California - I was in car accident and am underinsured What can I do?

    Posted: 16 Sep 2021 07:34 PM PDT

I (24f) was in a car accident yesterday and it was totally my fault. I'm located in the Central Valley, California. My car is likely totaled and I believe the other is totaled too. I have full coverage, but the property damage was set to a low $10k and 15/30 for liability. We had just got the car 3 weeks ago and i was having trouble adjusting the limits so just purchased the insurance on my phone with the preset amount, so we could pick up the car, but ended up forgetting to adjust the limits once I got access to my computer. We typically have it set higher but that's too late now. I know for a fact the damage to the other car was more than 10k. There were 2 passengers in the car and only one hurt their leg. As for me, I am just covered in bruises and bystanders said I was seizing when they came to the car. But I don't recall much about the accident or how it happened, police and paramedics think it was a seizure based on the bystander's report.

The car is registered and insured under both me and my fiancé.

Is there a chance he will face any consequences for being an owner?

We own one house together and I have 2 rental properties one of which is fully paid off. I have about 20k in student loans. I make $65k a year and he makes 80k a year. I have about 20k in my retirement account. I am so stressed and think I will likely be sued. But I don't know how anything works like if I have to qualify for a payment plan because i would be open to paying for whatever the insurance doesn't cover. I just worry that since my credit is not the best at the moment I will not qualify for a payment plan if that's even a thing?

My biggest fear right now is losing one of the properties. I've never been in a car accident so I don't what to expect or what to do.

Do attorneys get a cut of the underinsured part of a motorist claim after a accident?

    Posted: 17 Sep 2021 04:58 AM PDT

I understand that they get up to 33 percent of the settlement. But when the insurance has to pay the underinsured check. Does it all go to the injured person?

This case would be for Minnesota

Flooded my apartment, would my renters insurance cover this?

    Posted: 16 Sep 2021 06:53 PM PDT

So I had a mini washing machine in my apartment, I didn't read my lease where it says they weren't allowed (yes I know I am SO stupid). The drain hose for the washer fell out of the sink and I wasn't around for a bit and it flooded my kitchen. Apparently it went through my floor into the person below me and their ceiling is now full of water. I have renters insurance, does this fall under that?

Editing to add I am in the USA, NH

CAREER ADVICE: Trying to start a career in underwriting. Difficult to breakthrough into field, should I start with claims?

    Posted: 16 Sep 2021 12:39 PM PDT

Hello all, I am a recent graduate with a degree in economics. Have been applying/interviewing for underwriting positions but haven't been having much success. The graduate training programs are selective as I fail to meet qualifications (GPA, Previous internship, etc.) and other positions require experience. Should I start a career in claims and work my way to underwriting? Is it common? Thanks

    In an accident and uninsured

    Posted: 16 Sep 2021 11:18 PM PDT

Hello everyone, I was in a car accident about a month ago and A lady ran the light going approximately 45 in a 30 and both of the vehicles were damaged but my car looks totaled. I was using the car for an errand since my mother is sick so I was going to do a grocery run. I have a drivers license but lady who hit my vehicle has a lawyer and my passenger was injured pretty bag from the airbag so he got a lawyer as well. The problem is that on the policy I thought I was included but in reality the policy had my name as Excluded driver now the insurance doesn't want anything to do with the car or fix any of the damages. I am 18 years old and the lady who hit my car wants to go to court which I'm totally fine with. I just want the car to be repaired since its sitting at a Auto Body racking up storage fees. Is they're any way the insurance can pay or am I screwed. I live in Los Angeles, California

    Teen driver

    Posted: 16 Sep 2021 02:32 PM PDT

First time teen parent sorry if the question is dumb Scenario 16 yo son lives with his mom in a different city Gave him my older truck after he got his license and he drives it daily. Mom put him on her insurance but did not add the car. My insurance says she needs to add the car to her policy she says she doesn't need to (and would cost more) I just want him to be properly covered and will pay the difference in cost but she is still hesitant. what is the correct way? I didn't really find a definite answer in my Google search. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. We both live in Oregon if that matters

At Fault car Accident followed by not at fault

    Posted: 16 Sep 2021 10:44 PM PDT

    Hi,

I hit someone's car and left a minor dent + paint. I was trying to keep it out of insurance but someone else shortly after side swiped like the entire side and ran. To the point the damage I did is almost negligible. Now its like replace half the panels and basically they are trying to pin it on me. It would be impossible to fix the damage I did do with out fixing the whole thing. I have plenty of pictures showing the damage I did, so im not concerned about being held liable for that damage. Am I basically going to be forced to file a claim to deal with this? do I have options? Am I still liable for the damage that I did do? (Damage before was maybe 1k, now it is probably going to total the car)

Should I get COBRA or gap insurance?

    Posted: 16 Sep 2021 09:56 PM PDT

I'm (27F, USA) changing jobs and need help understanding my options for insurance.

My new jobs health insurance kicks in around 25 days after my current insurance expires.

Under COBRA I'd be paying a little over $900 for coverage and I really don't want to pay that. I read that if you elect to use COBRA and cancel within 45 days (before the first payment and without making any claims) you don't have to pay your premium. Is that true?

My other option is gap insurance for a month, but if I could get my current insurance for free as long as I don't have any claims I'd rather do that and not risk gap insurance not covering a claim.

Any advice is helpful. I don't have family to ask questions or guide me.

Insurance claim was improperly submitted and now I owe considerably more money

    Posted: 16 Sep 2021 05:26 PM PDT

Sorry if this isn't the proper outlet for this question but I would greatly appreciate some insight. I went to the dentist a few weeks ago, gave them my insurance information, and after my appointment paid the bill for services provided. Two weeks later I returned to the dentist to pick-up the nightguard that I had been fit for at the previous appointment. During that appointment, the clerical staff said they were having some difficulty processing my insurance, which was strange because I had paid for everything at the previous visit (nightguard included). Fast forward to today and I receive a bill for 400 dollars and a voicemail expressing that my insurance claim had been improperly filed and I now need to pay the remaining balance of my account. I'm completely blindsided by the amount and wouldn't have purchased certain services/products had I known they wouldn't be covered by my insurance (I was assured throughout the visit that they were given my specific insurance plan). What is my course of action here? Am I responsible for this new total? Thank you in advance!

    Parked vehicle bumper damage

    Posted: 16 Sep 2021 08:52 PM PDT

My car was hit by cousin of neighbor while he was visiting due to a death in his family. He told me that he will cover it and I can get estimate and share with him. I got estimate from couple of auto body shops. But he is gone missing and not replying to texts and also his phone is switched off. I do have his car plate number.

This is my 1st car and 1st fender bender. What will be the best course of action from here

Thanks for your advise in advance.

Edit: I am in NJ, Geico insurance.

Appealing time billed from a doctor's visit. What is best course of action?

    Posted: 16 Sep 2021 08:08 PM PDT

    Hi guys,

I got a bill from my doctor visit for over $1k for 5 minutes visit. They submitted bill to my insurance saying the visit was for 45mins+ . They put me in the room, waiting probably for 40mins. Isn't this a scam? Any idea the best course action is? Appeal to the insurance or to the doctor?

    Thanks

Hi everyone! My car got totaled, so I called my insurance, they offered me a NNO and I accepted it. Do I need to return my license plate to the DMV? Since I heard that license plates are property of the state. ( I live in FL)

Is it illegal to list the primary driver of a car as the secondary driver of a car to reduce rates?

    Posted: 16 Sep 2021 06:34 PM PDT

I was wondering if listing the actual driver of the car as the secondary driver of the car and in place, putting someone older as the primary driver to potentially reduce rates is illegal? I live in the twin cities in MN.

    Thanks in advance!

Dental "estimate" $280 - actual $2115 for cleaning!

    Posted: 16 Sep 2021 04:38 PM PDT

Went to a new dentist for teeth cleaning.
    Visit 1 - Estimate 0, actual $850 (xrays)
    Visit 2 - Estimate $280, actual $1265 (cleaning)

Apparently, the claim processed as "out-of-network". I asked specifically about that giving out my Member ID card and was told that the dentist is in network. The estimate also supported that. A month later, I get processed claim with something entirely else.

Is this even legal? Is teeth cleaning really going to cost me over $2k because dentist played bait and switch on me?
Can I fight this? This is in AZ

EDIT: Insurance verified that the dentist office is in network, but apparently the "provider" (dentist) is not. I have a written estimate that lists that particular dentist though with the estimates above. Will call the dentist office and see if they can change the claim to another dentist that is in-network. Pretty scammy experience! Thank you for the comments!

Progressive Claims Adjuster Trainee interview tips?

    Posted: 16 Sep 2021 03:50 PM PDT

Hi, so I had an interview with Progressive a long time ago and completely botched the interview. I was nervous, I didn't really understand the STAR method, I stuttered on every single question that was asked, on both chances at recording lol.

Does anyone have any tips for me so that this go-round goes a little smoother. I've been doing research on the STAR method and it seems a little more clear to me, I'm just still not 100% sure I understand it.

I know a big part of my issue was anxiety. I'm sure this time won't be nearly as bad as before because I've already done it once (and I'm going in with the mindset that whether or not I get it I'll be fine since I already have a job).

Anyway, and tips or tricks or links are much appreciated!

How long does an insurance company have to pay on a catastrophic event?

    Posted: 16 Sep 2021 09:15 AM PDT

    Texas, Condo, HOA Insurance Policy

Major damage in February due to broken pipes in winter storms (national disaster). I received one payment from HOA insurance in April based on a terrible and incomplete estimate. I have had to stop the repairs due to lack of funds and I was in a hotel for 6 months, only 3 or 4 covered by my loss of use policy under my personal insurance. I have had to move in with my mom into her 900 sf condo, with my 2 dogs.

I have provided multiple additional invoices and I am getting responses like this from the estimator, my only contact with the insurance company:

"Every time I try to guess how long it might be, I underestimate. Don't want to string you along, so I will just say it won't be today, and may still be another week or more. There are 35 locations included in the claim, and all 35 have to be fully investigated, evaluated, estimated, reviewed, and decided on by the master insurer."

"I don't intend to deceive you, it's just impossible for me to give you accurate expectations under the circumstances. Until I have 100% of your estimates and invoices I can't really do much. Your claim unit will be on the next payment request, which I hope to complete within 1-2 weeks. As soon as I have confirmation of what parts of your claim may be covered under the master policy of the HOA I will let you know. But I will need every cost in order to finalize."

"I'll try to get them to agree to paying something without 100% of costs, but no guarantees. You're not their policy holder."

Do they have to pay by a certain time? They have had the mitigation invoice ($13k) since April and it is "still under review". What are my rights? I know I can hire an attorney, but the demand letter is $500 and if I want to fight, the retainer is $3000. And that might not even produce any results.

Employers health insurance has no providers in area

    Posted: 16 Sep 2021 03:01 PM PDT

I live in Florida and the job is based in New York.

I'm looking to get a new job, and one potential job has sent me their health insurance information. I live in a different state than the employer, and it seems that there are no providers in my area. Would this qualify me for health insurance through the marketplace, at a subsidized rate?

Claims Adjusters of Reddit, how do I break into claims with a good company?

    Posted: 16 Sep 2021 02:38 PM PDT

FYI: this is for outside property claims

So, I've been a licensed producer since May of this year. Its been alright, but the cold calling is killing me slowly. I've found that the customer service aspect is something I'm far more interested in than selling. Also, since I work for an agent, I have no benefits. Claims was and still is my initial interest in the insurance industry, but I can't seem to find a good way to break into it. I have applied to travelers 7 times. Once back in March (rejected after phone interview), and then a few more times until august. In mid august I applied again and made it through the phone interview (which I thought I did well on) and was rejected last week. I spoke with the recruiter and he said that I did great on my phone interview… BUT that they were moving forward with a candidate who's background was better suited for the position (which is still open, and is also a trainee job). I'm guessing it's an internal candidate. Other companies (State Farm, Allstate, liberty mutual) all sent me auto reject emails. Does anyone have advice as to how I can break into claims? Should I go ahead and get licensed on my own to show initiative? Any suggestions on good companies to apply for? Still pretty hung up on the travelers job, and I guess I'll keep applying there. I just don't know how much longer I can stand sales. Thanks in advance! EDIT: South east USA

Shredded my tire today in a construction zone on a jagged pothole -- claimable?

    Posted: 16 Sep 2021 02:14 PM PDT

EDIT - thank you claims bot. I am in Connecticut, USA, and was driving through Danbury specifically.

    -----

Hey. At 4:02 today I moved to avoid an incoming car that was too far over the line and completely destroyed my right front tire on a jagged pothole. I was driving cautiously within the speed limit and have no previous insurance lapses or accidents.

Is it reasonable for me to try and claim this through insurance and have it NOT increase my monthly payment? Alternatively, would I have a case to request that the company or town pay for my repairs?

I took photos of the destroyed tire and the pothole after the fact.

    Thank you car people!

Apt damaged, renter’s ins. refusing to pay. Are they right?

    Posted: 16 Sep 2021 01:42 PM PDT

Hi all, I rent in NYC and my apartment was damaged during the storms 2 weeks ago. I'm on a high floor in a condo building (there's a management company, but individual owners) and cam home to find water damage to floors, walls, some possessions.

The building is investigating the cause, but the update so far is they think it was caused by a drain on a balcony a few floors above mine getting overloaded, resulting in water finding other ways into the building.

I have a renter's insurance policy with Lemonade. I notified them immediately and sent them the email from the building with their assessment so far. I did not use the word "flood," and all I know is water came out of my ceiling.

My biggest expense is having to move to a temporary accommodation for 2 weeks while the building installed fans to dry things out. My policy has coverage for emergency accommodation, and I'd like to get reimbursed. However, Lemonade is now refusing all coverage. Their statement is below. Do I have any hope of fighting this? Or are they right & I'm wrong? Thank you for any advice. ——-

You have a named peril policy with us, which means we cover for the 16 named perils listed in your policy. A peril is a cause of loss, for example fire is a covered peril. I have listed the named perils below. Because your loss was not caused by one of the perils listed below it is not covered under the policy.

    1. Accidental Discharge Or Overflow Of Water Or Steam a. This peril means accidental discharge or overflow of water or steam from within a plumbing, heating, air conditioning or automatic fire protective sprinkler system or from within a household appliance. b. This peril does not include loss: (1) To the system or appliance from which the water or steam escaped; (2) Caused by or resulting from freezing except as provided in Peril Insured Against 14. Freezing; (3) On the "residence premises" caused by accidental discharge or overflow which occurs away from the building where the "residence premises" is located; or (4) Caused by mold, fungus or wet rot unless hidden within the walls or ceilings or beneath the floors or above the ceilings of a structure. c. In this peril, a plumbing system or household appliance does not include a sump, sump pump or related equipment or a roof drain, gutter, downspout or similar fixtures or equipment. d. Section I – Exclusion A.3. Water, Paragraphs a. and c. that apply to surface water and water below the surface of the ground do not apply to loss by water covered under this peril.

    Travel Insurance

    Posted: 16 Sep 2021 01:34 PM PDT

    Hi,

I'm moving to canada (from sco/uk) on an IEC work permit soon, which requires you to have 2 years coverage of travel/IEC (covers medical repatriation) insurance. I'm going to be doing a lot of snowsports whilst I'm there, so need coverage for that for a significant amount of days and/or unlimited days. However adding this directly onto most travel policies almost doubles the price. Does anyone know if I could purchase snowsports insurance separately to my travel/IEC insurance to save money or would it likely affect my other policy? or if this would be policy specific? Thanks.
