Is this just a crazy idea or what? Student Loans

Is this just a crazy idea or what? Student Loans

Is this just a crazy idea or what?

    Posted: 29 Aug 2021 10:08 PM PDT

If I am paying to go to college, shouldn't my tuition include the cost of text books, and any software I might need to use?

Right now I'm taking a math class and I have to pay for a service to do my course work (its not cheap either $99 for half a year) and I'm thinking "Why isn't this cost rolled into my tuition?"

I complained about it, needless to say my complaint fell on deaf ears.

Pay debt vs invest and then pay debt

    Posted: 29 Aug 2021 07:38 AM PDT

I have $118k in private student loan debt (with a ridiculous interest rate.) Forbearance ends this January. I will be required to pay $1300 a month. I have 60K. I am considering using that money to buy a multi-unit rental property that generates income. I believe that once I have acquired some equity I will be able to borrow against the property and refinance my loans. My degree is useless-- please be kind and don't tell me that I shouldn't have taken any loans :)

Taking on a Potential 120-160k loan as an incoming freshman but in California

    Posted: 30 Aug 2021 12:13 AM PDT

So I am going to UC Santa Cruz, and I need some advice on what loan I should get. Technically I am a first gen attending undergrad, so I am very clueless in the matter since I will be taking debt. I calculated that it would be around 30k for my first year (tuition, extra fees, and housing) not including personal expenses. I know about the federal unsubsized loan for 5,500 dollars, and I have the middle class scholarship for...2200 dollars.

Is it better to take a loan each year? My parents suggest I do that instead of taking it all at once. Is it better to take more federal loans or a private loan? Can you guys explain the process too? Sorry my parents don't know about how the student loan process is, and I am trying to figure it out myself through the internet. My parents cannot do the PLUS loan either because they decided to buy a house literally four months before I go to college. They haven't saved much money for me (500 dollars) + they only started for me and my sibling( five years younger) now (they never really thought about me + my sibling's future until I turned 16).

Also is there any money saving strategies like for the future? I can literally eat bread + jam for all meals of the day because I don't care as long as I eat something.

Can I use graduate student loans to pay for undergrad prereq courses?

Are there any post graduation scholarships to pay off student loan debt?

    Posted: 29 Aug 2021 06:24 AM PDT

Are there any programs or entities that offer some sort of scholarship money that pays off student loan debt after the student has graduated?

I know most scholarships work like, you get them before you go to college and they cover the cost of tuition, but is there anything that can be applied specifically to student loan debt?

    In-School Deferment Question

    Posted: 29 Aug 2021 04:06 PM PDT

    Hi everyone,

I know the probable solution to this, I just want to see if this is common or if anyone else has had to do this.

I just graduated with my masters and I'm currently enrolled above half time (my institution's rule is 6 or above is half time) in a graduate certificate program at the same school. My loans used to automatically go into deferment but they haven't yet. Will I have to have my school fax my proof of enrollment so my loans are deferred? They are all federal as well, no private.

    Thanks y'all!

Can I use federal parent PLUS loans for off campus housing?

    Posted: 29 Aug 2021 09:38 AM PDT

Looking at transferring to a school in NYC and living off campus, can I use federal parent PLUS loans towards off campus housing. On campus its $20k a year and off campus would cost $700-1,000 a month, I could also live at home but it would be a two hour commute to and from(This would become difficult if I get an internship during the school year). Also Unrelated but where do the loans go? Do they go to my parents bank or straight to the school?

    STAR LRP

    Posted: 29 Aug 2021 10:54 AM PDT

Did anyone else apply for the STAR LRP this summer? All of my coworkers & I did and we were all super excited. Now that we're just waiting to hear back I'm starting to have second thoughts on if I'd want to accept.

Sites could register as a facility in a county where the drug overdose death rate is higher than the national average. In exchange for 6-years full-time service in your same position at a qualified site, they're offering up to $250k in loan forgiveness. Basically whatever amount of your loans they deem eligible (up to $250k) will have FICA taxes removed and then be deposited straight to your bank account for you to pay off your loans. Each year you'll get a W2 to claim. Since it will qualify as income you're responsible for accounting for taxes.

I'm questioning how much of a tax mess this will put me in and worrying about how much less I'll get than I owe. Like, if I owe $100k ($35k private and $65k federal) I'll actually end up with approx $65k after taxes, I think. Wondering if that is worth six years? I'll still have significant debt.

I feel silly for questioning loan forgiveness. Anything seems better than nothing! But there are a lot of strings attached … Just wondering if anyone else is in a similar boat?

    Edited for clarification.

    EDRP

Has anyone had success with applying for EDRP? Did you have consolidated federal or private loans? Were loans consolidated from multiple schools?

How to graduate with no student loans.

    Posted: 29 Aug 2021 10:42 AM PDT

    1. Apply for FAFSA
    2. Go to a community college(first 2 years)
    3. Live with your parents or get a roommate to save money.
    4. Transfer to a in-state public university( last 2 years)
    5. Pay for your tuition in cash with a job and stay away from private loans and credit cards.

I'm a senior in college and I'm graduating this fall with zero debt.
