Canceled homeowners insurance, a couple issues

    Posted: 02 Aug 2021 06:08 PM PDT

I just closed on my house in mid-july (located in Connecticut) and just found out that my homeowners was canceled, the reason was:

1.) Due to condition and maintenance of the roof, it's at the end of the effective life and needs to be replaced. (The roof was installed in 2003)

2.) Also, they said the house is under-insured. They wrote the policy was for less than the value of the house. (About 75k less)

The issue I have is that the insurance company inspected the house back at the end of April, but due to to delays with closing, the policy didn't go in effect until July when we closed. Now that the house is closed on, they decide I need a new roof? The report from my home inspector I hired only stated that "The roof appears to be about halfway through its useful life, assuming proper maintenance and normal wear"

The insurance company is being very vague about the issue, and there is nothing I can see or find that indicates there is any issue with the roof. There are no shingles missing, no discoloration, no water penetration in the attic, etc. Also, they won't update the value of the policy until the roof issue is fixed.

Do I have any options besides replacing the roof? My concern if the policy is canceled, is that when I call other insurances companies I'll have to disclose the policy was canceled due to the roof and I'll be in the same boat.

    COVID vax/Insurance problems

    Posted: 02 Aug 2021 10:42 PM PDT

Recently I went and got my first COVID vaccine, and unfortunately had a bad reaction a day after my shot. I went to my local urgent care for routine tests to see what the issue was (I had a slew of symptoms), but they ended up sending to the ER because they didn't know what was wrong but my heart rate was 150 at rest.

I went to the ER and they again ran a number of basic tests (CT, chest X-ray, etc) and referred me to a cardiologist who informed me it was the vaccine that probably caused my issues because my family medical history. I figured ok fine, I just won't get the second shot and I'll be good (which the doctor told me not to get).

I few days later I get an email from the urgent care and the hospital will bill summary which I thought was weird because my husband has VERY good insurance (or so I thought) and never got one. But both the ER and urgent care informed me my insurance does not cover the routine tests they performed, and now I owe 10k out of pocket which I can't just pay off right away.

The hospital said they won't work with me on billing, and my insurance told me too bad. I don't understand why these basic things aren't covered and why nobody cared to inform me until after. Can someone provide insight on this situation?

Home insurance companies in Florida that will cover a trampoline or allow a trampoline at own risk?

    Posted: 02 Aug 2021 09:51 AM PDT

I live in Florida and might be gifted a trampoline if I can find coverage for it. Progressive tried to cancel my policy today after mere mention of the word "trampoline". I'm just looking for a company that will either cover it or allow a trampoline on the property if I assume full risk. Any leads on a company that would offer this would be appreciated!

GEICO ISSUES (any feedback or help is appreciated)

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 12:46 AM PDT

    (Washington State) US

07/03 my girlfriend was driving to her friends and was randomly shot at and my car was disabled due to the bullet hitting the ecm I filed a claim the next morning and everything seemed to be going well

07/04 due to it being the 4th of July I wasn't able to get a rental till the next day but I spoke to someone from Geico and set up a tow to get my car fixed at a shop. I was recommended a shop by a geico employee that supposedly isn't a "partnered shop" in which my claim adjuster and many other geico representatives say nobody would have told me to do that. Yet everything I've done has been through them.

07/05-08/2 I've been getting the run around since my car has been in the shop from both geico and being ignored by the shop itself. Havent spoke to anyone at the repair facility. my rental coverage of 30 days is up tomorrow and geico is saying they cannot extend it pst the 30 day limit nor can they contact or force the repair facility to pay due to it not being a partner shop.

What I am trying to ask is what should my next move be ? It seems that geico is the problem but they are refusing to compensate or even escalate my situation higher up. And it seems that I will end up paying even more out of pocket.

    Question about Subrogation in CA

    Posted: 02 Aug 2021 11:24 PM PDT

    Asking for a friend.

He was at fault in a car accident, where he drove into a storefront and caused property damage a few months ago. It was not a hit and run as he stayed on the scene, left his contact information and got in contact with the property owner and the police.

The business is not yet operating after the accident and their insurance company is now subrogating my friend's insurance for $80K. His insurance is saying that they will only pay $50K. My friend is now terrified that they'll come after him for the remaining $30K. I'm of the opinion that the insurance companies will work it out and they won't come after him personally.

He is going to seek legal advice, but wondering if there are any opinions here on this.

    Storage unit insurance

    Posted: 02 Aug 2021 11:55 AM PDT

Hi I'm moving out of country temporarily - can anyone recommend standalone storage unit insurance that writes in Massachusetts?

Typically this would be covered under rental or homeowners insurance but I won't need that for at least a year.

The storage location offers something but it seems overpriced similar to when you rent a car.

    Thanks!

Wheels on my car are bigger than recommended. Will this effect my insurance claim?

    Posted: 02 Aug 2021 05:31 PM PDT

The wheels on my car are a little bigger than recommend and I just hit a curb and messed up the control arm, side skirt and wheel well and dislocated the bumper.

Will insurance refuse to pay for this because my wheels are too big? I'm in MD.

About to get a shitton of dental work done.

    Posted: 02 Aug 2021 04:48 PM PDT

    Hi please help me.

I have Cigna DHMO with my employer. I have horrible teeth and am just about to go through a full teeth reconstruction (putting crowns everywhere basically).

I got an invoice which says 45k without insurance, 20k with insurance. This is with my current DHMO plan with Cigna. I literally am a clueless 22 year old, dont know anything about insurance. Should I switch to PPO?? Idk im nervous. I just dont want to pay so much. Like max I'd wanna pay is 15k for it all but 20k is just wack, but I do have rly bad and weak teeth like I need the crowns. Is there any way I can contact my insurance to lower the price I pay out of pocket to the dentist? Or should I switch insurances?? Idk.. its an in-network dentist from a pretty big dental chain. Any advice would help greatly.

    Second Opinion on Appraisal Inspection?

    Posted: 02 Aug 2021 04:33 PM PDT

A tree fell on my car while parked in front of my house in Arizona.

I do have auto comp insurance w/ a 2K deductible. They said if I don't want to pay the deductible to ask the tree company to have the car appraised. Tree company appraiser came, nice guy, could not give me any paperwork at that time. Tree insurance came back today w/ a settlement in the 1k ballpark. It's a mid 00's Kia and the damage is more than the car is worth (via kbb) btw. I took good care of her but because of the accident, she's on her way out:

    • Driver side door doesn't open.
    • Windows don't roll down well
    • Multiple dents on sides of car
    • Taillights are broken
    • Odd locking mechanism sound

Question: Is it worth getting my insurance as a second appraiser to look at it for a possible accurate amount? Or should I have them mark the car as totaled? Would that make my insurance go up?

Or should I take it to an auto shop (covered by my insurance) to see how much they say it would cost and advise the insurance company?

If I do take it to the auto shop, and the quote is higher than the settlement, can I tell them to adjust the price?

Would insurance cover damage infected from stopping a chase?

    Posted: 02 Aug 2021 12:12 PM PDT

Let's say you witness a car hit a pedestrian and have the chance to block in the driver, only resulting in damage to your vehicle.. would insurance cover that? Same question for possibly stopping a high-speed chase? Rate increase? California

High deductible insurance through husbands work. Are there other realistic and better options if we are considered “middle class” ? In NYC

    Posted: 02 Aug 2021 09:39 AM PDT

Hi everyone. I know each situation is different, but my husband and I are currently healthy and I am pregnant and due in Jan. I am on child care leave right now and under my husbands insurance with a really high deductible. We have thought about trying to look for other options but don't know the first thing about finding alternative health insurance or if we would even be able to find one that's necessarily better since he makes a middle class salary . Does anyone know the best place to start looking or if it's feasible to even shop around? Are insurance agents used for something like this? Thanks in advance for any advice

long term care insurance for under 25 in WA?

    Posted: 02 Aug 2021 03:27 PM PDT

I just found out this weekend about the new WA law requiring either I pay a tax or buy long term care insurance to opt out. It seems that I am late to the party though, and many places have stopped selling to anyone under 40. Does anyone know about any providers that will still sell to someone under 25?

Keeping car after total loss, not at-fault

    Posted: 02 Aug 2021 10:47 AM PDT

    I live in Florida.

I have a 19 year old car and I anticipate the repair costs (which are all cosmetic) will exceed the value of the car. The other driver was found at fault.

How can I keep my car if the driver's insurance company declares it a total loss? I prefer to not make the cosmetic repairs but to be paid out for the car.

    Thank you for any help!

Doctor billed after saying I wouldn’t be billed

    Posted: 02 Aug 2021 06:47 AM PDT

I started seeing a new specialist out of state (NY). Consult was $50 with insurance. Billing gave me a cost breakdown of the future procedure. No discussion of any other fees. Then I see a charge in my insurance claims for another consult. I call billing, and she insists I haven't been billed for anything. Pressed further, she admits I have two consult charges to my insurance, but it's billed to my insurance, not me. I inquire as to why they're on there, as I have not had any additional consults, although I have talked to the doctor a few times when he called w my results. She says she has no idea, but that someone else in billing has to handle it. She assures me not to worry, that I will only be billed when I request to talk to the doctor and have a consult. She assures me that getting a call with results isn't something they charge for. No one returns my call, so I follow up. She claims she was wrong, and because I am out of state, when the doctor chooses to call with those results instead of a nurse, they bill the patient for a consult. Billing is a dead end. What are my best options? They don't have an HR, patient advocate, or anything like that. Already switched clinics.

Condo Insurance Endorsement and Coverage Questions

    Posted: 02 Aug 2021 02:10 PM PDT

Hello, I live in a condo that's in a converted old textile mill. Think 1890's building with thick brick walls, wooden plank ceiling, a couple wooden posts going up to said ceiling. State is MA.

The insurer who does our Master Policy is recommending everyone get HO 17 32 -- which I take to be an endorsement that broadens perils from a small list in a normal policy to a broader list, which seems reasonable to do. In doing this research, I also found that there are two endorsements some people recommend: HO 17 31 & HO 17 34.

I called my carrier, Assurant, and to get HO 17 32 and it would be an extra $20 a year.

However, they said they do not offer HO 17 31 or HO 17 34 -- is that a sign that I'm with a company who really doesn't do Condo insurance and may want to shop around?

Are any of these three really worth getting?

As for endorsements today, I have:

    DF00965A-0520, HO0006-0511, HO0490-0511, MA-02-0706, N8213-0806, NOTI1211-0713, NOTI1231-0713, AB1518JPC-0111, AB3471EPC-0912, AB3494EPC-0912, AB3644EPC-1218, AB3645EPC-0713.

Edit: Removed stuff about coverages. I'm really interested to learn if any of the three endorsements are really worth getting.

    Car rental reimbursement after accident?

    Posted: 02 Aug 2021 10:23 AM PDT

I got in an accident and it wasn't my fault with police report and everything.

My car was deemed total loss.

I didnt have car rental on my insurance so I paid out of pocket for 30 days worth $1400 for car rental. It took time to do research and find my next car.

Other insurance only wants to pay out $350 because they limit car rental charges for 10 days.

What can i do about this? Is there a way to get my full $1400 back?

I was with progressive and Geico is paying me

Coworker goes to an eye doctor that bills her medical insurance so she only has to pay a doctor visit copay. Is that something you can ask them up do?

    Posted: 02 Aug 2021 12:09 PM PDT

I need to go to an eye doctor for a glasses exam, contact exam, and to deal with my dry eyes (I think caused by my rosacea). I have the same Blue Cross Blue Shield Oklahoma medical insurance as her. If I go to am eye doctor, could I just ask them to run my medical insurance to see if it will cover the exam ($140 for both).

    Is progressive that bad?

    Posted: 02 Aug 2021 10:55 AM PDT

New car owner and currently have Progressive. I haven't had to to file a claim or call them for anything so I don't have experience dealing with thei customer service. I keep seeing reviews and stories of how bad it is. Especially on Facebook ads. Tons of people comment things like it's a terrible companies and their rate is higher than "other companies" and those companies are better. I skimmed thru the comment section but it seems no one actually mention what those "other companies" are. I don't doubt the claims of bad things about this company are true, bc it looks like every insurance company are bad, according to comments and reviews from google searches.

It's almost time for renewal, is there a good company I can switch to?

    HVAC insurance?

    Posted: 02 Aug 2021 10:44 AM PDT

Ignorant new home owner here. Was curious if there's any type of policy or 3rd party service contract that covers HVAC issues. I've got some serious PTSD issues with replacing these in the past. I live in the South and it runs a lot for about 5 months a year. Would love to know I'm protected so I can stop thinking about this daily.
