Ex GF car door damaged on my garage door. What insurance would cover this and is it worth filing it or just paying out of pocket for damages?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2021 08:13 AM PDT

This incident happened almost a month ago. Long story short. My then GF lived in my house in Kansas. Our relationship ended so she moved out. In the process of moving out her trunk lid was scratched on my garage door.

To set the scene. It was a Friday and it was pouring down rain a few weeks ago. She had gotten home early from work early, parked in the garage and closed the door. She drives an SUV. Once she was parked in the garage she began packing her car with her stuff. So her trunk lid was open. I got off work around my normal time. Drove home and since it was pouring down rain I had pressed my garage door opener when I turned down my street so I could run straight into the garage in order to get the least amount of soaked.

I ran into the garage. Noticed the garage door only made it up 3/4th of the way. The garage door had caught right around the emblem (middle of the trunk lid) and put about 4 inch scratch in it. I don't believe there's any damage to the garage door. It stil works normal. I immediately told her about the incident. I offered to split the cost of the damage as there's no way I could've known her car was in the garage with the trunk open and there's no way she could've known I was gonna open the garage at that instant.

Well fast forward to yesterday she sends me a repair quote for $1,260 of damage. She is expecting me to pay for all the cost. She said while it was discussed we split the cost it was never agreed on and she doesn't think it's fair for her to pay a penny.

My offer to her to split it still stands if it were paid out of pocket or half a deductible cost as I believe it was an accident on both our parts. My question is if it came down to it. Would her car insurance cover that damage or would my homeowners insurance cover it? And if my homeowners insurance covered it. How do you think it was effect my rates? Or is that even enough damage cost to go through my insurance?

Any info or advice is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

Using personal vehicle for company business

    Posted: 03 Jul 2021 07:45 AM PDT

I work for a contractor in NC. We have a deal worked out where I get paid extra per month for using my vehicle. I travel l to local businesses almost daily to do work at their facilities. We have never discussed auto insurance and I am wondering if this setup is wise. I want to avoid being denied a claim of something were to happen. Based on prior observations it would be reasonable to consider that shortcuts have been taken at my expense. What is a proper coverage solution for this?

Does business travel require commercial insurance?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2021 07:36 AM PDT

My job occasionally has me travel to places like shipyards and other companies. If I use my car does that mean I need commercial insurance?

This would be considered a business trip by my company.

I have the UHSM health plan, have a few questions

    Posted: 03 Jul 2021 11:19 AM PDT

So this is not an insurance plan but I wanted to know if I do need to purchase additional insurance, this a health plan that I pay 173 or so monthly and I want to know if I need additional health insurance apart from this plan.

When people ask for insurance (say when I go for some health checkups) is this UHSM health coverage something that I can show to them? Or do I need something that says "insurance"?

    Thank you.

Car totaled & other driver is M.I.A

    Posted: 02 Jul 2021 05:58 PM PDT

I was struck on my front right by a driver who turned into my vehicle from the left lane. The driver was not the owner of the car so he called his GF to provide me with the insurance info. Turns out the driver doesn't currently have a license as wasn't supposed to be driving. By the time the police came, the driver was gone. The girl's mother lied to the officer and said the girl was the person driving and that i darted pass a stop sign, causing the collision. I told the officer the truth about the girl not being the driver involved with the collision.

They took our statements and left the scene saying that to leave it to insurance to determine who is at fault. My insurance specialist tried to obtain a report and there wasn't one done. My car is totaled and my insurance offered a pay out. The original driver never made a statement(of course not) and their insurance company still has not made a decision as to who is at fault here.

Now my confusion, is it actually legal for them to lie and cover for this guy? Although i am receiving a payout for my car, i was perfectly fine with what i had, and am not too happy having to start a new finance agreement all over again.

Is there anything i can do further here?

    Health insurance spouse survharge

    Posted: 03 Jul 2021 10:52 AM PDT

My husband got a new job and since I've always had insurance under his plans, we assumed we'd do the same. Then the form asked if I was eligible for Insurance through my work and, since I am, they'd charge us $100/month to add me to the plan. Problem is, I work remotely from a different state so my insurance would be completely useless where we live. Is there any regulation that accounts for that? Or is it just cut and dry, we have to pay extra?

Progressive sales tax reimbursement only covering financed amount?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2021 10:30 AM PDT

Hi, this is my first Reddit post! My car was totaled in June and I was told by Progressive I would get a sales tax reimbursement as long as I provided them with proof I bought a replacement car within 30 days. They told me my totaled car was worth about $10k. I just bought a car for over $14k. I knew they would only give me the reimbursement on the cheaper of the two which would come out to about $675. (I'm in Ohio and our sales tax is 6.75%) Well I sent the purchase order to my claims rep and she is saying they will only give me $488. I put $8k down on the new car (The $8k came from the insurance settlement) meaning it was only financed for about $7k. I'm assuming she just calculated 6.75% of that $7k and that is where the $488 came from. Aren't I supposed to get the sales tax on the total price of the vehicle, not just what I financed? The purchase order shows I paid over $900 in taxes since it is calculated before the down payment. It just doesn't seem right that I'm getting less than the sales tax on the totaled car which was worth $4k less than the new car. Thanks in advance for your help!

    Roof System Payment Schedule Questions

    Posted: 03 Jul 2021 09:57 AM PDT

I purchased my first house, 25 year old home around Austin Texas, in 2019. This year we sustained hail damage and the roof needs to be redone. I filed a claim with insurance.

    • The actual cost value of the claim is $11,500
    • The deductible is $3,000
    • The insurance paid me $2,100

After a few long calls, I learned I had a policy with an "optional" Roof Systems Payment Schedule. Because of the age of my roof, the insurance will only payout 25% of the cost to fix the roof after the deductible. it seems like payment schedules are rare so I need someone to confirm a few things:

    • can factors like this be added on to insurance policy without affirmative consent from the customer? I would feel so much better if I had an email confirmation saying I choose this 2 years ago but all they point me to is the book of policy details mailed post closing.

    • this is listed as optional in my policy and renewal but the agent I spoke with now told me it cannot be removed from my policy. Is that legitimate?

    • does it ever make sense to get a policy with a roof payment systems schedule?

    • i made the mistake of calling my car insurance company to get home insurance. What is the best way to find a reputable broker who will educate about different policies across different companies?

Using a new quote for existing policy

    Posted: 03 Jul 2021 09:08 AM PDT

    Hello,

I currently have a liberty mutual policy for Auto/Renter. I recently financed a used vehicle and had my premium spike (as expected). I even more recently got married and went to add my wife and her car to my insurance through my university discount.

When I went in and got a brand new quote through the website, my premiums were significantly less for both cars on the policy. I was going to go through with the purchase, but was rejected at the end and told to call the company. The person I spoke to told me there were probably some issues since I already had an existing policy so I was transferred to a different department to make adjustments to my existing policy.

After making these changes I was told that the premium would be much higher than they already are for the same coverage that was in the quote. I informed her that I had gone through and received a quote for much less which seemed to surprise her.

Is there a way that I can get the coverage that was in the quote applied to my existing policy? Are these quotes only meant for new customers? Is there a better way to go about getting these changes made?

For reference, here are the prices I was looking at:

Before Changes - $250/month for one vehicle

Changing existing policy - $370/month for both vehicles

Online Quote - $135/month for both vehicles

    Edit: In NC

Auto Diminished Value Claim - Washington State

    Posted: 03 Jul 2021 07:15 AM PDT

    Hello Reddit!

I was rear ended at a stop light in my new 2021 Rav4 Hybrid XSE (3,200 miles) about two months ago. The guy who hit me was driving about 40 mph and I rolled into the car stopped in front of me. My car was in the shop for about a month and a half and had $27k worth of repairs (I was surprised they didn't total it). Fortunately and expectedly, the driver who hit me's insurance took full responsibility for the accident including my damages and the guy I rolled into's damages.

I have Esurance and the guy who hit me has Allstate. My claim with Esurance still says "pending" and I haven't been reached out to by either company since my repairs have completed to close the claim (idk if this is a thing or not, I'm assuming it is). Esurance paid for my repairs and rental car directly.

I want to seek a Diminished Value Claim for my car and can't figure out what my next steps should be. Esurance previously said they wouldn't help with it and didn't offer any valuable suggestions.

Any advice to get the process started?

    Thanks!! Kevin

Forced to pay for employer health insurance?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2021 06:27 AM PDT

I got approved for state health insurance and thus no longer need my employer's insurance. I told them I want out of the group insurance because 1) I don't need it, and 2) paying 170 dollars every two weeks for something I quite literally will never use is ridiculous. I notified them of this 2 weeks ago and they haven't said anything since. I asked about it last week and they said they'd "call someone". Since I have asked, they took another medical premium from my pay. I guess my question is, is my employer fucking with me or does this kind of thing just take weeks? It isn't as simple as Not taking my money? This is so incredibly frustrating. I spoke to an agent from my insurance group and they said my employer has to handle it so this is out of my control.

I am in Pennsylvania near Pittsburgh.

    Water damage in bathroom

Flying tire from my car may have hit another driver (Arizona)

    Posted: 02 Jul 2021 07:13 PM PDT

I've never been in an accident and I'm a fairly new driver. While I was turning onto the freeway today, going about 25mph, I ran over a pothole and the spare tire that is stored under my car came loose and onto the road. It may have hit the truck that was behind me, by about 50 feet. I didn't realize that this happened until later, then I returned to where the incident happened and didn't see any signs of an accident occurring.

I haven't been contacted by anyone yet, but what is likely going to happen? Are there any steps that I should be taking right now?

Crosspost from r/legaladvice: I can't remember an accident and my insurance thinks I lied

    Posted: 02 Jul 2021 11:37 PM PDT

I posted this a few hours ago and someone mentioned this might be a good place to find some information.

A few weeks ago in Seattle Washington I recieved a call from a fishy sounding person saying I was in an accident with their client the day before. I ignored the call thinking it was a scam. The next day MY insurance provider contacted me asking about the accident that occurred. To this day I still can't recall anything happening.

So I told them I wasn't aware of any accident. I went and looked at my car and I couldn't find any evidence of a crash. My car has a bra on the front and nothing looked wrong where they said the collision happened. So I took a bunch of photos and sent it to them. At the time I believed someone was trying to insurance scam me.

A week later I received a call from a special investigator saying they have front and rear dash cam video of me bumping the car with audio that had a loud "thud". I still haven't seen the video but they played the audio over the phone and it did sound significant.

They asked for an official statement and I told them the truth. I still didn't remember bumping anyone.

I got another call a few days ago with another special investigator telling me that I misrepresented the facts and am probably going to be dropped as a customer.

I am a disabled vet and do have quite a few medical issues which include ptsd, migraines, and a more recent thyroid problem. But so far nothing that explains a giant hole in my memory.

Since this incident I looked more closely at my car and there are a few small streeks on the front left of the car bumper which have a bra on it.

It scared me enough to search symptoms and I have scheduled a doctor's appointment to discuss a diabetes test because that seems like the most possible explanation as to why I have been feeling the way I have been. I am currently terrified for my health and my legal standing.

My question is what can I do to appeal to them? What kind of legal and financial consequences am I looking at?

Renters Claim Affects Home Insurance Premiums? California

    Posted: 02 Jul 2021 01:00 PM PDT

Question for you all, if you don't mind. I have a renters insurance policy and my two bikes were stolen overnight. The renters policy does cover it, but I'm concerned that filing a claim will affect my future home owners insurance premiums. Does anyone know if claims history on renters generally affects future homeowners premiums?

Also if I started to make a renters claim and then decided not to follow through, would that still affect future homeowners premiums?

I applied for a work at home “Claim Benefit Specialist” position and got an interview. I’m confused on what exactly I would be doing. Does it involve dealing with the public? The description said no such thing.

    Posted: 02 Jul 2021 09:30 PM PDT

Okay so I applied for a CVS/Aetna claim benefit specialist position as the title says, and I guess they really liked my application because they immediately scheduled an interview. All I know is it deals with health insurance, which I know nothing about, but I'm assuming they'll just teach me everything.

I fit all the requirements and qualifications (previous job dealing with various computer applications, detail oriented, High School Diploma) but I'm just confused... What does someone with this role actually do? Is it a customer service job? The job listing said absolutely nothing about good communication skills or interpersonal skills, which I was super relieved about because I have very severe social anxiety and baaad social skills. That's why a work at home appealed to me, so I thought "this is gonna be perfect".

But every time I try to research "claims specialist" to learn about what they do, the term "claims adjuster" comes up instead...and it seems like they deal with the public daily, from the sounds of it. Are they the same exact thing??? I hope not, because I was relieved that the job listing didn't require good people skills, which I have none of.

I don't mind if I do have to come to terms with that being part of the job, because I want to get better at my people skill, I'm just afraid I'd suck at it and get fired immediately for "tricking" them into thinking I'm qualified by applying...I just want to know what to expect...the job said nothing about people skills (aside from working with your team, but that's kind of a given)...I'm honestly just hoping for a quiet, low stress job, that's easy to learn how to do with no experience. Everything else about the job sounds perrrfect, I just want to make sure I'm not way in over my head.

Edit: I live in Pennsylvania, USA

    Very low car repair estimate

    Posted: 02 Jul 2021 12:24 PM PDT

I want to see what you think about this issue. I am in Texas and was involved in an accident. The driver of the at-fault car side-swiped my car. The police came and found them at-fault. I have the police report and called their insurance. They seem cooperative but don't have a good reputation. It's one of those insurers that advertises on TV a lot.

I got a quote on my own from a body shop for around $6,000 to repair. The insurance company had me go to their body shop and the estimate was very low, around $1500.

I am concerned that they are not fixing important issues like door hinges and I will have lingering issues. The other quote seemed much more thorough and this one seems like a minimal effort. How can I push back on the low estimate?

    Thanks for any help.

Rear ended then hit car in front of me

    Posted: 02 Jul 2021 04:04 PM PDT

Yesterday morning on the way to work, I was coming to a stop because the car in front of me was always coming to a stop, before i was able to come to a complete stop another car rear ended me and pushed into the vehicle in front of me. Seems pretty obvious to me that the car behind me is at fault for the whole accident right? If the car behind me wouldn't have rear ended me then I wouldn't have been pushed into the vehicle in front of me.

Now when I was talking to the guys insurance they told me they may be able to pay me out for only half of my cars value because depending on the insurance he has, the money may have to be split between me and the guy in front of me. Sounds like absolute baloney to me.

If this is what they end up trying to do, should I threaten them with a lawyer or what? I mean how is it legal that my car being worth $6,500 according to kbb and they are saying they're going to give me half of that for something that I'm not at fault for.

Oh and I only carry liability insurance on my vehicle.

Rental Car was broken into in Puerto Rico, what are my options?

    Posted: 02 Jul 2021 01:07 PM PDT

Sorry if this isn't the correct subreddit, but i wanted to ask this somewhere while i wait in the police station.

I'm currently traveling on vacation in Puerto Rico and while we were visiting a waterfall our rental car was broken into and my GF's purse/phone/wallet was stolen and 2 windows broken.

We got the car from Enterprise and booked through Costco Travel and used an Chase Preferred credit card. My regular car insurance is through AAA and is only liability insurance. We did not purchase any extra insurance on the rental car.

Is there any sort of insurance we could use from Costco/Chase/or Enterprise to pay for or help pay damages? Or are we out of luck?

    Home owners insurance costs

    Own-Occupation Disability Application Process

    Posted: 02 Jul 2021 08:37 AM PDT

How accurate do you need to get on your application for Own-Occupation Disability insurance? Their medical history website was a broken mess and wouldn't let me input any of my prescriptions, wouldn't recognize most of my doctor's, and wanted specific appointment dates from decades ago when I was in elementary school.

I mean, I filled it out to the best of my ability, but if I'm off by a year or two on the dates for an appointment I had decades ago, is it going to fuck me over? Or if I forgot a prescription I used to take, or a checkup I had with a doctor a few years ago? The application seemed to want my entire medical history and every doctors appointment I ever had within the last ten years.

My question is, is this out of the ordinary? Everyone seems to have a degree and I don't. Am I unqualified? Should I try to finish my degree? Should I be worried I could lose my job? I'm very dedicated, but it's scary stepping into a role, that I do not know much about, and seem under qualified.

United Healthcare Life Insurance made a shitty mistake

    Posted: 02 Jul 2021 05:56 PM PDT

I'm very new to insurance and I'm just seeking some general answers. On June 16th 2021 my older brother committed suicide. He had a life insurance plan through his work that he had just started at only about three months ago. When I contacted the life insurance company with my mom and got them the documentation they needed they reached back out to us like three days later stating my father was a beneficiary and they had set up an account for him with $25000 in it and even express mailed him a book of checks to take money out of it. It felt fishy because I knew with suicide there's a two year period you have to be insured for it to cover that, however I feel like they should have covered that base once they saw the death cert. Today in the mail we got a letter stating they are withdrawing the funds due to the nature of his death and the length of time he was insured with them. Is there anything my family can do or did we just just get completely shit on during one of the worst things we've had to experience?

    EDIT: We live in Pennsylvania
