Posted: 29 Aug 2021 09:48 AM PDT Background I'm a solo entrepreneur working on building a mobile app, so my days consists mostly of coding. Of course I can't code for 12 or even 8 hours straight without taking a break, but breaks have the opposite effect on me as most people I think. The problem Breaks don't "recharge my batteries". I get completely knocked out of "the zone" instead, and it's very difficult to get back on track mentally, often losing focus, energy and motivation. How do you take breaks? Can anyone relate to this? Anyone who had this problem and fixed it? What did you do? I'm open to damn near anything that could help. I work out in the mornings, maybe I should put that in the middle of the day instead, as an energy boost? [link] [comments] |
How much do you pay your FB Ads person? Posted: 29 Aug 2021 03:54 AM PDT I'd love to hear from everyone here how much they pay whoever runs their FB ads. Hourly? Monthly? Percentage of ad spend? Percentage of sales? [link] [comments] |
How to validate my idea with my target audience before I build my MVP? Posted: 29 Aug 2021 10:08 AM PDT I'm interested in creating an SaaS product aimed at Cloud/IT professionals in small to medium sized startup companies. I have a product idea that would solve a problem at my current job, but I'm still not sure whether other companies would experience the same issues, and whether this problem came about due to bad internal practices. Before I put work into my idea I'd like to validate my idea with my target audience, but I'm really not sure how to reach out to users? Especially without an MVP or anything to show yet! Do I fully lay out my idea and see what they think? Or do I be more open ended, asking them where their current pain points are in their current workflows and pivot to cover those? Do I reach out on LinkedIn? Reddit? How do I not sound spammy when first contacting them? [link] [comments] |
What questions do I ask customers after they indicate interest from Facebook Ads? Posted: 29 Aug 2021 03:50 AM PDT I spent a year building a product with no customer feedback. I personally know three businesses who need this product. Now the product is almost done, and on the frontpage is a form that customers (usually small businesses) can fill to "Request more information". I started running facebook ads targeting small businesses, and I am getting "More Info" requests at a cost of about 30cents per info request. They provide their email and their phone number. I have about 10 such requests per day. I want to now talk to these users to understand what exactly they want, and possibly adapt the product. Is there a structured way to go about this? Is there any official "theory" about the best way to talk to users in an open ended manner to allow you discover how your product may not be right for them, but there is an adjacent product that could be build? I deployed my first project and I am nervous Posted: 29 Aug 2021 04:36 AM PDT I deployed my first project (dailyriddle.org) which is a website that you subscribe in a mailing list and you get a riddle every day. The riddles are supposed to be for kids but an adult could also use it. I feel nervous because I will not have much time to maintain the site in the near future and if there is a problem I will have a hard time fixing it right away. But also my main concern is that in a couple of months I will enter my military service (it's mandatory) which lasts for a year and at least in the start (for a month or more) I will not be able to administrate the site. This will go on for periods of days or weeks during this year. Do you think this is a valid reason for concern or am I just overthinking things? [link] [comments] |
How to do proper market research? Posted: 29 Aug 2021 01:45 PM PDT I am looking to start a car detailing business. Car detailing is different from a car wash. Car washes do not clean the inside of your car, unless you leave a window open of course! On top of that many car washes can damage cars, as the bristles on the brushes are not changed as frequently as they should be. Gravel and other dirt can get stuck inside and damage someone's paint or windshield. On top of this, I live in Douglas County which is one of Americas richest county's. People are driving nice cars and have disposable income. There are a couple detailers here but their websites are garbage, and they charge way too much. I think that theres an opening here to undercut them and still remain profitable. However I want to be sure that this would actually be a viable business, and I'm not sure how to conduct market research more properly - I want to be sure that my supply is filling a demand. Any recommendations on how to do this? [link] [comments] |
Innovative work from home niche marketplace Posted: 29 Aug 2021 08:27 AM PDT Two trend/insight platforms (Trend Hunder and Exploding Topics) published some analysis that got me thinking. Trend Hunter talks about the Work From Home Prosumer: consumers working from home are opting-in for more powerful tech products to enhance their remote experience, be comfortable in one's productivity, maintain motivation and minimze the risk of issues related to connectivity and presentations. These could be anything from: - The Pictar Stay Home Kits (an innovative tripod and photography kit to help you maintain an 'air of professionalism' through optimum lighting) -Powerful port expansions (e.g. the Hyperdrive GEN 2 USB-C Docking Station boasts 18 ports) - The Yo-Yo Desk 90 (converts any desk to a standing desk with 15 adjustable heights) Exploding topics talks about the growth in 'niche marketplaces' e.g. Dwarf Factory is a marketplace for custom keycaps for mechanical keyboards, and Pachama is one for carbon offset projects. Together, these two pieces of analysis got me thinking: why not built a 'niche marketplace' that focuses on satisfying the WFH Prosumer? It covers all the latest and greatest innovative work from home products, which could even be personalized according to your profession or daily tasks you undertake. Remote work is here to stay. Even as offices open we'll be hybrid in our approach... Lots of people will want to create optimum conditions for productivity, efficiency, and wellbeing. A marketplace could help them do just that. Thoughts? [link] [comments] |
Free advice about how to grow/scale your startup Posted: 28 Aug 2021 05:26 PM PDT Hello, my name is Koby. If you email me a question I will answer your question with a YouTube video. Why should you give a shit? I have a cool job as the Head of Growth @ a cool tech startup. I increased signups by 1,000% & scaled a growth team to over 10 people. Before this, I was a YC startup founder. Before that, I worked on a $5 million per month marketing budget. Before that I ran a marketing agency for 4 years. Before that I started & sold a cleaning company (OG shout out to Launch27). I'm an expert in basically every form of digital advertising (Facebook/Google etc), in raising money from VC's, SEO, email marketing, direct sales, hiring & firing, - literally almost anything related to growing a company at this point. I'll repeat it again - I already have a cool job. I am not a consultant. I do not have a book to sell. There isn't a 7 step program at the end of the rainbow. I'm a marketing/growth/startup nerd who likes to spend his weekend making videos to help new entrepreneurs. This is honestly practice for me to get better at creating content. So if this post doesn't belong on r/entrepreneur downvote me and the mods can ban it. But if you're struggling with anything related to growing and scaling your company, and want completely free no strings attached help from someone actively good at it, email me a question and I will answer your question with a YouTube video. Edit: First video up, more to come I promise. <3 [link] [comments] |

Made over 1M than forecasted - scared of taxes! Posted: 28 Aug 2021 04:38 PM PDT Made too much $ than forecasted. Almost 1M. Need advice on what to invest in to offset taxes. Already have retirement plan etc. and maximizing any applicable deductions. Thx in advance. Note, do not mind taxes at all. Just looking for advice and ideas. So far, this thread generated a bunch of things I will look into, and appreciate the sound advice! I'm also scheduling meetings with other CPAs as I feel I may be outgrowing my CPA. Posted: 29 Aug 2021 02:26 PM PDT I'm thinking of taking a year off to pursue a startup. I realize this isn't my only option. But I figure I could get some useful feedback. What were things you wish you did before taking time to work your idea full time? [link] [comments] |
So many ideas... nowhere to go with them Posted: 29 Aug 2021 10:24 AM PDT First, I just joined this sub and I think I'm within he rules. If not, I'll apologize and delete this. (I'm not soliciting anything but advice from other who might've encountered this.) Second, I've been an entrepreneur at heart for 30 years or so, with various successes but none worth bragging about (here/now). My question/discussion today is what to do with.... yet another great idea. I know, great ideas are a dime a dozen. And But with the appearance of this new idea, I can think of three businesses with established and growing markets, with vacuums in their processes..... that could be obvious and appealing to those with the means to make it happen. It's laughable to say... but these ideas are worth MM$ if not BB$. (Yes, I realize how truly foolish that sounds without a prospectus to back it up.) I'm not in a position to write (yet) another business plan. But what do you do with an idea that is marketable for the long term, worth MM$ profit yearly? One is media-related (new concept), one is a specific industrial franchise (current market is perpetually over-run with business in a LT market), and the new one would be a specific twist on a "smart" device. (For a particular market that has a big vacuum in their process.) On one hand, sure I'd love to be "the guy" behind each of these ideas. OTOH, I'm small potatoes. I don't exactly have the means or connections to do the type of R&D and due diligence that would be step one for a reputable development firm. People will say: If it's such a good idea, someone will do it or is already doing it. Otherwise there's probably a reason nobody is doing it. I get that. But sometimes, and I've seen this quite a bit in my industry, the people with the means (VC/development types) do not hang out in my industry. Therefore they don't even see the vacuum in the process in order to evaluate it. (You can't follow a path you don't even know exists.) Conversely, the people who see the potential are on the front lines and do not have the means to create innovation. Do I ignore the entire situation? (my current and historical plan) Do I just drop a dime to those I think might be interested, and hope the vacuum resolves itself? Do I try to reach out with the intention of being involved somehow? Historically every time I try putting together a one-page summary, it turns into much more. I can't go down that rabbit hole right now. But it's enough to drive someone mad, having real, marketable, DO-ABLE, concepts.... with nowhere to go with them. And now I have another one. What would you do? [link] [comments] |
Coming up with web design company name? Posted: 29 Aug 2021 01:59 PM PDT I've hit my wits end at creating a name for my website design and computer hardware selling business. EVERY time I come up with a genius name I half-way don't even wanna bother looking it up as i know it'll be taken. It seems to be especially bad for website design, as there are so damn many of them. I type in a name and it shows me companies in Australia (i'm in USA) as a top page google result. Not sure how to combat this to be honest. [link] [comments] |
Gary Vaynerchuck and the Jab Jab Hook Strategy Posted: 29 Aug 2021 01:43 PM PDT Each industry has useful people who consistently share free, helpful content on LinkedIn/Twitter/Reddit. I think this is a great strategy for building an audience, especially if you're building a product in that space. I'd love to read more about this - Gary's book is a little outdated now, what are other good books (or other content) on how to approach this the right way? [link] [comments] |
Do you like memes about business? Posted: 29 Aug 2021 01:28 PM PDT Hey everyone! I was wondering a few weeks ago if a meme website/account for the entrepreneur niche would work or not. I wanted to ask some opinions on what you guys think about this? Since it's not an easy to monetize thing, I was just planning on getting some initial followers and make funny memes along the way. I already created a Twitter page for this and the website just got deployed, I'm excited what others will think of it. I'm not here to self promote, but if anyone asks, I can provide link in the comments. [link] [comments] |
Local repair store closed and I have the expertise to open my own. Should I do it? Posted: 29 Aug 2021 01:26 PM PDT I used to work for a small repair business that operated in 3 (now two) locations. While working here I've learned absolutely everything there is to know about specifically smartphone repair. I know that inevitably someone else will try to walk in and fill in the void. The business didn't close because it wasn't profitable, mainly the owner wanted too many things and was expending in other categories. That store was on the chopping block. I currently run an e-commerce business that makes me a little bit on the side. I run something that's a lot like "reselling" except it's phone service. I manage the customers lines and payments, and I keep a remaining portion. It just works. Anyway, I was thinking of subsidizing the repair business from any profit I made from my e-commerce site. Opening a small kiosk (coffee stand like building) and doing repairs. I haven't looked into prices or anything on rent and how much something like that might be, but it sounds appealing and relatively cheap. Should I:
Lastly, this is in the state of Montana so what kind of qualifications and paperwork would I need to do for my LLC to legally do this [link] [comments] |
How to scale up second-hand clothing business? Posted: 29 Aug 2021 01:25 PM PDT Hey guys I need your help guys! So me and my partner we have been running a second-hand online thrift shop (mostly branded clothing, modern and vintage brands) for about a year now. We've started the business with only £200 just before the lockdown. Currently we've got over £5k saved up + inventory worth around £15k. At the moment the business makes 2 - £2.5 k a month of profit. I am currently working a part-time weekend job and my partner takes care of business full-time. My question is - how do i scale the business so it becomes my full-time job for me and my partner? We are currently selling on the 3 most popular platforms, got over 900 products listed on each platform. Additionally, weve got a website (not many sales tho, still working on marketing). I would appreciate any advice (i do realise that we have to sell more or faster but what are the ways etc, we've been thinking about doing pop ups etc in the future). [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Aug 2021 01:15 PM PDT Has anyone ever done anything similar? I have car sales experience, very limited F&I experience but I kind of "love" the business. I understand the type of people you sell too, and the risks associated with these types of people HOWEVER I'm looking more so for experiences and trial/error with opening, maintaining and running a successful BHPH car lot. Is this going to be a viable business in the next 10, 20yrs? Do you need to have any sort of licensing outside that of a Dealer license? TYIA! :) [link] [comments] |

Posted: 29 Aug 2021 11:52 AM PDT always thought that you had to be a ceo of a establish company for it to be "legitimate". like say i came up with a name like telecap , which is a company that helps connects business come up with brand name, lets say. that means i open a website with the domain name telecap. i hire programmers to make website presentable and user friendly. then i post it everywhere on social media to get traction and then i get my first few clients and then it snowball from there. mouth of word, reviews, etc and then if it gets big enough scale it and get investment and then hire employees and then expand. that was always the gist of it. but what about a person who just buy and resell things on third party platform like eBAY. i feel like it doesn't have. that umph to it like the aforementioned above.. Do I go back to work to help a friend? Or do I enjoy my retirement? Posted: 28 Aug 2021 08:00 PM PDT So a friend of mine asked me to lunch today. He got approved for a franchise. The franchise is a high end security company with a lot of rules about everything basically, from equipment officers can carry to what vehicles you are allowed to purchase. To ownership training and what contracts we can and can't take. It's a rule nightmare. Don't get me wrong, a better company is needed around here because the current one is trash and can't keep up with demand and they will just throw a uniform on anyone. So here is my dilemma. He wants me to build it. In return I get 5% and basic PMC pay. After it is built to a certain level I will step down and get an addition 15%. Sounds like a good deal. High end private security is my field, but do I go back to work and spend 5 years building this company up? It will be a pain in the ass too. It will have contracts in 4 states which means negotiating with those states to allow my officers to work under one states licensing rules. Thankfully the state it will be in is stricter than the other states when it comes to licensing, and there are going to some contracts where only police, former police and/or military veterans can work it. On the surface it seems like a good company. They are worldwide. The deal seems good but the only company I have ran was my own and I sold it so I could retire. He is a good friend. I don't want to turn him down. I love the work but I love not doing anything also. Anyone got a better idea? How can I do this but not spend years working it? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Aug 2021 11:20 AM PDT *That is supposed to say "Computer/iPhone app" ... whoops. In case anyone is curious about the notification issue..here is what I'm talking about. It goes back at least 4 years and is still not resolved, and it's making it impossible for us. We keep having to text each other "check Slack..." Basically this issue is still happening and I guess with our workflow, it will just not work. Anyway, looking for another solution. Discord is an option, but I don't love it. I'm hoping there is something more streamlined/minimal...like slack...but without these annoyances. Just anything that notifies properly and I can seamlessly jump back and forth between my phone and computer into the same convo. Honestly Facebook messenger works better than anything else, but that's not happening for obvious reasons. Anyone have any good alternatives? Thanks [link] [comments] |

Wanting to start a new business, but I have a good thing going now with family time Posted: 29 Aug 2021 10:26 AM PDT Low 30's married with 2 young kids. I spend about 10-15 hours/week on my current business. It does pretty well, and don't really need to be doing it. I will continue doing it for a while because I enjoy it and I do make a decent amount of money. It's not really a sellable business either, so I'll have to continue working in it. I feel like I've mastered and systemized what I'm doing now as much as I can, and I'm an entrepreneur at heart and ready for the next challenge. I am really wanting to start a new business. I'm a pretty all or nothing guy, so I am worried that that if I start a new business I'll give up all the family time, I currently have. I know if I start a new business I'll be working 24/7 to grow it. Have any entrepreneurs been through this with any advice to share? Should I just be satisfied with where I'm at, or is the new challenge of a business worth the changes. The other problem is I'm sure in 5 years when a new business becomes easy I'll be in the same place again. [link] [comments] |
