Buying with insurance money and immediately selling. Is this wrong? Posted: 12 Sep 2021 06:49 PM PDT My old riding lawn mower got damaged when a tree fell on it. My home insurance covered it as a total loss, directly paying a value equal to the "depreciated" value of the mower. In order to claim reimbursement of this depreciation, I need to purchase a new mower, and insurance will reimburse me up to a much higher amount, with proof of the purchase. I'm assuming this is basic practice and I don't need to explain further (even though it's all brand new to me). Anyways. I don't actually want a new riding mower, because that's not the best tool for my yard, it's just what I owned previously. I'd prefer a nice walk-behind mower, along with a nice string trimmer. The total for those would easily be less than the total available reimbursement payout. But I talked with the insurance rep, and she said multiple items would not be covered, only a single grass cutting tool. So, what if I purchased a single tool around that full amount, and immediately sold it to someone else. Then I used that money to buy what I really need. Is this wrong? Is it legal? Is it "insurance fraud"? I just don't know. I don't see how it would harm any of the 3 parties in question (insurance company, myself, and whoever I sold to). Any opinions, advice, or information welcome, even if you think I'm a terrible person for even considering this. I live in Tennessee, USA. (thanks bot!) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 12 Sep 2021 05:45 PM PDT I took a covid test at a pop up tent location as I needed proof of negative test for a vacation. I paid for the test out of pocket. I'd like to submit this as a claim for my insurance. The insurance website says that for I claim I need the following:
I emailed the testing facility, and they reponded with a PDF that had some of the information requested (Tax Id, patient name, provider name, place of service). However, their statement does not have a CPT code or a diagnosis code. In their email, they said "Please be informed that we are not a medical provider, we are a testing facility, therefore, we do not have CPT codes." The insurance says they need CPT codes in order to process a claim, and the testing facility won't give one. What should I do? [link] [comments] |
Emergency appendectomy not covered out of network on an ACA plan? Posted: 12 Sep 2021 10:51 PM PDT Posting this for a friend…her son in law who has an Affordable Care Act health insurance plan recently had to be admitted to an out of network hospital while away from home and ended up having an emergency appendectomy. He was originally advised that at least part of the expenses would be covered but that doesn't appear to be the case and he has received a bill for $30K with no coverage from his insurance plan. Besides talking to the insurance company and asking them to review how it was billed in their system, is there any other course of action he can take? [link] [comments] |
Claims Adjusters: Do you enjoy the job? Posted: 12 Sep 2021 09:05 PM PDT Hey everyone. I'm considering applying for a claims adjuster position with Progressive and I'm curious what all of you think of the job. Pros/cons, that sort of thing. Any insight is appreciated! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 12 Sep 2021 07:52 PM PDT So we live in PA where Ida caused a lot of flooding. We moved into our newly bought home the first week of June. When hurricane Henri came through we experienced some water damage to our lower level. Prior to moving here we lived in a home in the city where we NEVER had any issues and NEVER had to file any homeowners claims. So when we had some water with Henri we called, because we weren't sure. We had been looking for new insurance for a couple weeks at that point because our premium seemed really high. So when Farmers said the deductible was $5k, it just kind of solidified our wanting another insurer. Then Ida came. Ida came and caused damage in much of PA. Our power went our and our sump pumps failed. We evacuated because we have a small child and dog who were very scared. Unfortunately, the new policy we secured started the same day Ida hit. We have mold and mildew damage because of the amount of water that got into our home. The new insurers told us about our deductible and told us we would hear from our adjuster within 48 hrs. It took a week for them to get back to us. When they did, they requested our phone records. They also want proof the previous hurricane damage had been cleaned, a water removal appraisal, and whatever video or photo evidence we can. My question is, can they legally ask for phone records? And should we provide them? This is so new to us since we never had to make a claim at our old house in the 7 years we were there. Any advice would help. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 13 Sep 2021 03:05 AM PDT We had flooding (heavy rain - not sewer) in our finished basement, and while it was not deep water, it was enough to destroy the flooring, baseboards, etc. We know these are going to be fixed and replaced. In terms of the furniture/ household items - how damaged do these items need to be to claim them? For example, a wood cabinet that sat in an inch of water for a couple of hours - I took photos of the water touching the legs, but now a couple days later it doesn't appear to be 'visibly' damaged. I don't know if it's going to mildew/mold down the road. Same for some bags/luggage/shoes/etc - they were soaked, but now dry... They're not exactly easy to clean...Are these considered damaged enough for the insurance claim? We're not trying to get extra anything, but we want to be sure we get what we're entitled to. Thanks for your help. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 12 Sep 2021 08:24 AM PDT A month ago I paid my dealer $600 to have a water specialist fix a rear cargo hatch roof leak on my 2014 Jeep grand Cherokee. They patched a few different spots supposedly. I'm a travel nurse and left for a month to work, only to return home to humid Boston to find my rear roof liner soaked with water and smelling like mold. This car has been sitting for 1 month at near 100% humidity which can't be great for the electronics. The water leak is only in the rear roof cloth liner but now I'm worried there are mold spores everywhere. Initial call to Insurance has them thinking it's going to be a total loss. I absolutely love my car and would be crushed if I get a measly $10k check for a fully loaded $60k car I just paid off. Should I leverage the shitty repair job the dealer did to maybe get a better trade in value for the car instead of taking the insurance money? The only problem I see is the "water specialist" was a contractor the dealer used. Would appreciate any insight into how I should handle this situation to make this less tragic. Maybe all that needs to be done is rip out the roof liner and ozone the car to kill any mold but living in a humid environment has me worried for future mold flair ups. Sorry if this is the wrong place to post [link] [comments] |

Allstate Drivewise - Increased Discount for enrolling both drivers? Posted: 12 Sep 2021 09:58 PM PDT I have the app installed on an old phone and just met the minimum of 50 trips for the Allstate Drivewise today. I haven't enrolled the spouse yet (both of us are listed as drivers on the car), does anyone know if the discount will actually increase if the spouse also logs 50 trips? Or can one driver max out the discount? I don't want to do it unless there's a benefit... WA state [link] [comments] |
Posted: 12 Sep 2021 09:12 PM PDT Do you need high 100/300 in no fault insurance states for bodly injury liability? We are thinking of moving to such a state soon and were considering our insurance policy. [link] [comments] |
Insurance agency asks for car's title, but my title was lost in the flood [Ida] Posted: 12 Sep 2021 10:11 AM PDT Hi, I filed a total loss claim on my car after it was submerged by floodwater during hurricane Ida. My insurance company is asking me to mail in my car's title, but my title was in the car itself during the flood, and my insurance company has already towed my car to one of their lots. (I doubt the title would be readable anyhow though due to the water + mud.) If it matters, I know my license plate and VIN number, but not my title number. How do I solve this? Additional insight needed. Help. Posted: 12 Sep 2021 06:33 PM PDT Hey Insurance - Still trying to figure out my best case scenario - u/anatomizethat had an awesome reply here, but just seeking some additional advice after receiving more info from my employer. Here are my two plan options: I am a healthy 30 y/o male with a healthy 30 y/o wife and a 2 month old baby. We may try for another child in 2022. (Knock on wood for current health) Here's my logic - tell me if I'm wrong.I would be saving ~3k on premiums by going with HDHP, and could also save ~2k on taxes if I were to max out my HSA (if I'm doing the math correctly, 7k contribution and over 30% tax bracket). +$5k for Closed_Won = +1 for HDHP+HSA. Where I'm struggling is this: - The EPO only has a $3k family deductible, and I'm not seeing and co-insurance throughout the document (just minor co-pay here and there) that would give me any reason to believe I would sniff the $14k OOP Max. Am I missing something? - Only significant costs I am seeing on the EPO document are ER visit and Imaging. - Maternity Services seems vague in both documents. Any additional help? Thanks. Short Term Disability / FMLA different family members Posted: 12 Sep 2021 02:21 PM PDT Hello, I am in Virginia. My situation is a little atypical I think. I filed for FMLA a week or so ago to care for my teenage son who is in mental health crisis. His Physician is signing the paperwork with recommendation for 4-6 weeks. My job uses The Standard for FMLA, STD & LTD. Unrelated but related: I've suffered for years from major depressive disorder, severe anxiety, bipolar and PTSD. Literally in treatment for more than 15 years. My job is as a senior executive and the last year exacerbated my mental health issues a great deal. Seeing my son like this and being here to help him through this is the most important thing but I'm falling apart. I see a therapist & psychiatric NP. The NP wants me to go out on STD for at least 90 days. I'm not sure how or even if they would work given I'm mid-FMLA process for my son. Any thoughts? [link] [comments] |
Can I hire a friend who is a handyman to do repairs for my storm claim? Posted: 12 Sep 2021 05:09 PM PDT Hurricane Ida in Louisiana and I have three open claims. My house, my dad's apartment on my property, and my business. I don't really have enough time to do repair work myself, and it's nearly impossible to get a contractor lined up right now and they prioritize bigger jobs. My friend is a handyman that does work for our friend group, but he isn't licensed or really incorporated. Just small cash jobs here and there. He's offered to help me with some repairs around my house like replacing some water damaged sheet rock and my fence. Can I pay him as part of my insurance claim? He doesn't really have his own business, but said he can open an LLC if he needs too. I'm worried that my damages will get out of hand before I can get a licensed contractor, but also want to make sure I can afford to pay him if I can as part of my claim. Any advice? Someone is trying to say we damaged their rear bumper when we didn't Posted: 12 Sep 2021 08:18 AM PDT So last night a group of people started to yell at me saying that we damaged their rear bumper when we didn't. We even looked over my front bumper and there is no scratch or dent showing we hit them. We have nothing on our front bumper and I tried telling them that but they were persistent that we messed up their bumper. They took a picture of my driver's license and license plate and I'm afraid they'll try to make a false claim on the insurance. Is there any way I can fight this? I took a couple pictures of the front bumper in case the insurance wants to see it so I hope that helps. Can they still claim anything even if I have pictures showing proof no damage was done? Need advice for car accident/insurance. Posted: 12 Sep 2021 04:59 PM PDT So I recently got into a car accident today. I was not at fault. I was driving through residential going 25MPH down the road when the other car came fast, ignored his stop sign (I had the right away) and crashed my vehicle. He hit me on the right side of both doors dented badly. He was going around 40MPH, he was drunk and high and told me not to call the cops on him. There were witnesses outside their house that saw it all happened and called the cops. The driver at fault left the scene (hit & run) and my car was wrecked and couldn't be turned on or move anymore. I talked with police and told me a detective would get involved. I went to the ER and got IV fluids and a CAT Scan in case of internal bleeding. I did have bruises around my body from the crash. I need your advice on car insurance! The other driver did have car insurance as well as I did. What would you recommend or any advice? Should I seek a lawyer and sue the insurance company? This took place in Texas Thank you! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 12 Sep 2021 04:54 PM PDT So I'm trying to plan out ahead and was wondering if Allstate will process a visa gift card as debit (for the cheaper price) and if I can in theory set this as an autopay payment method to get a further discount. I'm trying to see if I can bring down my premium to 500 or less a month since I paid 527 for my current 6months and signed the policy the day before (switched from unreliable and little known policy that cost about the same.) Chipped wheel while test driving at a dealership Posted: 12 Sep 2021 04:52 PM PDT I slid off a curb and slightly chipped the wheel. Pretty sure it had alluminum wheels (2021 accord touring) but It might be alloy. Anyways, what's gonna happen from here, are they gonna use their insurance or possibly contact mine? Also, are they gonna contact me at all or is it between the insurance company? [link] [comments] |
Need advice: Traffic Ticket in Queens NY Posted: 12 Sep 2021 04:37 PM PDT Hi all, Got pulled over for VTL 1131 (Driving on emergency lane) in Queens NY area, its 2 points on my license and a fine. This is my first moving violation in 6 years. I was trying to merge into standstill traffic, was a bit impatient. I would like to plead guilty and pay just to save time, instead of hiring a lawyer and fight the ticket. If i do plead guilty is it going to increase my GEICO car insurance premiums. I'm on my parents car insurance plan, car is not under my name but I'm listed as a driver. Should i plead guilty or fight the ticket? I know that NYC there is no plea bargain for moving violations. Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Question about short term disability and insurance while pregnant . Posted: 12 Sep 2021 06:37 AM PDT Hello everyone ! I am 8 months pregnant due October 11, 2021. I started my current job on November 9th, 2020 and found out I was pregnant about two weeks after signing up for insurance and short term disability is February . When I talked to my company's hr, she confirmed that the short term disability pays about 60% of my pay which I looked into my policy and that is correct . Only thing is since my year with the company is on November 9th 2021. Hr told me I wouldn't be eligible for Fmla but they would hold my job for me when I return . I was calculating how many hours I have worked being there for 10 months already . It is more then the 1250 hours required for fmla . Am I missing something here ? Also if they do terminate me will I even be able to claim the short term disability benefits ? Lastly , when do I file a claim with short term disability , do I wait until I have the baby ? Thank you in advance so much ! [link] [comments] |
Car insurance safe driver apps work around Posted: 12 Sep 2021 05:16 PM PDT Out of curiosity, is it possible to just install the safe driver apps (that car insurance carriers make you download in order to earn a discount) on an old phone that I dont use, and still get 100% discount? I typically get around 10-20% discount from using the app, but I decided to download the safe driver app on an old phone that I dont use anymore and threw the phone in my drawer lol, also it doesn't have data and isnt connected to wifi all the time. If no one has any info on this then I will be back in a couple of months with some info when I find out! [link] [comments] |
