Health Insurance ran out the day of surgery Insurance

Health Insurance ran out the day of surgery

    Posted: 01 Jul 2021 02:38 PM PDT

My girlfriend (20) had appendicitis and had surgery today to remove her appendix. We went into the ER yesterday, and they ended up doing the surgery this morning. We just learned that her parents insurance ended today, and she isn't covered anymore because she's expecting to get full time, and waiting on that to get her new insurance. She has follow up appointments for the surgery in a couple weeks.

Is the surgery and hospital stay covered? What does she need to do.

EDIT: This in the US. and her insurance is BCBS

    Homeowners insurance recommendations

    Posted: 02 Jul 2021 04:01 AM PDT

So I purchased my first home last August and I ended up going with Nationwide. It's time to renew and they've increased my policy premium by a couple hundred dollars. When it comes to auto insurance, I always shop around every six months and just switch back and forth between Geico and progressive to get the best deal. Now is time to renew my homeowners insurance and I am looking into other options. I am in the Omaha, Nebraska (USA) area.

Out of all of the big name insurance companies that I have searched through, it seems like State Farm is probably the best in terms of quality and getting payouts. However, it is also about double of what all of the other companies quote me. Farmers seemed to be the cheapest, but also seemed to have the worst reviews. Along with All State, Progressive, Nationwide and Geico, Nationwide seemed like a good in-between when it came to cost/quality. I was wanting to try Lemonade, but they don't have anything in my area currently. Anyone have any other recommendations? I have yet to need to make any claims but are any of these companies really that much better/worse than the others?

    Thanks

Not at fault accident, my insurance or theirs?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2021 07:00 PM PDT

I live in Texas, and was in a not at fault accident, and my car was totaled. My insurance agent said that if I claim with them they can't guarantee my premium won't go up. The at fault's insurance agrees that their client is at fault (they recieved 2 tickets at the scene of the accident, admitted it was their fault on the police report, and there was a witness that backed me up on the police report). My family member and I got hurt, and we hired an attorney.

My afformentioned insurance agent has been the sweetest and is offering $500 more for our car than the at fault's insurance is. Both are factoring in repairs, and things they had accidently left off of the car's evaluation.

I haven't been in any accidents, had tickets, etc in over 6 years, but even so and considering the circumstances of this accident, am I still at risk for having my premiums increase if we claim with my insurance? $500 is big difference since our car wasn't worth too much since it was almost 20 years old and money is tight, but I also worry how high my premium will go if I accept my insurance's offer...

    Thank you for your insights!

CA - can I choose to cover my subcontractors under workers comp?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2021 10:37 PM PDT

    Hi there,

I have a photography business that usually works with production companies who handle payroll and insurance.

However, every now and then, I have small shoots that can't be put through a production company, so I am left to subcontract stylists, technicians, etc. on my own.

I want to be protected in case anyone gets injured on my set, so just to be clear, I WANT to purchase a workers comp policy, as I'd rather be safe than sorry. Especially since CA's classifications of employee vs independent contractors can be a gray area. As a reference, I am estimating I'll be working with 5 contractors over the course of the year and pay out an estimate of 20k for their work combined.

I'm getting mixed information about whether independent contractors can be covered or not. Some forums say independent contractors do not qualify for coverage while an insurance company I spoke to (State Fund) said that anyone you pay, regardless of whether they are an employee or and independent contractor is covered.

I just don't want to purchase coverage and spend money on something if in the end, I can't use it if I need it, because they are not my employees.

I've spoken to State Fund in CA, but would love recommendations for other workers comp insurance companies in CA.

    Thank you.

    Brother Crashed My Car

    Posted: 01 Jul 2021 09:40 PM PDT

My brother was involved in a car accident with my car. He's very forgetful and didn't do much when he got into this accident (taking pictures, writing names, etc.) When it happened, the other car tipped over on its side, and he rushed to go see if anyone was hurt. Luckily no one was, not even a scratch on them. After all was said and done, he got a ticket for a red light. He was basically forced to take blame when it happened in a split second and doesn't remember specifics on who was where. We got a letter in the mail from their Lawyers asking us to admit fault, and suddenly saying one of the passengers had a bodily injury even after exchanging words with them days after. Anyways, my insurance is bare bones minimum, doesn't cover much especially when he's driving it around. I also don't have a lawyer and my brother doesnt even have a job at the moment. What does he do from here? Does he just bite the bullet?

Question about insurance claim settlement / medical bill payment

    Posted: 01 Jul 2021 09:25 PM PDT

So, my wife got rear ended a month ago and luckily the other driver had insurance who have been pretty good to work with. Their insurance paid for car repairs and rental car directly, but cut us a lump sum check to cover medical bills plus personal property, pain and suffering, etc.

The bills we got from the ER did not have any insurance discount applied. My question is, can we give the hospital our insurance info and ask them to re-bill us the discounted amount? Or would that cause issues with our insurance trying to pass the cost on to the other party when we already got a check for the full amount? It's not a huge bill, but I feel like we might as well still be able to use the health insurance benefits we already pay for, and keep any difference between that and the car insurance payment.

There is a special place in hell for liars who cause truck accidents.

    Posted: 01 Jul 2021 09:18 PM PDT

We live in a world that has no compassion and nothing but toxic entitlement. Truck drivers are always in the wrong and it is disgusting. We are not respected and are expected to bend over for everyone. We make peoples comfortable lives even more comfortable. Today we had a lady speed up from behind us while changing lanes expecting to squeeze past our cab while we were already halfway in the lane while transitioning. She chose to hop the curb hoping to make it. Of course no brakes were used by her cause where ever she had to be was more important than us. She couldn't afford to be slowed down. Hit our cab and three other drivers in front of us after losing control. She lied of course and gained everyones sympathy with her crocodile tears. We were found at fault of course. All I have to say is for those of you who lie and don't own up to your mistakes....go to hell. Disgusting...

    Pet Insurance Advice

    Posted: 01 Jul 2021 09:12 PM PDT

I have healthy paws for my 7 year old chihuahua. I've had it for about 5 years now and have been happy with it. Reimbursements were quick and without hassle. The only issue I've had with them lately is the price increase to the monthly payments. Recently they've gone up $20 and the reason they gave is its just the anniversary premium. I think it has to do with the age of my dog even though they say its not. I've seen they've been sued a few times for price gauging and am worried it will continue to go up a crazy amount. I've considered switching to a new company but am unsure which one. So far petsbest looks promising. Has anyone had any experience with petsbest so far? Should I switch plans or stick it out with healthy paws?

My dog so far doesn't have any pre-existing conditions other than his anal glands get clogged every couple of years. He's had a few emergencies when I first got him that quickly racked up medical bills which is what originally got me to get insurance. I know most people don't think pet insurance is worth it but I prefer to have it since my dog is so little and fragile. Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

Do my have to pay my dentist again?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2021 08:19 PM PDT

So I hardly ever go to the dentist and I've never used Dental Insurance until recently. I went for a cleaning and the sheet says Expected Insurance Share: $256. Patient Share $116. Chart Balance : $372. I paid them the $116 because they told me that's all I had to pay. I now received this letter in the mail that says," Our records indicate that your insurance company has paid you directly for services rendered at (Insert Dentist Place). The following amount is due immediately as your patient portion: $145. Please remit payment for the above amount." So I just checked and there was a deposit to my bank of $145. Why is my insurance paying me this and not the dentist? Do I have to pay them in person? $145 + my initial $116 = $261. That is $111 less than the chart balance of $372. Do I have to pay that $111 as well?

I am in California. United States. Santa Clara county

E&S underwriter vs Standard Carrier underwriter

    Posted: 01 Jul 2021 12:16 PM PDT

Has anyone been both at one time or another? How did they compare? I was an indy agent for 6 years before I became an E&S underwriter(sept 2020) I'd dealt with MGAs before but not enough to fully understand them. Theres a lot of similarities between my current position and my prior Indy agency but it still leaves a little to be desired. Is this just how insurance is always going to be for me now? Do I chase a standard carried UW position or go back to being an agent one day? I miss the client interactions but I dont miss getting yelled at for premium increases but I also miss how straight forward standard carriers are. But the E&S premiums (read bonus and salary) and corporate benefits were enough to lure me in.

Thought I knew how auto insurance rates worked until I added a new(er) car to my policy. Help?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2021 07:03 AM PDT

    I have two vehicles:

2016 Honda Pilot (financed)- KBB value is $24k (base model), same make/model/condition/mileage in my area are going for $28k on average. Drive about 5,000 mi/yr.

2019 Subaru Impreza HB AWD (fully owned, premium model)-KBB value is $23k, just bought with cash for $20k. Plan to drive about 3,500 mi/yr.

I have USAA auto insurance because they're usually the best (best CS, best rates, etc., etc.) but holy hell; when I added the Subaru to my policy, my monthly rates went from $125/mo to $584/mo and I truly don't understand why.

The main pressure point cost-wise seems to be collision insurance. The 6-mo rate for my Pilot is $155, but the Subaru's is $540!! That's 3.5 times as much for the same deductible rate ($1k is the max). All other vehicle-specific premiums are relatively comparative between the two cars. And I just can't figure out why collision is so high. I've fiddled with numbers and declining collision on the Subaru and choosing uninsured/property damage ends up increasing the premium on the Pilot, which... also doesn't make sense?

Not to bury the lede, but I also added my newly 16 year old to the policy, but she's not a primary driver of either vehicle. She gets a good student and driver's ed discount and I have multiple discounts for no tickets or accidents, etc. The Pilot is only used when I have to drive the whole household somewhere (need those 3 rows). The Subaru is for pretty much everything else (I work from home, so no commuting). My 16 year old use the Subaru to drive her siblings and herself to/from school and work (all within 3 miles of home). I know this impacts the cost of my insurance; I expected premiums to go up, just not nearly quadruple.

If this is just the way of things, I'll suck it up and pay, but I at least want to understand why I'm paying so freaking much.

Submitting a claim for BCBS Federal

    Posted: 01 Jul 2021 03:05 PM PDT

I have BCBS FEP, and I have some claims (weekly therapy charges) that I've been putting off submitting because as far as I've seen, BCBS makes it pretty difficult to submit claims if your doctor won't do it for you.

My question is: has anyone had experience submitting claims using the FEP, and is there a fax number that I can use? I've called the FEP customer service lines and they tried to connect me to my local state plan line, which is closed, but I have a feeling they might not be super helpful either -- we'll see tomorrow.

All the information I've been able to find is a form that I can print out, attach itemized bills to, and mail into my local plan. It seems kind of absurd that I have to print, mail, wait for the mail to arrive, and then find out whether I even did the forms correctly in 45 days, as I'm not sure that they'll take the receipts I have printed out. Does anyone know if I'm going through the correct process or if there's a much easier way to be doing this? Nobody on the general help lines knows anything about claims.

    State Farm Total Loss Help

    Posted: 01 Jul 2021 06:30 PM PDT

    Hi Y'all,

I need a little help here navigating this situation:

My vehicle was declared a total loss after a tree has fallen on it. The used car market is crazy right now, with prices being super inflated. To make matters worse, my vehicle is difficult to find given it was the model with the more powerful engine.

State Farm gave me their evaluation, and I can't even find a car anywhere close to what they are proposing in the evaluation. I HAVE NOT SETTLED YET! Cars with 50k+ miles and poor condition are selling $3K to $5K more than what they are currently offering me.

To make matters worse, inventory is sparse. I found two listings that were only $2k over, but they sold in a flash.

What are your experiences or advice in trying to become whole? At this rate I'm looking at more money for a way lesser car. Would State Farm be able to use comparable of the same generation car, similar mileage, but a couple years newer; that's all that is out there in inventory right now.

My policy is in Illinois and the loss occurred in Indiana.

    Thanks in advance!

    Insurance coverage

Good Afternoon. I hope everyone is doing well today.

My mom went with GEICO today to ensure her 2011 civic and 2006 mustang gt. I live with my mom in the same household and I use both cars sometimes. If I get into a fender bender with either car is my mom still covered?

Do I need to call GEICO and tell them I live in the same household?

COBRA Due Date vs Deadline Date?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2021 02:33 PM PDT

I am wondering if someone can please give me a definition of these terms. I have searched and found a lot of info on due dates and the 45 day window after coverage ends but nothing on deadline date. I want to understand what that means and the ramifications of that.

The scenario: my son aged out of my employer-sponsored plan. He was having difficult-to-schedule medical tests run right after his coverage ended and so we signed up for COBRA with last month being the first month. He isn't eligible for insurance through his work so we've selected a plan from the exchange but that doesn't start till 8/1.

My question is on due date (showing in the system as 7/1) vs deadline date (showing as 7/31): Does "deadline" mean that I could theoretically pay his July premiums any time by 7/31 if we know he needs to have coverage (for an appointment or an accident)? I was on COBRA between jobs a few years back and did something similar - I didn't pay up front but kept it in my pocket in case it was needed. Might that apply here? Thanks in advance. ETA: We are in Georgia, this is an employer-funded plan if that matters.

    Totaled 1996 F250 Value Question

    Posted: 01 Jul 2021 04:56 PM PDT

    (USA, Mo)

We have a 1996 crew cab F250, 4wd truck with only 94k miles. A tornado came through knocking several of our big trees down and one hit the truck. Repairs are less than $7k, but State Farm is considering it a total loss. It was in great shape before the storm, only a small bit of rust above the wheel well. I can't find something similar within 500 miles that is selling for less than $15k. We just want it fixed. We own it outright, so there are no banks. The mechanic even said he was surprised they totaled it since it was in such good shape and with such low miles. What are our options to contest State Farm's value of the truck?

On COBRA medical, will signing up for just dental/vision with my new employer (waiving their medical) invalidate my old COBRA since dental/vision are technically “Group Health Care Plans”?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2021 06:04 AM PDT

    New Employer-MARYLAND 50+ employees

Old employer - Texas or AZ? International company based in India. 50 + employees

    State of residence- TX

UPDATE: I just got a call back from COBRA saying definitively that enrolling in my new employers vision and dental will not interfere with keeping my old employers COBRA. I have a reference number and had them notate what they told me. That's the closest I can get to having it in writing. So I am going to enroll in those, and waive my new employers medical insurance.

    tps://reddit.com/r/Insurance/comments/o79zb7/i_have_cheap_cobra_and_met_my_out_of_pocket_max/) partially about this aspect

I have called the DOL, Aetna Bswift, my old companies enrollment services, and COBRA about 15 times. My deadline for enrollment is noon Friday, so I only have lunch today to call COBRA.

No one can give me a solid answer. I met my out-of-pocket-max with my COBRA and need (another) surgery next month, so I want to keep it. I know I am allowed to waive my new employers medical and keep my COBRA, but the DOL said the verbiage of the "enrolling in a Group Health Care Plan" cause for ending COBRA was ambiguous and could include dental/vision, although she thought that was unlikely, I have a lot at stake.

I keep getting sent in circles. I'm running out of time. I am about to tell HR I need surgery and beg for more time to figure this out. No one seems to know the answer. Asking COBRA is like asking a magic 8 ball.

I just got advised that if I enroll in dental/vision, that might be viewed as voluntary so it won't be a qualifying life event and I won't get a second shot at taking my current companies health insurance as a backup.

I've all my lunch breaks this week and all the hours these places are open after work on the phone, and I don't have a concrete answer. COBRA is open 8-5, so I have to be laser focused in my call today and get the right answer. I can't afford to get sent in circles again today.

    1) Will enrolling in dental/vision make me ineligible for my old COBRA medical, since they are technically Group Healthcare Plans? Or are they separate? If it matters, my old employer offered dental and vision separately. I waived them at the time but need dental soon.

    2) Who has the authority to answer this definitively? DOL says old company, old company says COBRA, COBRA can't find their own ass.

    3) Would enrolling in dental/vision and losing my COBRA really be considered a voluntary loss of medical and stop me from enrolling in my current companies health insurance as part of a qualifying life event?

    4) someone just said that if I waive medical, I will lose my old employers subsidy for COBRA. I thought COBRA was 100% employee paid? I think this was a miscommunication about ARP which I know I will lose when I waive my employers medical coverage.

I keep getting a "you'll probably be fine but there is a chance you will be totally screwed". I have called everyone multiple times and need help.

Motorcycle Accident Settlement - What’s missing? Should I accept? (CA, not at fault)

    Posted: 01 Jul 2021 04:33 PM PDT

    Hi Folks,

I have three main questions: 1) what is the general process for a settlement? 2) is the offer I received any good? 3) is my lawyer screwing up?

Context: I was riding my motorcycle splitting in CA. A driver changed lanes with no signal and hit me. Soft tissue damage, several months of physical therapy, lots of bone bruising. Medical cost estimates around~7kish(?). Still sore in the spine every now and again. I'm very young so it's not an old age issue.

Insurance paid for all my property damage already (~5k). CHP declared driver at fault, tons of witnesses. I hired a lawyer who will take 33% of agreed upon settlement. We're coming up on the two year mark, so we need to settle (3 months left).

I gave all medical info to the lawyer, and initial offer from Geico was 2.5k. He got my approval to file suit and geico returned with an offer of ~30k. Lawyer says this is very good. I don't feel confident that this is a good offer since I have no idea what negotiations occurred between geico and my lawyer. How can I go about checking that I've been made whole? It's been a very hands off process with my lawyer and I'm not sure if that's OK since this is my first time with a lawyer and an accident

I'm really skeptical about lawyers, and perceive that they are only helping me to further their own self interest.

    Auto Insurance after no-fault accident

    Posted: 01 Jul 2021 10:26 AM PDT

My parked car was hit, driver left a note and I filed a claim with his insurance (Root). They weren't responsive so I filed a claim with my insurance Geico, the day before I was going to drop it off at their repair shop, Root contacted me, their driver admitted fault and is handling everything including rentals and repairs so I canceled/closed my claim with Geico.

My policy is set to end in a month and im shopping around. Most of the auto companies are asking if I was involved in an accident. Since I wasn't at fault and im not claiming anything through Geico but through a third party claim through Root instead, do i say yes or no for that question?

    This is in North Carolina.

Book/ Primer to learn about underwriting?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2021 04:18 PM PDT

I am a maths graduate (uk) interested in a career in underwriting. I was previously deterred by the possibility of automation, but have done some research and learnt re-insurance for example will always need substantial qualitative judgement. I spoke to a friend who works in property reinsurance in a Lloyds syndicate in London, and although they use models, human judgment is central. It is actually this qualitative side that is appealing to me.

However I am finding it very difficult to find a good book/ resource where I can learn more in detail- does anyone have any suggestions?

Also, I know it has been asked before but if anyone has any more thoughts on automation I would love to hear.
