Does this revenue model make sense or sound scaleable?

    Posted: 09 Jul 2021 08:24 PM PDT

    Hi there,

I am building a prototype of product at the moment and after discussion and feedback from some potential stakeholders have an early revenue model concept. I am from a non-finance background so this isn't naturally my strong suit but I am eager to learn and so feedback and advice from this community would be awesome.

Essentially, I want to know whether the following revenue model is scaleable:

    • Customer pays mthly subscription to access a limited pool of gift vouchers that are periodically displayed in app. Customer can claim these vouchers and add to a wallet to be used within a specific time period (2 weeks say).

Theoretically, I customer, if lucky, could claim 2 or 3 vouchers and most likely repay their subscription fee for the month.

    What I'm not sure about:

    1. This seems like a pretty old school idea - nothing wrong with that necessarily - but I'd be interested in the major pit falls of such an approach
    2. Not sure what a logical $ to assign to the vouchers, I keep coming back to 50% of total subscription revenue.

I'm not sure what I am missing otherwise - I'd be really interested in any reading/models/methodologies I can apply to this problem!

Thanks so much for any advice or feedback.

    Does Physical Location Matter?

    Posted: 09 Jul 2021 12:26 PM PDT

    Hi there,

I have been in tech for a number of years at this point working as an engineer full time and devoting around 20 hrs week to side projects. I am at a point where I want to take one of these projects seriously and attempt to create a business out of it.

I am based in the midwest, about as far from a tech "hub" as you can get in the US. I hear about startup hubs like San Francisco, Denver, Austin, etc. Can anyone share their experience on the value of moving to one of these locations? What are some of the biggest benefits to moving? What about the biggest detractors?

    Thanks!

How to outsource email support? Recommendations or where to look?

    Posted: 09 Jul 2021 06:54 AM PDT

Since my app is free and gets a considerable amount of downloads, I receive about 100-200 customer support emails every day. All but maybe 10 per day can be replied to using email macros ("Click the login button to log in", "Have you restarted the computer when it told you to do that?", etc.) so on top of the email provider's website I wrote a script to ease this communication a lot.

I do enjoy hearing the customer's opinion in these emails so I always thought it's a good thing to handle these myself.

However, in the past 2 months I got diagnosed with tennis elbow on my left, and an inflamed tendon on my right wrist. Sometimes it's getting better, sometimes it's getting worse so I want to to cut down keyboard usage and outsource replying to the 95% that are the "standard issues".

What I am looking for now is a service that

    - logs into my account every hour

    - uses my pre-defined macros to reply to emails based on indicators given in the support ticket

    - puts the other 5% that require my care in a folder so I can personally get back to them

It's a job so simple that almost a computer could do so no technical knowledge is required (I mention this since some claim being experts etc. that's not needed in my case). Actually the person in charge won't even have to type a lot since it's all macros with automatic personalization.

And I think the total daily time spent is about one hour per day - check emails for 12 times a day, take 5 minutes to work through them per hour. Traffic at night (GMT) is very low.

Maybe one of your startups is in a similar situation, do you use or can you recommend any service that does that for a reasonable price?

I found the average hourly wage in India to be $ 2.41. At 30 days a month that would be a cost of $ 72 per month. Double that for potential peak traffic and infrastructure cost that would be less than $ 150 per month which I would be okay with. Are there services in that price range? Or even websites giving me an overview what to look out for? Obviously I can't just find a random person to do this since that person would have an off-time of 55 minutes on the hour unless they also got similar jobs to take care of already to make a living - so finding a business that does these things en masse would be preferred for both sides I guess.

What is a good place to find a co-founder when not in the US?

    Posted: 09 Jul 2021 06:37 PM PDT

I am located in Canada and when looking on this sub for resources for finding a co-founder and even on google, most center around the US and not other countries.

I am considering finding a co-founder to work with me on a B2B SaaS I have built and have the MVP ready for. I'd really like to focus on the tech and business side of things while leaving the sales and marketing to someone who is better at it than I am. Are there any good places to find co-founders in Canada where I can filter by skills or something where I'm not just getting people who have an idea and want someone to build it.

Code security when developers/team is offshore

    Posted: 09 Jul 2021 12:19 PM PDT

When you hire offshore developers, how can you make sure your code is safe and not copied to create a competitor product or service? Sure we can have NDAs but working with offshore developers, it doesn't have much value.

How have you dealt with this situation? What kind of restrictions can you put in developer laptops or other solutions if any.

Best email examples/templates to encourage user for Annual Subscription?

    Posted: 09 Jul 2021 08:42 AM PDT

    Hi everyone,

28% of my existing users (SaaS product) are subscribed to Yearly plan. I am thinking to run an email campaign for the other users to encourage them to go for Annual Subscription.

If you have seen any best annual subscription email example or know any best source then please share it.

    Thanks!

    Improving our product strategy

    Posted: 09 Jul 2021 12:33 PM PDT

About two years ago, our NLP startup was founded. We started focusing on (B2B) end-users, and recently we pivoted to become even more focused on our tech, licensing our technique to other companies that focus on the end user. This means no more fancy frontends, but building backends, deploying models, and selling APIs only.

We are a team of three: my CEO's main focus is business strategy, market knowledge, and ensuring our cash position. He surprises me weekly with new contacts and potential opportunities. My CTO eats papers for breakfast and trains the best NLP models. I'm responsible for delivering my CTO's models safe and sound to our clients. (Previously in the form of a fancy frontend, currently as an API).

We're very market-focused: we want to know their problems top to bottom, so talking to (potential) customers is everyone's responsibility, and we are really focused on the market's needs. However, this also gives us many different inputs, resulting in a lot of doubt and back-and-forth-going.

Something we seem to lack is "product vision". We're all looking at here and now a lot, and because of this going back-and-forth, we're having a hard time to look ahead further than a month.

As the "product guy" of the company, I feel like I should be the one taking ownership of this product vision. Trying to build a roadmap and somehow sticking to it (or at least nudging it into the right direction in a controlled matter).

Of course I have some vision in my mind, but that shifts regularly, and I'm more impulsive than planning oriented. Therefore I'm looking for resources (preferably books) to help me building and managing our company's product vision. I hope my problem is recognizable and you can point me towards some resources, or share experiences that can shine new light on my problem.

Every train of thought, and every resource is welcome. Feel free to ask more in case I left things unclear. Thanks!

Financial Documents Required for Seed Round?

    Posted: 09 Jul 2021 09:52 AM PDT

If any of you have taken in institutional money from vc firms for a seed a round I have some questions relating to some of the due diligence these investors required...

Did you build out a pro-forma showing both revenues and costs? So far I have build out an excel document with expenses + burn rate for a period of 15 months (enough time to hit milestones and raise series a).

I thought about including in revenue but it seems outlandish considering our objectives for the round.

Would love to hear some thoughts! I've heard some seed investors won't even look at financial documents so thought I would ask. Would be showing user metrics in place.

Not exactly sure how to pick a name

    Posted: 09 Jul 2021 09:29 AM PDT

Hi Community, I have been lurking here for a bit, and wanted some support on a project I am working on. I have a project, it's a really good project, but it has the issue that the name of it, is a really common job title and marketing the company has been a really interesting issue, and I was wondering if anyone could share any tips that they used to avoid this, all while having a unique name?

    Thanks in advance.

    Early Product/Market research - Outsourcing

    Posted: 09 Jul 2021 04:39 AM PDT

    Hey all,

We are a in the midst of our idea validation and market research phase. Due to the vast size of our target market (card and board games industry), we are outsourcing part (or potentially all) of our market research to an applicant more versed in the target market.

We'd like to know some suggestions on what key metrics we should task our outsourcer with researching. So far, we have included in the job description:

    • Similar games and rule variations in existence
    • What retailers our target audience might consider purchasing from - insight into route to market
    • Pricing analysis

We understand that this may seem quite light touch and it's intended to be at this stage.

Any suggestions on key tasks we should be focusing on would be appreciated - Thanks!
