Customer charge backs. Should I sue? Posted: 04 Aug 2021 01:48 PM PDT Hi I run a tea and smoothie cafe. We have a website for customers so they can place orders for pick up. I recently had a customer who decided to chargeback over 15 orders ($350 worth) over the span of 2 months. I disputed this and the bank decided in favor of the customer. Since the orders were placed online, there is no fraud protection for the merchant. I have overwhelming evidence that this is a case of "friendly credit card fraud". This has become more rampant since the pandemic as more restaurants setup online ordering. I have video of the customer's husband picking up the drinks, corresponding social media posts of her and her husband enjoying the drinks. We also email and text the customer for confirmation and pickup. My question is, should I proceed with small claims court? What if the customer decides to harass my business afterwards (like with more charge backs from their friends or bad reviews). I have emailed the customer once but with no response. How many of you all take regular vacation? Posted: 04 Aug 2021 06:47 AM PDT I'm running into some friction with my business partner and looking for some context. Short story is that we've been head down working since COVID hit. We're in the architectural millwork industry. What looked like the impending collapse of the business and our industry we managed to grind it out and turn 2020 into our best year yet in terms of volume. Lots of ups and downs but overall we pulled it out and it was a good year. 2021 has also been a big year and the fall is set to be even bigger - we're predicting to almost double up on our 2020 volume again. In particular we have a large restaurant project kicking off currently that will complete around Christmas. I have had a week vacation scheduled for a few months now before we got the big restaurant gig. It's a week of hiking but I do have cell service so will be in touch with the team every day. The timing is quite bad with me being gone as I work on the design side of the business and this project is just starting - we're a small business so there isn't people that can do everything I can do. Short answer is that me being gone may delay parts of the project by a few days or a week max if they can't be resolved without me. My business partner has been voicing his frustration that I'm not canceling or moving the trip. My position is that there's never a good time to go away, this time is slightly worse than others for timing but if I don't do it now and when it's booked, me and my wife won't get a break and a chance to recharge until next year at minimum. I work hard all the time, long hours and etc, and love what I do, but also want to place some value on work life balance with the eye to longevity in the business and industry overall. Which camp do the majority of you fall into? Take the vacation or grind it out? [link] [comments] |
Had to fire an employee today, should/can I give him a letter of recommendation? Posted: 04 Aug 2021 03:38 PM PDT I had to fire an employee today. He was a sales rep who was with me for over 10 years. But the lockdowns and COVID have severely hurt our sales and his commission. About a year and a half ago the employee started drinking heavily, and his work started to suffer. Over the last year his drinking got much worse and he practically stopped workin altogether. He couldn't even bother to forward any customers orders via email to me, and customers would then call the office, pissed of about not getting their order. I stuck with him through a dui, 2 separate stints in rehab, a car crash, a hospital stay, multiple written and verbal warnings, and finally a 90 day suspension. I just brought him back and he couldn't make it 2 weeks before he started drinking and stopped taking care of his customers. I had to let him go, I had no other choice, and I probably should have done it months ago. But, he's a long term employee, and I would say he's a friend. He's a good person with a disease, I tried to help him but i can't afford to do it any longer. I hope he can figure this out and get his life back in order, but it can't be with me. I was thinking about writing him a letter of recommendation sighting that lockdowns and COVID was the reason he was terminated. And I guess I'm just asking for anyone's thoughts and if that's a bad idea… Thanks [link] [comments] |

Posted: 04 Aug 2021 03:37 PM PDT So I'll do my best to explain my situation. I am making this post for possible advice from others who may have dealt with similar fears and problems. I'll do my best to make this sort. Currently employed as a government contractor making about $38hr. The job itself is awesome I love it and have some real fulfillment from doing it. The downsides are it is a very specialized job that is limited in locations around the US. This job is also remote during the week. I travel about 500 miles a week to and from work. During the week I am stuck on a base that does not allow personal electronics of any sort. It is close to deployment if anyone is familiar. You do your job and go back to barracks where you sit in your and do nothing till next shift. After doing this for the last almost 6 years I am ready to be home each night to start a family. During this year I have started to build a business I would like to do full time at some point that would cover my expenses. I have bought equipment and have the business up and running for the most part. I think I might be into it a bit north of $10k. This company is in the car detailing industry. I have already had a few clients and cars that I have done. About $600 worth during one weekend. Currently backed up on family friend's cars due to lack of time on weekends(est amount of $2k worth of work). I know there is the possibility of great returns for this type of company. I have a cousin and friend located in a separate state that started about a year ago. They have taught me a lot and helped me get my company going. They are both about a year in and making around 8-9k a month before taxes. That being said. I have been thinking about taken a job closer to home. I understand I can build my business up during the 2-3days a week that I am off. But I can only get so far. I do have clients contact me during the week that I feel like I miss out on due to my lack of availability only on weekends. It may not be a lot but it will add up. Another big reason for taken a job closer to home is my current relationship. I am getting older and my priorities have changed. I no longer just want to trade all my time in the middle of nowhere for numbers in a bank account. I value spending time more with my partner and family. So here are where my fears are. To take other jobs somewhat taken advantage of my skillset near my home pays a lot less. Some jobs are about $1500+ less each month in pay. The pros are that they are 5 days a week 8hour days. This is a joke to me, I am used to working 12+ hours a day for the last 6 years. With working 8 hours a day I feel I can really capitalize on getting customers during the weekdays after work. Along with the enormous happiness, I would get from being home each night with my partner and family. Bringing in that low of an amount is not good for me. I will be able to decrease my gas expenses by about $300 due to not commuting to work anymore. But I am still sitting at around $2700 in monthly expenses alone. Not including food and entertainment expenses for me. Here's the breakdown Mortgage $1500 Car $600 Car Insurance $150 Cell $130 Utilities(water trash energey) $325 Missalanious (internet, subscriptions pest control etc) $300 With my current job I have slowed down on overtime(to have 3 days weekends) and I am spending about every dollar I am making on these expenses. doesn't include about $1200 a month I spend on food, gas to work, and other entertainment expenses. This is where I am scared about taking a job that pays upwards of $1500 a month less. Because I am already just getting by. Here are my saving graces. Both my parents have moved into the house I bought early this year. Mother for being closer to the rest of the family. Father due to heart attack and loss of job. Both have been in my house 2 months end of August will be 3. Both are looking for jobs. Although I should not completely count on their income I am well aware of it they can both get work and pay at least the mortgage off I would be in a much better position. $750 from each of them is not asking a lot. I bought a 2000sq house with a .25 acre lot. Rent in 1bedroom Apts nearby is about $1200 a month. They have the house to themselves due to me just about living with my girlfriend's house on my 3 day weekends. So here are my questions for anyone who made it this far.
If you made it this far I thank you. I hope I was able to articulate my situation good enough. At the end of the day, I am not looking to make millions or anything. I am simply wanting to just be home each night. I would love to be detailing cars with my business enough to cover my expenses Thank you all for reading, Please feel free to ask any questions or anything I may have left out. [link] [comments] |

What Is The Best Software To Create Invoices. Posted: 04 Aug 2021 11:42 PM PDT Hello fellow small business owners. I am about to launch my online shop, I have everything ready but I got stuck when it comes to invoices. I did some simulations with Word and Excel but they were just too clunky, then I tried some android apps but they didn't have the right format (some didmn't have MAD as a currency and some were too expensive). So please spam me with what you found is best to use to generate invoices. PS: my business is an online shop for homemade tea, hot chocolate, coffee and granola mixes. So usually I will be having just one or two items per invoice. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 Aug 2021 11:01 PM PDT Hi I want to start an webshop for pet food and toys in Europe. Now I am not sure about the name as it is quite hard to find free domains. What do you think about shopcat? Also as the domain? [link] [comments] |
What would you do in this situation? Posted: 04 Aug 2021 05:07 PM PDT So I'm at a point beyond frustrated with the situation I'm in, but I also got myself into it and not sure if I'm beinging taken advantage of, so... For the last 9 years I have run a successful fast food qsr as a 35% partner, the rest being split amongst three partners who are not involved in the operation at all. At that point in life, I was in mid of a fail business, and this opportunity came up through a family member, so I decided to take the plunge and buy my stake into a partner who was willing to sell his stake as he was looking to get out. This partner is no longer part of the group. At that point, I was told by the group that I will be the managing partner, and they will not whatsoever help with operation, but a potential to develop more stores is possible. So knowing that I enter the partnership thinking a few years later, I would have an opportunity to build more stores. I agree on a salary of 35k nine years ago, no benefits, no insurance, other than my profit at the end. I was also told I would NOT have access to the bank account, nor I do P&L.. End of the year they would give me 35% of the profit and one of the partners will remotely do the finance. I was in a desperate financial situation so i agreed to all the terms. They helped me get a loan to buy my stake into the business, which I paid it all off. For the last 9 and half years I've worked everyday 7 days a week clicking in close to 60 or more hrs a week...grew the restaurant in nine years to 30% more than what prev partner was did. Prev partner wasn't paying attention, or so they said it is why they wanted to get him out and bring me in. Long story short, business is super profitable, still working 60 hrs a week. My pay was increased from 35 to 42k a year. I'm still doing the same thing; I haven't developed at a personal nor professionally. All these years the partners were getting mailbox money, well technically, they controlled the finance, so they had access to cash. Anyways, one day when I was depositing a daily deposit, I asked the bank what the balance was, and it was less than what it should be, so I ask the partners for a statement, and they said NO, I don't need it. Ok, so I left it at that...but I got a feeling they're moving the money around. Now that I'm older (40), working so much is not so appealing for 42k a year with no possibility of growth...total income, including profit + salary, comes to 100 to 120k a year, and I pay tax on that...should be more but not sure I never bother asking for auditing. I asked my partners to take a step back on the operation to focus on some health issues I'm dealing with and consider hiring a manager. I offered to look over the management team. The partners quickly ruined my idea and that if I wanted to put a manager, it should come from my salary; I would not be paid for my time. I found that be not very pleasant. I gave them nine and a half years of my life, so I wasn't expecting to hear this. Anyways, I started interviewing potential candidates for management positions, and I was astonished to hear salary requests of 60k a year with benefits, etc... At this point, I realized how underpaid I was, and there is no way I'm going to get anyone for 43k a year without benefit. I went back and asked my partners to bump my pay raise to align with the market; without hesitation, I was told NO. The most disheartening about all this is my staff making more than I do. I have to pay a competitive rate to recruit folks. Kids from school are making 60k a year with a bachelor's degree and aren't working 60 to 70 hrs a week. I feel so stupid that I wasted close to ten years. I don't have any other skill set other than the restaurant. Anyhow, I feel my partners are taking advantage of me, knowing that I haven't done anything in ten years. What is he going to do now so let's not pay him more? Of course, more profit to them if they pay me less, but if it weren't for my hard work, they wouldn't be making this much. In nine and half years, not a single partner has ever stopped by the restaurant to check on the operation nor ever asked if I needed any help. It seems like as longest it's profitable, no one gives a damn. So my question to my fellow Reddit is this - am I being underpaid? Am I being taken advantage of? At this point, I'm seriously thinking about changing careers. Sorry for the typo - writing this up on my phone. The franchise I'm in is Q - I oversee two locations. It's a ice cream shop and with a grill. [link] [comments] |
Received SBA Loan (2020) - Options to refinance?? Posted: 04 Aug 2021 08:23 PM PDT So me and my wife bought a business last year (3 stores). We got $4.9m loan (max practically) and while we are making it (with not very much left over honestly), I would feel so much better if we could extend our term to 15-20 years. Anyone have any advice on how to proceed? My CPA has been zero help. Thanks so much! [link] [comments] |
Have a fast casual restaurant idea — now what? Posted: 04 Aug 2021 08:14 PM PDT I have an idea for a fast casual restaurant that I've flushed out pretty well. I thought of it years ago, spent time developing the concept and even almost partnered with a chef once but he disappeared before we really got into specifics. I've developed the branding, menu (a build-your-own-bowl customization/Chipotle-style concept), and even made some of the food I'd serve to rave reviews. It's a healthy concept based on a specific cuisine. But I'm not sure what to do next. Can I sell this idea? Partner with someone to make it happen (where would I do that)? I'd love to be part of it but don't have the money to fund it. I could contribute a bit but definitely not enough to get it up and running. I'd love to partner with investors or someone that has launched restaurants before to make this a reality. Just curious if there are sites to connect with people looking for concepts, a specific Reddit thread to connect with investors, or anyone else I could talk to to make this idea happen. Any direction is much appreciated. [link] [comments] |
My few antivax employers are driving me crazy Posted: 04 Aug 2021 12:59 PM PDT Small business, eleven employees. All in an office environment. Previously was two offices in two geographic areas housing all. Post shutdown we shut down one office and it's now six working remotely and five in an office setting - their roles make conducting business really inefficient for remote work, so we had to go back to office environment for them. All remote workers are vaxxed. In the five person office, two are not for... reasons, I guess. Don't know, they just don't want to do it. Their roles require travel, which is starting up again, which is leading to quite a bit of tension between my two anti-vaxxers and the others. In a perfect world I'd just say "see ya" to my anti-vaxxers. You do you but I don't have a job for you in an office setting while stick to following your misguided beliefs. In the actual world I live in I can't let them go. Far too difficult to hire replacements who would require a year plus of training to become 75% as effective as these two, and at the scale of my business I can't afford losing that much productivity. I also can't afford the productivity loss to have them work remotely, or to have my rational employees work remotely. Don't expect any advice. Just venting as, after such a shitty past year where we all took a hit, it should be the easiest god damn thing to see happen. And yet it doesn't. Sometimes I wish I was an employee and could just bounce to another job. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 Aug 2021 06:51 PM PDT I need some advice. I own a vacation rental management company and have a client that is currently in Canada. She is older and has absolutely no awareness of anything, hence how she was able to get scammed (the classic caller saying you owe Amazon money). She canceled all her bank cards after realizing but is being rather difficult about getting new ones. My client wants me to go to her mailbox (which is not receiving mail right now) and check everyday for these cards. Once they get there I am supposed to mail them to her in Canada, and THEN she will set up payment with the new cards. #She won't get them sent directly to her because she just doesn't want to get them sent to her Canadian address. At this point we are losing way too much money on her property. We told her we would be pausing our services until she was able to pay us and she gave us a Canadian credit card which I'm not able to process a payment with. She says she won't be back in the states for at least 2 months and she wants me to lease her property long-term until then, which is not in our contract. We would also lose a significant amount of money on that as well. What do I do at this point? I want to drop her as a client but I would REALLY like to be paid, and I don't think I'll see a dime if we drop her before she gets back. [link] [comments] |
Selling My Restaurant Contract (NC) Posted: 04 Aug 2021 02:45 PM PDT I'm in the process of selling My Restaurant to my Friend She has already put down the "Earnest Money" which is 1/6 of the total price we have agreed on She told me. That all we need to do is Sign over the Lease to her and she'll pay the rest of the money and that's it. I'm thinking we need a due diligence paper? Like Buying a house and selling the house "As-Is" Basically selling the Restaurant "As-Is" and all farther date after closing date. It is no longer my responsibility/Taxes/etc Have anyone been through the whole ordeal and how to get a lawyer for this? (Friend is saying that we don't...) I'm trying to minimize anything as much as possible [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 Aug 2021 07:02 AM PDT Hey everyone! I've been feeling pretty down all week because my small business is struggling pretty bad. I feel like I'm doing everything right, but I'm not reaching anyone beyond friends and family. There's only one person who's bought something from my shop that I didn't know personally, and it's because she was a reference from a bud. I would love if someone with a more successful business could coach me in what I'm doing wrong, and help with very low cost options for helping boost my business. I make my own gemstone and resin jewelry and yes, I know it's an over-saturated market but I'm good at it and I want to continue on this route. I'm mostly on instagram and I use square site for my page, because it's free and this is currently (unfortunately) my only source of income. Thank you for your consideration! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 Aug 2021 05:24 PM PDT I've got about $60K in my business savings account that I would like to invest instead of leaving it in savings to earn minimal interest. Would love to know what others do to make their money grow. Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Critique for my first website, I have no idea what I'm doing! Posted: 04 Aug 2021 04:52 PM PDT I made a lil website for my lil biz on wix. I picked a template I liked but I think I changed it too much. Is it ugly now? I have mostly been getting referrals for clients and I'd like to get more, thought a web presence will help me look more professional, but maybe an ugly one will do the opposite? Anyways, I'd appreciate any feedback because I have no idea what I'm doing. Thanks! Alexhurst.com [link] [comments] |

Would a small business selling the contents of an MBA work? Posted: 04 Aug 2021 11:21 AM PDT Hi, As per title, I've actually taken the time to prepare a complete MBA syllabus based on the request of a relative. I'm actually considering monetizing this, but am unsure if it will be well-received or not. Personally, I have completed a Doctorate in Business Administration, which is somewhat similar to an MBA, except for higher standards of research. What are your thoughts? Would you spend money on this? Thanks [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 Aug 2021 02:55 PM PDT Quickbooks deactivated my account, apparently continued to charge me, and I wanted the account back because I used to like quickbooks, froze my payroll, and still took out taxes and I was fined by the IRS for 430 dollars on the corporate side (mind you on money they withheld yet still reported so I have to file a form 941). Better to automate accounting for a small business just to keep track of things. But with the numerous issues that I've encountered from Quickbooks and Quicken, I'm dumping Intuit. What are some Quickbooks alternatives? Ive been looking into Xero and I use gusto for payroll. Does anyone know any other good accounting software to use? [link] [comments] |

E-commerce hosting platforms with no processing fees? Posted: 04 Aug 2021 02:44 PM PDT I'm new to the business world, but it looks like there is none. I know that for example Shopify charges no transaction fees (if using Shopify Payments) but still charges the 2.9% + 30c processing fees. Does anyone know of an e-commerce platform with NO processing fees at all, or ar least really low ones? I'm operatong on a thread-thin margin, most of my products are within $1-5 range. Thank you .
