    Los Angeles, CA

My sister, 25, accidentally started a small kitchen fire at a Marriott hotel in February by putting frozen shrimp tempura in boiling oil. Only the microwave and ceiling were damaged by the fire but the room flooded after the fire alarm went out. Nobody got hurt except her. She was at the hotel because she is a healthcare worker so the government subsidized her stay. Neither of us understand much about insurance. We don't make that kind of money. How do we go about this? Somebody please help

Is being a claims processor (NOT adjuster) an easy job?

    Posted: 08 Jul 2021 11:08 PM PDT

Is it low stress? I wouldn't have to talk to the public, so that's good...it's not like customer service or anything...I would hate that lol...oh and I'd be working from home if I get the job.

The job is for a benefit claim processor position, and they said no experience needed, and that's good because I know almost nothing about health insurance. But I do have all the skills they're looking for so I'm hopeful.

I heard claims adjusters are often stressed out, but what about processors? Like the people who do the data entry and stuff...I have years of data entry experience, that's why I applied. And a lot of what they're looking for matched with my strengths.

My second interview is next week and I'm getting a little nervous. What is being a processor like?

At fault driver is ignoring calls from insurance, but posted about the accident on social media.

    Posted: 08 Jul 2021 06:43 PM PDT

I was rear-ended by this guy on 6/29/2021 and I live in Nevada. I called the police but they never showed up to the scene of the accident, so we don't have a police report unfortunately.

The responder on the phone told me that we could wait for a cop, they may or may not show up, and we can go ahead and exchange information and leave.

I got an attorney, and they're pretty much handling everything and I'm getting medical treatment because I am in pain.

It's been over a week now and I was told the adjusters can't get a hold of the at fault driver. So I did some snooping and found his social media. He posted about the accident, our cars (I'm even in the background of the picture) and he even admitted that his "brakes failed".

What happens when an at fault driver can't be reached/ignores calls from the insurance?

What can the insurance do and what could happen from here? If you have any useful input at all, it would be appreciated!

edit: if it helps, we both have state farm. thanks everyone!

    Pursuing Agent- Expert Advice?

    Posted: 09 Jul 2021 06:15 AM PDT

I have been wanting to be an agent for some years now. A few years ago a brain tumor set me back some, but I'm up and going full speed now! So I have a few questions for some past or present agents! 1) The agency I'm looking into ( I know a current agent who been a mentor for me I plan working along side with) is ALFA. They are in the south east region of the US. Can any of y'all shine some light of maybe some positive, or even negative observations of this company? I would like to get some opinions from other sources. Strange I know haha. 2) I'm sure there is a forum somewhere, I looked. Is there ANY advice you would give to new agents? Things to consider? Pros vs Cons. ETC. My mentor LOVES it and he wants me on board. I'm currently studying to get my license soon!! 3) Lastly, they pay schemes. For new agents they do a couple things. 1) 50k a year for a few years while you build your book of business, then go full time commission from your book. 2) They give you a book worth around 1 million and you continue to build it from there.

I thought hmm guarantee money, is nice while I build. Then I thought, well they help you get established while you build off the book they give. Essentially they are about the same as pay goes, I assume. You just have a couple options

So the question is, what do you recommend and why.

I know all this is a lot and lengthy but it is so appreciated to those who do reply and give input. Thanks!

Does car owners witness statement count in this case?

    Posted: 08 Jul 2021 10:05 PM PDT

I was recently in a fender bender in a parking area. I was driving someone else's car with their permission and the owner was standing right there watching the accident outside of the car. Because I was driving their car, their insurance company is liable. I have told my side of the story to the insurance company as I got hit and the other participate has told another story. Therefore, it has fallen to witnesses. The opposing party has no witnesses and I have the owner of the vehicle as a witness. Will the owner of the car's statement be able to be used as they are supposedly an involved party as they are the policy holder and owner of the car? I think its pretty ridiculous that a witness who was standing right there would not be able to be used as a testimony. This accident is in California, USA.

I don't want to mess a guy's life up over an accident

    Posted: 08 Jul 2021 05:52 AM PDT

I got rear-ended yesterday on the highway, minor damage to my bumper but it's a Tesla so probably $1-2k to repair, I don't know. The guy who hit me got out of jail recently, is in recovery and has liability only, probably minimum I don't know what his deductible is but I would guess $500 or $1,000. I assume minimum liability coverage would cover the repair after deductible.

If I claim this on my insurance instead I have a few questions:

    1. Will my rates go up? I made a preliminary claim on my insurance and it determined I was not at fault.
    2. If I claim it on his insurance could they drop him?

Basically, this guy made a mistake and I don't want to mess someone up who's in recovery. If he's taking me for a ride, sucks to suck, but if he's not it's extremely expensive to be poor. Absolute worst case scenario I eat my deductible which is no big deal, but I'm thinking of offering to split my deductible with him on my insurance so it doesn't mess him up too bad.

Is this a mistake? Should I just file through his insurance? I will probably still offer to split his deductible with him.

    Michigan New Resident

    Posted: 09 Jul 2021 01:05 AM PDT

    Hi,

I'm inexperienced with insurance and the logistics of moving, so I apologize for my ignorance.

I just moved to Michigan for a job using my parents' car, which is insured and titled/registered under their name in a different state. I am currently under their plan, since I did not need to drive where I was from.

From what I understand, Michigan has no grace period for new residents so I will need to have Michigan no fault insurance on that car. I read online that Michigan allows people to insure cars not in their name. I wanted to make sure this is true and what issues I might face if I were to insure their car.

I'm not sure if the car has not been paid off fully so would transferring titles be possible if needed?

    Claim closed

    Posted: 09 Jul 2021 12:47 AM PDT

I had an open claim with my car insurance company. They sent me a letter saying that they sent a check (wrong address) and if I want it I need to respond to them.

    Here is an overview:

    1. I was rear-ended by an uninsured driver almost three years ago (Oct 2018).
    2. I had uninsured driver insurance and opened a claim with my insurance for diminished value and personal injury.
    3. They refused the Diminished value claim so I took them to small claims and was awarded $3,000.
    4. I said I would wait on the personal injury claim to see how my body reacted but said I would settle for $3,000.
    5. They offered $500 and I said I would wait to see.
    6. Fast forward to two years later and they said they closed my claim and sent a check for less than 3K, but they sent it to my old address, which I have never used.

So my question is what are my options. I don't like the way they did this.

A phone call would have been better, but here we are.

I Hit a Deer in MA

Hello all! Unfortunately, I have just hit a deer here in MA. I was wondering, is this a surcharge-able incident? Replacing my mirror is going to be 2400 bucks, ouch, but I'm assuming that an incident with an animal isn't my fault, so will I get surcharged if I file a claim in MA?

Backed Up Into an Illegally Parked Work Van, Need Help!!!

    Posted: 08 Jul 2021 06:44 PM PDT

(Posting for a family member) : Insurance Agents Impinion Welcomed!

" So this my situation I was parked at a strip mall (private property in Whittier, California) in the last parking spot available in the row. All angled parking not straight in parking. There was a window company van parked next to me parked on the striped area which is a "No Parking" spot. I backed out and his window holding rack on the side of the van was hanging over into my parking spot and as I backed out it caught my rear bumper and cracked the right rear light. Luckily I heard the crunch immediately stopped to avoid further damage. I'd like to know if I report this to my insurance (AAA) would I be at fault in this situation or is it a 50/50 situation? Should I just report it to his insurance? Keep in mind the window guys has nothing to report because no damage was received on his end so the ball is in my court. He did provide his insurance info and LP #. Any feedback is greatly appreciated."

Lightning strike was sent from r/homeowners

    Posted: 08 Jul 2021 03:44 PM PDT

I was directed to post here from r/homeowners

So my house the other day was struck by lightning, bounced from a tree (which in everyone's opinion except my insurance company thinks needs to be pulled)

My electrician fixed some major issues with the house already, but as he says, this all needs more attention and "I believe it to be, circuit 24, the largest problem in the electrical system of the home. Full replacement of antiquated wiring would be the safest and most cost effective way to ensure the problems are corrected."

I've been advised to push my insurance company into doing a Megger test on my home. (House is from 1856).

I have also been advised to hire a public adjuster, after my insurance company's adjuster on the phone told me " we'll figure it out with your electrician, and we'll decide what we will pay " and " well I cant come look at anything for a few weeks "

Now, I am a painting contractor, I've dealt with insurance work before and that's just never how I've seen this handled. I feel a little over my head, and was looking for any and all advice. Any questions I can answer I will, I'm sure I've left out some details I am not even thinking of. Between work being so hectic and now this I'm a little strung out and stressed.

    Thank you r/insurance

My parked car was hit out of state

    Posted: 08 Jul 2021 01:15 PM PDT

As the title implies, my parked car was hit out of state. My car is registered and insured through Geico in NYS (not the city) and my car was hit in Massachusetts. The person was kind enough to leave there number but before I go any further I need a little advice.

Whoever hit me only scuffed and slightly cracked my bumper (I have to assume they were under the influence since we were at a winery and my car was parked pretty far away and I was in the lines, not parked like a jerk or anything). Since the damage is minor I'm wondering if it is even worth my while to open the can of worms and fix it.

I'm hoping someone can answer some questions for me.

    1. Will my rates go up, even if I am clearly not at fault?
    2. What is the process/ does the process change for out of state claims? Me being in NY and them being in Mass?

Any help would be so appreciated!

    Thank you

Possible life insurance fraud in moms name, taken out

    Posted: 08 Jul 2021 11:40 AM PDT

So a couple weeks ago, my mom gets a letter from a life insurance company we have never heard from. My mom can't write or speak or even properly write English, which is a key point. I open it and someone tried to open a life insurance in her name but they messed up on her DOB, and that's why they sent it back. They also put me as the beneficiary. The policy was started in mid June and the writing was not mine or my moms. The odd thing I thought was, why would someone try to a life insurance on her and put me as the beneficiary. Is this a scam to send money? Anyone have an experience with this? Or should we just ignore it. Thank in advance for any help.

Forgot to mention. The name was under a name my mom hasn't used in over 20 years since she was with my biological dad. So that was another red flag. The company is also senior life insurance

Son's car - a MINT 1990 New Yorker Landau he LOVED was just totaled after an accident. Help?

    Posted: 08 Jul 2021 07:54 PM PDT

I fully realize that a 1990 New Yorker might not be everyone's dream car, but it was his, bought with his own money - AND IT WAS AWESOME! Truly that fabled "ittle old lady" car, only driven to church, never driven in the rain - stunning plush maroon - seating for many, and mint inside and out.

He was in a "no fault" accident on Monday. When I picked him up, I saw a pretty good dent near the front wheel, but it didn't look terrible. The air bag did go off, and I know that's an expensive fix. This happened on a suburban street, so the speed limit was 30. I know that there's often more to repairs than one can see, and I know that the value of a "regular ol' 1990 New Yorker" ain't much, but this thing was showroom fresh (which may or may not make it desirable, regardless) buuuuut, it was his way to get to work. The car is currently at the shop it was towed to. Any next move for us here? Thanks for any/all input!

    Florida Boat Insurance Question

    Posted: 08 Jul 2021 03:59 PM PDT

I am wondering under what circumstances would water damage to the inside of my jet ski be covered under normal boaters insurance, Geico. Specifically I am wondering about manufacturer installed standard equipment malfunction. Jet skis use a system called a bailer to remove water from inside the hull while up on plane. This is a passive system that uses the venturi on the jet housing to suck water inside the hull through a tube and expel it in the jet. It is possible under very certain circumstances for the tube to create a siphon and fill the hull with water. While it is not possible to sink MOST jet skis due to the buoyancy of the hull, severe damage can still occur if the hull is filled with water. From what I understand I would be covered if I were to leave my drain plug out and fill it that way, would the above described malfunction be covered?

PLEASE HELP! T-Boned Auto Collision with Liability Insurance. Legal Advice Needed.

    Posted: 08 Jul 2021 03:07 PM PDT

I was involved in an auto collision when a vehicle T-boned my vehicle as I was driving to work. The other party was clearly at fault. Their insurance has accepted responsibility and declared my vehicle as a total loss (inoperable, damage to passenger-side outer body and sub-frame, airbags deployed). Both parties have liability only insurance. My reasoning for liability only is that I drive only 7 miles one way to work 5 days per week at odd hours of the day with minimal traffic. The problem is their insurance limit for property damage is $10,000 and my vehicle is worth >$20,000 current market value. The settlement offered to me by their claims adjuster is for $10,000 signed release and to retake possession of the totaled vehicle with salvage title. I refused and asked if they were able to sell/auction my totaled vehicle to add another $10,000 on top of the $10,000 settlement for a total of $20,000 at which I would be willing to settle for. They replied that normally that is what they would do however due to the insured's policy and limits they would not be able to do so in this case.

After seeking legal advice, I understand these are my options moving forward:

    1. Accept the $10k and sell/auction the whole vehicle or part it out myself (investing time and work) and be done with it
    2. Don't accept the $10k (because they won't give it to me without a signed release) and sue the insured for the whole amount. If I win my case, I get the $10k settlement from their insurance for property damage and a judgement against the insured for the rest. If I lose, I get nothing.

I will not have legal representation and I will need to represent myself. The questions I have are the following:

    1. If I decide to sue the insured would I need to sue for the WHOLE amount (this case for >$20,000)? I am attempting to avoid litigation in civil superior court (any cases worth >$10,000) since I have read that it is a slower, more tedious, and expensive process than small claims and less forgiving for those legally-challenged like myself hence hiring a lawyer is recommended.
    2. If I decide to sue the insured would it be possible to do so for $10,000 in small claims court (maximum allowed in California), collect on that judgment, and then sign the release from their property damage settlement for the remaining $10,000? This is a total of $20,000 at which I would be willing to settle for. Reason for keeping litigation in small claims court is that it is easier, quicker, and less hassle because I need to represent myself.

Thank you for any and all feedback. I am entirely a novice about legal matters.

    All State Milewise Feedback, Please

    Posted: 08 Jul 2021 01:35 PM PDT

I did in fact switch my Auto Insurance from Geico (15 minutes didnt save me Sh**BTW) to AllState Milewise because I rarely drive more than 2,500 Miles per year.

For the most part I'm satisfied, but I would love to hear back from others who also use AllState Milewise, its App and Usage Monitor for your car. the price is broken down into an automatic daily rate (whether car is driven that day or not) plus a "per mile" rate based on actual usage which is supposedly monitored by the Tracker inserted in auto's Diagnostics port and then displayed on the Milewise App. I have the App on my Phone only, not on my PC or Android Tablet.

So please let me know your experience from any aspect including rate for Per Day and Actual Mileage, as well as functionality and accuracy of Milewise App and Tracker.

    Thanks in advance.

    Insurance Rate too high?

    Posted: 08 Jul 2021 10:59 AM PDT

Notes: 21 years old. Male. Licensed since Jan 2020. Started financing in May 2020. 2015 Nissan Altima at 78k miles (started with 68k). Pennsylvania.

So when setting up my insurance I didn't have any help unfortunately. It was my first time stepping out into the "adult" world so I tried my best to research and figure everything out, but I believe I was being a bit naive when doing so.

I went with Progressive because they offered me the lowest out of the 4 that I looked at. I originally had a $2500 deductible for Coll & Comp coverage (I recently realized and changed to $500). After over a year my payments went down to $219/month, but after updating my coverages it is now $335/month. My rates seemed fine for what I had chosen. However, I recently checked Geico and they quoted me for the same coverage/options, but about $270/month.

I was doing some research on Reddit, and noticed people asking about coverages, rates, etc. I saw people mention something about 100/300/100, but I wasn't sure what that was and I wanted to share my details as well in hopes someone out there could help me.

What are the basic/minimum coverages that I should look to have? Which provider would be best for me considering the info I've given; Progessive? Geico? Liberty Mutual? What is 100/300/100?

    Should I take the job?

    Posted: 08 Jul 2021 04:39 PM PDT

I recently got a job offer from selectquote for a position as a insurance agent, I don't have my license but they said they will help me get it and I'll get paid 20$ a hour for training and commission after that. But when I went on indeed to review how people felt working for them, they said the hours were 10-12 hours a day, and it was mostly cold calls and really hard to meet quotas. I want to take the job because I don't have anything better right now, but I don't want to work long hours like that, I was told by the guy on the phone I'd only work 8am-5pm which I'm fine with, but I don't want to get myself into something I'm going to regret. Any advice?

MVA 3 Months Later - Finally contacted an attorney. Sanity check

    Posted: 08 Jul 2021 10:39 AM PDT

Hi! I am currently located in Colorado Springs, CO, and was in a MVA on 31 March of this year (rear-ended). Over three months later, I am still under active treatment with seemingly no end in sight as I'm dealing with some pretty major nerve pain from the accident and now a degenerative condition with my spine that will get worse before it gets better. I begin pain management next week and am hoping that provides some sort of relief, but if not then surgery is likely in the next 6-9 months. I was rear-ended in the accident, and their insurance company has taken 100% liability for the accident.

Now that the background is there, here's my question. I got the recommendation to reach out to an personal injury attorney since I have ZERO clue how to handle settlements especially as it appears my treatment will likely continue past the 3 yr SOL in Colorado. Plus the initial consultation was free so it didn't hurt to hop on a call. The guy on the phone was a head partner at the firm, and seemed genuine in his advise. Didn't push me to sign up, give me some great settlement promise, etc. All the things I was worried about. He asked me to "test" the at-fault insurance claim handler by asking a simple question. He said that if I asked for the at-fault party's Bodily Injury limits on the phone and then in writing (reason being to give "timely notice" to my insurance company if the other party was underinsured), and the handler openly provided that information, that I likely wouldn't need an attorney as that shows good faith they are more forthcoming than most with information and will likely also be forthcoming when it comes to settling. But, he added, if they won't provide the information or they give reasons why they are unable to give it to me, then hiring an attorney (him or another firm) might be in my best interest as you are allowed to be given that information by Colorado law.

My question is, is this a valid "test" of an injury claim adjuster? Is it actually true that they should give you that information when requested for the purpose of covering any underinsured policy? This is my first, and hopefully ONLY, major accident and I am treading deep water when it comes to how to handle the situation. Additionally, one other question I've had is that because my treatment is expected to extend beyond the 3 year SOL, and any doctor that sees my diagnosis would likely provide their concurrence to that end, should I wait until the 3 years to prove that is valid? Or would a claim adjuster take into account a doctor's opinion that my treatment will last longer than that at this point?

Thanks for any advice! This community always seems to give some of the best info!

Procedure to start short-term disability for father

    Posted: 08 Jul 2021 01:55 PM PDT

Hello all, I apologize in advance if this is not the correct sub and please let me know where to post this instead. My father went to his primary doctor a few weeks ago due to chest pain. Unfortunately, a lung mass was found and it's most likely cancerous. He has additional testing being done at the end of the month to check the severity, but he is getting weaker every day.

My father is still working, but what would be the procedure for him to start disability from work due to his illness? I am not sure if he even has short-term or long-term disability insurance. Would it be inappropriate if I emailed his company's HR department to understand the steps and paperwork involved in the process?

I want to make sure he gets the physician's approvals and signatures because it's incredibly hard to get any appointments nowadays. Also, my father does not understand English well, so that's why I'm asking. This is in Massachusetts as well. Thank you in advance for any recommendations.
