Costs Breakdown of Owning My Dog - Gary the Lab. Mix

    Posted: 03 Jul 2021 12:50 PM PDT

    Hey everyone,

I was playing with my dog today and started thinking about the costs associated with owning him. I remembered there was a post on this sub not too long ago that broke down the cost of owning a dog so I though it would be good to give y'all another dog ownership cost assessment. This is all the costs my GF and I have had in the first six months of owning our dog plus what we expect to pay for the rest of the year.

    Adoption Fee - $40

    Dog Crate - $65

Dog Collars, leashes, and seat belt - $45

    Dog Tag - $45

Heartworm, Tick, and Flea Preventative Medication - $150 every six months, $300/yr.

Toys - $80 to date, projecting another $40 in the next 6mo.

    Pet Insurance - $45/mo, $540/yr.

Dog Food - $55 every six weeks, $476/yr.

Hygiene (includes nail trims, shampoos, teeth care, etc.) - $14/mo., $170/yr.

Treats (we opt for a combination of bones and soft treats) - $21/mo., $250/yr.

    Annual Exam + Booster Shots - $300

    Total Cost: $2,351

Regarding pet insurance, unless you have a beefy savings account and no other things to save for (like say a down payment on a car/house, a wedding, etc.) -- or you are willing to put a large pet bill on a credit card -- you are better off getting pet insurance. Enrolling in this will make sure you can afford a large pet bill and not have to compromise on your pet's care. That said, do your research on each pet insurance provider and be sure to enroll your pet as soon as you can if you do decide to purchase it (pet insurance providers will not cover anything associated with an accident/illness that occurred before you enrolled your pet).

Hopefully this provides y'all an idea of how much a dog can cost in the first year. Obviously some of these expenses are optional/flexible, so it really comes down to how much you are willing to invest in certain things. At the end of the day, dog ownership is one of the most rewarding things you can do. Having this 55lb rugrat has been so much fun and has taught me a great deal.

Salary needed to live with family in San Francisco

    Posted: 03 Jul 2021 09:26 AM PDT

    Hello,

I am about to get an offer from a company in San Francisco. Right now I am located in Germany/Bavaria with a nice salary and we can afford to live in a house and generally do not need to count every penny/cent. We have two kids (2/4 years) in daycare. My wife is stay at home currently and we plan that she would stay at home in the US.

What would you think is needed for me as salary to roughly keep this standard in San Francisco?

My guesstimate would be that I need around 15k$ per month, which should be around 300k$ before tax per year?

Anyone can share some experience or thoughts?

Thanks a lot! To be honest we are a bit scared about moving there and the cost of living.....

Edit: Surprised how much the discussion revolved around my wife not working. For one I should have mentioned that the Visa we are on would not allow her to work. And second I still think that it is good if she gets a break as well. I think mental happiness will go up for all of us. And a divorce down the line will be more expensive than some cash now for daycare....

Edit 2: Thanks for all the replies, great to get some thoughts and different points of view.

700 credit score but get denied for loans

    Posted: 03 Jul 2021 10:43 AM PDT

So my credit scores say 702/732/706

    I have absolutely 0 debt.

5300 in credit cards and barely use 1%

    I make 55k a year. I have 9k cash in the bank

I'm looking to buy a used truck. First I found an older one for 7000 that I liked but didn't want to spend all my cash on it so I applied for a personal loan for 10k from a credit union. Got denied. Email with the denial had my score at a 731

I applied through my bank for a "check ready car loan" for max 30k because I figured ok I'll just try to buy something newer from a dealership.

Is this normal to get denied when you have what is considered good credit? What am I missing here. I've worked on my credit for years to make sure I have nothing in collections and nothing negative.

I see some trucks in my price range on carvana sometimes but the interest rate that they show me (soft check) is like 12%. I don't want to pull the trigger on there and risk a third hard inquiry and still be denied/waste my time.

My employer is asking to be a named insured on my auto insurance.

    Posted: 02 Jul 2021 06:51 PM PDT

I got an email from my employer that told me to add them to my auto insurance without any explanation as to why. I drive my own personal vehicle, not a company car, and it seems weird for them to be asking this and I don't feel comfortable. Does anyone know why an employer would be asking this?

Bank ATM ate $260 and is closed for holiday weekend.

    Posted: 03 Jul 2021 12:54 PM PDT

Last night I went to deposit $260 in 20's in my bank's ATM when I inserted the money into the feeder it closed and made a weird noise and did not start counting the money as usual, the bank screen popped up with cash transactions currently unavailable and only the option to return my card or another transaction with the money tray still locked closed! The ATM continued to say cash transactions unavailable and my bank account does not have any record of a cash deposit. Worst of all I cant even have the bank start a investigation as they are closed for the holiday weekend along with the customer service Line. The only live person to talk to until Tuesday is card services to report your card lost or stolen and told me they cannot help at all and to call the customer service line.

    I f’d up and can’t pay rent

    Posted: 03 Jul 2021 02:09 PM PDT

EDIT Thank you all for the suggestions and kind words. I've learned a valuable lesson here and I will pay it forward.

In the years and years I've been renting apartments, condos and homes, I can't make July rent. It is honestly so embarrassing that a single miscalculation has left me incredibly short for rent on 7/9.

Stress causes more stress. That's what happened, I am so stressed from 10 million other things (which my body doesn't react well to due to trauma) that I blanked and paid car taxes instead of holding the money for rent.

It's such an endless cycle, paycheck to paycheck.

My landlord already has the check dated for 7/9….what do I do?

What are some ways to save money on groceries without significant sacrifices?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2021 06:11 PM PDT

For instance, a local chain nearby sells frozen pepper strips for the same price or cheaper as fresh peppers. They don't taste much different than cooked fresh ones and I never have to worry about wasting them as they won't go bad in the freezer.

Stuck with a terrible 401k - Is there a way out?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2021 08:39 PM PDT

My employer matches 401k contributions 1:1 up to 4% of my salary. This is good.

My employer runs their 401k through American Funds. They charge between 1.2% and 1.4%. This really sucks.

Short of begging them to switch to Vanguard or someone else with better fees, is there any way I can move the money from the American Funds account into a different 401k account with lower fees? I'm not even sure if I can independently set up a 401k account.

    Thanks for the insight.

Got myself into a broke-cycle. Struggling to figure out the escape

    Posted: 03 Jul 2021 05:35 PM PDT

Well I did it again. I have a bad habit of going into a depressive slump and spending all my money. Two years ago, I found myself in a cycle where I'd end up completely broke half way through the month. I ended up barely squeezing out of this by taking a new job the doubles my salary, coming up with a plan to get myself out of the small amounts of debt I had and get straight.

But here I again. Last month I ran out of money about half way through, really squeezed to try and get out of it. And not 5 days into this month I'm out again. Right now the problem is several accounts with reoccurring payments. Rent is the obvious heavy hitter. Reducing that is unlikely as my credit score wouldn't allow and cash reserve wouldn't allow for a move and I need to move somewhat close to work because I can't drive. I have around 4 credit card/loans open at the moment. One personal loan with around $6k left that I was paying down from $8k, but I've been missing payments the past months. Two smaller loans with high interest rates. One almost gone, and the other probably at a couple hundred left that if I had the ability to pay off immediately wouldn't be an issue, but the monthly interests make the payments about a few hundred themselves. These I'm pretty much stuck without something drastic like bankruptcy I assume. I expected to be clean of all debt this year, but obviously that didn't work out. Hopefully though, I can still eliminate the credit card.

Outside those there are some other hard hitters: Power. My power bill was significantly higher this month, probably because of summer. Obviously I can only do so much to reduce this. Mobile. Unfortunately I put myself in a bad situation not expecting to fall this low and have a relatively high mobile bill including plans and device payments. This is about $250/m right now and I don't see a way out of this. Then there's also a lease I have that comes out to around $350/m. This I believe can be dropped. Also thanks to last month, a huge chunk of my pay check got eaten by NSF fees and repayments to short "loan" apps I used to make it through.

I'm paid monthly. The aforementioned stuff has left me broke already with just a few bucks left big problem this month. Outside of being broke is I haven't paid power or mobile. Thankfully I got rent taken care of in time. I'm looking at selling some things to maybe get $600 more this month, but it's no guarantee as to the timeline and I don't have a lot of things with a high resale value. I have a lot of expensive shit, but most of it likely can't be resold do to their niche uses.

Here's what I do no can be done. There are some smaller items, mostly regular (nearly daily) $20-30 purchases I could eliminate if I muster up the willpower. That might give me a few hundred more per month, but other than that, I have so many monthly debts, most which seem they can't be eliminated which eat me fast. It's going to be difficult to avoid the same NSF stuff this months. I don't want to lose $1000 due a crazy negative balance come August.

I could also look into what I did last time, basically finding a job to double my salary again, but while possible it would take months of prep that I don't have. I also need to start saving and do some things to help get my life in order, that seem to be out of reach at the moment because of the financial situation. It's embarrassing, because I make ok money, but. I suppose I could do this no matter how much I'm making.

47k+ In Credit Card Debt - need suggestions

    Posted: 03 Jul 2021 08:01 PM PDT

I currently have approximately $47k+ in credit card debt between 3 cards. My FICO score is ~730. I already have $30k in unsecure loans from another screw up with credit, and I don't have room on my mortgage &/or home equity to refinance, and I do not have any equity. I am able to afford payments, although I'm closing in on my limits. I need to reduce my interest, put a timeline on paying them off (less than 10 years) and close off these cards.

I applied for a $47k & $30k loan, but both were rejected. I think because it was above $20k....thinking about applying again.

I would love to be able to take all 3 credit cards into a single 8-10 year loan....I doubt that's possible.

    Any suggestions/ideas?

Bill being sent to collections after doctor waited too long to submit bill to insurance

    Posted: 03 Jul 2021 08:10 AM PDT

I had a medical procedure done and most of it was taken care of. Over a year later, I found out the doctor failed to submit some of the bill to my insurance on time. Since the doctor waited longer than 12 months to submit a claim, my insurance company refuses to cover it.

I repeatedly tried to deal with the doctor's office and they said I was responsible for the bill. Now, the the doctor's office has sold the debt to collections and they're saying I owe $600.

I am not sure who to talk to in order to get this settled.

    Disposition of family house

    Posted: 03 Jul 2021 11:37 AM PDT

I have a situation which like many, is as much /r/relationshipadvice as it is /r/personalfinance.

In 1998 or so, my mother approached me in desperation. Her house was going to be taken away in a tax sale. She had no money or income, and I had some savings. I bought back her house with $4K or so, it was all of my savings. Three years later to the day, she phoned me once again to be rescued from the next tax sale. She hadn't paid a single property tax bill. This time, I didn't have any savings but I did have a steady income. So, this time I asked her to sell me the house for $1, I got a small mortgage for the tax sale, and since then the house has been mine and she has lived there rent-free. The unspoken agreement is that I would never abuse this landlord relationship, leaving my mother high/dry, homeless, etc. But neither have I - due to difficulty with my mother - kept up the house to a letting standard.

She is now nearing 80 years old and, by hook and by crook, we have convinced her to move into a retirement home which she can afford from her monthly SS income.

My next plan was to clear out the house of belongings and junk somehow (it's a hoarding situation), and then to sell the house.

Now, numerous family members have stated their casual interest in the house.

Additionally, my mother herself is now talking of spending some of her money to fix up the house (which is currently in near condemnable condition) and to rent it out or even move back in. Or in other words, she still talks about the asset as if it is her house.

I on the other hand, feel entitled to profit off of this situation, considering I was the only one to help out in the prior situations. But... I feel there is a high likelihood (money, plus multiple generations of irresponsible financial choices) that if I do so, I will become a pariah and possibly even lose my relationship with my mother.

Since the property is uninsurable and there is requisite risk in ownership, I feel like I am the only one with any sense of urgency about unloading the house now that it is vacant. It is full of my mother's (and prior generations') belongings and garbage, that nobody else is particularly interested in removing. I asked my mother if she would facilitate meeting some "hoarding cleanup" vendors, who would like to visit to quote. And she politely declined to help out.

I estimate the commercial value of the house is between $10k - $40k. I don't particularly need the money.

I won't mince words, I need advice. I am just too deep in the situation to have a gut feel for what to do.

    Salary Negotiation

    Posted: 03 Jul 2021 06:18 PM PDT

I'm currently in a rotational program at a large bank in a major US city. I've been in this program for about a year now and joined the program right out of college (July 2020) and I will place within a team within the next month. I expect to be placed as a business analyst in the current team that I am on. My current salary as a rotational associate is around $60k, give or take with overtime and bonus. I'm expecting that my salary will increase as I place in a permanent role. I would love a salary around $70k in my new role, but I'm expecting the initial offer to be lower. What are best ways to negotiate for the salary that I want? I have brought great value to each team that I rotated in and the recognition that I have received so far speaks on that. I'm afraid that negotiating will limit my chances of placing within this team. Joining this team as a business analyst would really put me in a good starting point in my career trajectory. Are there any business analysts here that wouldn't mind giving salary insight so I know how much money I should request? Does anyone have advice on any negotiation tactics I could use to get the most money possible? Thank you and happy holidays.

I’m 13 and I need some general saving advice

    Posted: 03 Jul 2021 08:05 PM PDT

I can make about $70-$100 a week and I wanted to get somewhat serious about my money because the last time I had $200 it went down to $20 in the same week.

First I was wondering how much of my money should I be putting aside as some type of "emergency fund" or something like that. I was also wondering if only buying something if I can buy it twice is a good idea since I was planning to make relatively big purchase.

Any type of advice, even if it's not completely related to my questions, will be appreciated.

What am I doing wrong here? (20 years old and homeless)

    Posted: 03 Jul 2021 07:35 PM PDT

I'm not sure if this just comes with experience or what but I am exhausted. Long story short im a 20 year old single male that works 7 days a week, overtime, and still can't afford basic living necessities. I have food covered, but heat and shelter have been a huge hurdle for whatever reason. I can't ever seem to find housing or be accepted for any housing. I live in a rural area and my vehicle just took a crap (still making payments on it). Im within walking distance to work so that hasn't been a huge issue but im running out of options as I've extended my welcome to most of my peers. I'm still in good relations with most people I know though, im respectful and cooperative. Im just super frustrated because I know people who make much less say on like government assistance that are also my age and they seem to be budgeting just fine. Does being single make that much of a difference?

What should I do with the car money I had saved up?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2021 07:33 PM PDT

I have about 15k in my bank account and had intended to buy a car and late July or early August but due to the current pricings, I don't want to anymore. I intend to wait until later this year or next when prices get back to normal. I had wanted to buy a hyundai accent or nissan versa but it's ridiculous to pay over something that depreciates so fast. So what should I do in the meantime since I do intend to still use for a car.

Advice on what/where to live in the short term if I sell my house.

    Posted: 03 Jul 2021 11:28 AM PDT

I'd love to take advantage of this crazy market and sell my house. I'd clear close to $150k before realtor fees, etc. I'm a single dude in a 4/2.5. Don't need the space, maintenance, etc.

What's the best idea for short term housing if I want to try to wait out this housing market before buying something more suited to my needs? Month to month lease? I'm in suburban Atlanta, Ga.

Mother may be choosing to die; I will need to untangle the mess and need some advice.

    Posted: 03 Jul 2021 09:07 PM PDT

    Hey everyone,

As the title mentions, my mother is currently in a life-threatening scenario where she needs a new liver to continue living. It's a hard road ahead and tonight she called and expressed to myself, my sister, and my father-in-law that she wishes to die. We're not sure if it's a "bad day" or if she just is fed up with being poked and prodded and whatnot - but she said it. I'm a planner and feel the need to be ready in case this occurs. I am 100% prepared to get a lawyer to do untangling, but I wanted to see if there is anything I'm missing.

First and foremost: She is married to my stepfather for 15 years now. I'm aware that some of this turns up to be marital property, etc. She does not have a will, so I'm sure probate gets involved in some of this. We live in the state of Wisconsin.

    The Low-Down:

    She currently has the following:

    • A Duplex that is in her name only. She has about 14 years on the loan left and a balance of around $94,000. She has two tenants; one is my sister, one is a renter. Additionally, the intention is that she's wanted the duplex to go to my sister if she passed.
    • She shares a house with my stepfather. Both are on the loan. There are 13 years left on this loan, I'm unsure of the balance.
    • She's got multiple credit cards and about a total of $12,000 of credit card debt or personal loan debt. The debt is in her name only.
    • A car that is in both her and my stepfather's name.
    • A life insurance policy. I am the named beneficiary. She did take out a loan against the total balance, there is still some left over. I'm assuming I'll need to use some of this to pay debt she owes or some such.
    • A pension and Social Security (I'm not sure if those just disappear when she dies or what happens.)
    • Hospital bills. Lots of hospital bills.

    My questions:

    • I believe the debts are "the estate's" debt after she dies. My stepdad should not have to take on those debts if they are only in her name, correct?
    • Does the life insurance get used as part of the estate to handle those debts?
    • Can they take the house to pay the debts of the estate? What about the duplex? (Obviously I'd prefer neither happens.)
    • Does the Duplex become my step-father's due to marital property or can we execute her wishes?
    • Does this all go to probate since she never wrote a will? Do I have time to get a will written if she decides this is truly it? She's totally lucid right now.
    • What am I missing? I'm currently her financial PoA (she has signed all that prior to getting to this point).

I appreciate any and all help folks can give. Thank you.

My CPA still hasn’t sent me e-file authorization Form 8878 for a tax filing extension

    Posted: 03 Jul 2021 08:39 PM PDT

I asked my CPA to file an extension fFptm 4868) for my taxes 2 months ago, but he still hasn't sent me e-file authorization form 8878 and hasn't replied to my last email asking for a heads-up.

The reason why I needed an extension was because one of the tax documents that I needed for my tax return wasn't prepared yet from a different CPA. He also needed some info from that CPA which I didn't have, but he (my current CPA), said that he'd contact that CPA for the info.

Once I received the tax document that the other CPA finally prepared last month, I uploaded it to my CPA's portal last month and let him know of that while asking him for a heads-up, but he didn't reply.

Since he didn't send me Form 8878 to yet which would authorize him to e-file the extension, does that mean that he definitely didn't file the extension? Or could he have filed it without Form 8878?

I uploaded all of the tax documents that he needs, but he's not responsive to email. Is he waiting until it's closer to the new Oct. 15th deadline (if he filed the extension)?

Should I find a new CPA?

    This is in the US.

Insurance company wants to declare my car a total loss over nearly nothing.

    Posted: 03 Jul 2021 08:28 PM PDT

Posting to hopefully get some answers and make sure I'm not making any sort of mistakes here. I am also leaving out some identifying details for anonymity, though the important info is for the most part exactly the same. This is SC

I bought a new midsize sedan for $31,000, and paid it off after 7 years. The car is immaculate, having 50k miles and not a single dent, scratch, accident, etc. After vacuuming it and wiping it down, it looks indistinguishable from a new 2021 car on a parking lot.

For personal reasons, I was looking to sell it for $15k, which was about 1k under bluebook and I was regularly getting offers of $14k.

An 'act of god' happened, and broke the panoramic sunroof and back window, 2 pieces of non-moving glass. Absolutely nothing else was damaged. No water damage, no dents, no paint scratches, no sunroof mechanics, etc. Perfect other than having to vacuum some glass and replace the panes.

I started a claim with my full coverage insurance. Sent them every picture we could of the car after the incident. In the meantime, I got a quote from a local body shop for repairs.

The body shop came back and said it would be $1800 for repairs.

Then the insurance got back to us, said their adjuster quoted $10,000+ and they'll be declaring the car a total loss, and to send pictures so they can adequately offer a price for it.

    So, my questions are:

Am I missing something here? Other than the car now being considered 'salvage' on the title, is there anything stopping me from paying the $1800 to get it fixed, paying to have the title say 'salvage rebuilt' and inspected so it can be driven again, then pocketing the thousands extra in cash?

Is this normal or is the insurance company making a mistake?

If I don't mention that I think they're wrong, can I be held liable in the future or the money taken back despite showing hundreds of pictures to the insurance, agreeing to have an adjuster come out, complying with all their requests, etc? I've never hid anything or lied to them.

How much are they likely going to offer me in cash? Does the amount change and by how much if I decide I want to keep the car? I understand this varies heavily depending on information I didn't give, but what's a good estimate?

I'm torn between thinking this is a miracle and thinking it's going to be a nightmare.

    Thanks for any advice.

edit: I understand that salvage title means I will not be able to get more than liability insurance in the future, and that the resell value drops drastically. If the insurance company gives a decent payout in cash and I can keep the car, I am fine with that.

    2. but I don't want to fill that out b/c i haven't even started applying for the part time job yet ; i don't want to put an amount to be witheld when I havent' even started that part time job yet
    3. so since i don't have that part time job right now, would it be ok to fill out stepts 2-4 on the w-4 for the part time job when I get it? will it still be accurate
      1. if not, would i have to sign a new w-4 with day time job after getting that part time job?
      2. that ju

Can someone explain to me the process of getting a car loan, paying it off, and not paying a lot in interest?

Hi! I'm a 20F looking to buy my "first" car. First is in air quotes because I bought a used car last year off of facebook, but it ended up being a lemon more or less (which I should have seen coming) and when that one crapped out I was given my grandmas old car. Both are old (the first a 2000, this one a 2003) and I worry about ending up with it crapping out or putting a lot of money in for repairs. The car I currently have has had a few issues, but I got it taken care of and it's fine right now.

I have a good credit score (700s) and I want to continue to build it. What's the best way to get a loan so I can purchase a better car, while not being screwed over for money as well?
