Posted: 02 Jul 2021 08:23 PM PDT I started a baking business out of my apartment back in February and got a huge response after posting photos of my work on Instagram. Complete strangers started reaching out to me to place orders, so I decided to join a commissary kitchen to keep up with the demand since my apartment is too small and, technically, it's against my lease to run a business out of the apartment. For the first 2-3 months I was so busy that I had to (nicely) turn down orders. Now, I'm starting to feel like I made a huge mistake because orders have all but dried up. I've already spent tons of money joining the commissary, setting up a website, getting business insurance and all the required licensing, getting business cards and other marketing materials, so I don't want to quit just yet. I also lost my job to the pandemic, so it's not like I have anything else to fall back on. I've been networking with other local small businesses, I've signed up for pop-ups and other local events, I've brought samples to businesses in my area, I've had local influencers share my work on their IGs and I've received incredibly positive feedback from everyone. However, none of these efforts seem to be translating into new business. My savings account is starting to look grim and I'm terrified of how precarious my financial situation is about to become. I think my prices are what's holding me back, but I'm still less pricey than similar businesses in my state/city and I just can't afford to lower my prices. I make everything from scratch and every little detail on my cakes is hand-piped which, unfortunately, means I'm losing money because everything I make from an order goes straight to paying for the hours I spent at the commissary working on the order. I guess I'm just looking for some advice on what else I could be doing to attract new business and what I can do to stay positive during this (hopefully temporary) hump. I deeply believe in my product, my skills, and the quality of my work, but man this stress is starting to take a toll on me. Edit: thank you all SO much for the incredible feedback and words of wisdom!! I was feeling really down all day and on the verge of tears when I made this post, but all of your responses have uplifted my spirits. So much so that I can't wait to start trying a lot of your suggestions, particularly adding more everyday items to the menu! Seriously, thank you all for your responses! [link] [comments] |
Biggest expense on my product is my labels. Is it worth it to go cheaper? Posted: 02 Jul 2021 07:20 PM PDT My biggest expense on my product is by far my labels. I did the math and I net approximately 98 cents per product with the nice looking labels I have now. If I print the labels myself the quality goes down ( as for some reason they do not sell blanks of the high quality labels) however I'd net $2.48 per product if I did so. Has anyone had any experience with cheaper labels and if people really care or not? [link] [comments] |
How should I bill for my SALT audit representation services? Posted: 03 Jul 2021 04:54 AM PDT My concerns: • Chasing down receivables • Requiring 100% of my consulting fee upfront might dissuade too many clients • A lengthy audit and appeal can easily push invoicing to months or years What I'm considering: Giving the client the option to choose between: • Asking for 50% upfront and the remainder at the end of the engagement but representation through the appeals process will not be included, or • 100% upfront and representation through the appeals process will be included free of charge What do you think of the options I'm considering? Should I consider a different option? [link] [comments] |

Best way to pay for business purchase on personal credit? Posted: 02 Jul 2021 04:37 PM PDT Hello! I am a small developer, and I have an LLC and just financed an iPad to further my development career on my personal Apple Card. What is the best way (in terms of paying the least taxes overall) to pay for the iPad? Do I pay myself and then pay it off personally? Do I withdraw funds directly from my business bank account and then write off the purchase? TIA! [link] [comments] |

Don’t laugh. I need basic rules of thumb Posted: 02 Jul 2021 01:06 PM PDT This has been bugging me for years. We all see businesses around us and it seems like they all get run in their own way. You would think that after centuries of experimentation we would have rules or formulas to determine whether to quit /keep going/grow. I see restaurant owners that work for free and have their families working to save money. They use personal money to buy supplies for business etc… just a mess. So here's where I need help. If a business needs to grow it probably will need to borrow money. How the heck do you decide how much to pay yourself? After that, how much do you reinvest? Or do you take as much as possible after paying your loan minimum? Do you try to pay off your business loans ASAP or do you try to pay them in installments every month with interest since it's just the business money… TLDR: How do you decide how much to give yourself vs get your business out of debt. Seems like some businesses have no problem with perpetual debt [link] [comments] |

Getting an EIN and Business Credit Card without deciding on a Trade Name/DBA yet Posted: 02 Jul 2021 02:16 PM PDT I formed a single-member LLC and I want to get an EIN, bank account, and business credit card for the company. I will use a Trade Name/DBA but haven't settled on one yet. When I fill out the form for an EIN it asks for the Trade Name, and I don't see a way to update the info after the fact. Do I need to decide and create the Trade Name first? Does the IRS even need to have it? Same questions when it comes to a bank account and business credit card... Should I wait until I have registered the Trade Name? Thanks in advance for any experience you can share! [link] [comments] |
Worry about copyright, trademarks, patents... Posted: 02 Jul 2021 03:32 PM PDT So a long time ago I 3d printed a speed loader for my firearm. I posted it on Facebook and someone wanted to buy one off me. I didn't sell any. I made another design. The idea has been idle for years. Recently I thought about trying to 3d print stuff for money. I started trying to figure things out like if I needed DBA LLC. I knew a while ago that someone else had made some speed loaders and 3d printed them. I've noticed they kinda similar. They all do the same thing really. They did not copy me. But that has me wondering if they will copyright me or something for my loader looking too similar. I've been hearing if it's a functional part, they can't copyright it. This company says there is a patent pending but I can't seem to find any patents. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong place. It's kind of an old company. Half their speed loaders are just about copies of the speed loaders that come with some of the firearms. Which has me wondering if that's why they can't get a patent. But yeah, I want to 3d print stuff and sell it but worry it looks too similar and getting into trouble. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Jul 2021 09:05 PM PDT I'm looking at starting an affiliate program for our ecommerce business, in the past we'd just send out free samples but I feel like this incentivizes people a bit more and gives back to them for helping us out. We can't decide on what percent is appropriate to give them though. My spouse says 5%, but I feel like that's low and 10% would be more competitive or on par with what others will offer. I was wondering, what's the standard here for ecommerce affiliates? Like what does Amazon or more fairly other small businesses typically offer? The other thing I was wondering is should I give them a coupon code? That takes a chunk out of our profits when you stack it on top of their commission, but our margins do allow for us to still make money off a 15-20% discount. I thought either a 5% commission and a 10% discount code or flip the numbers. [link] [comments] |

Help a Shopify Beginner improve (constructive criticism wanted!) Posted: 02 Jul 2021 02:00 PM PDT Hi All, I'm very new to shopify (as you will soon find out) and I have made my first ever online store for watch straps which I am selling - this is not a dropshipping store. My store is extremely basic - but I'd like to know what else you would add to give it a more professional vibe and increase the amount of conversions. It's still early days but I have had around 300 store sessions (mainly from search and social media) with 0 conversions although I'm not currently trying to sell, just begin getting some traction. I'm all ears and I'm happy to take on criticism if it will improve my site. I also have been thinking about adding a Review and Testimonial page for my home menu where I showcase client reviews - it's just tough atm as I only have reviews from Ebay and etsy and no actual Shopify transactions. I appreciate anyone who takes the time to view and help me improve my site and I will answer any questions in the replies below. The store is www.barrastraps.com Thanks all! Posted: 02 Jul 2021 10:56 AM PDT Hello all! My father is a small business owner and he is having an issue with accounts receivables. He has recently (in last 5 years) taken on some large accounts (in the 6 even 7 figures) that have net 60-120 days as part of the contract terms. The problem is, he employs subcontractors to do the work, and he pays them biweekly (35-50%). This wasn't an issue previously since net 30 is his standard. We can't ask the new accounts to change their practices, as clearly he doesn't want to risk losing them. Any suggestions on how to resolve this? [link] [comments] |
Marketing and growing your small business with social media Posted: 02 Jul 2021 06:24 PM PDT Hello! My friend has just recently started his own business. And he's asked me to come on and help him with the marketing and getting clients. As such he'll pay me a fee for every sale I bring his way. What's a good way of using social media to my advantage or any other great ways of marketing and helping get the business name out there. [link] [comments] |
Rejected bid, keep trying or move on? Posted: 02 Jul 2021 10:19 AM PDT I gave a bid this morning to a company with real pain, that my company can fix for them.... but the price I gave them was 2.5x higher than their current rate and they said no. Should I be trying to convince them that they can't get better service for less money, or find a better customer? [link] [comments] |
Question: How much could I charge small business owners for open source software implementation. Posted: 02 Jul 2021 03:28 PM PDT Like the title says, I work in IT in a small country in Central America, I currently am very interested in working in small projects besides my job, i have a business question, i can manipulate and configure open source project like openemr for small clinics or independent doctors, but how much should i charge for implementing an opensource project in a small business, or how could I have a business model around it, I'd like to point out that I'm not interested in working for said business, just install it, configure it, provide some support and go. Sorry for my English it is not my main language. Is it wrong to charge someone for installing an opensource software? Currently wondering about how to make some money with my current skill handling those programs You can write prices in dollars, and I'll adequate it to my country currency and financial situacion. Would you pay for this service as a homeowner/business owner and how much? Posted: 02 Jul 2021 09:09 AM PDT Little context. My husband is a police officer and does pretty much pointless house checks for the beach town he's currently placed in when he has free time as people can call and request them. So there are tons of million dollar homes that he checks. Just walks about the perimeter and their backyards. He says he sees so many possibilities for security breaches and that these people just assume they're safe because of the area but with his job he knows that's just not true and they're actually a target for this reason. There's a serious lacking or security in these areas. He was in infantry in the Marines and has been a police officer for about 4 years and we are thinking of starting a security consulting business on his days off where he goes in homes and business, explains where the breaches could occur and how, how to fix them, walk them through the process of fixing them, giving recommendations and referrals. Also considering adding firearm training for home and business defense as well as training on what to do if you're home and someone breaks in, etc. Would you pay for this service and if so how much? Doesnt have to be a flat fee but kinda a range (assuming you were willing to dedicate the funds) Edit to add: the payment scale would ultimately be based on square footage, every 2000sqft or so Thanks!
