

I've recently looked into the Chubb Associate Program. Curious to see other people's experience and their thoughts about it. I'm a recent college graduate looking into insurance positions such as claims and workers comp. but not sure what field I'm interested in. I have no work experience in insurance but have basic knowledge of what it entails and thinking if I should apply to this program. I also have student loans and know this is a two year program so wondering if this is paid position or should I be applying to other entry-level positions for financial reasons.

Any advice would be appreciated whether it's about this program or what entry-level positions I should be applying too.

    Allstate drivewise

    Posted: 29 Sep 2021 07:41 PM PDT

I know all car insurance companies basically have some type of monitoring device, but it seems like Allstate is the only one where they won't raise your rates at all even if you drive like an ass..

my question is if I chose to enroll in drivewise would it come back to haunt me, or be used against me? eg. car accident? can the other party use it against me? Can the insurance company deny a claim because they see me as risky? etc

    Thanks.

primary/secondary drivers on CA auto policies

    Posted: 29 Sep 2021 05:45 PM PDT

I just added a new vehicle to my auto insurance policy, on which I had previously only 1 vehicle. Both cars are owned and registered by me. The other driver on my policy is my roommate. when I made the change, the online portal automatically assigned my roommate as primary driver to my (brand) new car. I chatted with GEICO and they said in CA I don't get to chose who's primary and who's secondary. This is new to me and I know that I used to configure this on prior auto policies of mine (in CA, although I have lived in NY in the past as well). GEICO says that CA insurance code dictates that the highest risk driver gets assigned to the most expensive vehicle. But they cannot point me at the section of the code where it says that. Nor did Google help me in this regard yet. Any comments?

    US health insurance for visitor?

    Posted: 29 Sep 2021 05:32 PM PDT

Not sure if this is the right place to ask. My partner and I are stuck living in different countries and are trying to find a way to get him a visa into nz. One of the options is for me (NZ) to move to him (USA, KY) for a few months, as if we have lived together for longer, this will make him eligabe for an nz visa. I am trying to scope out whether this is a possibility or not and one boundary is my access to health insurance. I have type 1 diabetes and rely on insulin which is famously expensive. Can anyone offer any insight as to whether I would be eligible for US health insurance to help cover these costs. I'm not sure if I would be on a work visa (maybe H2B) or a visitors visa (B1/b2) at this point. I haven't been able to find any insurance in NZ which can be claimed for in America.

    Help with negotiating subrogation costs

    Posted: 29 Sep 2021 05:22 PM PDT

    Hi,

I received a subrogation letter, seeking $5500 from me in damages from a car accident. I posted something similar a couple days ago, but long story short: 3 months ago, I had a permit and was uninsured, driving to work. I was driving straight and merging into the left lane (EDIT: center left-turn lane), when a car and I collided (the car was already behind me as I moved into the lane). The other party's car insurance is holding me responsible for the incident for not yielding to traffic.

EDIT: I would argue that this is not 100% my responsibility, as I waited until the opening to merge in the left lane. The car was already behind me, meaning they merged before the opening and over a solid yellow line.

I understand I made a mistake in driving uninsured and not being more careful with my driving. The car insurance's subrogation department, Afni, has contacted me to collect $5500 in payment. I am not in a financial position to pay that amount of money and am trying to negotiate.

Afni said I can make a one-time payment of $4400 and have this be fully settled (they would be giving me a 20% discount by paying in full), or set up a 9-month payment plan with one upfront payment, in which I would eventually be paying the full $5500 amount. When I asked if this cost could be negotiated/decreased any further, Afni said no.

Is there any way to negotiate a subrogation cost? What is the best way to move forward?

Note: I live in California, and am fully insured/licensed now.

    Is this a total loss?

    Posted: 29 Sep 2021 02:52 PM PDT

I rear ended someone yesterday (oops), and the insurance company said they need to inspect it, but won't be able to until early next week. I'm wondering if I should start shopping for a car or if this is going to be repairable. It's a 2013 Subaru Legacy Premium trim. 56,000 miles. Normal wear and tear, but no major mechanical or cosmetic issues before the accident. I initially assumed it was repairable, but a few friends more familiar with cars told me that oil and transmission/power steering fluid leaks at the scene probably mean it will be totaled. Looking for opinions from more knowledgeable folks!

The work on my car to repair it is done, but the insurance company has not issued a check yet. The other driver claimed liability and such. Am I not allowed to pick up my car from my mechanic until the check is issued? On the other hand, can I ask the other party to pay for the full cost and have his insurance reimburse him? Surcharged after paying all the premium

    Posted: 29 Sep 2021 12:48 PM PDT

    Hello Redditors,

Thanks for reading and any insight is appreciated.

I had an insurance with company A till August of this year. I had already cleared my due amount in May. Then I transfer my policy to company B and went on.

Suddenly , yesterday I got a letter from collection agency saying I owe money to Company A. Today I called them and asked them what's going on. They said on month of June they surcharged my account for a minor accident I had 3 years ago. My online account never updated and never showed balance. Also, I didn't receive any mail.(may be missed)

Is there any option for me to pursue or is it better to pay them and keep quiet? The money I was surcharged is more than $300. My whole mood is messed up.

NFIP Risk Rating 2.0: Equity in Action

    Posted: 29 Sep 2021 11:36 AM PDT

I have been doing some reading, and I find myself utterly confused about the upcoming new NFIP risk rating methodology.

How are rates going to be calculated under the new program? I am in a special flood hazard area, and I pay about $1700 a year for flood insurance ($160,000 of coverage). My policy is up on 12/1, and I just found out about the new system when I started shopping for rates. No one can give me any idea on coverage until October 1st, when the new guidelines are in place.

    Any info would be great...thanks!

Need help with car insurance and foreign drivers licence

    Posted: 29 Sep 2021 11:24 AM PDT

We moved to DC this summer (from Europe), just bought a car and paid for car insurance. We had the unpleasant surprise of receiving an email which states that following an update of our drivers licence issue dates (the US ones), there is an increase in our premium (+50% of the initial price). The thing is, this company doesn't want to acknowledge our experience driving abroad (10 years driving manual cars) and applies the "new drivers rates" in our case. Is this even legal? Do you know of a company which wouldn't charge us extra and would accept our experience ?
