How important are work relationships in public accounting Posted: 17 Sep 2021 05:09 PM PDT I just finished a virtual tax internship and got told I am not getting a returning offer. HR said that even though I did a good job preparing returns and working hard, people said that they didn't get to know me well enough. It seems like they expected me to take the initiative to schedule meetings with every person, get to know everybody and ask people about their personal life's every week. I did scheduled a couple of meetings but they felt forced and awkward because there was nothing in specific to talk about. Meeting people virtually feels awkward too, specially people you are not working with in the same projects. I have an offer with a different company. I'm an introvert and I am worried that I'm going to have the same problem in the next company. So how important is to be friends and well liked by everybody in public accounting? KPMG Luxembourg fired me for reporting sexual harassment Posted: 17 Sep 2021 12:33 AM PDT I enjoyed the work despite the long hours and the friendships you make along the way; however, I was being pestered by a colleague who started at the same time as me. They sent me disturbing messages via Skype and my work phone and after they refused to stop, I eventually built up the courage to speak to HR. I met with a member of HR and showed him the messages. He told me he would have to make a call and then explained that there was nothing KPMG could do because he argued that for it to be harassment the person had to have a position of power over me and as they were my colleague and has started at the same time it did not count as sexual harassment in Luxembourg. I later found out this wasn't true and a lawyer explained that KPMG did this so they didn't have to formally record my complaint. Looking back on it now I can see that a lot of what they did was to avoid a paper trail such as only talking about it with me over the phone or in person. Despite this I continued to work hard and was excited to be told that I had passed my trial period just before Christmas, all my colleagues and managers have given me positive feedback and I was looking forward to continuing with KPMG. This was why I was utterly blindsided when I was told that KPMG had decided not to validate my trial period. The partner and HR representative had waited until the last possible working hour and day to terminate my trial period and just as I was packing up to go home, I got a call to meet with them. They impatiently told me that whilst I had good feedback, they felt there was a "mindset" problem. My KPMG belongings were taken, and I was escorted from the building. Later I was told by a senior manager that they had refused to validate me due to an "HR issue." Given the skill of how easily they removed me after my complaint, it appears that this is probably a widespread issue and I hope by explaining what happened I can warn others about KPMG Luxembourg. It also highlighted to me how incredibly difficult Luxembourg makes it for anyone reporting harassment. Firstly it is an outright crime to screenshot or save anything from your company so you can't collect evidence, you need to build the case yourself as no government organisation helps and to win a case you need several eyewitnesses, which even if the abuse happened like that, nobody would dare come forward lest they also get fired. Also, even after all that the very most you can claim is a few weeks of missing salary between when you were fired and starting a new job, and if it takes you a while to find a new job they blame you [link] [comments]

Posted: 17 Sep 2021 05:56 PM PDT Hey fellow bean counters, today I got a full time offer from BKD for an associate auditor. I am graduating this December, and actually start an internship with another firm (non BKD) in January. Just wanted to update everyone, because I am absolutely gassed! Looking forward to my future [link] [comments]

Posted: 17 Sep 2021 06:56 AM PDT I recently got caught up in gossip. Mind you I have been in this company almost a decade with zero incidents prior to this. People always tell me stuff but I never say a word because I don't care. IF they don't like someone or something then I just shrug it off. I don't judge people based on what they tell me. Recently two very close coworkers have been going at it back and forth. I am a victim of crossfire. Both are trying to get me to their side. Well. I have loyalties to myself and not to them but it seems that if I don't pick a side their both gonna stop talking to me. The office is turning toxic at this point. .yikes Edit: they have both been fired. [link] [comments]
Posted: 17 Sep 2021 08:01 PM PDT So I'm graduating next year fall with my bachelors in accounting and I have decided I don't want a CPA. My physical health and mental health is going down the drain studying long hours. I miss cooking, going to gym and hanging out with my friends. Had this career fair at university today. Big 4 and other firms like BDO, mnp, grant Thornton almost don't hire if I don't want to pursue CPA. Even some industry jobs like Marsh won't hire if I don't want to pursue CPA. Why isn't there a choice? Will I really regret if I don't pursue cpa? I get the salary and promotion stuff but what if that doesn't really excite me? I value the quality of my life, the people in my life more than career honestly. Sorry for the rant. [link] [comments]
Posted: 17 Sep 2021 08:54 PM PDT Lately, I've been feeling that tasks that I could do in a short time are now taking forever to complete and just feel unmotivated overall. How can I get back on track again? It's not like my job has bad conditions, we're a little understaffed but the workload isn't exceedingly overwhelming. I'd appreciate any tips to get in the right mindset again. [link] [comments]

Is there any actual meaning to debits and credits? Posted: 17 Sep 2021 08:51 PM PDT Not technically, I know what they do, how they work, I mean do they actually MEAN anything or are just another way of making sure the calculations are correct in a trial balance? [link] [comments]

Are these questions appropriate to ask interviewer? Posted: 17 Sep 2021 10:40 PM PDT I have a one-on-one coffee chat coming up with a top 10 firm for a tax internship position. This would be my first interview, minus the fast food jobs I had when I was a teen. Are these questions appropriate to ask the interviewer during our chat ? Advice appreciated as well!

Posted: 17 Sep 2021 07:37 PM PDT I work remote at a medium sized firm. I joined the firm about 2 months ago and have not had much work. Leading up to the deadline I had a little more to do but nothing compared to the rest of the firm. Everyone is completely worn out from the deadline and I feel guilty because I did not do as much as everyone, anyone else fee like this post their first busy season??? I feel like the kid on a sports team who doesn't play at all and just sits on the bench the whole game while everyone works hard lol [link] [comments] |
