Where do you go when no one will insure you? small business

Where do you go when no one will insure you?

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 06:12 PM PDT

I've been in business since 2003, and incorporated since 2009. My business is classified as manufacturing, but it's not heavy industry - just basic electronics assembly work, including some soldering and a tiny bit of machining. That alone has made us untouchable to a lot of insurers.

Insurers also aren't sure how to classify our products. We make electronics for hobbyists, and also LED hula hoops. Once, an insurer just dropped us out of the blue because they suddenly decided that our hobby electronics might get used as avionics (something no one has ever done and never would do, and we certainly never marketed anything that way) and they were forbidden from underwriting anything related to avionics.

Now, the issue is that we lost our coverage right at the start of the pandemic. We were having a bad year already and were on the brink for a while and couldn't cover the premium payment. Things have recovered somewhat and it looks like we'll pull through, but I've been trying for months to get coverage and between the odd business category and gap in coverage no one will offer us coverage at any price. This despite not having a single claim or safety issue in 17 years.

The best I can get is "try us again when you've had insurance for a year." So where do I turn to get shitty overpriced insurance for a year so I can have something? At this point I don't even mind dropping a product or two from our lineup if that's what it takes to get coverage.

How many hours do you give your employees for PTO per 40 hours worked?

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 10:29 AM PDT

We are wanting to implement PTO for our employees, but I'm not sure how many hours to give them as I have only been managing our employees for a year.

I'm just curious to see what the common rate is per 40 hours worked amongst businesses here. Thank you for your help and if there is any other advice about offering PTO I would love to hear it!

How well does a business usually start?

    Posted: 11 Aug 2021 03:06 AM PDT

So I want to open a business on a very small budget of about $5,000CAD in my small oil industry city. However the issue is that almost every need is filled across the city or isn't popular. Everyone in my city wants an arcade or go karts, but I need probably $10,000 for the machines or karts alone, not mentioning electricity or gas assuming the location doesn't provide it and I'm not sponsored by anyone who can supply either. Though I can scrap stuff together well, there will be things I can't cheap out on. So I'll have to be much more careful with my budget.

How well would you say do certain types of businesses fair when starting so I can cairfully plan out how I can start.

Feel Discouraged When a Similar Business Idea Exists.

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 12:37 PM PDT

So I am an organized, diligent people person with $15,000 in savings and have been thinking over the past several months about starting a small online business that might eventually become a small brick and mortar.

The ideas I come up with excite me and tend to exciter the people I tell but then I start doing the ground work. I start looking at costs, looking at similar ideas, and looking at how other places run their business and then I get discouraged. I get discouraged because I see there are other businesses out there that are similar to the one I was thinking about. Not completely but similar in some ways. I feel like everything I think of already exists somewhere and that discourages me from starting.

Is this common? Should I just forge ahead and hope that my organization, advertising, customer service, and pricing is slightly better than a competitors?

There is a lot I risk in starting a business so I am just looking for advice. Thank you so much in advance.

    Seeking advice on restaurant management

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 08:42 PM PDT

Hi all, I'm posting on reddit today hoping to get some advice on successfully running a restaurant business and maybe recommendations on a good restaurant management book. If you have time to read, I would really appreciate it.

So a little back story: my family immigrated to Canada years ago and we purchased an established Vietnamese restaurant and have been working there ever since.

The restaurant was doing well, but it was what behind the scenes that worries me. The former owners were immigrants too and they work very hard to provide for their family. They always said labour and costs in Western countries are very expensive; hence why they refused to hire helps. My parents share that same mindset and followed their footsteps, thus work super hard for their business and only take 1 day off every year (Christmas).

My parents do literally everything at the restaurant by themselves, from prepping to cooking to cleaning. They would have wait tables too had they speak any English. Me and my sister only work as waitresses because my parents want us to focus on our education and refuse to give us extra work.

2020 had put a pause on my college education and as I was spending the year at home, I realized I want to take over so my parents can hopefully retire and take time for themselves. I enjoy cooking and understand the restaurant cuisine as well as the pressure of working in a restaurant, but most of all, I want change the managing style to improve the business.

I guess I'm affected by my parents' mindset where I think I need to be saving money by doing everything by myself; however I've decided that I have to break away from that pattern for the physical and mental heath of myself and those around me.

Our restaurant had hired people to help over the years and that helps a bit (but somehow my parents always end up doing everything bu themselves again). Then 2020 happened and now the business is very unstable. I tried to hire more staff but I have trouble assigning shifts because someday we're running our butt off and sometimes it's really dead; the customers flow was never consistent like before.

So I apologize if my question is not clear but I would like to ask, how many kitchen staffs per shift is ideal for a small restaurant (50 seats) where a dish usually is make from scratch every time and there is quite a bit of prep work to be done?

Thanks again for taking the time to read my post :)

What were the most unexpected costs of starting/running your business?

    Posted: 11 Aug 2021 04:12 AM PDT

I'll go first. I own a small coffee place that I bought as is, so no start-up experience as such. I'd say there are two main things that I didn't account for in my budget.

One is that things break. In the short period of four months, I've had to fix the wiring, fix a couple of cabinets, a shelve, replace the main lock, half a dozen glasses, two display cases, a pitcher, and a security camera. Doesn't sound like much, but the margins are quite thin.

The other thing is the cost of developing new menu items. On average, it takes about $50 per menu item (the cost of wasted ingredients), but could be a lot more if the item requires new equipment (anything from plastic containers to milk frothers to industrial mixers).

Don't get me wrong, I knew these things cost money, I just didn't expect them to cost as much as consistently, to the point where I have to make them a permanent part of my budget.

Departing Employee - What Do You Regret Not Asking the Employee?

    Posted: 11 Aug 2021 03:18 AM PDT

We have an employee that is being transferred out, what should we ask him to deliver before he leaves?

What things do small businesses regret not asking departing employees?

Anything such as tasks that you wanted them to do or specific questions about working with the company?

How to get a "wholefood quality"?

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 03:18 PM PDT

I've launched a small e-commerce business 2 years ago. I am currently selling Kimchi and Korean Meal Kits only on Etsy.

Long story short, I am stuck. Number of customers isn't increasing anymore and I want more cash flow.
Eventually, I want my product to be sold in markets but I don't have much knowledge about it.
As i was doing research on how to get my products on Wholefood Market, I've learned I need to improve the quality of my product.

Anyone have any idea of how to improve quality of my product and what the qualifications are?

I've already done the taste part.
    Thanks.

How do you manage client scheduling and missed payments?

    Posted: 11 Aug 2021 01:51 AM PDT

    Hey guys,

Personal Trainer here with a team of other coaches working for me. I usually manage my client appointments by inserting them on my calendar and reminding them on whatsapp a day before the appointment. I also have to chase some of them for 1-2 weeks for payment (they usually pay right after the appointment).

Is there a service online to do all of this as I get more clients? I don't want my current workflow to bottleneck my growth.

How are you guys managing appointments/payments?

    Slow weeks for retail

    Posted: 11 Aug 2021 01:40 AM PDT

My wife and I opened a Beauty Supply store in November and I have noticed that the 2nd week of any given month always has the smallest sales numbers. Is this typical for retail?

    Hiring for Digital Agency

    Posted: 11 Aug 2021 01:06 AM PDT

Hey! I'm looking to expand my digital agency and start the hiring process for directors and specialists.

I've been a solopreneur for around 6 months and it feels like the right time to start hiring and distribute workload.

I have never hired anyone, or advertised a role prior to this. So wondering the best way to approach this?

Would love to have people on board who share a similar vision and passion.

    quicken alternatives

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 08:48 PM PDT

I recall having a terrible time with quicken losing sync with my personal accounts. its been so long, tbh. but I recall canceling after 2 years for having to resynchronize so much as the data would become invalid. in this time I didn't change passwords.or anything, it seemed to locally corrupt.

outside of quicken, do you recommend any service or apps?

    I would like to,

sync checking account, with clover pos records and also merchant account, if they support it.

its a pain to keep up with the lag of merchant to checking transfers. is there an easier software solution to balance the end of month?

Starting a business without an address?

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 08:22 PM PDT

I am in California and in my 3rd year of college. I live in the dorms. I want to register my business in my county however we only receive mail through a P.O. box. I really wanted to get my business license because I want this up and running by the time I graduate. I've already invested $3000 of my own money (which is a lot because I am a broke college student and I quit my day job to pursue this). I am a service based business and I travel to the clients location. Right now I am the only one involved in the business. I feel like I am at a standstill because I can't go further without my license.

How do you manage your IP for the software startup? (money wise)

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 11:11 PM PDT

    Hey there!

The situation is that I have a SaaS startup (AI writing assistant and language skill improvement app). We are based in the US (C-Corp), have a local and European trademarks, however, our customers and users are located throughout the world. We already see some IP threats and folks trying to mimic our brand, copy-pasting features in countries like Brazil, etc.

So, the question is, how I can take the full control of our IP and legal protection given that we are a startup with a small team, relatively tiny budget, etc. I've found the article where along with the advice like using the PPA filings and working with local attorney in the countries we want to get protected they recommend implementing an IP management system.

Would you do that, and what are your approaches to global brand and IP protection? Any recommendations on how to build the process and save a buck?

Advice from anyone who has purchased an Amazon FBA business

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 07:35 AM PDT

I've purchased multiple companies in the past, but I'm now considering an Amazon brand. Because all sales records are within Amazon is due diligence far more simple? Do I need a formal purchase contract or is a simple contract (maybe even a bill of sale) all that's necessary? What else should I know before I jump into this?

    Business Book Recs?

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 10:22 PM PDT

What books have you read that encouraged/helped you to start a small business?

It's not the most technical question, but I'm definitely curious to know more about you all (and to read some life-changing business literature)!

For those curious, I'm a new-ish business owner who's still trying to figure out what I'm doing, and reading The E-Myth by Michael E Gerber has been helping me to "recalibrate" and get my bearings.

In business, with regards to breaking even, should business owners always add in the cost of getting a customer the minimum amount of profit they want to make for their own pockets, to ensure they're taking into account actually making some money per customer acquired whenever they break even?

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 11:02 AM PDT

I was just reading about breaking even. The max amount you can afford to pay to get a sale. I was wondering if you should put the minimum amount of profit you want to make for your own pocket per sale in the total costs to get a sale, so that when you break even, you're not techinically never breaking even, but ensuring you're making some money?
