Financial Advisor forgot about me Posted: 07 Jul 2021 04:54 AM PDT I've been using my parents' financial advisor since I moved out and started saving for retirement. I recently learned that the guy hasn't been investing the checks I've sent him for Roth IRA contributions—he's been adding it to the account and letting it sit at cash—for the last three years. When I finally confronted him about it, he said that he isn't licensed to work in my state and connected me to a colleague that is. I had a weird Zoom meeting with the colleague who ended by trying to sell me term life insurance (I have no dependents). He said he would send me some paperwork to sign so that he could transfer my assets over to his investment group (his strategy seems to be solely based on investing in Blackrock). That was six weeks ago. I emailed him and said I never received the papers, and he responded that he forgot to send them, but here they are now. These behaviors seems absolutely inexcusable to me, but this is my first experience with a financial advisor. Is it normal for people to forget to invest, then forget to send you paperwork? How do I find a different financial advisor? I don't have time to manage these funds myself, so I'm hesitant to put them in Vanguard or similar. I just want to put the money away and return in 20 years with some kind of growth that beats having it sit in a bank account. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 07 Jul 2021 06:56 AM PDT Hello, last year I went under surgery on my leg due to an accident, this was right when pandemic started. When I asked the hospital if it was in-network they said yes. I got surgery paid my bills and all good. Fast forward two months ago I get an email for a $2500 bill that is coming from the anesthesia company. I called them and long story short, the hospital and the surgeon were in-network, but the anesthesia wasn't. Nobody told me any of this when I signed the papers or inquired about the services at the hospital. I filed a request for reimbursement to my insurance company saying that I was not aware of this out-of-network service, but they have denied my request. I'm not sure what my next step should be. The letter they sent says I can appeal this decision, but I would like to be more informed if my case is valid, which I think it is, and what other information/proof I should provide. Any help is appreciated. [link] [comments] |
My mother is terrible with money, and I suffer because of it. Posted: 07 Jul 2021 04:29 PM PDT My mom (44F) makes around 60k a year (about 1100 a week), and my dad(44M) makes around 70k a year. My mom pays no bills. All she has to pay for is food and her car payment. My dad pays everything else, even my mom's taxes lol. Despite this, however, she is broke. Not only is she broke, but she is in debt. She has 20,000 dollars in credit card debt. She has about 18,000 dollars left on her car loan. Her credit card debt just keeps growing because of the interest. She never makes payments towards it. To top it off, about 2 years ago she spent around 15,000 dollars buying and renovating a food trailer to start a snow cone business. This trailer has been sitting in her friend's lot for 2 years, never having been used and depreciating in value. I'm a 19-year-old college student struggling to pay for rent, a car payment, car insurance, food, and tuition. When I'm stressing out about money, she is always sympathetic and says she will help, but she literally can't. She spends 100+ dollars a week on DoorDash for herself alone. Not only this, but she gets so stressed out from work so she always spends thousands over summer every year going on vacation with her friends.Any time I tell her she needs to work on her credit card debt or do something with the 15,000 dollar trailer she left to rot, she gets irrationally angry. She says it's not my place to talk to her about finance and to stay out of it. When my dad criticizes her, she gets even angrier at him than she does with me. She calls him cheap and mean and always negative. Nobody can criticize her and it is a serious problem. Here are my two questions: How can I convince my mom to actually listen? She literally refuses to be criticized, no matter who is doing the criticizing. How can my mom get out of this mess? She makes 1000 a week. She spends about 450 a month on her car loan. So this leaves at least like $850+ a week just to spend on food. Yet, she somehow spends ALL the 1000 on food and random crap. I suppose the answer seems obvious (spend less on food) but it's easier said than done with her. How can she actually spend less? Oh, and what should she do about the credit card debt? Thanks in advance. Edit: I'd like to add some clarity. My mother is not crazy. She is not mean. Unless she is the best actor in the world, she genuinely cares for me and genuinely wants to help me. However, her idea of helping me is simply getting into more debt. I just don't want it to be this way. And I plan on paying my parents back for everything they have done for me the moment my student loans are paid off [link] [comments] |
Parent has no retirement savings and no way to work, partially disabled, what options are there? Posted: 07 Jul 2021 12:41 PM PDT My father, 77, has no retirement savings, no house and practically speaking zero assets. He is taking in @$1500 per month in social security, which is his only income. Recently he had a couple of strokes that have impaired his vision and left him feeling weakened and unable to work. Besides his monthly social security check what options does he have, if any, to supplement his income via government aid or other avenues? thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 06 Jul 2021 11:11 AM PDT Especially in this job market, when they ask about salary you should give a number that you think is outrageous. At minimum 20% higher than you think you're worth. After five years at a corporate marketing gig I've been slowly clawing for salary increases and finally got up to $115k. In the new year, for the hell of it I started talking to other companies. After a few months of interviewing for a role I didn't think I was in the running for, I told one company that I wanted $150k to move and be a part of their team. While they spent the rest of rounds of interviews downplaying salary, they gave me an offer for exactly what I asked for. I was so shocked I accepted on the spot. I know it's a personal anecdote, but y'all gotta take advantage of the tight job market. The best time to find a new job is when you have one already, and ask for the moon because you might just get it. [link] [comments] |
Just got flipped to salary and a new title [promotion] with no change in pay? Posted: 07 Jul 2021 02:10 PM PDT Ive worked at a very large company for well over a few years now. Last Friday I found out that I got changed to Salary from a vague message from Payroll. "Please confirm if you work Mon-Fri or Tues-Sat so we can get your salary pay on the proper day. Turns out I got changed from Hourly to Salary on 6/30, two days prior to finding out. At the same time, I was promoted from a Tech to a Program Manager. Program Manager's at my company make around 80% more than my base pay (70k vs 120k.) This change has affected multiple people in our dept. Im counting about 7/35 right now. We have been going through a restructure the past year to get us into our new title roles and we were told that we will in fact be making more money, however [now] that wont be until reviews come at the beginning of Q2 next year. Last year I made 111k with my Overtime. Now Im making 70k flat rate for a PM job role. So with the OT that Ive already made this year, looking at around 85k. Maybe Im just ranting about this because I need to tell someone how mad I am, and everyone else. A few people are already looking for new jobs and are giving them to the end of the month. Is there anything I [we] can do? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 07 Jul 2021 06:20 PM PDT Hi all! Looking for some advice - I'm debating whether or not I should pay off my student loans in their entirety. I'm a 27 F living in a HCOL city and make $118K with up to a 15% bonus every year. More details below.
For additional context, I'm relocating to another HCOL city in January. I'm posting from my phone, so apologies for any formatting issues. Thanks! [link] [comments] |

Is there an easy way to invest some money and not have to manage/think about it much? Posted: 07 Jul 2021 02:06 PM PDT I apologize in advance for the terrible question. Frankly, I have absolutely no interest in investing or starting a business or becoming rich. But I'm also an absolute workaholic and have about 35,000 saved, and a steady job too. I have no credit card/car/university debt, I've maxed out my roth IRA, and right now all the rest of my money is just sitting in a checking account. I'm putting this on a throwaway account bc I know it sounds like a humble brag, but I have no idea what to do with my money. I'm in my mid 20s and I don't think I'm handy enough to buy and flip a house, and I don't really have much interest in spending a lot of time managing investments. Is there something safe that I could invest a couple thousand in? I just feel like it's dangerous to have it all sitting there. [link] [comments] |

Financial Planning and Retirement Posted: 07 Jul 2021 10:26 PM PDT I'm 41, I've never been properly taught about finances and as such, I made plenty of stupid mistakes growing up, including marrying someone who was terrible with money. I have no savings and no retirement. I recently got divorced. I am also finishing up retraining into a job field that is going to potentially double the income (anywhere between 50k to 100k depending on where I get a job.) giving me more money than I have ever made. I have looked to a lot of advice but it is for younger people who have plenty of time to invest and be very well off when they retire or retire early, but not much advice for people who made mistakes or just never had the opportunity to invest or save. I want to be smart when the money does start to come in. I know more money is more temptation. I want to look towards my future retirement and making sure I am no longer scraping by or living paycheck to paycheck. I want to make sure I can take care of myself even when I can no longer work. So I am asking for help, resources I can read, videos to watch, or ways I can invest and save to make sure I am smart with my money and comfortable in retirement. Or even someone I can turn to for further advice. Thank You [link] [comments] |
What happens to a condo mortgage if the building is destroyed Posted: 07 Jul 2021 07:05 AM PDT The tower collapse in Florida got me thinking what is going to happen to all the people who lived through it and their finances. Obviously the building has a master insurance policy and the condo owners should have their own policies with a year or so of hotel stays covered. But the building isn't going to be rebuilt for at least a few years if ever. Can the master insurance policy be cashed out to pay off the mortgage balances of the owners? or will they be stuck with the debt and may have to declare chapter 11 to get rid of it? Im 19 and My father is threatening to kick me out if I don't enter a college by August. Posted: 07 Jul 2021 04:23 PM PDT So basically, I recently just graduated high school at 19 years of age due to me somehow having to retake kindergarten for some reason, weird huh. I ended up applying to a college without the use of FAFSA since my father was unwilling to let me use his tax reports since he believes the government doesn't need to know too much of his information which I find hilariously stupid. This resulted in me not being able to receive any grants from FAFSA and am forced to only take loans and considering how poor this dirtbag family is, I could have at least got enough to attend a university. Anyway, I found out that my loan and the scholarship I received from the university would be not enough to cover me for the full semester and my alterative is probably to attend a community college. My only issue is my father wants me out of the house ASAP regardless if I'm working or not toward a college so he doesn't have to worry about my ass anymore and I can't find any other colleges with lower cost to attend to from using loans and since I can't find any community colleges that offer dorms, I'm stuck in a hard place of what the hell to do before my dad ends up kicking me . I'm willing to get a job ASAP if I can and have been trying so after my graduation. I also have no friends that can help me out or other family as live far away meaning I'm alone in this situation. Please, any advice would be greatly appreciated ♥ [link] [comments] |

Posted: 06 Jul 2021 07:31 AM PDT I purchased an after market bumper for my truck that was about $2k. Due to the cost I used their financing company on their website to purchase the bumper. When the bumper arrived, there was no label or indication of the product so I attempted to fit the bumper to my truck. After a day of attempts, I called their customer service and they stated the wrong bumper was sent and would not fit my vehicle. I arranged for them to pick up the bumper and send the correct one I originally ordered. It took about 1.5 months for them to retrieve the incorrect product, all while I was making payments for the financing. When they received the number back, they stated it had been used and could not issue a refund or send the correct product without charging me again. Since they would not issue a refund, I requested that they return the "used" bumper so I could attempt to sell it privately. They have taken another 6 months to tell me the logistics company has thrown out the bumper and cannot return the item to me because it would have cost them warehousing fees. I have continued to make the payments during this entire process as not to hurt my credit score but I cannot get anyone from the credit company or the company that sold me the bumper to understand or take my side. I've filed a complaint with the BBB and emailed anyone within the company leadership I could find online. At this point I don't know what my other options are to get the purchase refunded and remove the loan and payments from my credit. Any help is appreciated Edit: reading through everyone's replies. All are super helpful and going to explore all the options that have been mentioned. Since it was asked the company was bumperonly.com [link] [comments] |
Posted: 07 Jul 2021 06:37 PM PDT 26m, with 5k in the bank, and 2k in a Roth. Making 2500-2600 a month after taxes with my current job, 600-900 a month from freelance side work, and after rent, health insurance, groceries, student loan payments, other monthly expenses, and (projected) car insurance and gas, I'd have 1400 a month left over. These past few months have shown me making ~600-700 in net worth. My job is moving farther away, and with cold weather coming up, I need a car-both for commute, and just because I want to be able to get out and go on trips. I'm looking at places like Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist, as dealership prices are way high, and I've educated myself on the risks of buying private, asking for service records, Carfax, etc. The issue is, my friends have been split on giving advice for a car-either get a 2-3k beater to hold me over for a few years until my financial situation stabilizes or improves, or spend more (maybe 5-7k range?) on a nice(r) car that will last me a while. One thing of note is that I'd be able to lend 2-3k from my parents, effectively getting a loan of that amount with no interest and no time limit (I wouldn't want to keep my parents waiting that long though). Those experienced in buying used at a budget, what would be a smarter decision in the long run? I'd be more open to getting a cheap beater, but I know those can be maintenance money pits sometimes, although there are those impervious civics out there. I'd rather get a nice AWD vehicle with cargo space, although its more of a want than a need. In terms of WHAT car I want to get, I really like the idea of getting a 2nd or 3rd gen Outback. But I know that at my budget, I can't be a choosing beggar, so I'm willing to swallow my pride and get something else if I have to :) [link] [comments] |
Where to start when income is less than minimum payments? Posted: 07 Jul 2021 08:49 AM PDT I'm trying to help a family member get out of some debt (40k: car plus 20k in payday loans). The monthly income after rent and utilities is around 1000. Minimum payments of 10 payday loans (100-200% and higher interest) is about 2500. We're familiar with the Dave Ramsey plan of debt snowball but that also assumes you can make minimum payments on all and the extra goes to a single loan which doesn't apply here. Should we work on one at a time and not pay the others? Should we let the car get repossessed? Should we look at filing for bankruptcy? What are the options? Edit1: thanks so much for the advice. We're meeting again tonight to go over some options. We'll take another look at the budget and see what is possible in the short and long term. I really appreciate all the thoughtful responses everyone has provided! [link] [comments] |

Caught another employee looking at my personal information? Should I be worried? Posted: 07 Jul 2021 03:32 PM PDT Hello, I'm 22 years old and I recently started a new job at a furniture design company. I work in the office with another girl. (Shes 17, the boss has known her for a while). I recently filled out a W4 form for taxes last week and today I walk into the office and i see this 17 year old just reading my information like social security number/address and other stuff. It freaked me out a little bit because thats personal and i dont understand its just laying there. I didnt say anything because it caught me off guard & shes a child (i guess). Her mom also works with us. Should I be worried she was trying to steal my identity ? And if so, how can i protect myself or track my social security number? Thank you. [link] [comments] |
How to track an overseas payment made from another bank to my bank account? Posted: 07 Jul 2021 09:06 PM PDT Looking for advice: A company have paid into my business bank account overseas on the 18th of June - it should now have been cleared - it is the 8th of July. I have not received it and my bank have not received it. I have asked the company - and they say it was sent on the 18th - I am asking for them to check the status of the payment - but I am looking for further advice here. Is it possible for me to check the status of the payment somehow? Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |
